What's the definition of insanity? Trying the same thing several times and expecting a different outcome. While we wouldn't suggest that Microsoft's finest minds are in need of urgent medical care, it does seem as if the company's executives have failed to heed the lessons doled out this summer. After all, it was only a few months ago that Microsoft had to admit that very few Surface RT tablets had been sold, and booked a$900 million loss on inventory that remains rotting in warehouses.
At today's launch of Microsoft's second Windows RT-running slate, Surface chief Panos Panay opened his remarks by saying that the "Surface 2 is not subtle, but is a revamp. It is not the simple changes that everybody wants, but it's the changes people need." Unfortunately, the changes that he then went on to describe involved making the device thinner, faster and giving it a full-HD display -- criticisms that few had leveled at the first generation of the hardware. No, the problems that every critic had were the limitations of the Surface's operating system: Windows RT. Not that you'd know it from today's event. In fact, Microsoft went out of its way to downplay the fact that theSurface 2 runs RT, mentioning the ambitious Windows-on-ARM project only three times in an hour. But why was the star of the show reduced to such a bit-part role?

The Surface RT's full-fledged Pro counterpart just got an update. Today, Microsoft unveiled the follow-up to that x86 / Windows 8-compatible tablet: the Surface Pro 2and it still comes with a stylus. According to Microsoft's claims, this new tablet boasts 50 percent more color accuracy, better graphics performance, an improved speaker setup and some speed gains -- it's purportedly 20 percent faster than the original.
For those wondering, the Pro 2's display has been kept consistent with the original, which means it remains a 10.6-inch 1080p panel, and it's even been ported to the new Surface 2. Battery life has gotten a significant 75 percent boost as well thanks to the 1.6GHz Core i5 Haswell processor inside and now runs much quieter. The Surface Pro 2 can also be paired with Microsoft's new Power Cover to give the tablet 2.5x its standalone battery life or the Type Cover 2, which is now 1mm thinner and backlit.
The kickstand has also been revised for the refresh, as it's now a two-stage affair, addressing the issues many users had with the old Pro's awkward angle. As for ports, Microsoft says the Surface Pro 2 is loaded up with support for three USB 2.0, one USB 3.0, mini DisplayPort, Ethernet, audio in/out and, of course, charging. The Surface Pro 2, when docked, can output up to a 3,840 x 2,160 resolution on an external display and is capable of editing 6K video, backing up the company's repeated assertion that this tablet is actually a "full power PC."
Pre-orders for both of Microsoft's next-gen Surface tablets go live tomorrow, the 24th, at 8AM EST with units set to ship to 21 markets on October 22nd. Pricing for the base Surface Pro 2 (i.e., 64GB / 4GB RAM) starts at $899 (the same as the original Pro), although that retail sticker shock will climb depending on the model -- it'll be available in configurations of up to 512GB / 8GB RAM.

Steam for Linux becomes Linux for Steam in first of three major announcements
Valve has unveiled a new Linux-based operating system built around its popular Steam digital distribution platform.
The company has been talking up Linux as the future of PC gaming, and has promised a line of hardware that will make it easier for users to get their home computers into the living room.
Valve has already released Steam Big Picture Mode, which makes the Steam UI functional on a television, and has created a version of its sales platform for Linux.
Steam OS is the first of three announcements that will show off the work Valve has been doing as part of its wider plans to make the PC a truly open, gamer-focused platform.
“As we’ve been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we’ve come to the conclusion that the environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself,” reads the announcement.
“SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen. It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.”
Steam OS promises the ability to stream games directly to a user's TV, not just from the host machine, but from other computers connected to the same network.
Apparently Newell hasn't been fooling around when he talked about the idea of the PC driving every device in the home; this suggests a future where any game, app, or software on any computer with Steam loaded could be streamed – what amounts to a home cloud.
The company messaging for the product places a premium on openness, advertising the ability for consumers to modify any part of the hardware or software.
“With SteamOS, 'openness' means that the hardware industry can iterate in the living room at a much faster pace than they’ve been able to,” said Valve”
“Content creators can connect directly to their customers. Users can alter or replace any part of the software or hardware they want. Gamers are empowered to join in the creation of the games they love.”
Linux has long been sneered at by professional game developers for its lack of a unified API to communicate with hardware, among other issues, so the news that a games company has rolled out its own distribution is sure to turn some heads.
Steam OS also takes advantage of the newly announced family sharing options, so different users can determine what games are available to others on the account, so parents don't have to worry about their kids getting access to the 'mature' games they play.
The next news from Valve is due at 1pm EST Wednesday.

