On Friday, Dell was selling Windows RT tablets for as low as $300. By this morning, the cheapest one on offer was $479. The difference? The only tablets they're selling now come bundled with keyboards, which may indicate that customers are finding even the Metro-focused RT version of Windows 8 too irritating to navigate by touch alone. (If you really want a 10-inch Dell tablet without a keyboard it looks like you can still get one on Amazon, at least for the time being.)"

Google today released Chrome version 29 for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android. The new version features improved Omnibox suggestions, profile resetting, as well as new apps and extensions APIs. The biggest change is undoubtedly around how Omnibox suggestions work on the desktop. When the feature arrived in the beta channel, Google said that the improvements were 'based on the recency of websites visited, so you’ll get more contextually relevant suggestions at the right time. ... Chrome 29 for Android meanwhile has received WebRTC support, which enables real-time communication (such as videoconferencing) in the browser without installing any plugins."

EA has announced that game titles brought on its online Origin service will be able to be refunded by unsatisfied customers.
Unlike Origin’s main rival, Valve’s Steam platform, which doesn’t offer refunds of any sort, Origin will feature a ‘Request a Refund’ button for eligible games in users’ order histories.
As outlined on an EA support page titled ‘What's the Great Game Guarantee?’, the refund must be requested within a week of the purchase of the game, or if the game has been launched, within 24 hours.
The ability to essentially return a game should assist players who find that the game runs poorly on their system, or who are entirely dissatisfied with the game itself. Whether EA will introduce extra measures to stop players buying games, completing them within a day and then returning them is unstated.
While the opportunity to receive money back on poor purchases is a move in the right direction for people who currently see digital media as overly-restricted, with EA itself accused in the past of restrictive DRM, Origin refund requests are currently limited to EA-only games and do not cover DLC.
EA states on the support page that it is ‘continuing to explore how [it] can expand the program over time in with games from other publishers and developers.’

Top overclocking and benchmark community HWBot has banned Windows 8, after the possibility of cheats using a fault in the OS’ real-time clock (RTC).
HWBot is one of the world’s most prominent databases of benchmark and overclocking records. Dedicated users submit their benchmark scores and, after moderation, are awarded points and trophies depending on how well they do. For non-enthusiasts, the extensive list of hardware combinations is an easy way of estimating how well a rig setup will run.
The ban of Microsoft’s flagship operating system Windows 8 comes after a fault in its RTC was discovered. The RTC, which keeps super-accurate time inside the computer even when the power has been turned off, is normally used to measure benchmarks thanks to its reliable accuracy.
According to HWBot, however, the Windows 8 RTC is unreliable. Microsoft’s attempts to accommodate a wider range of devices have resulted in several changes to the way time is kept by the RTC. HWBot’s ban comes a result of the effect of overclocking a CPU on the RTC, with the RTC losing time as underclocking increases. What this means is that the benchmark gives the computer a proportionally higher performance score because it seems as though the computer performs more in the allotted benchmarking time (when really the time is shorter). For more detailed stats, see this article at Extreme Tech.
The ban has also disqualified all previous records attained using Windows 8, though one of HWBot’s moderators has suggested that the decision to completely eradicate Windows 8 records is still under discussion. Whether Microsoft can or will release a patch to solve the issue is unconfirmed yet, but for the time being Windows 7 will continue its dominance as the most popular operating system in the world.

Games for Windows Live looks like it will be switched off entirely next year according to a pulled game support statement.
Microsoft's PC gaming platform launched back in 2007 in a bid to tackle other popular online services such as Steam.
But wording on the Age of Empires Online support page (a game published by Microsoft) suggests its servers will be permanently shut down next year, according to a post over at Reddit: "Games for Windows Live will be discontinued on July 1st 2014. Although it is available through Steam, Age of Empires Online requires features of the Games for Windows Live service.
"You can continue to enjoy all the features of Age of Empires Online as the service will remain 100 per cent operational until July 1st 2014 when the server will shut down."
The news comes after Microsoft announced its separate Games for Windows Live PC Marketplace will be closing on August 22nd.
The Marketplace allows players to buy and download games, while the separate Games for Windows Live is a multiplayer and digital rights management (DRM) framework.
With both looking like they'll be shut down, it could be good news for rival platforms such as Steam and Origin.

