An article at DailyTech begins, 'While many people scoffed at or failed to recognized the significance of Microsoft Corp.'s talk of a "unified" development path for Windows, Xbox, and Windows Phone, the real world ramifications of that approach are now becoming clear — and they're significant. A pre-order page from Dell for the Xbox One "accidentally" (and, it appears, officially) revealed that Windows 8.1 apps will run on the Xbox.'"A Microsoft spokesperson told AllThingsD, 'The suggestion that all Windows 8 apps run on Xbox One is not accurate," but they didn't deny that there would be some cross-compatibility. PCWorld's article has words of caution: "It would certainly be interesting if the full-blown Windows Store landed on Xbox One. But don't hold your breath for it to be there at the console's launch, no matter what Dell's words vaguely imply.

D2X-XL v1.17.4 is released. D2X is a port of Descent 2 to OpenGL. It is an open source project and has received a lot of enhancements compared to Descent 2. My work on this project would not have been possible if hadn't been for the people who initially implemented the OpenGL and SDL code in D2X, so my thanks to them: It is for them that we can still play this great game on modern hardware. My thanks also to the many people who have provided input for this project, be it in the form of bug reports, great ideas, logos, encouragement, or other.
Descent 2 is a pretty old game, and further development has slowed down; so there are a few issues - some still stemming from the original Descent 2 - that have never been adressed or solved in D2X.
As I still like Descent 2 pretty much, I was always looking for a way to get rid of the things that plagued me most in Descent 2. Getting hold of the D2X source files and being able to create a MS Visual C++ 6 project for D2X finally enabled me to fix these annoyances.
D2X-XL v1.17.4 Changelog:
- Improved: When rendering to an Oculus Rift device, D2X-XL will automatically use the Rift's native resolution
- Changed: Oculus Rift and NVidia shutter glass based stereo rendering will only be offered in the render options menu if the required hardware is available
- Fixed: The program crashed during startup
- Fixed: New save games were broken
- Fixed: The game could crash when starting a new mission
- Fixed: Soft particle blending didn't work with side by side rendering

After releasing and subsequently pulling a buggy version of Windows RT 8.1 from the Windows Store, Microsoft is offering a fix to affected users. Redmond has released instructions for restoring those devices that involves creating a USB recovery drive among other things. If doing it DIY seems a bit overwhelming, however, you can also send your tablet in for service. No word yet on when a fresh and fixed version of the Windows RT update will return to the Windows Store, but you can find detailed instructions for restoring your tablet at the source link below.

Jeff Atwood at Coding Horror is trying to figure out why the battery life for devices running Windows is so much worse than similar (or identical) devices running other operating systems. For example, the Surface Pro 2 made great strides over the original Surface Pro, increasing web-browsing battery life by 42%, but it still lags far behind Android and iOS tablets. The deficit doesn't get any better when Windows is run on Apple hardware. Atwood says, 'Microsoft positions Windows 8 as an operating system that's great for tablets, which are designed for casual web browsing and light app use – but how can that possibly be true when Windows idle power management is so much worse than the competition's desktop operating system in OS X – much less their tablet and phone operating system, iOS?' Anand Lal Shimpi is perplexed, too. Atwood is now reaching out to the community for answers: 'None of the PC vendors he spoke to could justify it, or produce a Windows box that managed similar battery life to OS X. And that battery life gap is worse today – even when using Microsoft's own hardware, designed in Microsoft's labs, running Microsoft's latest operating system released this week. Microsoft can no longer hand wave this vast difference away based on vague references to "poorly optimized third party drivers." ... I just wish somebody could explain to me and Anand why Windows is so awful at managing idle power.

Gartner expects PC, tablet, smartphone shipments to grow 4.5% this year, wearable computing won't take off before 2017
PCs, tablets, and smartphones are seeing increasing demand around the world, but it's no longer the priciest options driving the business. According to IT research firm Gartner, the growth is coming from cost-conscious consumers.
"The market is being driven by a shift to lower-priced devices in nearly all device categories," the company said today, revealing details from its latest market forecast report. "The mobile phone market will continue to experience steady growth, but the opportunity for high average selling price (ASP) smartphones is now ending. Growth is expected to come from mid-tier smartphones in mature markets and low-end Android smartphones in emerging markets."
At the same time, top-of-the-line tablets are feeling a pinch as consumers opt for smaller screen sizes and prices in the 7-inch form factor are increasingly competitive. Even so, Gartner expects tablet shipments to grow 53 percent this year, and another 42 percent in 2014.
Meanwhile, PC shipments are expected to decline 8 percent this year and another 7 percent next year. Gartner believes the smartphone market will continue growing, but at a modest clip, with shipments up less than 4 percent this year, and just over 5 percent for 2014. Combining the PC, tablet, and smartphone markets together with the small-but-growing ultramobile category, Gartner projects total worldwide shipments of these electronic devices to grow 4.5 percent this year, and 7.5 percent in 2014.
Gartner also weighed in on wearable computing, saying the devices' penetration into the market will be limited for the near-term. The firm expects fewer than 1 percent of consumers to swap out their phones for a wearable computing/tablet combo by 2017.
"For wearables to be successful, they need to add to the user experience by complementing and enhancing what other devices already offer," Gartner VP of research Carolina Milanesi said. "They also need to be stylish yet practical, and most of all hit the right price. In the short term, we expect consumers to look at wearables as nice to have rather than a 'must have,' leaving smartphones to play the role of our faithful companion throughout the day."

