During a presentation at LinuxCon 2013, Gabe Newell teased that there will be some hardware news next week.
Newell spoke about Linux as a platform that will drive PC gaming where closed systems fail.
"Next week we're going to be rolling out more information about how we get there and what are the hardware opportunities that we see for bringing Linux into the living room, and potentially pointing further down the road to how we get it even more unified with mobile," he said.
This comment seems to be strongly hinting at Valve’s Steam Box.
Newell told those attending the presentation that there are now 198 Steam games running on Linux and the platform is ‘the future of gaming’.
He also revealed that Valve is co-developing a Linux debugger to help with future software developments.

A new patch has been issued in Payday 2. The highlight of this latest update is a retooled economy system: Now players will receive a smaller amount for completing the basic parameters of a mission, but be greatly rewarded for any loot or additional merchandise they secure during the mission. Overkill hopes this will force players to fight their own greed on every map.
Outside of the restructured payouts, you can now choose whether you want XP, cash or some mixture of both when taking on a job through Crime.net, the game's mission delivery system. Another heist has also been added, as have more masks. Enemy and teammate behavior has been improved and various weapons have been tweaked.

Valve co-founder and managing director Gabe Newell says in no uncertain terms what the brain trust at Valve thinks: When it comes to actual users, 'Linux is currently insignificant by any metric' (by any metric that matters to game companies, at least, like number of players, minutes played, and — all important — revenue). On these fronts, Linux players are 'typically under 1 percent' of what game companies see. But that's not the upshot. The takeaway is just about the opposite, says Newell: 'The future of gaming is on Linux.' Newell expounded on the present and future of games on Linux in a keynote address at LinuxCon North America, which kicked off today in New Orleans. He described ways Valve is working to improve the landscape for games on Linux, and hinted at new hardware developments from the company in the near future

Steam Box dreamers take note, our buddies at Engadget recently went hands on with Gigabyte's Brix gaming PC. Gigabyte's Brix line, if you haven't heard, crams a whole PC into a case roughly the size of a nice tiramisu (i.e. a cube about 4.5 inches wide). The diminutive machine packs Intel's new Haswell processor and, more importantly, Iris Pro integrated graphics. Connectivity includes 4 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, Ethernet, Bluetooth 4.0, built-in WiFi and a headphone jack.
Engadget tried out Grid 2, which played smoothly in 1080p. The lil' 'puter isn't going to outperform a system with a dedicated GPU, but it sounds impressive nonetheless. The PC has no release date just yet, but it's expected to sell for $500. That comes with a hefty caveat, however: you'll have to provide your own RAM, 2.5-inch hard drive and operating system.

About a year after the CompactFlash Association announced the CFast 2.0 draft spec, SanDisk has revealed its new Extreme Pro CFast 2.0 memory card. The first of its kind, SanDisk says read speeds of up to 450MB/s and write speeds of up to 350MB/s make it the world's fastest memory card, period. Speed isn't the only improvement either, as the cards claim a tougher, pinless design and even unique serial numbers that owners can register with customer support. For now however, its use is going to be quite limited. The only camera ready for it at launch is the just-announced Arri Amira, although the Arri XT and Classic (with the XR module) cameras can also use it with an adapter. For those still using traditional CompactFlash storage for their 4K shooting the company is stretching the limits there too, with a new 256GB card that it says has the highest capacity ever. That extra storage will cost you however, with a price of $1,809 for the new 256GB version. There's no word on a price for the CFast 2.0 cards or their USB 3.0-equipped reader, but pro videographers in the US and Europe should be able to find them soon at specialty shops and Arri-authorized locations.

