Valve’s trio of recent announcements – first details of Steam OS, its hardware beta and controller – has added an extra sense of the unknown to the future of videogame hardware. Though the face off between PS4 and Xbox One continues to attract the greater number of headlines, Valve is deliberately and defiantly steering clear of that particular race; it has become a platform holder, like Sony and Microsoft, but a most unconventional one.Steam’s all-encompassing presence in the PC games market has spurred a renaissance that few would have foreseen years ago, when consoles were the dominant force and the death of the PC was forecast by so many. In fact, we’re seeing a complete reversal of that trend, says one research specialist.“In the battle being fought between consoles and PCs at the moment, the PC is winning,” Kantar Worldpanel analyst Jules Williams tells us. “Console game shoppers switched £3 million of their spending to the PC this year, which has meant that declines in computer game sales have been far less severe than other platforms.“Shoppers have switched to PCs because at the moment the PC offers better graphics and a wider range of games at lower prices than its rivals. The only downside for PC gamers is that often playing on their computer involves leaving the comfort of the living room.”

Acer officially announced its new Chromebook, C720. The C720 is 30% thinner (at 0.75 inches thick) and lighter (at 2.76 pounds) than Acer's previous Chromebook, C7. The C720 Chromebook has an 11.6-inch anti-glare widescreen, with a 1,366-by-768 resolution. Acer claims seven second boot times and up to 8.5 hours of battery life. The C720 comes with 4GB of DDR3L memory and uses an Intel Celeron 2955U processor based on Haswell technology. The system also has 16GB of local SSD storage along with 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi to get to Google's cloud-based storage. Like previous Chromebooks, the C720 Chromebook is constantly updated with the latest version of the Chrome OS and built around the Chrome browser."One thing this machine lacks is the most intriguing feature of the new ARM-based (and lower-power) Chromebook 11 from HP:charging via Micro-USB.

The game has only been officially confirmed for Xbox 360 and Xbox One, with Microsoft having made no prior mention of a PC version.
But a rating for LocoCycle on PC has been discovered on USK listings, suggesting a likely PC port on or closely following the game's console debut in November.
LocoCycle stars a three-wheeled motorbike called I.R.I.S who is out to escape her maker, and S.P.I.K.E, the bike whose mission is to catch her. Check out some early gameplay videos here.
Twisted Pixel is the studio behind popular XBLA titles including Splosion Man and its sequel Ms. Splosion Man, and The Gunstringer.

Do you like Battlefield so much that you bleed blue and orange? You'll like Maingear's new Battlefield 4-branded Shift (pictured at left) and F131 (right) gaming PCs, then. Both special editions will ship with BF4-themed case artwork, desktop wallpaper and codes to download the game itself. They'll also have performance that does justice to EA's military shooter, as Maingear is equipping the two desktops with AMD's just-launched Radeon R9 290X video cards. Pre-orders for the BF4 systems start today; the F131 will set you back $2,199 with one R9 290X inside, while the Shift carries two cards and a heftier $3,789 base price.

Microsoft said it would pay up to a $100,000 bounty to researchers who found exploits in Windows 8.1, and it's putting its money where its mouth is. The company just paid the full hundred grand to Context Information Security's James Forshaw for discovering a defense circumvention technique. While Microsoft wants a fix before it details the attack, it says that Forshaw deserved the full amount for being thorough -- he's describing a whole class of security threat, not just one flaw. Us end users may never fully appreciate the finding, but it's good to know that the new OS will be that much safer.

Everyone and their dog seems to think that GTA V is heading to PC, but theories as to why it’s not yet happened are pretty varied.
Perhaps the most colourful has come from Intel notebook marketing director Chris Silva who made the following forum-worthy claim to PC Gamer.
“Somebody paid a lot of money to make sure that title was exclusive,” he believes.
By ‘exclusive’ he means exclusive to consoles. That being consoles from two market rivals. So did they team up and both chip in for this secretive payoff? Or did one party pay to convince Rockstar to keep GTA V away from next-gen? Or is this just nonsense?
Silva also reckons that it won’t be long before the game does make the jump to the PC platform.
“At least with Grand Theft Auto I don’t think it’ll be console exclusive very long,” he added. “But that’s what happens when you have a brand new launch with two companies that have lots of money trying to make sure they have content.”

