Another installment in the ever-popular Knights of the Old Republic series was in pre-production at Obsidian, creative director Chris Avellone told Eurogamer. Avellone said KOTOR 3 would have featured the character Revan more thanKOTOR 2, from which the character was largely absent.
"I always liked the idea that Revan, as smart and powerful as your player-character was, was actually even more of a brilliant strategist than became apparent in the first game," Avellone said of Revan's role in the first game. "The entire second game is littered with clues as to 'why didn't Revan destroy the infrastructure here? What was he trying to make sure was still intact? What did he/she see that no one else saw?'" The third game would have players tracking down Revan as a character deemed "The Exile."
Allevone said, "it felt like we were pitching and pitching [to LucasArts] and it just wasn't going anywhere, and at some point people just drew a line and said 'it's just not going to happen,' which made us kind of sad, but, OK, if that's the business, that's the business." Obsidian's pitch to Disney in February 2013 for a new Star Wars game was different than KOTOR 3, according to Eurogamer. Obviously, this was before EA obtained the exclusive rights to develop and publish Star Wars games in May 2013.

Ouya-exclusive first-person puzzler Polarity is heading to PC, one-man studio BlueButton Games has announced.Better yet, it's adding Oculus Rift support. Our Dan Whitehead reviewed the vaguely Portal-inspired puzzler upon its original Ouya release where he noted that while it couldn't best Valve's comedy classic, "there are still moments of ingenuity that come incredibly close to the best puzzles that GLaDOS threw at you."Polarity developer Craig Littler - who's previously worked on Forza Horizon and MotorStorm: Pacific Rift - explained to me that he actually wanted to make Polarity a permanent exclusive for Ouya, but he would have required at least a little more money to broker such a deal. "I tried to negotiate with Ouya to remain exclusive but they were fairly resistant to change and as such I think there will be plenty of devs who just use them as 'another platform' rather than committing to them exclusively.," he said.

SOE president John Smedley says "our players can actually make better stuff than us," entire company moving toward emergent content
[h=3]Sony Online Entertainment[/h]sonyonline.com
Four years after development on EverQuest Next began, Sony Online Entertainment finally showed it off today at its SOE Live fan fest event in Las Vegas. With an emphasis on player-created content and an open-ended gameplay experience, SOE president John Smedley sees the game as the launching point for a new "Emergent Era" in MMO games.
"We're not just making the next MMO," Smedley told GamesIndustry International. "We're really inventing an entirely new genre within online gaming and we're moving our entire company toward the concept of emergent content. Everquest Next is sort of the culmination of this concept of emergent gameplay where players are basically playing a large simulation, a large sandbox, and they're making content themselves. And they're part of this content ecosystem where players can sell or buy from one another, or from us. We're basically taking the game and we're stretching it in completely new ways with this emergent gameplay idea."
On the content creation front, SOE will launch the free-to-play EverQuest Next Landmark this winter. A building tool with an MMO's social functionality, Landmark will let players work together to create their own structures (and sometime post-launch, other types of content as well) using resources collected from persistent worlds. Those creations will then be considered for inclusion in the full version of EverQuest Next, and SOE developers will give users guidance on what structures they most need during development. Ultimately, Landmark is expected to help address the problem of MMO game users consuming content faster than developers can actually create it.
"You're not going to Disneyland. The equivalent is we drove you to Africa in the middle of the biggest wild animal preserve there is and handed you a jeep and a gun, and said have fun."
John Smedley
Smedley acknowledged the idea for user-created content originally came from Valve, but SOE is looking to build on the idea by being the first company to bring it to MMOs in a smooth-working manner, making it easy for players to be a part of the creation community. SOE has already dabbled in user-made content with its Player Studio program, which lets gamers create in-game items for titles like EverQuest, and receive a share of 40 percent of revenues it brings in if it's included in the SOE Marketplace.
"We've learned that great content really does sell, and our players can actually make better stuff than us," Smedley said of the Player Studio program. "So our goal here is to set it up so our players can make money just like we can with this ecosystem we want to build. What we've learned is that it really does work."
Beyond involving players in building the EverQuest Next world, SOE's sandbox approach to the game experience should also sidestep the common MMO pitfall of players racing through scripted content too quickly. Smedley said the established MMO formula amounts to a guided theme park experience, but SOE is aiming at something very different with EverQuest Next.
"You're not going to Disneyland," Smedley said. "The equivalent is we drove you to Africa in the middle of the biggest wild animal preserve there is and handed you a jeep and a gun, and said have fun. That's the difference, Disneyland versus that. We're making that."
SOE has no announced release window for EverQuest Next.

