EA's Humble Origin Bundle has set a new record for the series of pay-what-you-want offerings, having accrued an astounding $8.7 million at the time of writing this. This figure is based on 1,791,762 bundles being sold at an average of $4.86.This strongly beats out the series previous record of $5.1 million with Humble Indie Bundle 5. Even more amazing, The Origin Humble Bundle still has five days to go until it ends on Wednesday, 28th August. Could it double the series' previous record? My hunch is that it's selling like hot cakes due to its inclusion of the only six month old Dead Space 3, or maybe it's latecomers on the Battlefield 3 bandwagon, or maybe it has something to do with the fact that EA is giving 100 per cent of its proceeds to charity, rather than letting buyers decide what money should go where (though they can still divvy up their donations among the five different charities). Either way, it's hard to argue with gaining 10 games for a few quid. The Humble Origin Bundle includes: Dead Space 3, the original Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, Crysis 2: Maximum Edition, Medal of Honor, and Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box. Pay over the average to also receive Battlefield 3, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Uprising, Populous, and the Sims 3, along with its two expansions in the Starter Pack.

Whether you're looking to print an Aston Martin or a birdhouse, Microsoft promises you'll be able to do it more easily with Windows 8.1. Redmond is looking to iron out the wrinkles currently associated with 3D printing -- like metadata loss during exporting and limited communication between apps and printers -- and make 3D printing more like 2D printing so it becomes "more seamless and ubiquitous." The software giant's plan for making it all happen? Defining a standardized feature set that represents what current and future printers can and will do, for one. Microsoft is also pushing for the use of its own 3D data format (3MF) that addresses the current's (STL) shortcomings -- most notably its lack of support for different colors and materials. October 17thprobably won't be the day 3D printing explodes, but these are certainly welcome steps toward that happening. Now, if Ballmer and co. could just bring the price of the printers themselves down then we'd really be in business.

Any number of executives could take Ballmer's place, including a few he unceremoniously kicked to the curb over the years. Whoever steps into that CEO role, however, faces a much greater challenge than if Ballmer had quietly resigned several years ago. Ballmer famously missed the boat on tablets and smartphones; Windows 8 isn't selling as well as Microsoft expected; and on Websites and blogs such as Mini-Microsoft (which had a brilliant posting about Ballmer's departure), employees complain bitterly about the company's much-maligned stack-ranking system, its layers of bureaucracy, and its inability to innovate. Had Ballmer left years ago, replaced by someone with the ability to more keenly anticipate markets, the company would probably be in much better shape to face its coming challenges. In its current form, Microsoft often feels like it's struggling in the wake of Amazon, Google, Apple, and Facebook."In an interview with ZDNet, Ballmer said his biggest regret as CEO was in how Windows Vista was developed. Opinions are divided on both the nature of his resignation and what it will mean for Microsoft. While the stock price is up, BusinessWeek and others suggest the purpose of the transition is to find somebody better able to anticipate future trends. That would certainly lead to more organizational changes within Microsoft, something employees suffered through just last month. Ben Kuchera at the Penny Arcade Report points out that this could mean Microsoft will try to re-enter markets it has abandoned. He asks the company to "stay the hell away from PC gaming.

Lead designer says it would make sense for Blizzard to go free-to-play at some point
Embracing casual game mechanics to increase accessibility has been key in maintaining the longevity of Blizzard’s flagship MMO World of Warcraft, says lead designer Tom Chilton.
Speaking to Polygon, Chilton said that without embracing the casual audience, the game “would have been in bad shape”.
Although subscription numbers have steadily fallen during the last couple of years, the MMO still holds some seven million players.
He also questioned long-term players of the game who said they would still be enjoying the title now even if alterations hadn’t been made to the original design when it was released in 2004. He said that this was not necessarily true, as audiences “always evolve”.
Chilton admitted however there had perhaps not been enough “new experiences for the hardcore audience”.

