Google has been steadily updating the developer version of its Chrome browser to run Chrome OS in Windows 8.
When launched in Windows 8’s Metro mode the developer version of the browser now displays a UI identical to Chrome OS, with Chrome, Gmail, Google, Docs and YouTube icons along a shelf at the bottom of the screen.
As with Chrome OS, several windows can be opened and snapped to the edges of the screen.
The standard version of Chrome in Metro instead launches a fullscreen version of the browser.
The mode still contains a few bugs, and isn’t compatible with Windows RT, on which Chrome isn’t available.
The browser’s transformation follows Google’s expansion of Chrome Web Apps with Chrome Apps, which run outside of the browser and are said to be as fast and powerful as standard desktop programs.

The Half-Life 3 trademark reportedly filed last week has now disappeared.
The trademark application, filed with the European Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market, appeared late last week, but raised some sceptical eyebrows due to an absence of a similar filing with the US Patents and Trademarks Office.
Now the filing has vanished, suggesting that the news had been a hoax.
Many gamers had hoped to see some news about the long-anticipated sequel as part of Valve’s three-tiered announcement campaign, which instead turned out to be the reveal of SteamOS,Steam Machines and the Steam Controller.
For now, at least, they will have to keep on waiting.

Launch Chrome in Windows 8 and you won't see much that's different compared to other desktop releases, even in the Metro-like mode. That may change soon. Google's has posted a Dev Channel version of its browser whose Windows 8 interface mimicsChrome OS, right down to the app tray and multi-window system. Whether or not many users will see this view isn't certain, however. Features in Chrome developer builds aren't guaranteed to reach finished software; this may remain an experiment. If the next stable version of the browser feels like a Chromebook sales pitch, though, it won't be a surprise.

The PlayStation 4's DualShock 4 controller will have compatibility "for basic functions" on Windows PCs out of the box, Shuhei Yoshida, President of Worldwide Studios for Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed viaTwitter.
When asked on Twitter if Sony would release a driver for the DualShock 4 to make it compatible with Windows PCs, Yoshida tweeted back, "the analog sticks and buttons will work just fine." When pressed if this meant the controller would feature Windows compatibility by default, Yoshida responded it would, for "basic functions." What those functions are remains to be seen.
What's also unclear is whether Windows will recognize the DualShock 4 as a DualShock 4. Many non-Microsoft controllers feature the XInput API, which makes them register to the computer as though they were an Xbox controller. The current-generation DualShock 3 lacks Xinput, so it would mark a significant change if the DualShock 4 supported it. When asked if games on PC would automatically recognize the controller as a DualShock 4, Yoshida said to wait until a post-launch field report.
Waiting may not be the most fun thing in the world to do, but this wait won't betoo long: the PlayStation 4 launches November 15 in North America.

When Valve ships its own prototype version of a Steam Machine later this year to 300 beta users, those folks are getting relatively tiny and powerful gaming consoles. At very least, it'll have an NVIDIA GTX 660 (all the way through Titan), and anywhere from an Intel i3 CPU to an i7-4770. All prototypes come with 3GB of DDR5 RAM and a 1TB/8GB Hybrid SSHD for storage. A 450w battery powers the 12 x 12.4 x 2.9in. boxes, which is internal (no external power supply! alright!).
Valve says it isn't ready to show off the box just yet, but offers more details than the prototype's initial announcement: the prototype is built entirely from "off-the-shelf PC parts," and is "fully upgradeable." In fact, aside from the prototype's custom housing, Valve says, "anyone can go and build exactly the same machine." The company even plans on sharing the CAD files for the housing, should you wish to directly replicate Valve's efforts. The forum post also says we'll see the box soon, before the beta units head out to 300 lucky folks. Head below for the full range of specs.
Of course, the worry here is pricing. We still don't know how much any of this will cost, and it certainly smells like it won't be cheap. For example, Xi3's modestly powerful Piston gaming PC carries a $1,000 price tag. On the low end, just Valve's prototype's NVIDIA GPU costs around $200 (with the high-end Titan coming in around $1,000), which is to say nothing of the custom work required to fit said NVIDIA GPUs and Intel CPUs and everything inside a custom 12 x 12.4 x 2.9in. enclosure. If nothing else, beta users are getting a relatively pricey piece of tech for free -- an endeavor that no doubt engenders a lot of love from Valve's loyal community. What we'll see available for sale some time next year, however, may look a lot different than what we're seeing in this prototype.

