Sega has announced Caesar in Gaul, the first campaign expansion for Total War Rome 2.
Set for release on December 12 for £9.99/€14.99/$14.99, the expansion will let players choose from four playable factions (Gallic Arverni, Germanic Suebi, Belgic Nervii and Rome) in a conflict inspired by Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic War.
Total War series creative director Mike Simpson said: "We've always planned to focus more closely on some of the key conflicts of the ancient world, and Caesar's war in Gaul is the ideal place to start.
"We've also improved the game considerably since launch, and that process continues as we move onto substantial feature and gameplay improvements."[h=3]Caesar in Gaul features[/h] - New campaign map: The expanded map of Gaul and southern Britannia brings 18 provinces to conquer, fully detailed with resources, settlements, capitals, and new environmental effects.
- Greater focus on characters: Play through the campaign with faction-leading avatars such as Caesar and Vercingetorix.
- 24 turns per year & seasons: A shorter campaign timespan (58-51BC) means each in-game year is split into more turns. As the calendar changes, so do the seasons, bringing seasonal gameplay effects and stunning visual alterations.
- New mid-game challenge mechanics: Caesar in Gaul replaces ROME II's civil war with different, conflict-appropriate mechanics. As barbarian players progress, they'll begin to feel the mailed fist of Rome as heavy intervention forces are sent to Gaul. Likewise, Roman players will see the tribes rebelling and forming alliances.
- Compact, focussed multiplayer campaign: With a tighter geographic scope and faction-roster, 2-player campaigns are more focussed and less time-consuming than the full ROME II campaign.
- New historical battle: Surrounded and outnumbered, take on the role of Caesar as he fights the last desperate, decisive engagement of the Gallic War: the battle of Alesia.
- New Total War: ROME II playable factions: Alongside the factions playable in Caesar in Gaul, several playable factions are also unlocked in the full ROME II campaign: the Nervii, the Boii and the Galatians.
- New units: A raft of new battlefield units is unlocked for the Boii, the Galatians, the Nervii and the Gallic tribes, plus new auxiliary and mercenary units.
Total War Rome 2 sales hit 800,000 copies in the game's first month of availability, Sega said in November.

Browser toolbars are now being used to hijack computers’ performance in order to mine Bitcoins, Malwarebytes has warned.
The security firm said that ‘Potentially Unwanted Programs’, or PUPs, are usually “unnecessary junk for your desktop that usually involves monitoring your surfing/shopping habits”.
However, some of the programs have been found to be used for a secondary purpose – harnessing PCs’ power to mine for Bitcoins.
One program was even found to have the mining capability written into its EULA, and was taking up over 50 per cent of a user’s system resources.
When the user tried to delete the ‘jh1d.exe’ file, it reappeared.
The file was found by the Malwarebytes team to be the popular jhProtominer Bitcoin miner, which was being resurrected after each deletion by a secondary program – ‘monitor.exe’ – made by Mutual Public, a firm also known as We Build Toolbars.
In the EULA for monitor.exe, the EULA included a passage stating: “as part of downloading a Mutual Public, your computer may do mathematical calculations for our affiliated networks to confirm transactions and increase security. Any rewards or fees collected by WBT or our affiliates are the sole property of WBT and our affiliates.”
Adam Kujawa, who wrote the blog post on the Bitcoin-mining PUPs for Malwarebytes, commented: “PUPs have gone to a new low with the inclusion of this type of scheme.”
Kujawa added that while Bitcoin miners are not bad by nature, their use on the computers of unwilling participants was wrong.
“They already collected information on your browsing and purchasing habits with search toolbars and redirectors,” he said of the PUPs.
“They assault users with pop-up ads and unnecessary software to make a buck from their affiliates. Now they are just putting the nails in the coffin by stealing resources and driving user systems to the grave.”

Freshly announced PC/mobile Warhammer 40,000 game Storm of Vengeance will be exclusive to download platform Steam on PC, and will not be available in boxed form.
An official statement describes the title - due for release in Q1 2014 - as a "lane strategy game", which may mean it will be yet another MOBA title like League of Legends or perhaps a real-time strategy game with an online multiplayer mode.
A spokesperson told PCR: "The PC version will be Steam only, so no boxed version. It will have multiplayer functionality."
Storm of Vengeance will be developed by Eutechnyx and will be based on the popular Warhammer 40,000 Games Workshop fantasy franchise. Eutechnyx entered into a relationship with the tabletop gaming company earlier this year.
It tells the story of "a pivotal moment in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, during the legendary planetary conflict on Piscina IV". The game will star Grand Master Belial and Ork Warlord Ghazghkull Thraka, and will give players the chance to defend the planet with 100 Dark Angel Space Marines, or attempt to destroy it with the Ork Waaagh! and their telly-porta technology.
"Storm of Vengeance sees Eutechnyx working with one of the most established brands in gaming," said Eutechnyx CEO Darren Jobling.
"I am very excited that our new partnership with Games Workshop will allow us to bring the world of Warhammer 40,000 to dedicated fans around the world via our new mobile division."
Jon Gillard, Head of Licensing for Games Workshop, added: "Eutechnyx are an extremely professional established developer with a proven track record of successful licensed products.
"The game they’re creating based on this iconic conflict from the Warhammer 40,000 mythos is another great example of talented developers applying their passion for the IP in a compelling and imaginative game design."