September 23rd, 2013, 20:48 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has unveiled the successor to its Surface tablet - the Surface 2 - at an event in New York, and has announced the device's price and release date.
The improved tablet will come in two models – the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2 – and will be available to pre-order from tomorrow (September 24th), preceeding an October 22nd release date.
The Surface 2 starts at £359 and comes with either 32GB or 64GB of storage. The Pro 2 starts at £719 and comes with either 64, 128, 256 or 512GB of storage. The 256GB model also has 4GB of RAM and the 512GB model comes with 8GB of RAM.
The Surface 2 will run on Windows RT 8.1, with the Pro 2 on Windows 8.1 Pro. Both will feature upgrades to the tablet’s internal components, with the Surface’s Touch Cover also receiving an enhanced refresh.
The Surface 2 is powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 processor, which is claimed to extend the battery life to 10 hours when playing video.
The 10.6-inch ClearType screen can display in up to 1080p, or Full HD, and the device now has a USB 3.0 port for faster connections.
The cameras on the tablet have also been improved, with the front camera now 3.5-megapixels and the rear camera five-megapixels, which means both can capture 1080p video.
The entire device is thinner and lighter than the original Surface.
Windows RT 8.1, which is installed on the Surface 2, includes improvements over Windows 8, which shipped on the first iteration of the Surface, and the Surface 2 also includes Microsoft Office 2013 RT.
The Surface Pro 2 is billed by Microsoft as a “laptop replacement, capable of running virtually all your Windows software including the full Microsoft Office suite, as well as apps from the Windows Store”.
The Pro 2 is powered by an Intel Core i5 processor, giving 60 per cent more battery life than the first Surface Pro.
Purchasers of either the Surface 2 or Pro 2 will receive free Skype calling to landlines for a year, unlimited Skype Wi-Fi for a year and 200GB of free SkyDrive storage for two years.
New accessories for the Surface 2 and Pro 2 were announced alongside the new tablets, including an improved Touch Cover, the Touch Cover 2, which at 2.75mm is thinner than the first-generation Touch Cover. The Touch Cover 2 has better sensors and accuracy than the Touch Cover, and will be available for pre-order alongside the Surface 2 and Pro 2, at an RRP of £99.99.
Other accessories include the £109.99 Type Cover 2, the battery-boosting Power Cover which will be released in 2014 and the £164.99 Docking Station for Surface Pro, which connects to an external monitor and other PC peripherals and arrives in 2014.
Additionally, a £44.99 car charger with USB is also due for release in 2014, while the Arc Touch Mouse Surface Edition, which connects via Bluetooth 3.0, can be pre-ordered in the US and Canada on September 24th and comes with a £59.99 price tag.

PC download service Steam will make three announcements in its bid to wrestle control of the living room from PS4 and Xbox One.Steam launched 'Big Picture' mode last year, which was a user-interface that made Steam games ideal for play on televisions and controllers. It worked but isn't a particularly accessible solution. But next week - starting with the first on Monday – Steam-owner Valve will make three further announcements designed to make the service more accessible in the living room. Putting it in a stronger position to combat big next-gen consoles: PS4 and Xbox One.For those fans craving for news on Half-Life 3, or Left4Dead 3 or Portal 3 or whatever the next game from Valve will be, I wouldn't necessarily get your hopes up. The three announcements are specifically around this living room concept.Unless, of course, this is the long-awaited Steam Box announcement. And Half-Life 3 is its exclusive blockbuster launch title. Now there's a thought. We'll know more once the timer on this site falls down to zero.http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/steam...monday/0121460

A new page has appeared over at Steam with this slightly cryptic text, a countdown, and an image of a console controller. 'Last year, we shipped a software feature called Big Picture, a user-interface tailored for televisions and gamepads. This year we've been working on even more ways to connect the dots for customers who want Steam in the living-room. Soon, we'll be adding you to our design process, so that you can help us shape the future of Steam.' It appears Gabe Newell wants to throw his hat in the console ring now with the Xbox One and PS4 about to be released. The countdown to the announcement is targeted at Monday.