Industry charity to benefit from future sales of fundraising entertainment pack
Electronic Arts is giving a slice of the cash raised by its current Humble Bundle to UK games industry charity GamesAid.
Found at HumbleBundle.com, the pay-what-you-want download package includes some of the biggest games in EA Origin's catalogue, including Dead Space and Dead Space 3, Crysis 2, the 2010 Medal of Honor, Burnout Paradie: The Ultimate Box edition and the still excellent Mirror's Edge.
What's more, if you pay more than average donation – which at the time of writing stands at a paltry $4.85 – you also receive Battlefield 3, The Sims 3 Starter Pack, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Uprising and the original Populous.
There's only five days left to pick these titles up, and now you'll be doing your bit for charity.

Gaming vendor Razer has launched a brand new headset at Gamescom 2013: the Razer Kraken 7.1 Surround Sound USB Gaming Headset.
Built off the same platform as the analog Razer Kraken Pro headset, the Kraken 7.1 USB gaming headset features 7.1 virtual surround sound and an enhanced digital microphone.
The headset simulates a 360-degree surround sound experience "usually achievable only by incorporating more than one positional speaker driver in each ear cup". It uses Razer´s Synapse 2.0 unified configuration software, allowing gamers to tweak each surround sound channel, boost bass levels and balance incoming voice audio.
The digital microphone promises "crystal-clear" voice chat with better frequency response, sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio than a standard analog microphone. It also has a mic mute button and an LED indicator that shows when the mic is active.
The Razer Kraken 7.1 has 40mm neodymium magnet drivers and a retractable microphone hidden in the left ear cup when not in use.
It's priced at $99.99 in the US and €99.99 in Europe, and is available now.
“As we continue to develop and build on our software front, we´re able to add more and more capabilities to our products," said Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder, CEO and creative director. “With its superior software capabilities, unrivaled sound quality and comfort, the Razer Kraken 7.1 is the definitive USB surround sound headset for PC gaming."

Microsoft has today announced that CEO Steve Ballmer will retire from his position within a year.
The company’s board has already appointed a special committee to find a replacement CEO.
"We need a CEO who will be here longer term for this new direction," said Ballmer.
Bill Gates is one of the members of the committee, which will work with leading executive recruiting firm Heidrick & Struggles International to consider both external and internal candidates.
“As a member of the succession planning committee, I’ll work closely with the other members of the board to identify a great new CEO,” said Gates. “We’re fortunate to have Steve in his role until the new CEO assumes these duties.”
Ballmer has been CEO of Microsoft since January 2000, taking over the position from Bill Gates.

The Chrome 30 beta has one of the longer lists of new features we've seen from the browser in quite some time. One of the most immediately visible will be a new option to search by image when you right-click or long-press on one. It'll use your default search provider to perform the task, but chances are you'll be using Google's own top-notch photo-mining service. The Android edition is also revamping its various gestures to make them easier to perform and lessen the chance of accidentally triggering them. Now all the gestures are performed in the top tool bar: swipe left or right to switch tabs, down from the middle to initiate the tab selector or down from the upper right-hand corner to open the menu.
As if that wasn't enough, the back-end tech is getting a slew of new features on both the desktop and mobile sides. The Android version of the Chrome beta now supports WebGL, the MediaSource API and DeviceMotion, for making use of the accelerometer in the browser. MediaSource is particularly useful for generating dynamic streams of content that can adjust bit-rates on the fly, based on the quality of the connection. On the desktop, a load of new APIs have been added to the Chrome App framework, including support for in-app payments and downloads. WebRTC and speech recognition have also received improvements across all platforms. You can find out more details at the source and download the new Chrome beta at the more coverage links below.

Software developers and PC vendors have frequently catered to reluctant Windows 8 buyers with Start menu replicas, and that trend doesn't appear to be slowing down. Lenovo has just reached a deal that will bundle SweetLabs' Pokki suite with its Windows 8 PCs, including a Start menu replacement, an app store and a game arcade. The two companies haven't said which particular systems will first ship with Pokki, although the deal starts with consumer-focused devices and will spread to include multiple PCs across the IdeaCentre, IdeaPad and ThinkPad lines. The SweetLabs agreement should cheer those who want the old Windows experience or an alternative software store. The bundle may prove bittersweet for Microsoft, however -- it usually wants Windows PC buyers to embrace the future.