There's nothing like a Steam sale to remind us how not-dead or un-unwell PC gaming is. Just as it did this time last year, Steam's holiday sale helped the Windows, Mac, and Linux client reach a new milestone: more than 7 million users logged in at the same time.
Last year's milestone was 6 million, and our often unerring grasp of rudimentary math tells us that's a rise of 1 million across the year. Bear in mind that's concurrent users; the total number of registered Steam accountssurpassed 65 million at the end of October.
Speaking of Steam sales, there's still time to pick up the weekend's new deals, with for the likes of Torchlight 2, Fez, The Wolf Among Us, Metro: Last Light, The Witcher 2, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs,Shadowrun Returns, and pa-lenty more.

IT distributors are urging resellers and retailers to redouble efforts to drive Microsoft upgrades.
With support and security updates for Windows XP and Office 2003 ending on April 8th, customers still using the operating system and software suite need to start thinking about their options. “This is a major opportunity for resellers and one that could trigger a surge of upgrade business,” said Gemma Horsell, Microsoft business manager at Tech Data UK.
“Most organisations have become much more mobile since they installed XP and Office 2003, and many will now also have tablet devices in use as well as laptops. Depending on their needs, they may want to consider moving to a mix of Windows 7 and Windows 8, and making use of Office 365 as well as Office 2013.”
Ellie Farley, Microsoft product specialist at Entatech, added: “If end users are currently running XP, there is a high chance they will also have a legacy estate of servers, software and PCs, providing a fantastic opportunity for resellers to make a sale whilst keeping their customers up-to-date.
“Should customers choose to not upgrade to a newer operating system, they could potentially incur future costs to maintain their estate, whilst also becoming vulnerable to Malware and spyware attacks, with security risks and viruses also increased.”
Marc Lucas from the Microsoft OEM team revealed at a recent EntaLive event that 31 per cent of computers still use Windows XP as of October (according to NetMarketShare), and likened the danger of using the operating system after April 8th to “driving a car with a faulty airbag that you can’t get spare parts for”.
A Microsoft spokesperson told PCR: “While Windows XP was a great operating system for its time and introduced some great anti-malware and security features, it’s no longer enough to defend against the onslaught of modern threats that organisations face.
“With every new version of Windows we have made substantial security updates from the previous versions and both consumers and organisations can get advice on how to upgrade to a more recent operating system at www.get2modern.com”

In the PC version of Battlefield 4, there's a bug where damage from a single bullet is applied multiple times – essentially a "one-hit kill" glitch. DICE is aware of the issue and hopes to resolve it in an upcoming patch planned for the week of December 2.
The patch will also fix an issue with audio randomly dropping during multiplayer matches and a consistent crash bug that occurs when exiting out to the main menu while within the single-player campaign. Finally, the patch will adjust the network and computer performance screen: players can test their network connection and computer performance on this screen and receive recommendations from the game on how to improve each.
The PS4 version of Battlefield 4 was updated earlier this week. We found the new version to be a much smoother experience, allowing us to freely play both Conquest and Rush modes without any crashes or network disconnects. The server browser, however, still seems to be an issue on the platform.

Nvidia insists players shouldn’t limit their decision between the PS4 and Xbox One when choosing their next gaming device.
The firm has launched its range of small form-factor PCs alongside Sony and Microsoft’s new machines. And Nvidia says players looking for the best games experience should opt for the PC instead.
“We are proposing small form-factor PCs to be a viable alternative to the next-gen consoles. Enthusiast players want the ultimate games system and that is the PC,” said Matt Wright, consumer sales manager at Nvidia.
“The PC platform is far superior to any console when it comes to gaming, plus you get all the extra functionality that a computer brings.”
Wright told MCV that Nvidia recognises the hesitance from players towards the ‘complex’ PC market. But he insists the manufacturer is working to break down the barriers between console and PC gaming.
“We want to make PC gaming as simple as possible and we think that it already becoming much more relevant and appealing to casual gamers,” said Wright.
And the GPU maker isn’t wrong. The latest digital data from UKIE found the PC to be the UK’s fastest growing platform.
He added: “Steam now has more users than Xbox Live. There is a whole new generation who grew up playing on PC with titles like Minecraft orWorld of Tanks. There’s a huge community who love playing their games on PC.”