Future players of Blizzard’s upcoming MMO Titan are unlikely to be asked to pay a monthly subscription to access the game.
So says Blizzard CEO Michel Morhaime, who told investors last night the company is still thrashing out its strategy for the title.
“I want to say a few words about our unannounced project, codename Titan,” he said, as reported by Seeking Alpha. “We're in the process of selecting a new direction for the project and re-envisioning what we want the game to be.
“And while we can't talk about the details yet, it is unlikely to be a subscription-based MMORPG.
“I also want to reiterate that there has not been an official announced or projected release date. What I can say is that the commitment's quality has always been at the core of Blizzard values. And we've gone through this type of iterative development process several times in the past on the way to creating genre-defining games.
“As we continue our assessment, we have shifted some of the resources from the team to our other franchises, including World of Warcraft and Blizzard All-Stars, which we believe will add immense value to those projects.”

Bethesda shooter franchise reboot delayed, split-gen development and polish cited as reasons
[h=3]Bethesda Softworks[/h]The Bethesda Softworks division, founded in 1986, has a long history of success as a developer and publisher...
bethsoft.com
Bethesda Softworks just lost the only game on its holiday release schedule. The studio's VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines confirmed for Polygon today that Wolfenstein: The New Order has been delayed to sometime in 2014.
"Working on next-gen and current gen definitely has an impact, you're developing for two different things," Hines said. "The fact that the next-gen stuff is still moving is also definitely a factor. But the most important thing was definitely just looking where it was at, what they needed to polish."
Hines explained that the game has been in development at Swedish studio Machine Games for a long time, adding, "You don't want to waste all that time and effort for the sake of a couple of months..." The studio was formed in 2009 and acquired by Bethesda in 2010. Wolfenstein: The New Order will be its first release. Machine Games does have a notable pedigree, having been formed by veterans of Starbreeze Entertainment, developer of shooters like The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher's Bay and The Darkness.

Soccer life simulator Lords of Football will come to retail, says the game's developer Geniaware.
The firm launched the game as a digital download back in April, and has already started releasing DLC to improve quality.
The simulator – which has been described as a cross between The Sims and Football Manager – has been created in collaboration with Italian and Chelsea football legend, Gianluca Vialli.
“It has been an interesting start for us as we decided to go it alone,” says Geniaware boss Claudio Giacopazzi. “Now we have released our first DLC and have other content being finalised. We are continuing to grow the game and the fun factor.
“We decided to go it alone with a digital release but retail is not something we will forget. There will be a retail box.”
Vialli himself added: “We decided to go solo for digital publishing, because we see this as the future. But we are speaking with publishers and getting close. I want to have a box, so that when you walk into a shop, you can see your game there. That’s a good feeling.”
Vialli wants the game to hit more platforms, too.
“Lords of Football is perfect for PC, but I also think it will work well with the next-gen consoles.”

Part of the fun of Total War is the freedom of heading back to a well-realised period in history and rewriting the hell out of it: having the Gauls control the entirety of Italy, for instance, or turning Britain into the northern tip of the far-reaching Carthaginian Empire. It’s a slight shame, then, that we have to stick to the historical script while playing Rome II’s prologue campaign. This involved tutorial chronicles the rise of a domestic power in Italy: Rome has to quash the rival city state of Samnium before starting its campaigns throughout the rest of the globe. While the narrative shackles slightly chafe – especially when we’re introduced to the sprawling, but boundary-encircled campaign map – the prologue campaign tries to atone for this with the injection of more character drama than you can find in the game, courtesy of a Mark Strong-voiced protagonist. It also functions as a fine (though, we expect, probably not entirely reliable) history lesson while efficiently introducing some of Rome II’s more significant upgrades.Chief among these is a much more naturalistic treatment of sightlines. You’ve always had a godlike view of the battlefield, of course – this a realtime strategy game, after all – but now you’ll find yourself less omniscient, only able to see enemy units if one of your own clusters of soldiers has a direct view of them. Anything can break a sightline – a hill, a forest, a city street – and this means that scouting and environmental awareness have become a much more crucial part of the game. In one battle, we have to move a unit to the top of a hill before we can see the gigantic Samnite army coming. In another, we use a forested ridge to hide our soldiers in a village before descending upon an undefended piece of Samnite siege equipment. This subtle, but potentially far-reaching tweak can be felt most keenly when attacking cities – battles throughout the streets are more claustrophobic and more tactical now, as you can be ambushed by the city’s defenders while also using their own buildings and walls to sneak auxilliary forces past them.Elsewhere, however, the game plays according to the familiar rhythms of Total War. The prologue campaign ignores the delicate political intricacies of statecraft. There’s no diplomacy nor any of the internal power battles that will define the Roman factions in the main game, focusing instead on the practicalities of waging war. We learn how to train new units, for instance, a streamlined process in comparison to previous games. The unit types available for recruitment within a region hinge on the buildings and structures you’ve established in that region’s city. Once you’ve built the requisite building (stables, say, for cavalry) you can generate the new unit within the legion itself, rather than recruiting it and then marching it over to the bulk of your forces. This is part of a focus on legions as singular powerhouses, rather than smaller groups of soldiers, that will see you adding traits to armies as they gain experience, potentially allowing specfic legions to specialise in certain forms of warfare.

