Ghost 'n Goblins Online's Steam Greenlight page was evidently posted by mistake by the game's Korean developer Seed 9 Games."The Steam Greenlight page for Ghosts 'n Goblins Online that went live yesterday was wrongly posted by the game's Korean developer, Seed 9, and the page has now been removed," Capcom said in a statement issued to Eurogamer. "Ghosts 'n Goblins was released last year in Korea, China and Taiwan and currently there are no plans for the title to be released in Europe or North America."

Microsoft announced back at its Build developer conference that it was bringing Internet Explorer 11 to Windows 7, and it's already partially made good on that promise by letting developers get an early look. By now, though, the company's given the browser enough spit and polish that it's ready for public consumption: the Release Preview is now available for anybody to download. As you'd expect, Microsoft claims IE11 is the fastest desktop browser available, and that it's 30 percent quicker than the next-fastest browser (that would be Firefox, or at least that's what Microsoft says). Also, the Release Preview is apparently a bit speedier than the Developer Preview was back in June: Redmond says average SunSpider scores have dropped from 144ms to an even-better 137ms. At any rate, now that the browser's available, you're free to download it and benchmark it yourself, if that's what floats your boat.

What do a fanless PC and a motion-controlled laptop have in common? Nothing, really; just that HP is going to be first to market with both of these things. After teasinga fanless tablet back in June, the company has formally announced the Spectre 13 x2, which isn't actually a tablet so much as a hybrid laptop. Additionally, HP unveiled a special edition version of its Envy 17 notebook with a Leap Motion controller built intothe palm rest.
Starting with the Leap Motion machine, this is truly the same Envy 17 that's already on the market, complete with an aluminum chassis, backlit keyboard and generous Beats branding. Except, you know, it has a conspicuous motion sensor below the keyboard, allowing you to control games and other apps using hand gestures. Per Leap Motion's requirements, HP includes a shortcut to Leap Motion's Airspace Store, where there are currently 100-plus apps and counting. (If you read our review, you know the selection is hit or miss.) Once you calibrate the sensor, you can turn the controller off by pressing the spacebar plus the Fn key; a small LED indicator will light up to let you know when it's on. Surprisingly, too, that the sensor doesn't add to the thickness of the laptop, as the module only measures 3.5mm thick (granted, a 17-inch machine probably has plenty of leeway inside the chassis). Look for it October 16th, with a starting price of $1,049.99 and your choice of Intel processors and NVIDIA graphics.

[Tomas Janco] had an old Casio Pocket Viewer PDA collecting dust. Rather than throw it away, He decided to re-purpose it as a display for time, weather, and the current status of his garage door.
The Casio Pocket Viewer was a competitor to the Palm Pilot. The two systems even shared the same LCD resolution – 160×160 monochrome. [Tomas’] particular model is an S660, sporting 6 megabytes of ram and an NEC V30MZ (Intel 8086 compatible) processor. Similar to Palm, Casio made an SDK freely available.
The SDK is still available from Casio, and [Tomas] was able to get it running on his PC. Development wasn’t without pitfalls though. The Pocket Viewer SDK was last updated in April of 2001. Software is written in C, but the then new C99 standard is not supported. The SDK does include a simulator and debugger, but it too is not as polished as todays systems – every simulator startup begins with setting the clock and calibrating the touch screen. Keep reading after the jump to learn about the rest of the hurdles he overcame to pull this one off.