EA’s controversial PC and Mac title SimCity could yet have an offline future.
Maxis Emeryville studio MD Patrick Buechner confirmed ina blog post that the developer is actively exploring the possibility, which has been called for by fans ever since the game made its troubled arrival earlier this year.
“Right now we have a team specifically focused on exploring the possibility of an offline mode,” Buechner stated. “I can’t make any promises on when we will have more information, but we know this is something that many of our players have been asking for.
“While the server connectivity issues are behind us, we would like to give our players the ability to play even if they choose not to connect. An offline mode would have the additional benefit of providing room to the modding community to experiment without interfering or breaking the multiplayer experience.”
That’s not the only change that was called for. Players have also been clamouring for larger city sizes. Sadly, Maxis had bad news.
“City sizes have been a constant point of conversation among our players since we released the game,” he added. “The game’s original design focused on the density of an intimate urban environment. It was about intercity connectivity and the challenge of managing a region of cities instead of one metropolis in isolation.
“However, we recognise that many players have expressed the desire to build up one big city rather than manage the interrelationship of multiple smaller cities. We’ve put months of investigation into making larger city sizes, reworking the terrain maps, changing the routing algorithms of our agent-based system and altering the way that GlassBox processes the data in a larger space.
“After months of testing, I confirm that we will not be providing bigger city sizes. The system performance challenges we encountered would mean that the vast majority of our players wouldn’t be able to load, much less play with bigger cities.
“We’ve tried a number of different approaches to bring performance into an acceptable range, but we just couldn’t achieve it within the confines of the engine. We’ve chosen to cease work on bigger city sizes and put that effort into continuing to evolve the core game and explore an offline mode. Some of the experiments we conducted to improve performance on bigger cities will be rolled into future updates to improve overall game performance.”

AMD’s upcoming high-end Radeon R9 290X graphics card looks like it will cost more than initially expected.
Upon its reveal last month it was being reported that the card would retail for $599 – or around the same price as Nvidia’s GTX 780. However, TechSpot reports that the first prices to appear online for the GPU are coming in at around $699.
Which is still less than a GTX Titan, of course.
A release date of October 31st is also being speculated.
On the other side of the GPU divide, Nvidia is believed to be about to lift the lid on its R7-rivalling GTX 750 Ti.
Fudzilla reports that the GPU is built on a revised GK106 core and has a base clock of 1033MHz, boosting to 1098MHz. A 256-bit memory bus is welcome, however.
Rumours are also doing the rounds that Nvidia will shortly reveal the GTX 770 Ti, though this is not confirmed.

Valve has revealed their first Steam Machines prototype details. The first 300 Steam Machine prototypes to ship will usevarious high-end Intel CPUs and NVIDIA GPUs while running their custom SteamOS Linux distribution. The Intel Haswell CPU + NVIDIA GPU combination should work well on Linux with the binary drivers. Using a range of CPUs/GPUs in the prototypes will allow them to better gauge the performance and effectiveness. Valve also said they will be releasing the CAD design files to their custom living room console enclosure for those who'd like to reproduce them."Valve is careful to point out that these specs aren't intended as a standard: "[T]o be clear, this design is not meant to serve the needs of all of the tens of millions of Steam users. It may, however, be the kind of machine that a significant percentage of Steam users would actually want to purchase — those who want plenty of performance in a high-end living room package. Many others would opt for machines that have been more carefully designed to cost less, or to be tiny, or super quiet, and there will be Steam Machines that fit those descriptions.

Microsoft has been making a big push with its Outlook.com email service sincemigrating all of its Hotmail users there, and it's now also set to more deeply integrate the service into Windows 8.1. The company has detailed a number of updates to the operating system's Mail app in a blog post today -- something first promised at its BUILD conference this summer -- which will see the app brought in line with a number of features that have so far remained exclusive to the web-based offering. That includes automatic sorting of newsletters and social updates, Outlook's so-called Sweep feature for organizing email, as well as automatic syncing across devices with Exchange ActiveSync. Outside of those Outlook-related features, the app will now also let you finally drag-and-drop messages into folders, and Microsoft says that the entire app has been optimized for use on a tablet. You can find a full rundown of all the new features on Microsoft's Windows Experience Blog.

October 4th, 2013, 00:32 Posted By: wraggster
Ubisoft’s leaked Watch Dogs PC specification requirements have raised some eyebrows.
The specs, spotted by NeoGaf before they were hauled off uPlay, dictate amongst other things that the game will require a 64-bit version of Windows. That, in itself, is not a huge shock and was perhaps expected in the step up to next-gen.
What seems more curious are the game’s apparent CPU requirements.
The Recommended specs dictate that machines will need an eight core CPU. The two named examples are AMD’s FX-8350 and Intel’s Core i7-3770 – the latter of which is only actually a quad core chip, although it is able to operate with eight threads.
The Ultra specs are even more extreme, giving the example CPUs of AMD’s £200-250 eight core FX-9370 or Intel’s £450 six core i7-3930k.
This seems odd for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, while both the PS4 and Xbox One may be based on an eight core CPU architecture (although some of these will be locked away for system use) the chips found inside both machines lag miles behind far less advanced PC CPUs than what we see here, including gaming PC favourites like the Intel i5-3570k or newer i5-4570k.
It seems bizarre that a game like Watch Dogs would require an eight core CPU when older quad core, or even some dual core chips, can offer considerably more oomph than either of the next-gen consoles can manage.
The second oddity is that these seemingly extreme CPU requirements are matched with disproportionately low GPU needs. The Recommended specs cite the Nvidia GTX 560ti or AMD Radeon HD 7850 as examples – both of which are roughly on par with what users are going to be getting inside PS4 and Xbox One.
The Ultra specs aren’t a huge step up from this, naming the GTX 670 and Radeon HD 7970.
The miscorrelation could point to a mistake in the spec listings, or perhaps as some are feared a wonky PC port that favours raw brute tech power over any form of optimisation.
What will be interesting to see upon the game’s release next month is whether owners of older quad core CPUs (we’re looking at you, Intel i5-3570k) really do have to endure the performance hit these specs suggest, or whether their sizable power advantage over next-gen consoles will see them through.