During the three months in question, Sega's consumer business segment, which houses video games, generated net sales of 18.9 billion yen (£127m / $193m), up from 15.1 billion yen for the same period a year earlier.
The segment also made a small profit of 39 million yen (£262,000 / $399,000), compared to a 1.6 billion yen (£10.7m / $16.4m) loss a year earlier.
First quarter packaged software sales declined from 2.76 million units a year earlier to 1.21 million, with 570,000 boxed games sold in Europe, 370,000 in the US and 250,000 in Japan.
In contrast, Sega said digital software sales "remained favourable". Combined digital and packaged sales of online RPG Phantasy Star Online 2 hit 500,000 units in the quarter.
Parent company Sega Sammy reported a healthy set of results for the business as a whole. First quarter net sales grew 29.6 per cent 90.7 billion yen (£609m / $928m), while net income rocketed 408.8 per cent to 12.95 billion yen (£87m / $133m).

Blizzard will host a press conference at Germany's Gamescom on August 21.
The company confirmed in an invite to Destructoid that the event will take place from 11:30am CET (10:30am UK, 2:30am Pacific), but offered no further specifics.
The invite only teased that the event is "sure to capture the attention of the Heavens, Burning Hells and all the shadowed places that lie between", which could possibly relate to Diablo 3, which is due for release on consoles just over a week after the event.
Blizzard has confirmed a Diablo 3 release date of September 3 on PS3 and Xbox 360. Customers who pre-order will receive an exclusive in-game item, the Infernal Helm, which grants an experience point boost to any character who wears it.
The game is also in development for PS4 which is out later this year, but the developer has said it will not be a PS4 launch title. The next-gen version will use the touchpad on the new DualShock 4 controller to make UI and inventory navigation more intuitive.
You can check out a Diablo 3 PS3 gameplay video here.

"Around a year ago, a school in the southeast of England, Westcliff High School for Girls Academy (WHSG), began switching itsstudent-facing computers to Linux, with KDE providing the desktop software. The school's Network Manager, Malcolm Moore, contacted us at the time. Now, a year on, he got in touch again to let us know how he and the students find life in a world without Windows."And they didn't even meet much resistance: "Younger students accept it as normal. Older students can be a little less flexible. There are still a few that are of the view that I can get rid of Microsoft Word when I can pry it from them. Staff are the same (although it is surprisingly not age-related). Some are OK and some hate it. Having said that, an equal number hate Windows 7 and nobody liked Windows 8. I think the basic problem is that Windows XP is a victim of its own success. It works fairly well from a user point of view, it's been around practically forever, and people don't like change, even some students, oddly

Rockstar's upcoming Grand Theft Auto 5 will shake the studio's best-selling open-world template up a great deal by introducing the option to switch between three characters on the fly while the two unpossessed members will continue going about their business. Now, some clever modders have created a way to implement this into Grand Theft Auto 4.With the mod installed, you'll be able to hop between roles as GTA 4 protagonist Niko Bellic, The Lost and Damned's Johnny Klebitz, and The Ballad of Gay Tony's Luis Fernando Lopez. Whoever you're not playing as will wander the streets on their own or attempt to evade the cops if they have a wanted level greater than zero. Each character has their own health, armour, ammo and vehicle which are saved every time you swap roles.

Ballmer and Co. have been tight lipped when it comes to Surface sales figures, but they've finally opened up a little -- albeit at Uncle Sam's behest. An SEC filing reveals that the first-party tablet raked in a total of $853 million in revenue between its debut and June 30th, the end of the firm's fiscal year. To put that in perspective, the cash Microsoft managed to rake in is eclipsed by a $900 million hit it took through Surface RT inventory adjustments. To make matters worse, the company spent more on advertising for Windows 8 and Surface (an extra $898 million), than its tablet brought in. Though details on how many slates have shipped or sold are still MIA, price dropsmake us suspect that those numbers are still too modest for Redmond's taste.