Indie studio The Fullbright Company has announced its debut effort Gone Home has sold 50,000 copies prior to the conclusion of its launch month.
Posting on Fullbright’s website, co-founder Steve Gaynor revealed the milestone – along with news that the game has been selected as a finalist for upcoming indie game festivals Fantastic Arcade in Austin, TX and IndieCade in Culver City, CA.
"We're now almost a month out since launching on August 15, and we hope people will find it encouraging to know that, along with the positive critical response we are continually grateful for and humbled by, we are also doing alright as far as sales numbers go!" Fullbright co-founder Steve Gaynor wrote on the company's website.
While there’s been no mention of what the studio will do now that they’ve released their first title (so far, exclusively for PC, Mac and Linux), Gaynor did tease that exciting news from the company is on the way.
“Thanks again to everybody that has played the game, shared their thoughts, and just supported us in general. Look forward to more exciting news soon!”
Gaynor – along with the other members of Fullbright – previously helped develop the BioShock series in various capacities before going indie to work on smaller, more personal player-driven games.

Kirk Skaugen, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the PC Client Group at Intel, while on stage, at IDF this week snuck in some additional information about Broadwell, the 14nm follow up to Haswell that was mentioned during Brian Krzanich's opening day keynote. In a quick demo, Kirk showed a couple of systems running the Cinebench multi-threaded benchmark side-by-side. One of the systems featured a Haswell-Y processor, the other a Broadwell-Y. The benchmark results weren't revealed, but during the Cinebench run, power was being monitored on both systems and itshowed the Broadwell-Y rig consuming roughly 30% less power than Haswell-Y and running fully loaded at under 5 watts. Without knowing clocks and performance levels, we can't draw many conclusion from the power numbers shown, but they do hint at Broadwell-Y's relative health, even at this early stage of the game.

Sky News reports that the Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) has launched an orbital telescope on a new generation rocket from the Uchinoura Space Centre in Kagoshima, in southwestern Japan. The Epsilon rocket uses an onboard AI for autonomous launch checks by the rocket itself (). A product of renewed focus on reducing costs, the new vehicle required two laptops and a launch team of eight, compared to the 150 people needed to launch the previous platform, the M-5. Because of the reduced launch team and ease of construction, production and launch costs of the Epsilon are roughly half that of the M-5. The payload, a SPRINT-A telescope, is designed for planetary observation."

Microsoft's new recycle-for-reward initiative doesn't target one of its own devices -- instead, it focuses on another company's popular gadget: Apple's iPad. The US trade-in program offers at least $200 in exchange for a "gently used" iPad 2, 3 or 4. You can probably get more than $200 in other places, especially for the newer slates, and you can even get cash instead of the Microsoft Store gift cards Redmond's giving out. However, outgoing CEO Ballmer and Co. are hoping you'll find the project helpful if you've been wanting to buy their products anyway -- particularly the Surface tablets, as evidenced by their prominent placement on the program's page. Before you surrender old iPads to give Surface a chance, know that the trade-in scheme will run until October 27th, which gives you time to see Microsoft's next attempt.

Sports Interactive has confirmed the PC, Mac and Linux release date for Football Manager 2014.
The game will be released on Thursday October 31st.
“I get so many requests for the release date on Twitter, but we’ll only ever announce a date when we’re sure we’re going to hit it,” Sports Interactive Studio Director Miles Jacobson stated.
“We’re now at that point, so I’m delighted to announce the release date of October 31st and also announce loads more retailers who will be offering people who pre-order the chance to play the beta version of the game two weeks ahead of Football Manager 2014’s official release date.”

