It's not the first time we've heard that Surface tablets would be coming in multiple sizes, but Microsoft's Panos Panay offered the clearest indication yet that the line could soon be expanding at a Microsoft Store event in Seattle last night. As GeekWire reports, while Panay didn't get too specific, he did say that Microsoft has "a lot of great things that we are thinking about and working on, and there are multiple aspect ratios and sizes and awesome things to come from Surface." He further went on to confirm that an LTE version of the Surface 2 (but not the Surface Pro 2) would be heading to AT&T in the US and Vodafone in Europe early next year -- something he first mentioned on Reddit last week -- although he again held back on any more specific launch details.

One thing very common to all of us is our reliance on operating systems in our hobby life. If that OS is Windows then you could be in for quite a shakeup with Windows 8. Many readers are Linux or Apple users and couldn’t care less if Microsoft is releasing an entire paradigm shift in desktop navigation. However, you just might find yourself facing this new OS and you’ll look like you’re on training wheels if you don’t get acquainted now, and considering the number of computers being released with Windows 8 its inevitable that day will come soon.
So if you haven’t been behind the wheel of Windows 8 then checkout [Steve’s] Windows 8 Survival Guide from the Guru Brew Tech Show. This is an excellent overview of the new touch screen navigation methods you’ll find in the Windows 8 desktop including hotspots, charms and tiles to name just a few. You’ll also learn tips to get around with a mouse and keyboard. It’s not a complete tutorial on using Windows 8 but you’ll at least know how to navigate, search for apps, work with multiple apps and find tools like task manager, control panel, file explorer as well as your familiar desktop.

The folks over at Valve Corporation have been busy. Just this week they have made three announcements regarding the future of their company; SteamOS, a linux-based operating system, Steam Machines (for running SteamOS), and the one we’re most interested in, the Steam Controller, an open controller. Not to worry though, the controller is not exclusive to the Steam Machines!
This is why we’re intrigued:The Steam Controller was designed from the ground up to be hackable … We plan to make tools available that will enable users to participate in all aspects of the experience, from industrial design to electrical engineering.
We’re curious to see what that exactly means, but it definitely sounds promising! We know that Valve already takes in tons of customer feedback through their Steam Community and Workshop contributors, but how open is this controller really going to be? To read more about it as the information unfolds, check out the topics in the Steam Universe forum.
If you’re interested in joining the hardware beta, head on over here, but space is very limited.

Delta Air Lines plans to buy 11,000 Microsoft Surface 2 tablets for its pilots to replace the heavy bundles of books and maps they haul around now. Delta says the Surface tablets will save it $13 million per year in fuel and other costs. Right now, each pilot carries a 38-pound flight bag with manuals and maps. Other airlines, including American and United, have been buying Apple's iPad for that purpose. One reason Delta picked a Microsoft device was that it's easier to give pilots separate sections for company and personal use, said Steve Dickson, Delta's senior vice president for flight operations. Another reason for picking the Surface tablet is that Delta's training software also runs on the same Windows operating system as the tablets, reducing the need to redo that software for another device, Dickson said.

The price of Nvidia's high-end GeForce GTX Titan and 780 graphics cards is set to fall following the announcement ofAMD's new R9 and R7 models, reports suggest.
Nvidia may lower the prices to maintain its share in the high-end graphics card market, sources told Digitimes.
The vendor is also expected to release two new GPUs in November to defend the $199-249 and $99-149 segments in the US, to compete with rival AMD.
However, it's rumoured that AMD has another four models up its sleeve in a bid to counter any possible competitive movement from Nvidia.
AMD has already announced six new GPUs (the Radeon R9 290X, R9 290, R9 280X, R9 270X, R7 260X and R7 250), and may introduce four more, including the R9 270 and R7 240.
AMD's high-end R9 290X is expected to be priced at around $549 in the US in order to compete with Nvidia's GTX 780 ($599) and higher-priced GTX Titan (around $1,000).
Trade sources were "optimistic" for graphics card sales in the next six months.