The long-awaited Windows 8.1 update seems to have brought with it more than just a Start menu.
There are claims on Reddit that the OS update has also introduced some unwelcome mouse lag, with titles such as Deus Ex Human Revolution, STALKER and Valve games among those that are affected.
The problem apparently lies with games that don’t use ‘raw input’ for reading mouse movements.
“Something about Window's relationship with your mouse has been altered (specifically, the Multi DPI improvement for multiple monitors) and this causes those games that don't read raw mouse data to become close-to unplayable,” the Reddit thread claims.
“Hacking in Human Revolution is particularly unplayable with this issue. Reading around the internet for support, apparently Call of Duty is affected as well.”

Crytek’s free-to-play PC browser FPS Warface is now available in Europe and America.
Also going live in said regions today is Crytek’s equally as colourfully named GFACE network, which users will be signed up to if they play Warface.
"Our goal with Warface has always been to show that free-to-play games can be top quality, blockbuster experiences that match the industry's highest standards,” Crytek’s general manager of publishing Dirk Metzger stated.
“By bringing the game to players in North America, Europe and Turkey today, a vast new audience can now see for themselves the lengths we've gone to in order to achieve that vision and make Warface stand out from the crowd."
Warface came under the spotlight recently following its decision to incorporate some reasonably provocative female skins into its character roster. It’s also due for a release on Xbox 360 some time next year.
As of November last year the game had attracted 5m registered users.

Everywhere you look, change is afoot in computer networking. As data centers grow in size and complexity, traditional tools are proving too slow or too cumbersome to handle that expansion. Dinesh Dutt is Chief Scientist at Cumulus Networks. Cumulus has been working to change the way we think about networks altogether by dispensing with the usual software/hardware lockstep, and instead using Linux as the operating system on network hardware. In this week's New Tech Forum, Dinesh details the reasons and the means by which we may see Linux take over yet another aspect of computing: the network itself.

The Windows 8.1 rollout has hit more hurdles: the new version 11 of Internet Explorer that ships with the operating systemdoes not render Google products well and is also making life difficult for users of Microsoft's own Outlook Web Access webmail product. The latter issue is well known: Microsoft popped out some advice about the fact that only the most basic interface to the webmail tool will work back in July. It seems not every sysadmin got the memo and implemented Redmond's preferred workarounds, but there are only scattered complaints out there, likely because few organisations have bothered implementing Windows 8.1 yet."Also from the article: "Numerous reports suggest that IE 11 users can once again enjoy access to all things Google if they un-tick the IE 11 option to 'Use Microsoft Compatibility lists.'" And here's Microsoft KB work around.

After nine years of development, The Dark Mod is now a standalone game. Thief fans can now enjoy over 60 fan made missions which capture the essence of the Thief 1 / 2 games. Originally created as a reaction to Thief 3; with the upcoming release of Thief 4, many are comparing what was done here (a faithful extension of the old gameplay) to what Eidos has shown thus far. Can a little Doom 3 mod compete against a blockbuster AAA title? Should we even compare them?"All code in the The Dark Mod is GPLv3+, and the art assets are all CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 Unported which means it, unfortunately, cannot be distributed by even Debian. Still, an impressive feat!

Nvidia has announced the GTX 780 Ti, a high-end GPU expected to be one step below the Titan.
The graphic specialist’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang revealed the card at the end of an Nvidia event in Montreal, introducing the card by saying: “You really can’t do an Nvidia event without graphics cards.”
“Today we’re announcing our new baby here,” he continued, holding the card up in front of the audience.
Not many details were revealed, but Huang said that the card was “the best GPU that’s ever been built”, with “outstanding” performance and “low” power.
It is expected that the 780, which is currently being distributed to reviewers, will offer performance just below that of Nvidia’s flagship powerhouse card, the Titan.
The card will be released in mid-November, and is likely to compete with AMD’s R9 290X, whichhas been said by the company to be “much faster” than the Titan.