SimCity is heading to the future with the "Cities of Tomorrow" expansion pack, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for November 12. Taking place 50 years in the future, new technologies allow Sims to travel by MagLev trains, use fusion reactors and "tidal wave generators." Surfs up, man! What do you mean that's not what tidal wave generator means? Well, maybe you should figure out a better word!
There's also the classic future quandary of creating clean technology or encouraging giant corporations to strip the planet of resources. Nope, wait, that's a current problem. The game will also get around the issue of smaller lot sizes by allowing players to build up in "multi-zone MegaTowers that extend high into the sky." The expansion is priced at $30.

Valve has released a second community-made map pack for Counter Strike: Global Offensive.
Titled 'Operation Bravo', the pack contains eight maps created by community mods; seven new maps and one (Seaside) returning from asimilar previous pack, 'Operation Payback'.
All of the maps were created by game mods and voted for by the community. For a fee of $5.99, you unlock the maps for play on official servers in Causal, Deathmatch and Competitive modes.
You also gain access to 15 map-themed weapon finishes. As Valve notes, you are also able to invite friends to Operation Bravo matches even if they haven't purchased the pack.
More details are on the official site.
In August Valve released the The Arms Deal Update for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, opening a trading service within the game.
The new content "allows players for the first time to collect, buy, sell and trade decorated weapons that they can equip in-game."

Last month we saw the inspired week-long game jam, 7DFPS, which tasked developers with creating a first-person shooter in seven days. With this tiny timeline, developers had to get creative to produce something that felt like more than a mere Doom clone. Chris Donlanwrote about some of its highlights, while I covered Notch's contribution to the project, but now one of its best entries, Superhot, has made waves with its upcoming spruced up commercial release getting accepted on Steam Greenlight in record time."Thanks to your AMAZING support we passed Steam Greenlight in mere five days!," said Polish developer Blue Brick in its announcement. "We've checked it - Superhot is the fastest game ever to get greenlit."Why's it all-of-a-sudden so popular you ask? Because it's brilliant. The idea is that time only moves when you do. It's a bit like that one world in Braid then, only you can't make time move backwards. Instead, you need to meticulously line up your shots then carefully walk around in such a way that you won't collide with a bullet. It sounds easy, and indeed the first level or two are, but the challenge ramps up quickly as guns can only hold a few bullets and you die in one hit. What begins as a John-Woo-meets-Zack-Morris power fantasy swiftly evolves into a mesmerising spacial puzzler featuring perhaps the most fluid mix of real-time and turn-based combat I've encountered.

The rest of the industry may have turned its back on Windows RT, but it looks as if Microsoft isn't prepared to ditch the Windows-on-ARM dream just yet. During an analyst call, Terry Myerson, Microsoft's recently crowned software chief, seemed to describe RT as a first attempt, which will be followed up by further devices in the future:"Windows RT was our first ARM tablet(sic). And as phones extend into tablets, expect us to see many more ARM tablets, Windows ARM tablets in the future."
Myerson's choice of words, and in particular his reference to phones that "extend into tablets," suggests that Microsoft could be looking to bridge the divide between its smartphone and tablet divisions, and perhaps give Windows Phone a much more prominent role than the much-maligned Windows RT. Indeed, using Windows Phone as a tablet OS, or merging WP and RT, would help Microsoft to unify its various platforms and apps -- something it has talked about in the past and that is actually a key focus of Myserson's work:"... we really should have one silicon interface for all of our devices. We should have one set of developer APIs on all of our devices. And all of the apps we bring to end users should be available on all of our devices."
So, who knows, perhaps Windows Phone and RT have a common future? In which case, the idea of Nokia taking charge of this unified drive -- building phones and tabletson the same platform -- would make a lot of sense.

Xbox Live zombie hit State of Decay is scheduled to arrive on PC for the first time today.
The game, which set Xbox Live alight back in June, is due to arrive on Valve’s Steam portal today (Friday September 20th) priced at $20. It will be an Early Access version, however, meaning effectively what will be offered is a work in progress version.
“Those willing to throw in with us at Undead Labs and your fellow early adopters will automatically get the final version, completely free, with no need to restart, when we officially launch later this year,” a statement from developer Undead Labs confirmed.
“It will not be perfect. It may still have crashes. What it won’t have is a keyboard and mouse interface… not at first. Why not? Over the next however many weeks, we will be putting up versions of the keyboard interface and using your comments and feedback to make it awesome. Right this minute, the Early Access version requires an Xbox 360 controller.
“This process is not for everyone. Casual players, the easily frustrated, and the short of time should NOT get the Early Access version. Those are not criticisms. It’s just that we want everyone to have the experience that best suits their needs. You all deserve the best, so if you’re not into giving feedback, just wait a few months and play the final version after we make it great.”