“The next-generation consoles are a crucial injection of life into our market. A console was never and ultimately never will be a direct competitor to our own range of pre-built, performance gaming PCs. The advent of this new era in console gaming will see improvements in technology and software development accelerate, and PC gaming will benefit. A console complements a PC gamer’s arsenal of hardware.
"Of course we will be stocking the new consoles. Xbox One and PS4 look great and have the performance to match. Whilst our core business revolves around PC hardware, we are aware that a lot of our customers want to be able to add their hardware to one basket. We are excited to see which console comes out on top; since launch our pre-orders have been 50/50 split.”
Steve Ling, Overclockers UK
“GHI maintains its core focus as being a PC specialist. Some years ago we did look into whether we should expand into the console market but decided it wasn’t for us, as we believed the market was already saturated and would involve a sizeable investment to break into and sustain a loyal customer base. The industry no longer requires a ‘specialist retailer’ of console games; this is evident in how the PC games market has evolved over the years into an almost entirely digital download arena.
"However, the new PS4 and Xbox One will find their way onto our shelves this Christmas as the demand will be there. But they will ultimately be Christmas-only lines as we seek to capitalise on picking up sales from other retailers who are out of stock. Parents will pay whatever they can to make their kids happy this Christmas.”
Gavin Holder, GHI Computers
“Gaming is at the heart of Utopia. Our store has everything a gamer would need from headsets to mouse mats and we even stock Gunnar Optiks gaming glasses. We’ve also been heavily involved in the launch of Exist2Game, the new gaming event in the UK. This event will be a great way to remind our customers that we’re the place to come for PC gaming.
"As for the new consoles, they will definitely help our business. There is always a buzz in the air when new consoles are released and people get excited for gaming and even on a different platform; that can only be a good thing, right? I’m not worried that this will somehow detract from our gaming desktop and laptop sales.”
Craig Hume, Utopia Computers

Windows Phone's future may involve more than just a few more home screen tiles. Elaborating on rumors from the summer, ZDNet claims that the next version of Windows Phone (possibly 8.1) will focus on Cortana, a personal assistant that goes beyond the likes of Google Now or Siri. The Halo-inspired component is reportedly more of a shell than an app, and would integrate the OS with Microsoft services like Bing. Ultimately, Cortana would find its way into versions of Windows and the Xbox One's Dashboard.
The assistant might not be the only major feature in 8.1. Windows-Phone.pl has postedwhat it says are photos of the OS running on a smartphone. They suggest that the previously leaked notification center would reside in a Live Tile, and that users could group-select tiles like they can with Windows 8.1. There's no guarantees that the images or the Cortana rumor are authentic, although they're consistent with Microsoft's publicly stated desires for both a notification center and a "service-enabled shell." We may not get any official details for a while, however -- if real, Windows Phone 8.1 might not ship until sometime in early 2014.

Total War: Rome II would have been the UK’s real No.1 last week, if we counted digital sales, MCV can reveal.
The strategy game was No.2 in the UK retail charts with over 32,000 units sold, narrowly missing out on the No.1 spot by just 200 copies.
Yet if you factor in UK digital sales of 73,000, and the game would not only have comfortably been top of the charts, but it would have been one of the biggest single format launches of the year, with 105,00 games sold.
This is further evidence of the growing importance of including digital data in the weekly charts.
Despite the popularity of Total War as a digital download, Sega’s digital VP John Clark insists retail has nothing to fear.
He told MCV that the launch sales of Rome II at retail were 4,000 higher than they were for the original title.
“It’s an incredible number and the biggest, most significant number we’ve seen,” said Clark.
“Based on other stats that we’re looking at it also shows that this isn’t a digital shift – we’re now adding consumers.”

One analyst has speculated that the time may be nearing for Activision Blizzard’s World of Warcraft to make the jump to free-to-play.
A report by Superdata Research, as spotted by CVG, claims that the MMO has experienced a drop in revenues of 54 per cent in the last seven months. That’s based on a supposed April revenue of $93m – down from the $204m recorded seven months previous.
“In a market where players are increasingly used to – and spending money on – in-game items, the lack of microtransactions beyond pets and mounts looks like it’s starting to hurt,” the report reads.
“What we generally see after a switch to free-to-play is an influx of new players and a spike in revenues, which, if the cards are played right, can be sustained.”
However, the firm does warn that for a game that has been so successful for so long using subscriptions a move to F2P might prove more problematic than it would for other titles.
“To switch entirely to F2P is currently too much of a jolt for WoW, and doesn’t make sense with the current metrics,” it added. “For example, in order to have sustained the US revenues the game saw in 2011, it would have had to convert 53% of the total free-to-play audience in the US at the time.
“However, there are now more F2P gamers in the country – and worldwide –so it’s becoming easier to capture this audience. But there’s also more competition.
“With a dedicated player base and relatively stable MAUs, WoW would need a convergence of factors to make the switch beneficial. It looks like those factors are starting to stack up, but haven’t hit critical mass.”