GTA Online, the multiplayer component of GTA V, will feature around 700 missions.
So revealed Rockstar Games director Leslie Benzies, who told Spanish site 3Djuegos that players will encounter missions in a variety of ways.
According to online translations, Benzies revealed that the game will always have around 500 missions available, rotated 'continuously' to keep players engaged.
Players will be able to discover missions on the map, or receive in-game phone calls from non-playable characters that will engage new jobs. Benzies says players will also have access to a more traditional list of missions via the game menus.
Rockstar unveiled GTA Online recently with a debut trailer and news that it will launch two weeks after the September 17 release of GTA V. For more details, read the full Grand Theft Auto Online interview. For our impressions of the online game, read our GTA Online first look preview.
Rockstar has confirmed a US and European GTA 5 release date of September 17 on Xbox 360 and PS3. The game will launch in Japan on October 10.

Final Fantasy XIV had a single but imposing task when it debuted in 2010: translate the atmosphere and lore of Final Fantasy to the MMORPG genre on PC. It’s a job that required an understanding of the MMOG – its intricate systems and reasons for its appeal – combined with a keen eye for what makes Square Enix’s rich fantasy worlds feel unique and, despite their canonical disparity, universal.Nine months, a critical drubbing and a revolted, revolting fanbase later, FFXIV had failed. The interfaces were cluttered and confusing, and much of the limited, charmless gameworld felt like placeholder. Combat, at odds with the characters’ dynamic movement, was sluggish and laborious. It felt unfinished, a work in progress undeserving of a brand name built on polish. And while the MMORPG is a genre frequently iterated upon, rebalanced and expanded through patches and content updates, Square Enix opted to do something entirely different: it shut it down. In the time since the blackout, it has remixed the development team – the resignation of its original director making way for company veteran Naoki Yoshida – and incubated the game behind closed doors in a bid to right the manifold wrongs of its first attempt.Opening the doors again for public beta testing must have been a nervous moment for the team, but news that FFXIV has had over a million sign-ups is encouraging. It’s also unsurprising: the game has become a legend of game development hell, known as a titanic misfire in a series for which failure – in terms of sales and popularity, if not always critical response – has never been an option. Many of FFXIV’s newest recruits are perhaps only there to see what all the fuss was about. The wealth of early sign-ups will also be down to Square Enix finally targeting two platforms, with PC and PS3 players sharing the same servers and in-game space (so troubled was the game’s original launch that a promised PS3 beta never saw the light of day). With the added challenge of delivering an experience that can cater to two different audiences, it would be hard to dispute the ambition and determination of this second attempt. On the evidence of our first few hours in the refreshed world of Eorzea, it looks like the new creative team has got the job done. Many of the major core complaints about FFXIV have been addressed. The world feels richer and more identifiably a part of the Final Fantasy mythology (complete with rentable Chocobos), the combat is quicker and more lively thanks to some stellar character models and animation (the engine has been massively overhauled), and the world map has been expanded to encompass a greater spread of locales packed with quests, characters and opportunity.

Valve is "thinking about" making Half-Life 3, the PC game that has so much coverage despite not been officially announced, according to a Half-Life 2 voice actor.
John Patrick Lowrie, who has voiced various characters and citizens in Half-Life 2, previously said on his blog, as reported by Neogaf: "As far as I know they are not developing HL3 now for several reasons, among them the mo-cap issue.
"One of the great things about HL2 is that all of the characters that you meet actually look at you when they talk to you no matter where you go or stand. With mo-cap you can’t do that, at least not yet. So that’s one of the things they’re working on."
However, Lowrie has since deleted some of his comments since the news broke, but he does still say that developer Valve is "thinking about" developing Half-Life 3.
"I had a conversation with a Valve employee recently about some of the challenges involved in making an HL3, so I know they’re thinking about it, but whether they can solve those challenges or will choose to solve them rather than concentrating on other projects, I just don’t know," he said.
"What I was trying to say before (and failed) is that whatever [Valve owner] Gabe Newell has to say about a project is the best info you’re going to get. He owns the company and knows what’s going on. Sorry that I gave the impression that I know what’s going on."
Half-Life is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed PC game series. The original arrived in 1998 and a sequel followed in 2004.
Half-Life 2: Episode One arrived in 2006 and Episode Two in 2007.