US firm to reveals its plans for the living room on Monday
Valve will be making three announcements next week on its plans to take on the TV and living room.
In an email sent to press, the firm said it would be discussing “the steps we’re taking to make Steam more accessiblw on televisions and in the living room”.
The statement also provided a link to Gabe Newell’s recent comments that Valve was set to reveal more news on the long-anticipated Steam Box soon. The first of these three reveals will be made on Monday morning.
Valve’s play for the TV is likely to utilise Steam Big Picture, which was launched last year. The software features a user interface tailored for televisions and gamepads.
With three big announcments set to be made, could one of them be Half-Life 3? There are no suggestions as yet this will be the case, but if Valve plans to release new living room hardware, the much anticipated Half-Life 3 would be a great way of gaining early adopters.
You can view the new microsite where Valve will reveal its plans here.

Criminals are using the massive popularity of crime-simulator Grand Theft Auto 5 in order to commit actual crimes.
Serial codes for the game, which is currently only available on PS3 and Xbox 360 and not on PC, are used to bait gamers unwilling to buy the title.
The game was recently said to be the most successful game in history, toting up $800 million on its launch day, September 17th.
The gamers click through to the fake websites, which use IP detection to translate themselves into the user’s native language, and are showered with adverts and offers, often leading to more malicious software.
Researchers at security software firm Bitdefender also found gamers who were infected after downloading free GTA kits from torrents and peer-to-peer services.
As the game is unavailable on PC, the platform on which serial codes are often used to unlock games on services such as Steam, it is highly likely that almost all serial codes hosted on the internet are fake, with the use of stolen serial codes illegal anyway.

SimCity’s first expansion pack will be released next month on Mac and PC.
‘Cities of Tomorrow’ will take players on a journey 50 years into the future, letting them transform their cities into utopias powered by fusion reactors and tidal wave generators.
Gamers will be able to manufacture a legion of drones and build ‘MegaTowers’.
SimCity was released on PC back in March, but only arrived on Mac last month. The new expansion pack will be available for both on November 12th.
Although this is the first expansion pack for SimCity, it’s not the first future-based Sim expansion pack from EA this year.
The Into the Future pack was released for The Sims 3 earlier this month which also gave players the opportunity to let their Sims explore the ‘world of tomorrow’.

An expansion to the cult game Euro Truck Simulator 2 has launched today, and PCR was lucky enough to receive a copy of the game.
Developed by SCS Software, Euro Truck Simulator 2: Go East adds 13 Eastern European cities from four new countries – Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia – bringing the total number of cities, which already covered the UK, Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands, to more than 70.
Many may approach the game as a po-faced simulator, but the game itself seems to have a sense of humour. Player display avatars include a variety of moustachioed hillbillies and grinning lady-truckers, and players can turn on real-life internet radio from across Europe in their truck (PCR went for a particularly amusing French heavy metal station).
That’s not to say that the game is total goof, either. The controls are true-to-life, with virtual truckers able to control nearly every aspect of their vehicle, from headlamps and windscreen wipers to trailer hitching.
The model of each truck’s cab compartment is lovingly recreated, and players can use the mouse to look around and even stick their head out of the window – which also means they’ll hear the noise of the rushing wind. Similarly, real-life locations and landmarks can also be spotted by players.

At the Linuxcon conference in New Orleans today, Linus Torvalds joined fellow kernel developers in answering a barrage of questions about Linux development. One question he was asked was whether a government agency had ever asked about inserting a back-door into Linux. Torvalds responded 'no' while shaking his head 'yes,' as the audience broke into spontaneous laughter. Torvalds also admitted that while he as a full life outside of Linux he couldn't imagine his life without it. 'I don't see any project coming along being more interesting to me than Linux,' Torvalds said. 'I couldn't imagine filling the void in my life if I didn't have Linux.'"