The decline in PCs is not having any detrimental effect on Steam, which according to owner Valve continues to post impressive growth.
CVG reports that Valve MD Gabe Newell told an audience at the Linuxcon event in New Orleans that Steam is not mirroring the trends seen in PC hardware.
“We are looking at steady, year-over-year unit declines in PC sales, and the people in the field are the deer in the headlights," he stated. "I think we'll see significant restructurings, or market exits, by top-five companies in the PC space. It's looking pretty grim.
"So despite the huge declines in PC sales, on the gaming side there's growth. Steam is going up 76 per cent year-on-year while PCs are going through double-digit declines."
These changes in the market are also the reason behind Valve’s decision to bring Steam to Linux.
"Several years ago we got very concerned about directions that the PC was going. We thought there was some bad thinking," he added.
"There were these new platforms that started to emerge, and they had this nice characteristic that [they] could control access to those platforms. If you didn't like competing with Google, you just didn't let them ship on your device, or you could determine how often they update. You could have control on things like pricing, and that was a very seductive opportunity which led to some poor decisions by the key players in the PC space.
"The openness of the PC as a games platform has enabled us to be somewhat immunised against the broader structural decline of the PC. PC gaming is where innovation is occurring. It's not on the consoles, it's not on the closed systems, it's happening to the extent to which a games platform is open.
“So on PC you have digital distribution, you have social gaming, free-to-play, MMO, trading - most interesting topics are really coming out of the PC. We've seen tremendous evolution of innovation in the open PC space."

Multi-display gaming has really found a niche in the world of high-end PC gaming, starting when AMD released Eyefinity in 2009 in three-panel configurations. AMD expanded out to six-screen options in 2010 and NVIDIA followed shortly thereafter with a similar multi-screen solution called Surround. Over the last 12 months or so, GPU performance testing has gone through a sort of revolution as the move from software measurement to hardware capture measurement has taken hold. PC Perspective has done testing with this new technology on AMD Eyefinity and NVIDIA Surround configurations at 5760x1080 resolution and found there were some substantial anomalies in the AMD captures. The AMD cards exhibited dropped frames, interleaved frames (jumping back and forth between buffers) and even stepped, non-horizontal vertical sync tearing. The result is a much lower observed frame rate than software like FRAPS would indicate and these problems will also be found when using the current top-end, dual-head 4K PC displays since they emulate Eyefinity and Surround for setup."

Microsoft has sent out invites for a Surface event next Monday (September 23rd), at which the launch of the Surface 2 is expected.
The press invites received from Microsoft show a Surface and its keyboard cover with “You’re invited/Monday, September 23, 2013” on the screen.
The Verge is reporting that the Surface 2 and Surface 2 Pro will be unveiled at the event, with sources saying a rumoured ‘Surface Mini’ will not appear. The Surface 2 is said to be dropping the “RT” prefix of the original Surface, but will still run Windows 8.1 RT.
The design of the new tablets is claimed to be similar to the last generation of the Surface, but will include a two-stage kickstand. Inside, Intel’s new Haswell processor and 8GB of RAM will power the device, with the new processor predicted to add around two hours of battery life.
The screen for the Surface 2 is also rumoured to get an upgrade, increasing to a 1080p display, running on Nvidia’s Tegra 4 graphics.
For extra battery life, an improved keyboard cover is said to be planned, which will feature an in-built battery to boost the Surface 2’s estimated eight hours of battery life. A new docking station and power cover are also expected.
The event announcement follows Microsoft’s $40 billion buyback plan and its increase of its dividend by 22 per cent, bringing its quarterly dividend to 28 cents a share. Microsoft’s stock has risen 23 per cent in 2013, closing at $32.93 in New York this week.

It's funny how, as time passes, we grow fonder of gadgets that were once disregarded. Nerd nostalgia has a knack of trumping common sense and draining wallets, which is why we're almost hesitant to bring this auction of Palm and webOS gear to your attention. Featuring the collection of a former webOS employee, you'll find everything from t-shirts, posters and other branded paraphernalia, through to a mint-condition Palm VII PDA, 4G TouchPads and a range of mobiles, including many from the long-forgotten Pre series. The prize piece, however, has to be the boxed, unused Palm Foleocomplete with an hour of phone time with one of the product's OG engineers, who also "has apps for you," apparently. All money raised from the auction is going to a charitable cause, which totally justifies whatever exaggerated sum Palm's nigh-mythical flop ends up going for.

