Pirates keen to get their hands on an apparently leaked version of Grand Theft Auto V are being hit with a Trojan virus hidden in the file.
TomsGuide reports that a file masquerading as a PC version of Rockstar’s game – which, in fact, does not exist as the game is currently only scheduled for PS3 and Xbox 360 – actually installs a version of Double Fine’s The Cave.
From that point users are prompted to complete a survey in order to obtain the serial number, part of which requires that participants send off a text message that then charges accounts €1 per day. AND it installs a Trojan.
So pretty grotty all round.
It’s not uncommon for big games to leak out ahead of release and with such huge anticipation surrounding Rockstar’s title there’s a nervous wait to see if the final code can be locked down and kept safe until the day of release on September 17th.

[h=1]Minecraft sales have topped 12 million copies on PC, Mac and Linux, according to Marcus 'Notch' Persson, the creator of the smash hit.
The total is up from 11 million copies in late June, and takes lifetime sales of the title across all platforms to 33 million, Mojang told IGN.
The Xbox 360 version of the game surpassed eight million sales last month, while sales of the Pocket Edition stood at ten million in May.
An Xbox One version of Minecraft was announced at E3 in June. Building off the 360 version, it promises "larger maps for more complex structures, expanded multiplayer features and enhanced gameplay".
At Gamescom last month, Sony and Mojang said a PS4 version of Minecraft will be available when the console launches in November. The title is also coming to PS3 and Vita.
We said in our Minecraft: Xbox 360 review: "Whether you're mining, crafting, building, or fighting - either alone, or with friends - there's nothing quite like Minecraft. An accomplished, streamlined port that's a perfect fit for Xbox 360."

It was just last spring at Engadget Expand that Lenovo teased the ThinkPad T431sbusiness Ultrabook, and now it's already coming out with a follow-on product. The company today announced the refreshed T440s, along with the T440, the X240 (shown above) and two mid-range Ultrabooks, the S440 and the S540. In fact, though the S540 isn't the highest-end machine on offer here, even that's worth mention, as it's the company's first 15-inch Ultrabook aimed at businesses. (Guess that bigger-screen trend is going strong, eh?)
Diving right in, the 14-inch T440s represents a fairly modest upgrade, as the T431s already ushered in some fairly big design changes (buttonless trackpad, latchless lid, 180-degree hinge, et cetera). The T440s has all that too, except it makes the natural shift to Intel's fourth-generation Haswell processors, along with an optional NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M GPU (which won't be offered here in North America). The T440 is closely related, as you'd expect, with similar configuration options (optional touchscreens, up to 12GB of RAM and up to either a 1TB HDD or a 512GB SSD). The main difference is that the resolution on the T440 is also capped at 1,600 x 900, whereas the T440s goes up to 1080p. Also, the T440s is a good lighter than the T440 (read: half a pound less).

Low-power parts for hand-held devices may be all the rage right now, but today Intel is taking the wraps off a new high-end desktop processor with the official unveiling of its Ivy Bridge-E microarchitecture. The Core i7-4960X Extreme Edition processor is the flagship product in Intel's initial line-up of Ivy Bridge-E based CPUs. The chip is manufactured using Intel's 22nm process node and features roughly 1.86 billion transistors, with a die size of approximately 257mm square. That's about 410 million fewer transistors and a 41 percent smaller die than Intel's previous gen Sandy Bridge-E CPU. The Ivy Bridge-E microarchitecture features up to 6 active execution cores that can each process two threads simultaneously, for support of a total of 12 threads, and they're designed for Intel's LGA 2011 socket. Intel's Core i7-4960X Extreme Edition processor has a base clock frequency of 3.6GHz with a maximum Turbo frequency of 4GHz. It is easily the fastest desktop processor Intel has released to date when tasked with highly-threaded workloads or when its massive amount of cache comes into play in applications like 3D rendering, ray tracing, and gaming. However, assuming similar clock speeds, Intel's newer Haswell microarchitecture employed in the recently released Core i7-4770K (and other 4th Gen Core processors) offers somewhat better single-core performance.

Urban Trial Freestyle is coming to Steam later this month, its developer has confirmed.
After a debut on PS3, PlayStation Vita and 3DS, Tate Multimedia's Trials-inspired title is now available to pre-order on Steam ahead of its release on September 18.
While its gameplay is strikingly similar to that of the Trials games, Urban Trial Freestyle differs in that it offers two different types of challenge - Time Trial and Stunt.
Time Trial tasks players with simply getting to the end of a stage, whereas Stunt Mode introduces a number of challenges within each level (such as highest jump, most flips and highest speed), with a total score for all challenges provided at the end of the run.
In our review of the PlayStation 3 version of Urban Trial Freestyle, we said: "Once you get over developer Tate Interactive's sheer lack of subtlety and judge the game on its own merit, the real surprise is that Urban Trial Freestyle is actually a decent game.
"Rather than a half-hearted rip-off of an already popular title, it's clear Tate has dedicated proper care and attention to this during its development, to the extent that we'd happily recommend it as an adequate (if not perfect) alternative for PS3 and Vita owners who can't get the Xbox-exclusive Trials games on their own systems."

The announcement of Steve Ballmer's impending retirement from Microsoft cast a spotlight on the company's transition to becoming a devices and services company. While it's unclear how progress toward this goal will be measured, the success model for the "devices" part of its quest is Apple. (Indeed, Apple, leading with iCloud, is seeking to diversify into more of a "devices and services" company itself.)
Apple's current revenue champions -- the iPhone and iPad -- are in categories that Microsoft recognized the potential of long before Apple's market entry. When the US smartphone market consisted of Microsoft, Palm and RIM, Windows Mobile had been powering smartphones -- and doing respectably in terms of US market share -- for years before Apple changed the game. Now, Windows Phone scrapes by with a few percentage points of the market. And the Tablet PCs that ran Windows a decade ago were introduced as the future of the notebook. While today's Windows tablets and convertibles are much thinner and lighter than they were back then, it's amazing to see how recalcitrant PC vendors have been in their design, with few pursuing pure slates and some using twist-hinges similar to those used in Tablet PCs.