By selling 3 million copies in nine months, Guild Wars 2 has been crowned - by research company DFC Intelligence - the fastest-selling Western MMO of all time.No shh don't.
"After triangulating against multiple data sources, it's clear that Guild Wars 2 is the fastest-selling Western MMO of all time based on the first nine months of availability," commented DFC analyst David Cole."This puts Guild Wars 2 in an impressive position when they release in China, where we've seen similar franchises really take off."The numbers aren't new or even up to date -NCSoft announced 3 million Guild Wars 2 sales in January. NCSoft also hinted to me recently that another milestone was around the corner. Nevertheless, puffing one's chest out in front of Blizzard is not an opportunity to be missed.By comparison, World of Warcraft (which launched November 2004 in the US and February 2005 in Europe) took until June 2005 to reach two million subscribers, although by December 2005 it had rocketed to 5 million subscribers. The key word there being subscribers; Guild Wars 2 has no fee beyond buying the game - so are comparisions fair?A free Guild Wars 2 trial will be available next Friday for the whole weekend. You canregister a trial account on the Guild Wars 2 site.

August 18th, 2013, 01:23 Posted By: wraggster
Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson has released a new free browser-based score-attack zombie first-person shooter entitled Shambles. The only good cop is a dead cop (but not an undead cop).
It was originally made for 7DFPS, a game jam where creators were tasked with making a first-person shooter in seven days. Shambles tasks players with collecting as many yellow orbs dropped by dead zombies as they can. In an interesting balancing act, the only way to get guns and ammo is to obtain them from dead cops and the only way to get health is to pick up first-aid drops left by killed civilians. The latter won't hurt hurt you, but the police won't hesitate to shoot if you open fire on them. Also, cops and civilians can turn into zombies when bit.As such, it's often a mad scrambled for ammo as a cluster of cops is at least as deadly as a pack of the undead. Thankfully, you don't need to be the one to kill in order for people to drop stuff, so it's often best to take the path of least resistance and grab the goodies other leave in their wake. Of course, this means rushing into a hail of gunfire and the undead, but no one said surviving an apocalypse was going to be easy. This is a good thing, I think, because most rounds of Shambles won't last longer than a couple of minutes - until you instantly click the mouse to start again and try to beat your score, that is.Shambles is certainly rough around the edges with shoddy hit detection that makes most deaths feel a bit unfair, but it's a really inventive premise that's still fun in short bursts. It would be easy to imagine someone creating a more refined variant of this chaotic system, and part of me hopes they do.Give Shambles a shot at it's official site.

One man close to Valve has delivered a crushing blow to the millions of gamers patiently waiting on Half-Life 3.
Kotaku reports that John Patrick Lowrie, an actor who has starred in a number of Valve games and is married to the voice of GLaD0S Ellen McLain, has claimed that the game is not in active development.
"Sorry, I’m afraid that the opposite is true,” he said in response to the statement ‘Half-Life 3 confirmed’. “HL3 is not being worked on at this time as far as I know.
“Here is the biggest challenge with bringing out HL3: the big thing now with FPSs is motion capture, or mo-cap. One of the great things about HL2 is that all of the characters that you meet actually look at you when they talk to you no matter where you go or stand. With mo-cap you can’t do that, at least not yet.
“Once you film the actor doing something and capture that motion, that’s what the character is going to do. This works great in movies, but when you make something interactive it gets way less interactive with mo-cap. So that’s one of the things they’re working on.
“Right now they’re pretty full up with all the games they already have out there that they continue to support, plus the Steam stuff that they do, so, I don’t want to get people’s hopes up. I have no idea what they’re planning for the future. But I did have that conversation with some Valve folks, so I thought you might like to know what they’re thinking about.
“As far as I know they are not developing HL3 now for several reasons, among them the mo-cap issue. Sorry for any confusion. What they might decide in the future depends on lots of different factors. I hope they do, personally, but it has to make sense for them.”

If GTA V’s singleplayer campaign is the gateway drug, it seems Online is where players will get a shot of the really hard stuff. With GTA Online that feeling of dashing or driving around a living world is no longer illusory; promising a persistent and continually expanding world, it’ll be the reason to return to Los Santos long after GTA V’s final cutscene is played out.Plenty of what we see in the video released today is unsurprising. Player customisation is de rigueur for this sort of thing, as is the ability to form crews, take part in missions together and earn a reputation. Earning (and spending) money along the way, building a property empire and splurging cash on fast cars will all be enhanced, online parts of what Grand Theft Auto has always been. What’s truly new is the expansion of that world. In the past, Rockstar has spent years (and hundreds of millions of dollars) building a meticulously detailed game world, only to stop and move onto another. GTA Online will bring a sense of permanence to Los Santos, and every future expansion of its borders will give players a fresh reason to return over weeks, months and years.Limitations have hardly been an issue in Grand Theft Auto before, of course, but the places Rockstar has realised so wonderfully – Liberty City, Vice City and San Andreas – have always been finite, regardless of their scale. Even with the advent of GTA IV DLC, Rockstar never extended Liberty City’s borders, giving us new things to do within them instead. The promise of an ever-expanding space in GTA Online almost makes GTA V’s singleplayer campaign appear restrictive in comparison, however spectacular it turns out to be.