If you already have Windows 8 installed on your PC, Windows 8.1 will be a free upgrade in the Windows Store. (But if you own a Windows 8 PC, you probably already knew that.) Now, Microsoft has revealed pricing for people who plan on installing Windows 8.1 on a system that currently runs some older version of Windows (i.e., Win 7). If you're just now making the switch (was it the return of the Start button that sold you?) you can expect to pay $120 for Windows 8.1 and $200 for Windows 8.1 Pro. Yep, the same prices you'd currently pay for a copy of Windows 8.
Interestingly, too, Microsoft will be selling so-called full-version software, which means you don't already need to have Windows running on your machine to complete the installation. All told, you'll be able to either download the software from Windows.com, or buy an old-fashioned box set in a retail store, if that's your thing. Whatever your preference, you'll have to wait until October 17th, just like the cool kids who'll be getting it for free.

SimCity fans know nothing feels better than saving their other family from pollution and sickness -- except, you know, helping out some fellow human beings. A new collaboration with the Red Cross combines players' digital altruism with humanitarian aid for real-world disaster victims. Starting today, you'll be able to purchase a $9.99 "charity pack" created specifically for the game, with a relief center, tents and two emergency response vehicles. In the event of a meteor strike, earthquake or tornado, the Red Cross tents will automatically appear to provide aid for injured Sims, and a fleet of ambulances and fire trucks will be on call as well.
SimCity creator EA Games has pledged to contribute at least 80 percent of profits (a minimum of $100,000) from the charity pack to the Red Cross National Societies. The set will be available for a year, and you'll be able to keep it through the life of your current game. Currently, the pack is only available for players in 10 countries, including Denmark, France, the US and the UK.

Mention of both the PC and PS4 versions of Grand Theft Auto V have supposedly been dug up in the game’s Xbox 360 source code.
Cinema Blend reports on the alleged discovery of the platform mentions in the code, with specific mention of “Orbis” – the operating system for Playstation 4 dev kits.
The information was posted on a since-deleted Pastebin page, listing around 2,000 lines of code from the game. Curiously, no indication of the Xbox One version could be found in the section.
While the find certainly isn’t confirmation for the game on other platforms, it’s likely to put a smile on the face of many a PC owner. According to Game Politics, a petition for the game to release on PC recently topped 365k signatures.

Windows XP is going to officially die and stop receiving support from Microsoft in April, 2014. After that very moment, it is said to become a gold mine for hackers all over the world who will exploit 'zero-day' vulnerabilities. The municipality of the German city of Munich wants to stop that from happening [and] has decided to distribute free CDs with Ubuntu 12.04 to users of the almost extinct XP. Munich, through its Gasteig Library, will prepare around 2000 CDs with Ubuntu 12.04 to offer to city residents affected by Windows XP's end of support. Previously, it was believed that Munich city's authorities were going to offer Lubuntu 12.04, which would have required lower system requirements with the same support period.

Rumors are circulating that Barnes & Noble is going to release their new hardware soon. Two different sources inside B&N have confirmed that a launch is imminent, with one saying B&N will launch both a tablet and an ereader. The other says that a new tablet is coming. I tend to think that the first source is probably right because product pages for several accessories leaked in early August. The pages referenced 2 different new models. Also, B&N recently announced plans to continue to develop both new ereaders and tablets, though they've changed their minds so much that I don't know if that announcement is worth anything

Linus Torvalds has released Linux 3.12-rc1, marking the first major development in over two weeks for the forthcoming successor of the Linux 3.11 kernel. Announcing the closure of the 3.12 merge window, Torvalds said in the release announcement that the window was fairly normal. Dissecting the updates, he noted that 73 percent of them are related to drivers, 12 percent related to architecture updates, and 6 percent related to file systems. ... Torvalds liked the 'scalability improvements that got merged this time around.' Torvalds also mentioned the tty layer locking getting resolved, and work on dentry refcount scalability."