Dixons is the latest retailer to join the 3D printer party - it says it's stocking the only one certified for safe at-home use by adults and children.
The Cube from 3D Systems will be available to purchase from the Currys/PC World websites (currys.co.uk and pcworld.co.uk) from October 2nd, priced at £1,195.
However, it won't be in stores (yet). A Dixons spokesperson confirmed to PCR this product will be available online only for the moment.
The Cube comes with 25 free 3D print files designed by professional artists, and is compatible with Mac/Windows software that prepares files for printing from a personal device. It's available in five colours - white, silver, pink, green, and blue.
The 3D printer works using material cartridges made of recyclable and compostable plastics in 16 different colours, including metallic silver and glow in the dark. The coloured plastics are priced at £52.80 each.
Users can print objects up to 5.5" x 5.5" x 5.5" or 140mm x 140mm x 140mm.
Instead of cables, the Cube uses WiFi to let users send prints from the computer.
"The plug-in-and-play simplicity allows anyone using the Cube to start 3D printing as soon as they take it out of the box," read a statement.
"The Cube brightens up tech creativity in any home."
Manufacturer 3D Systems had a presence at the recent Midwich Tech Exposed event, where it showed off 3D printed products including a chainmail-style glove.
Maplin and Selfridges are among the other national retailers to stock 3D printers, while indies are remaining cautious over the devices.

D2X-XL v1.17.1 is released. D2X is a port of Descent 2 to OpenGL. It is an open source project and has received a lot of enhancements compared to Descent 2. My work on this project would not have been possible if hadn't been for the people who initially implemented the OpenGL and SDL code in D2X, so my thanks to them: It is for them that we can still play this great game on modern hardware. My thanks also to the many people who have provided input for this project, be it in the form of bug reports, great ideas, logos, encouragement, or other.
Descent 2 is a pretty old game, and further development has slowed down; so there are a few issues - some still stemming from the original Descent 2 - that have never been adressed or solved in D2X.
As I still like Descent 2 pretty much, I was always looking for a way to get rid of the things that plagued me most in Descent 2. Getting hold of the D2X source files and being able to create a MS Visual C++ 6 project for D2X finally enabled me to fix these annoyances.
D2X-XL Features:
- Full colored lighting, lightmaps, per pixel lighting
- Smoke, lightning, volumetric glare, gun effects (light and smoke trails, tracers, lightning bolts, dynamic shield effects, thruster flames, transparent, additively blended explosions)
- Anaglyph 3D rendering (amber/blue, red/cyan, green/magenta)
- Many multiplayer enhancements (true CTF, Entropy, Monsterball, up to 16 players, tracker support, UDP/IP connectivity)
- Massive level building enhancements (up to 20000 segments and 2000 walls, triangular segments, new segment types, new programmable trigger types, sound and effect objects, cameras, in-level teleports)
- Many gameplay enhancements (improved collision detection, improved collision physics, framerate independent weapon behavior, improved cockpit)
- High resolution textures, ship and robot models, high quality sound
- Allows full per mission modding of all game elements (models, AI, textures, sound, music)
- In-game context-based help function
- Simple automatic installation
- Sophisticated level editor (flexible interface, OpenGL renderer, 1st and 3rd person views, advanced lighting and segment editing functions)
- and much, much more

Graphics card manufacturer AMD spent between $5m and $8m to secure its Battlefield 4 partnership, a new report has claimed.
Fudzilla claims to have word from “multiple sources” that the company spent the huge sum to not only secure the game’s bundling with its new range of graphics cards but also to convince EA to make a Mantle-friendly version of the PC shooter.
Mantle was revealed last week and is a new toolset that supposedly allows developers more direct access and control of a graphics card’s architecture. It is being sold as a method to extract more performance form PC hardware than has until now been available.
The PC version of Battlefield 4, which releases on November 1st, will ship with Mantle support, giving AMD what it believes is a key marketing edge over rival Nvidia on what will be one of the biggest PC releases of the year.
AMD last week announced its next generation of graphics cards with the $599 R9 290X leading the pack. The top-level card is expected to rival or even surpass Nvidia’s $999 GTX Titan in performance terms, although we’re yet to see any benchmarks.

Kicking off this week's CEATEC show in Japan, Sharp has played to its strengths with its new Windows 8 tablet, the Mebius Pad, factoring in a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution display. That puts it pretty far ahead of the current crowd of 1080p Windows 8 tablets, including Microsoft's incoming Surface 2, although we admit, we'd have loved to have seen another incredible 4K tablet. Regardless, that's the highest resolution Windows 8 tablet we've seen yet. Alongside the company's 10.1-inch IGZO panel (known for theirlow-power credentials), the Mebius Pad runs on a slightly less-exciting Intel quad-core Atom processor (the Z3370), which we've had mixed feelings on when it comes to the Windows tablets its powered in the past. The basic Windows 8.1 model will arrive with Office for free, although you'll have to pay extra if you want it for the Pro edition. Also, following Japanese trends for practically any device, the slab is both water and dust-proof (it's in the midst of being certified for IPX5, IPX7, IP5X), while you'll be able to buy it with LTE radios on board, at least for Nippon, as the device is unlikely to leave Japanese shores once it launches in early 2014.
Unsurprisingly, in the flesh the screen looked good -- Sharp even provided a magnifying glass so we could get up close to those pixels. The 10.1-inch display is also satisfyingly bright -- if we're honest, it's unusual to see such a capable screen powered by an Atom processor. The tablet is headed towards business use (which explains the optional stylus) and the extra resolution found on Sharp's first Windows 8 tablet means there's more space for your spreadsheets and documents. The hardware itself is suitably thin and light, with the rear of the device bearing a passing resemblance to recent Sony hardware -- possibly due to the understated camera lens in the corner. We'll let you know if Sharp has plans to offer the tablet to global business types.