Nearly 600,000 people have signed a petition calling on Rockstar to release a PC version of Grand Theft Auto V.
The game came out on Xbox 360 and PS3 last month but Rockstar has to date remained tight-lipped about a possible release on either PC or next-gen consoles.
Its predecessor Grand Theft Auto IV did arrive on PC, but its release came some eight months after its console debut.
“Please release GTA V on PC,” the petition, which currently sits on 576,579 signatures, reads. “GTA games have been a large part of so many people's lives and it's a big shame not seeing the newest iteration of the game being released on the most powerful platform.
“Things like modifications have always been a HUGE part of PC gaming and modded GTA is some of the most insanely fun times you can have.
“I hope you consider the release of GTA V on PC as it'll make...”

Valve has announced SteamOS, Steam Machines, and a Steam controller — the components necessary for it to create a viable living-room gaming experience. Valve's strategy with these releases seems pretty clear: create a platform based on openness (SteamOS is a Linux-based operating system), in contrast to the closed systems pushed by console rivals such as Sony and Microsoft. If Valve chooses to release Half-Life 3 in conjunction with its Steam Machines' rollout, it could help create further buzz for the system, given the years' worth of pent-up demand for the next chapter in the popular FPS saga. But can Valve's moves allow it to actually compete against Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony on equal terms? What do you think?"

Valve has filed for a Half-Life 3 trademark in Europe, meaning the next offering of the dystopian FPS might not be too far away.
With Valve’s trio of announcements last week, many were expecting to see details about Half-Life 3. In actual fact, Valve unveiled SteamOS, Steam Machines, and a Steam controller.
While many gamers were disappointed at no mention of HL3, this latest news should give them some hope.
Whether the trademark indicates that the game will be released soon, or if Valve is just making sure a trademark troll doesn’t get there first, Half-Life 3 is possibly one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the past few years.

Sony UK boss Fergal Gara has said that Sony "can't afford to ignore" Valve's recent Steam Machine and SteamOS announcements.
Valve stole the spotlight last week with a trio of announcements related to its grand plan for bringing Steam games to the living room. The firm revealed its television-focussed operating system SteamOS and Steam Machines, alongside a new controller designed to offer innovative new input mechanics.
Valve has essentially launched a direct assault on the living room space currently dominated by Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft consoles. While Gara remains confident of PlayStation's position, he does admit that Steam could pose a credible threat.
"In this market you've always got to expect some broadside disruptive technologies to come along, and it seems like a potentially good example of that," Gara told Eurogamer.
"I haven't had a chance to study it in much detail. What I would say is, I don't think anything about it is significantly rattling our confidence at this point in time and what we're doing as PlayStation. We have to keep an eye on Valve and many other competitors.
He added, "We can't afford to ignore it. Steam is arguably the pre-eminent digital download service for gaming. So we'll watch it."
Sony has confirmed a PS4 launch date of November 15 in US and November 29 in Europe and Latin America. 'Launch window' titles would typically be expected to fall in the three months following.
The platform holder has also confirmed a list of 15 PS4 launch games, promising that 33 retail games will be out by the end of December 2013.

Toshiba's overall TV division may be ailing, but it's innovations like this that'll keep it from completely decaying. Displayed at the company's CEATEC booth here in Japan are two new 4K HDTV displays -- the 40-inch 40V and 50-inch 50V. Outside of devilishly-thin bezels and native 4K resolutions, the company's not talking specifications. What it's focusing on instead is the concept: it's dreaming of an Ultra HD range of displays that can operate as televisions and as pro-grade reference monitors. After all, budding editors who are being tasked with cutting together 4K footagecertainly deserve a monitor that won't cut corners, right?
A company representative informed us that while the displays weren't perfectly color accurate, they were far superior to rivals. Plus, the ability to easily toggle between reference mode and various other living room-accepted modes will enable a level of A/B testing that's pretty tough to get right now. Naturally, both monitors looked stunning up close, and if we're being candid, we're fallen in love with Photoshop all over again after seeing it displayed on these guys.