Iconic PC franchise could abandon boxed releases to focus on free-to-play.
Discussing this year's entry in the Command & Conquer series, Developer Victory Games stated it would favour the free-to-play business model over boxed releases for the franchise moving forward.
"I think maybe the days of a boxed Command & Conquer release are probably over," Victory general manager Jon Van Caneghem told Videogamer.
He went on to highlight the decision to skip retail as one that would hopefully give the franchise a wider global reach.
"We have fans in every country around the world: Eastern Europe, China, you name it... We want to be able to bring this game to everyone, and I think not going the retail route was the way that we could expand our audience to a bigger audience," added Van Caneghe.
Victory Games says it wants to target the Asian market, which it believes to be one of the biggest markets for the game. And with the lack of a retail market in the country, free-to-play is the correct business model.
The developer will support its latest addition to the Command & Conquer series with a 'live service' platform, which will see new content such as factions and missions added on-the-fly.
Victory believes this platform will extend the game's life, and has been designed to support the title for the next ten years.

Wants to stamp out marketing and access to adult content - and boost usage figures.
Kids continue to mix with technology, whether that's at school or at home, which is why Apple recently banned behavioural advertising from children's apps on iOS 7.
Microsoft has now launched search engine Bing for Schools, which comes with ad-free searching in a bid to clamp down on youngsters being fed commercials – and gain widespread adoption ahead of Google.
The initial launch is Stateside and Bing claims to be the first search engine of its kind to offer the solution, while also enhancing privacy control and blocking adult content.
Bing for Schools also offers learning features to help with study, as 94 per cent of teachers reckon students will use search engines for coursework.
A number of schools in LA, Atlanta, Fresno and Detroit are already signed up to the scheme.
As an added sweetener, Microsoft is encouraging people to use Bing via mobile or at home for the chance to generate Bing Reward points for a school of their choice, which will result in schools being sent a Microsoft Surface RT tablet when enough credits have been earned.
Ronald S. Chandler, chief information officer, Los Angeles Unified School District, said: "In the Los Angeles Unified School District, we strive to stay on top of new and innovative ways to leverage technology to promote high-quality teaching and learning.
"Collaborating with community partners like Microsoft is an essential part of bringing the best possible educational experience we can to our students. I look forward to supporting the Bing for Schools program, which is designed to promote digital literacy by helping to put new devices into the hands of students, teach them how to use them well, and facilitating learning in a safe and supportive environment."
In other news, Aurasma is currently working on introducing augmented reality lessons to US schools.

The GTA series has been about the most popular video gaming franchise in history. The original Grand Theft Auto started out on the PC and PSOne in 1997, and has since spawned many spin offs and sequels. All of which feature to some extent car jacking, sandbox (or the freedom to run around the game world as you please), and guns. Lots of guns.
GTA 5 release date
GTA 5 is set for release on September 17th on PS3 and Xbox 360.
It was initially widely expected that the PC version would come significantly later, perhaps early 2014. However Nvidia recently stated in an earnings call that Grand Theft Auto V will be released for PC this autumn (fall for American readers).
There is no word as yet as to whether GTA 5 will be available for PS4 and Xbox One.
GTA 5 multiplayer
Rockstar has released a video detailing a multiplayer version of GTA called Grand Theft Auto Online.
Technically this is a standalone game, but it will be given away with GTA 5. It will be available on its own on October 1st.

DayZ creator Dean Hall told us today at Gamescom that the standalone version of the hit Arma 2 zombie mod, originally expected last year, doesn't have a release window anymore, but he did explain the delay.
"The awkward thing is the only thing we're waiting on is the core network architecture. That's the kind of thing only a few people can work on. It's very specialized," Hall said. "It's like, you can't throw more pilots at a plane. You put a thousand pilots in a plane it's not going to fly any faster."
Hall said that while the network architecture is being developed, other work is proceeding with the artists, animators and designers. And once the network architecture is completed to the satisfaction of the brutal multiplayer survival game: "Bam, it's go time."