According to Wikipedia, the initial release of Debian happened 16 August 1993. In other words, it's Debian's birthday and you're all invited. 'During the Debian Birthday, the Debian conference will open its doors to anyone interested in finding out more about Debian and Free Software, inviting enthusiasts, users, and developers to a half day of talks relating to Free Software, the Debian Project, and the Debian operating system.' Over the years, Debian has been forked a number of times. Some of the more well-known forks are Ubuntu and Knoppix. The latest release of Debian pure blend was Debian 7.1 'Wheezy' on June 15th 2013."

Charitable sales platform is on mark to break records with 1m units sold
The Humble Bundle has launched a new major sale offering six games from EA, and it's already shaping up to break every sales record for the platform.
The charitable sales platform is best known for its DRM-free, multiplatform offerings of bundled indie games but lately the organizers have changed things up with packages from big-name developers and major publishers.
This latest package, The Humble Origin Bundle, includes Dead Space, Dead Space 3, Burnout Paradise, Crysis 2, Medal of Honor, and Mirror's Edge at a price set by the user.
Those who pay more than the current average of $4.79 get Battlefield 3 and The Sims 3 Starter Pack as a bonus.
It might seem like EA is crazy for offering eight games for under $5, but the company could gain a lot of users and publicity for its Digital Download service, Origin.

Microsoft will be removing the option to purchase PC games over Xbox.com on 22nd August, when an Xbox 360 update will remove the much derided Microsoft Points in lieu of using various local currencies.'If you strike down my Xbox.com marketplace, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.'
"We encourage you to spend your Microsoft Points balance prior to this change," said Microsoft on the Games for Windows Live Facebook Page. "Although you will not be able to purchase new games, you can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows Live client software as usual."This somewhat cryptic status update led many to believe that Microsoft would be shutting down its Games for Windows Live service, but this is not the case. When pressed for comment, Microsoft told us that it "continues to support the Games for Windows Live platform.""Although purchase functionality will be discontinued through this marketplace, the Games for Windows Live service will continue to operate as usual." Thus, it's just purchases through the website that are being shuttered. Not the service itself. This focus towards making all purchases over the Games for Windows Live client follows the news of former Valve director of business development and ex-Steam mastermind Jason Holtman joining Microsoft."I have joined Microsoft where I will be focusing on making Windows a great platform for gaming and interactive entertainment," he said in an interview with Gamesindustry International. "I think there is a lot of opportunity for Microsoft to deliver the games and entertainment customers want and to work with developers to make that happen, so I'm excited to be here."Holtman was largely credited for making Steam what it is by recruiting several publishers and developers to the platform. His recent hire at Microsoft could instigate a new focus on building the Games for Windows Live brand.Additionally, he spoke with EG news editor Wesley Yin-Poole last month at Develop about what it was like to work at Valve and how Gabe Newell wasn't the boss of him.

Rockstar may be emphasizing GTA Online as a 'separate entity' from GTA V, but there are no plans to sell it as one.
GTA Online - the online portion of GTA V - will be released on October 1, two weeks after GTA V's September 17 debut.
This, Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies told CVG in an exclusive interview, was to position the multiplayer offering as "a different entity, a separate thing".
But, unlike with games such as Metal Gear Online and Uncharted 3's multiplayer, Rockstar has no current intention of offering GTA Online separate from GTA V.
"We don't have any plans to sell GTA Online separately," a Rockstar rep told Polygon.
"It will come free with every copy of GTA V and doesn't require a code, online pass, or anything like that," they added.
GTA Online will be accessible through a fourth character on GTA 5's character Switch Wheel, which will become available after two weeks.
For more details. read the full Grand Theft Auto Online interview. For our impressions of the online game, read our GTA Online first look preview.
Rockstar has confirmed a US and European GTA 5 release date of September 17 on Xbox 360 and PS3. The game will launch in Japan on October 10.