The already long-in-development World of Warcraft film has been delayed.
"Release date for WARCRAFT from @Legendary Pictures released by@UniversalPics is moving from December 18, 2015, to March 11, 2016," reads atweet from the official World of Warcraft Twitter account. No reason is given for the change, and on contacting representatives from World of Warcraft creator Blizzard Entertainment, we were told to ask the film's producers at Legendary. They, of course, were off celebrating the holidays.
This latest delay will prolong the film's production cycle yet again, though that should come as little surprise to any who have been following the project. It's been at least seven years since the film adaptation was revealed to the public and nearly five years since a director was attached to the movie. Whether this glacial production pace negatively impacts the final film remains to be seen - assuming any of us are still alive when the movie finally debuts.

Crucial has said its next generation memory will not be released this year.
The memory maker originally said that its new DDR4 DRAM modules would arrive in late 2013, but in an official statement sent to PCR, Crucial said: “Earlier this year, Crucial announced future availability of our new DDR4 DRAM modules which will enable the next-generation of consumer and enterprise computing products.
“We are currently busy sampling DDR4 modules in support of our industry partner’s development and continue to work diligently with them to make sure that Crucial delivers not only world-class compatibility but world-class quality. We expect to make our DDR4 DRAM modules commercially available in the spring of 2014.”
Some of the main benefits of DDR4 compared to its predecessor include the fact that it will be twice as fast – offering speeds of 2.1 GHz and above, and it will be more energy efficient – using up to a fifth less power than DDR3..

It seems there are as many Warhammer 40k video games as there are worlds huddled within the Imperium of Man. Here's the latest: Warhammer 40k: Space Wolf. The ferocious Space Wolves, as every Warhammer 40k fan knows, is a chapter of the Space Marines famous for their grey armour and wolf skin accessories. Not exactly politically correct, but when it's cold, it's cold. They're not the most famous of Space Marine chapters - video games have favoured the Blood Ravens and the Ultramarines - but now, the Space Wolves get their time in the spotlight. For Fenris!Warhammer 40k: Space Wolf is a fusion of turn-based tactical combat and collectable cards, and will be free-to-play, developer HeroCraft announced today. It's due out in the second quarter of 2014 for iOS, Android, PC and "other platforms".The video, below, gives us a glimpse of the gameplay. It shows off the Wolf Scout, who uses a sniper rifle, the Grey Hunter, who uses a bolter, and the Wolf Guard, who carries a hammer and shield. It looks like equipment, such as flamers and jump packs, come in the form of cards and can be upgraded.

A first-person Command & Conquer game: it sounded like a good idea at the turn of the millennium, but the tripe that EA and Westwood turned out - Command & Conquer: Renegade - was, well, tripe.Thank goodness for a group of fans determined to do better - much better, by the looks of things. In 2007 they embarked on a project called Renegade, an Unreal Tournament 3 mod that would be everything C&C: Renegade wasn't. Six years later it's almost done: Renegade X will be released 26th February 2014.
This is an admirably free and non-profit pursuit, the game created in the team's - Totemarts' - spare time.Gameplay itself is first- and third-person, and both teams - Nod and GDI - will have bases to look after, as they do in the C&C strategy games. You'll be able to manage your own economies, choosing from more than 30 weapons, 15 vehicles and massive attacks such as nuclear strikes, ion cannons, air strikes and more.If structures are destroyed, various upgrades will be lost to you. In other words, there's a layer of tactics and strategy on top of the blam blam blam, which also looks entertaining. There's all sorts of vehicular combat mixed in as well.Betas for Renegade have been released before, as has the single-player campaign, Black Dawn, in 2012.The multiplayer in Renegade X will apparently be in beta shape when the game launches. "That means that although all core features will be in the game, it will not be the finished product," Totemarts explained. "We plan on releasing patches, new maps, and new features throughout 2014."Great stuff!

Dixons has said that it will sell a million tablets in the run-up to Christmas, partly fuelled by a last-minute spending spree of nearly £1 billion by Brits.
Speaking to Retail Week, supply chain director for Dixons Retail Tim Allinson said: “We have got the stock, we’ve got the staff, we’ve got the equipment, we’ve got the trucks so bring on the sales.”
Allinson added that the retailer expects to receive over 5,000 orders for next-day delivery on Boxing Day.
The orders will contribute to a predicted spend of £819 million on last-minute gifts by Brits.
Research released by Dixons’ Currys and PC World retailers cites panic sparked by insecurity over gift selection as the biggest cause for the spend, with over a third (35 per cent) of people buying more gifts after being disappointed with how the original present looks wrapped up.
Another quarter (23 per cent) will suffer the typical fear that the recipient has spent more on their present.
In terms of identifying the correct gift, more than a third (35 per cent) of Brits stated that they wished their loved ones would simply stick to a specified list of gifts, rather than using their own initiative.
Almost the same amount (3- per cent) take the approach, and directly tell people what they would like and where to buy it from.