Developer avoids free-to-play treatment on upcoming MMO
ZeniMax Online Studios is sticking with the traditional subscription business model for its upcoming MMO, The Elder Scrolls Online.
Speaking to Gamestar, ZeniMax Online GM Matt Firor said in order to create a game with hundreds of hours of gameplay, the studio had decided to charge a monthly fee rather than go down the free-to-play route.
He claimed that if the developer had made the title F2P, it would have been forced to make sacrifices and changes to the game that it wasn’t willing to make.
“It's important to state that our decision to go with subscriptions is not a referendum on online game revenue models,” said Firor.
“F2P, B2P, etc. are valid, proven business models - but subscription is the one that fits ESO the best, given our commitment to freedom of gameplay, quality and long-term content delivery. Plus, players will appreciate not having to worry about being "monetised" in the middle of playing the game, which is definitely a problem that is cropping up more and more in online gaming these days.

League of Legends (LoL) - the most popular PC game with an average 12 million daily players globally - has been hacked in the US.
Developer Riot Games said that a portion of its North American account information was "recently compromised", including usernames, email addresses, encrypted passwords, as well as some first and last names of users.
Riot says that League of Legends players with easily guessable passwords are vulnerable to account theft, and so is requiring its US users to come up with new, stronger passwords.
It is also investigating whether some 120,000 transaction records (containing encrypted credit card numbers) have been accessed or not. The payment system for these hasn't been used since July 2011.
League of Legends is now working on new security features including email verification and two-factor authentication - where changes to an account email or password will require verification via email or text message.
"The security of your information is critically important to us, so we’re really sorry to share that a portion of our North American account information was recently compromised," said Riot Games' co-founders Marc Merrill and Brandon Beck in a joint statement.
"We are taking appropriate action to notify and safeguard affected players. Our investigation is ongoing and we will take all necessary steps to protect players.
"We’re sincerely sorry about this situation. We apologise for the inconvenience and will continue to focus on account security going forward."
League of Legends is a free-to-play online PC MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game. It has over half a million peak concurrent daily players on its EU West server alone.

Rome 2 has become the most pre-ordered title in the Total War series to date.
Publisher Sega has revealed that pre-sales of the title have already grown to six times of that achieved by the series’ 2011 predecessor Total War: Shogun 2.
“Our expectations for Total War: Rome II are extremely high. It is already our fastest pre-ordered Total War game of all time,” said Sega product manager Sam Sadeghi.
He added: “Creative Assembly is all hands on deck finishing up Total War: Rome II and making it the best game it can be. We are working hard on driving awareness and marketing the product. We hope retail can see this and get behind the product to help make it a success sales-wise.”
Sega recently detailed its Total War: Rome 2 marketing campaign, revealing a host of activity to push pre-orders.

Reaper of Souls, the expansion to the fastest-selling PC game of all time – Diablo 3 – has been announced at Gamescom.
Opening up a dark and terrifying new chapter in the franchise, Reaper of Souls sees Malthael return as the Angel of Death as he seizes the Black Soulstone, which contains the essence of the Prime evil. Players must track down Malthael to stop him before he unleashes irreversible havoc on the world.
“From the beginning, Diablo has always been about the struggle between good and evil, and Reaper of Souls explores the darker notes of that conflict,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment.
Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls is playable at Gamescom. Blizzard had revealed that more details about the expansion will also be unveiled at Blizzcon.
Those lucky enough to get hands-on with Reaper of Souls will see the key enhancements to the core gameplay in action, with a new act and character class to play about with as well as tons of new loot.

Today at a Gamescom press conference, Blizzard announced the "Reaper of Souls" expansion pack for Diablo 3. Game Director Josh Mosquiera took the stage to reveal a new class, the Crusader, a burly and heavily armored character. Reaper of Souls will feature a new act, a higher level cap, new endgame options and, of course, more loot.
Reaper of Souls centers around Malthael, the angel of death, who has seized control of the black soulstone, which houses the soul of Diablo himself. Blizzard promises a "darker" game this time a round, and Malthael is certainly dark, able to siphon souls from the people of Sanctuary, even allowing him to turn citizens into his minions. Of course, Reaper of Souls will include new monsters, including fallen angels.