Microsoft has mistakenly asked Google to remove certain links to its own website from searches, reports suggest.
Online content protection firm LeakID is said to have sent Google a takedown request on behalf of Microsoft, to stop tracking parts of Microsoft.com, reports Torrentfreak.
These kind of Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) requests are usually made to report infringing links, which Google inspects and potentially removes from its search engine, but it appears this Microsoft one was sent in error.
The links listed include older Microsoft product and support pages, including a page on Microsoft Office 2003.
However, it seems Google noticed Microsoft's apparent mistake and has not removed the Microsoft.com pages from its search results.
Google has received takedown requests for over 100 million links this year alone.

An announcement from BioShock Infinite developer Irrational Games will be made Tuesday morning, says studio head Ken Levine.
The announcement - expected to relate to BioShock Infinite DLC - will be made around 8am EST (5am PST, 1pm UK time), according to Levine.
The announcement was expected today following a vague teaser via Levine's Twitter feed over the weekend, but new posts today clarify that news will break tomorrow.
"Check the internets tuesday at around 8AM est to see what I'm up to tomw," said Levine in an update today. "News will be out on tues," he went on to assert.
The mystery reveal would appear to tie in with a BioShock Infinite expansion DLC announcement previously teased for a 'late July' unveiling.
Irrational has confirmed plans to release three BioShock Infinite DLC packs, adding "hours of additional gameplay and continue the player's journey in the sky-city of Columbia with new stories, characters, abilities and weapons".
It is rumoured that the first DLC expansion will add a new AI companion to the game, following an apparent leak on a developer CV.
Update: In related news, a game update titled 'Patch 6' has been released for BioShock Infinite on PC, which has "added features necessary to support upcoming DLC", according to the Steam patch notes.
There's no further detail on what this means specifically, but it lends further weight to the expectation that a DLC announcement is looming.
The update is also said to "fix issue where the navigation assist / nav aid arrow was not showing the path of jumping from the deck of the barge to the sky-line above when viewing it from the barge after the town lottery".

IT distributor Entatech is excited by Microsoft's latest operating system update Windows 8.1 which launches later this year.
Microsoft confirmed earlier this month that development on Windows 8.1 would be completed by August, with all Windows based devices being pre-loaded with the update in time for Christmas, such as the range of Fujitsu Stylistic tablets which are supplied by Entatech.
Windows 8.1 boasts new features and functions and is optimised to work effectively on small devices like tablet PCs. A new search function brings a combined list of results from the user's PC, apps and the web, while a slide-show function allows users to personalise their lock screen with their own images.
Windows 8.1 also provides the consumer with the ability to multitask - it has a side loading function where two applications can sit side by side on the same screen. Furthermore, a built-in SkyDrive storage system provides on-the-go file access – even when offline. A SkyDrive app also allows users to manage local and SkyDrive files in one location.
For a Windows 8.1 preview, view the official demo video here: Entaonline.com/vendor-shop/microsoft-office/windows8.htm.
Jon Atherton, Entatech Vice President, said: “This is going to be an exciting time for both Microsoft and Entatech. With Windows 8.1 launching, we will not only have the means on which to offer our resellers with a new, improved and highly innovative product, but it will also provide a fantastic attachment opportunity, which will allow us to further build on other areas of the business.”
Entatech says it's one of the top selling distributors of Microsoft OEM in the UK.

Microsoft has explored the possibility of playing PC games in 11,520 x 2,160 resolution using three 4K ultra-HD monitors.
A post on the Windows Blog details the process of using Windows 8 to play Dirt 3 on three Sharp PN-K321 4K Ultra HD displays, with some 1.5 billion pixels per second. In total some $15,000 of gear was used to play in 11,520 x 2,160 resolution - or 24,883,200 pixels overall.
Microsoft used an ASUS HD 7970 DirectCU II card to connect the monitors, which is equipped with four full-size DisplayPort outputs.
"Settling on medium to high overall settings I was able to hold an average frame rate of about 35fps," said blogger Gavin Gear. "Because I was not dropping frames with this setup the overall gameplay experience was awesome, and the sheer quantity of pixels was truly like nothing I’ve experienced before."
The blog also details how Microsoft managed to support a 60Hz refresh rate across the three monitors.
With all settings on 'High' except shadow detail and particles, the monitors were able to maintain around 62 to 67 frames per second on average, peaking at over 70 frames per second.