The targets are high, but so is the goal: releasing Verilog source code for a GPU implementation. The source will be open source, LGPL-licensed, and suitable for loading onto an FPGA. The first target is for a 2D GPU with PCI interface; perhaps not terribly interesting in itself, but the first stretch goal is much more exciting: full OpenGL and Direct3D graphics."Unlike the Open Graphics Project, this is starting from a working 2D accelerator and mostly working 3D accelerator cloning the features of the Number Nine Ticket to Ride hardware. If they get a meelion bucks they'll overhaul the chip to support something other than PCI (although you can bridge between PCI and PCIe) and implement a modern programmable rather than fixed-function chip. Also unlike OGP, they do not appear interested in producing hardware, instead focusing entirely on the core itself for use in FPGAs (anyone want to dust off the OGD1 design?)

"Ed Felton writes about an incident, in 2003, in which someone tried to backdoor the Linux kernel. Back in 2003 Linux used BitKeeper to store the master copy of the Linux source code. If a developer wanted to propose a modification to the Linux code, they would submit their proposed change, and it would go through an organized approval process to decide whether the change would be accepted into the master code. But some people didn't like BitKeeper, so a second copy of the source code was kept in CVS. On November 5, 2003, Larry McAvoy noticed that there was a code change in the CVS copy that did not have a pointer to a record of approval. Investigation showed that the change had never been approved and, stranger yet, that this change did not appear in the primary BitKeeper repository at all. Further investigation determined that someone had apparently broken in electronically to the CVS server and inserted a small change to wait4: 'if ((options == (__WCLONE|__WALL)) && (current->uid = 0)) ...' A casual reading makes it look like innocuous error-checking code, but a careful reader would notice that, near the end of the first line, it said '= 0' rather than '== 0' so the effect of this code is to give root privileges to any piece of software that called wait4 in a particular way that is supposed to be invalid. In other words it's a classic backdoor. We don't know who it was that made the attempt—and we probably never will. But the attempt didn't work, because the Linux team was careful enough to notice that that this code was in the CVS repository without having gone through the normal approval process. 'Could this have been an NSA attack? Maybe. But there were many others who had the skill and motivation to carry out this attack,' writes Felton. 'Unless somebody confesses, or a smoking-gun document turns up, we'll never know.'"

Forget Call of Duty and Battlefield. A new rivalry is in town and it's fresher than the green grass on your local farm.
Excalibur Publishing has announced that Farming Manager will hit PC retail shelves on October 25th, priced at £24.99.
The company previously published the popular Farming Simulator series which was later picked up by Focus Home Interactive, who released Farming Simulator 2013 on consoles last year.
However, there is no new Farming Simulator game planned for this year, allowing the new rival Farming Manager game to enter the market without fresh competition.
Excalibur describes Farming Manager as the company's "first farming management simulation", and the screenshots suggest it will play more like an isometric strategy game, rather than a management sim that allows players to control tractors from within the virtual driver's seat.
"In Farming Manager, you inherit a ramshackle old farm which needs whipping back into shape. Take on the challenge and follow in your grandpa’s footsteps," said Excalibur in a statement.
Farming Manager allows players to employ personnel, purchase new buildings, vehicles and fields, rear dairy cattle, check soil quality, invest in new machinery and tractors, renovate and expand the in-game house, and deal with random events such as gambling debts, inheritance, tax and vet bills.
It also features unlockable talents, a 3D mentor and different seasons.

[Benoit Frigon]‘s builds are a tribute to tidiness: both his HTPC and media server are elegant creations packed full of features. He has quite the knack for clean builds in this form factor; his PBX server was met with high praise earlier this summer.
For the HTPC, [Benoit] gutted and cleaned an old DVR case and modified it to house a Mini-ITX board. He added standoff mounts to support the motherboard, then sketched up a template for the IO shield as a guide for cutting the back panel. The front of the DVR case originally had a 4-digit 7-segment display and a few simple buttons. Though he kept the original button layout, [Benoit] chose to replace the segment displays with a 20×2 character LCD. The new display is controlled via a python script on the HTPC, which runs an OpenElec Linux distro with XBMC 12.0.
The HTPC’s hard drive bay is a bit lighter these days, because [Benoit] decided to migrate his media storage to a separate server. Inside the new home media server is yet another Mini-ITX motherboard with an embedded Atom N2800 that runs Ubuntu Server. Live television streams via a WinTV HVR-2550 TV tuner and TVHeadend software. The case originally suspended the tuner from the IO bracket on the back (and nowhere else), which left the rest of the card dangerously unsupported inside. [Benoit] solved the problem by building an additional aluminum bracket that firmly holds both the PCIe riser and the tuner. Check out both builds’ pages for downloadable templates, software details and bill of materials.