"When Blizzard built Diablo III, one of the controversial features was the inclusion of an auction house for players to buy and sell gear. On one hand, it created a safe environment for trading, which had been rife with scams in Diablo II. On the other hand, gathering loot was one of the main points of the game, and the auction house trivialized that. According to an announcement on Battle.net, both the Real Money auction house and the Gold auction house will be removed from the game as part of Blizzard's revamp of the loot system in Diablo III. The target date is well ahead of us: March 18, 2014. Blizzard said, 'We feel that this move along with the Loot 2.0 system being developed concurrently with Reaper of Soulswill result in a much more rewarding game experience for our players.' Unexpected news, to be sure."

"Mozilla today officially launched Firefox 24 for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android. Improvements include a new option to mass close tabs 'to the right,' as well as WebRTC support and NFC sharing on Android. Firefox 24 has now been released over on Firefox.com and all existing users should be able to upgrade to it automatically. As always, the Android version is trickling out slowly on Google Play. Compared to Firefox 23, this isn’t a big release for the desktop. Mac users will notice a new scrollbar style on OS X 10.7 and users of the browsers social features will appreciate the ability to tear-off chat windows by just dragging (full release notes: desktop, mobile).

At CloudOpen in New Orleans, KVM veterans Avi Kivity and Dor Laor revealed their latest venture, a new open-source (BSD license) operating system named OSv. OSv can run existing Linux programs and runtime environments such as a JVM, but unlike Linux, OSv was designed from the ground up to run efficiently on virtual machines. For example, OSv avoids the traditional (but slow) userspace-kernel isolation, as on the cloud VMs normally run a single application. OSv is also much smaller than Linux, and breaks away from tradition by being written in C++11 (the language choice is explained in in this post).

Industry trends and shifts start from the PC, says Valve boss
The open environment of the PC platform is providing a hotbed for innovation, says Valve’s Gabe Newell.
Speaking at LinuxCon, as reported byPCGamesN, the Valve boss said such creativity was not appearing on consoles or any closed systems, and was coming from open platforms such as the PC.
“PC gaming is where innovation is occurring, and you’ll see that in lots of ways,” said Newell.
“It’s not on the consoles, it’s not on any of the closed systems where any of the innovation is happening; it’s happening to the extent to which openness is embraced by the underlying platform.”
Newell also claimed that many of the leading industry trends and shifts and begun on PC, including the likes of digital distribution, free-to-play and MMOs, highlighting the importance of such an open platform.
He added that despite a decline in PC sales, there were huge increases in game sales, with Steam seeing a rise of 76 per cent year-on-year.
“So in spite of seeing year over year unit declines in PC sales, on the gaming side we’re seeing huge increases,” said Newell.
“So the data I’m most familiar with is ours, but... we’re going up 76 per cent year over year, at the same time PC sales are getting double digit declines, and I think that’s true for all of our partners in the PC space to a varying degree; that the innovation and openness of the PC as a gaming platform have enabled us to be somewhat immunised against some of the broader structural decline of the PC.”

Toys R Us is acting coy over whether it will bring its new 'tablet stores' to the UK or not.
The retail chain is adding dedicated 'tablet shops within a shop' to all 600-plus of its US outlets this autumn as part of a refit, reports Twice. These will measure 32ft long and contain 25 live display models - both family and child-focused products.
But when asked whether these will be heading to the UK, Mike Coogan, Director of Marketing and E-Commerce at Toys R Us UK, told PCR: "We sell a wide variety of tablets in our UK stores, but generally our methods of display vary from country to country."
Exec VP and chief merchandising officer Richard Barry said: "Tablets are very popular with young kids. [We have introduced these tablet stores] to counter headwinds in the consumer electronics and entertainment businesses.”
Toys R Us saw double-digit sales growth among children aged 11 and below.
Tablets in the new US displays include the Meep X2 by Oregon Scientific, the Kurio 10s from TechnoSource (InspirationWorks in the UK), the XO Tablet from Sakar, Toys R Us’ own-label Tabeo E2 and more.
Barry added that the tablet stores will be accompanied by a "dynamic online component".
Tablets have proven to be a very popular product for children in recent years, especially during the Christmas period, with products like the InnoTab, Kurio and LeapPad selling strongly in the UK.