Microsoft has temporarily removed its Windows RT 8.1 upgrade from the Windows Store after a number of reports that it was bricking Surface tablets.
In a post on Microsoft’s Answers site, a forum moderator explained: “Microsoft is investigating a situation affecting a limited number of users updating their Windows RT devices to Windows RT 8.1. As a result, we have temporarily removed the Windows RT 8.1 update from the Windows Store.
“We are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and apologise for any inconvenience. We will provide updates as they become available.”
At the time of writing Microsoft has not provided a fix, so for those who have already downloaded the upgrade and now have an unusable device, Kick That Computer has posted instructions to rescue any Surface RT tablet that’s been killed by the update.
The rescue involves creating a bootable USB recovery drive, booting the device from the recovery drive, and entering the startup repair menus.

Sony Online Entertainment will be shutting down the servers for online turn-based strategy game Magic: The Gathering - Tactics on March 28, 2014, according to an announcement made on the game's official forums.
"Today we are announcing with our partner, Wizards of the Coast, that we will discontinue game services for Magic: The Gathering - Tactics on March 28, 2014," the initial post reads. "We are honored to have been a part of bringing you the magic of the Multiverse over the last few years. It has been a fun and memorable journey, and we thank you for all of your dedication and support."
Unfortunately, if you wanted to experience the game before the hammer comes down and hadn't yet made an account, you're out of luck; new game accounts can no longer be created. Existing players' options will soon be restricted as well, as no new packs will be available to purchase in-game after November 18 of this year, and SOE will retain all code and data from Tactics, meaning no licensed or authorized emulators or fan servers.
March 28, 2014 will see the end of Magic: The Gathering - Tactics. On that day, feel free to solemnly sing the following: Bye, bye, Mr. Minotaur Guy, tapped my blue land then my green land, soon my deck will be dry. Them good ol' boys was playin' dragons with Fly, singin' "This'll be the day Tactics diiiiies."

First-person exploration game The Stanley Parable has taken Steam's weekly charts by storm, grabbing the number one spot in just two and a half days of availability.
The indie game launched Thursday – late in the weekly sales period that measures Valve's top ten list – and quickly climbed to the top of the best sellers list.
The Batman: Arkham series also performed well thanks to a combination sale and pre-order promotion, with Arkham City taking fourth and Arkham Origins finishing ninth.
Indie political simulator Democracy 3 also saw a strong launch that earned it the seventh spot.
- The Stanley Parable
- Football Manager 2014
- Terraria
- Batman: Arkham City – Game of the Year Edition
- The Wolf Among Us
- Payday 2
- Democracy 3
- Call of Duty: Ghosts

If you're one of the few people who own a Windows RT tablet (don't all raise your hands at once, now), you just got a chunk of your Saturday back. Citing a "situation affecting a limited number of users updating their Windows RT devices to Windows RT 8.1," Microsoft has pulled the upgrade from the Windows Store. The company hasn't supplied an explanation, though various sources cite boot configuration issues that can cause the update to fail. Microsoft says it is "working to resolve the situation as quickly" and "will provide updates as they become available."

Dell introduced us to its Venue 8 Pro Windows 8.1 tablet and Haswell refresh of the XPS 15 earlier this month, and starting today both products -- along with two VenueAndroid slates -- are available online. The Venue 8 Pro, you may recall, offers an 1,280 x 800 IPS display, an Atom processor and an optional Synaptics digitizer. That model will go for $300 and up, while the pen costs an extra $35. Meanwhile, Dell's answer to the Surface Pro 2, the Venue Pro 11, will ship in November.
The latest XPS 15, available with a 3,200 x 1,800 IPS display and up to a Core i7 Haswell CPU, starts at $1,500 for a full HD panel and $1,900 for the more pixel-dense version. Finally, the budget-priced Dell Venue 7 and 8 tablets, both of which run Android 4.2, are also available today. As previously reported, these guys will set you back $150 or $180, respectively. Head to Dell's website to view all the configuration options.

The PC versions of both Batman: Arkham City and Arkham Asylum have been patched to remove the ill-fated Games for Windows Live.
The Steam versions of the games will have been automatically updated and will now operate from Steam’s servers.
Those who bought the games from a rival provider or on disc will need to enter their CD key into Steam to download the corrected versions. This is only needed once and from that point on they will be able to re-download at their leisure.
It’s not all good news, however – the move seems to have wiped single-player saves, which were stored on the GFWL servers, meaning that users will have to start over. This is a real pain for those who have put several hours into what are fairly sizable games.
Games for Windows Live will be terminated forever on July 1st 2014.