Now that we have the full picture of Valve's efforts to bring PC gaming to the living room (SteamOS, dedicated hardware, and a fresh controller design), people are starting to analyze what those efforts will mean for gaming, and what Valve must do to be successful. Eurogamer's Oli Welsh points out that even if Steam Machines aren't able to take the market away from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, they put us a step closer to the final console generation. "Valve has hopefully sidestepped the most depressing aspect of console gaming: the enforced obsolescence that makes you consign your entire games collection to a dusty cupboard every five years." GamesRadar notes that Valve's approach is fundamentally different from that of the current console manufacturers because it's about putting more power into the hands of the users. "The takeaway from SteamOS, then, is that openness breeds innovation. Valve's putting the very source code of its operating system in the hands of everyone who wants it just to see what happens. Comparatively, Microsoft is pushing its Windows Store, turning Windows into an increasingly closed platform (i.e. one that charges costly development licensing fees and restricts access to certain content providers)." Everyone's curious to see how the controller will perform, so Gamasutra and Kotaku reached out to a number of game developers who have experimented with prototypes already. "[Dan Tabar of indie studio Data Realms] said the configuration map for the controller allows you to do 'pretty much anything.' For example, developers can slice up a pad into quarters, each one representing a different input, or even into eight radial sections, again, each section representing whatever you want, mapping to key combinations, or to the mouse." Tommy Refenes, co-creator of Super Meat Boy, wrote an in-depth description of his experience with the device. He summed up his reaction by saying, "Great Start, needs some improvements, but I could play any game I wanted with it just fine."

Microsoft company officials demonstrated a prototype cloud streaming service for games during an internal meeting this week, The Verge reports.
Unnamed sources who are close to the event confirmed that officials had a streamed version of Halo 4 up and running on Windows PCs and even a Windows Phone (including Xbox 360 controller support via an attached peripheral). The demonstration reportedly ran smoothly, with latency on a Lumia 520 phone dipping as low as 45ms.
Sony purchased Gaikai earlier this year in a bid to establish a streaming service for the PlayStation 4. Microsoft previously announced that it would use cloud computing to leverage additional processing power for games like TitanFall, but has not confirmed plans for a cloud-based streaming service.

Windows users rejoice: the days of only being able to install apps on five different devices will soon be over. Starting October 9th, apps purchased with a single Windows Store account will be sharable among up to 81 devices. If you recall, we learned back atBuild that Microsoft would be increasing the app roaming limit, but today's announcement clarifies some key details nonetheless. Says the company in a blog post: "The change we're introducing will reduce the friction that most active customers have in being able to access their favorite apps from any device, and will give developers additional opportunities to monetize." This of course means one other thing: you're going to need a bigger backpack.

There’s much excitement online this week as Valve detailed more of its battleplan to get Steam a space in the living room.
To start with, SteamOS promises to get the service and its games on home TVs, not just laptops or desktops PCs hidden in the dining room or bedroom. After that, there’s a threat of dedicated hardware delivering Valve and its many partners’ games onto the big screen.
Is some perspective needed here, though? The living room is getting crowded in terms of viable platforms. Surely some will crumble?
And how is this any different from the expansion of any other major revenue-hungry global retail corporation? Is a Steam shop opening in your TV a little bit like a Starbucks opening next to your kettle?
Sure, come into my home, take my credit card details, and attempt to monopolise my tastes.
Are we only allowed to pour scorn on tax-dodging street-date breaking Amazon, yet applaud Valve, fresh from opening a new office in Luxembourg?
Overall, any Steam-flavoured activity in the living room is likely to be good news for game sales. As we saw in recent weeks with Total War: Rome II, a digital release can boost boxed sales, and vice versa.
We’ve learned that the digital/physical games business is not binary – the two sides feed off each other, whether you’re selling a plush toy of a game character or their latest adventure.