Another triple-A title has revealed some pretty hefty requirements for PC gamers.
Although not in the same league as the frankly astronomical CPU needs named in the Watch Dogs spec sheet, Activision’s Call of Duty: Ghosts specs certainly contain a couple of notable highlights.
The Minimum specs require a comparatively modest CPU – either an Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 2.66Ghz or AMD Phenom X3 8750 2.4Ghz. The GPU requirements are reasonable too, starting with either an Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti or AMD Radeon HD 5870.
However, like Watch Dogs the game will require a 64-bit OS and a minimum of 6GB system RAM.
The stat that will attract the most attention is the huge 50GB HDD requirement, which according toEurogamer is down to the game’s support of 4K displays and the massive texture files that come as a result.
These textures may also be the reason behind the Recommended Graphics card requirement – a top-end Nvidia GTX 780.

"Microsoft paid out over $28,000 in rewards under its first ever bug-bounty program that went on for a month during the preview release of Internet Explorer 11 (IE11). The preview bug bounty program started on June 26 and went on till July 26 with Microsoft revealing at the time that it will pay out a maximum of $11,000 for each IE 11 vulnerability that was reported. Microsoft paid out the $28k to a total of six researchers for reporting 15 different bugs. According to Microsoft's 'honor roll' page, they paid $9,400 to James Forshaw of Context Security for pointing out design level vulnerabilities in IE11 as well as four IE11 flaws. Independent researcher Masato Kinugawa was paid $2,200 for reporting two bugs. Jose Antonio Vazquez Gonzalez of Yenteasy Security Research walked off with $5,500 for reporting five bugs while Google engineers Ivan Fratric and Fermin J. Serna were each handed out $1,100 and $500 respectively.

The official Microsoft Developer Twitter account claims the firm’s latest tablets are almost sold out.
Whether the claims are true or just being used to generate a bit of hype ahead of the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 street date on October 22nd remains to be seen, although Microsoft hasn’t actually stated how many devices have been sold.

AMD has revealed the specs, prices and release dates for the majority of its new Radeon R7 and R9 graphics cards in the US.
The entry-level R7 240 card will be priced at $69, moving up to $89 for the R7 250 and $139 for the R7 260X. The R9 270X will cost $199 for a 2GB model and $229 for a 4GB version, while the R9 280X will be priced at $299.
All these graphics cards will launch this Friday in the US (October 11th). Specific details on the top-end R9 290X and R9 290 cards are yet to be revealed.
"Built on GCN architecture, AMD Radeon R7 Series GPUs are designed to deliver optimal performance and quality for users looking to enhance the graphics performance of their PCs," said Matt Skynner, corporate vice president and general manager, Graphics Business Unit, AMD. "We have winning products at every price point and AMD is proud to be able to deliver affordable hardware designed for performance to suit the needs of every gamer."
"And with our new line of R9 Series graphics cards, tailor-made to perform with the next generation of PC games, AMD has proved that Radeon is gaming."
Chip maker AMD previously announced the products last month - and it's rumoured rival Nvidia will lower the price of its GTX Titan and 780 graphics cards to compete with AMD.

Valve has said its upcoming Steam Machines are not specifically intended to replace the PC and can instead be used as a bridge between a user's existing gaming computer and the living room.
In a message on the Steam Universe community page, the company said Steam Machines could be designed to stream content from a more powerful PC to a living room set-up.
"High-powered SteamOS living room machines are nice, and fun to play with, and will make many Steam customers happy", reads the statement, "but there are a lot of other Steam customers who already have perfectly great gaming hardware at home in the form of a powerful PC.
"The prototype we're talking about here is not meant to replace that. Many of those users would like to have a way to bridge the gap into the living room without giving up their existing hardware and without spending lots of money.
"We think that's a great goal, and we're working on ways to use our in-home streaming technology to accomplish it - we'll talk more about that in the future."
Steam Machines are due for commercial release next year and will come in different forms with different specs. While some will be constructed with high-end components to offer top end performance, others will prioritise low cost or a small form factor.
Prototype Steam Machines being sent to users for beta testing have been confirmed as "high-end, high-performance" boxes built using off the shelf PC parts.
Steam Machines were revealed in September as part of three announcements covering Valve's strategy to bring Steam games to the living room.
The company also revealed the SteamOS operating system, designed to be used on larger TVs, as well as a new Valve controller designed to offer innovative new input mechanics.