Acer certainly takes the cake for most product announcements before IFA's even officially begun. In addition to outing a new smartphone, tablet, all-in-one (and a fewHaswell updates), the company is introducing a 27-inch WQHD display. The T272HUL's edge-to-edge, 2,560 x 1,440-pixel panel offers 10-point multi-touch, and the monitor's stand allows you to tilt the display up to 60 degrees. (It's also wall-mountable, if you're fancy like that.) A 2MP webcam and an integrated mic are also on board for video calls. Connectivity options include dual-link DVI, DisplayPort, HDMI and three USB 3.0 ports. The T272HUL will retail for €799 in September -- just don't look for this guy to hit the US.

Players will be able to get their hands on Peter Molyneux’s Godus from next week.
Studio 22cans is to be given a beta release for PC and Mac via Steam early access on September 13th. It will go on sale for £14.99.
Godus has been pitched a reinvention of the god genre game – a genre he himself helped establish with cult release Populous.
Remember that Godus will exist according to the whim of its god, Bryan Henderson, who in May was the lucky winnerof iOS experiment Curiosity: What’s Inside the Cube.
"For a long time I've been excited with how the game is evolving, I already feel there is nothing in the world like Godus,” Molyneux stated. “This is the type of game I have dreamt of making since first getting into the industry; having people play the beta and give us valuable feedback while doing so, makes that dream a reality."

£50 worth of in-game currency is to be given away with Nvidia graphics cards throughout the rest of the year.
Those who buy a GeForce 700M series equipped notebook or a GTX 650 series desktop GPU will get free in-game cash spread across Warframe, Marvel Heroes and Neverwinter.
The deal follows two similar giveaways the company recently revealed for the desktop market.
Nvidia last week revealed a partnership with Warner that sees copies of Batman: Arkham Origins come free with certain desktop GPUs. The week before a deal with Ubisoftfor free copies of Splinter Cell: Blacklist was confirmed.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has shot straight to the top of the boxed UK Full Price PC game chart, ahead of Football Manager 2013.
The online RPG game, from Square Enix, is a revised version of Final Fantasy XIV which originally launched in September 2010. After receiving a poor response, the publisher decided to go back to the drawing board and overhaul the title.
The result is a better game, but one that has so far been marred by online login issues.
A Realm Reborn - available for PS3 and PC - also entered the All Formats Top 40 at number three, where Saints Row IV is at number one while Splinter Cell: Blacklist sits at number two.
The Sims 3 remains in the PC Top Three, having spent more than four years in the chart. Football Manager 2013 moves up a couple of places to number two.
Here's the full PC Top Ten for the week ending August 31st, 2013:
1. Final Fantasy: A Realm Reborn (Square Enix)
2. Football Manager 2013 (Sega)
3. The Sims 3 (EA)
4. The Sims 3: Island Paradise (EA)
5. The Sims 3: University Life (EA)
6. Company of Heroes 2 (Sega)
7. Splinter Cell: Blacklist (Ubisoft)

Dragon Age: Inquisition will feature a familiar method for calling out actions for your party, BioWare's Mike Laidlaw and Mark Darrah revealed during a panel at PAX Prime. The game will include a "tactical view" function, which has players shifting seamlessly to a top-down view at any point above a battle, similar toDragon Age: Origins. With the game frozen in place, players can then issue commands for their companions at will before shifting back to the game's traditional over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective and resuming action.
The in-game action demonstrated during the panel took place in a location called Crestwood, which Darrah said is "bigger than all of Dragon Age 2 put together." The game's delay to fall 2014 allowed the developers to bringmultiple playable races back to the series, and it was revealed during the panel that both male and female horned Qunari characters would be among those playable races.

Being tired of assembling and disassembling parts/cables every time he went outside to fly his plane, [Elad] figured that he’d be better off building his own ground control station.
The core of the station is based on an old laptop with a broken screen he had laying around and (luckily) an older laptop screen he had found. As the latter only accepted LVDS, an adapter that could generate theses signals from the standard laptop’s VGA output was needed. [Elad] therefore disassembled his laptop and fit all the parts in a Pelican case he bought, as well as a lead-acid battery, a 12V to 19V stepup converter (to power the laptop), temperature/voltage/current sensors with their displays, 40mm fans, an AC/DC converter to charge the battery and finally a pico-UPS to allow uninterrupted use of the station when switching between power sources.
Because [Elad] didn’t have access to any machinery, PVC foam was used to maintain all the parts in place. Autonomy of his station is around 2.5hours on a single 12V 7Ah battery.

The latest iteration of Mechwarrior was crowdfunded (without Kickstarter) as a free-to-play first-person mech simulator. However, despite promises to the founders, the game has been shifted to a third-person arcade shooter and now the community is rioting. This followed a series of other unpopular decisions; the developers decided to sell an item for real money that had a significant impact on gameplay, crossing the line separating cosmetic/convenience items and 'pay-to-win.' Then they added a confusing game mechanic to limit its use, which had the unfortunate side effect of making some strategies completely useless. From the article: 'PGI’s community practices showcase a fundamental misunderstanding of both freemium development and community management. The developer has never had to deal with such a large player base before, and it has never had to deal with the strains of continuous development before. Rather, PGI seems to be handling Mechwarrior Online in much the same way they might a AAA game: by keeping quiet and only discussing its work in vague terms. ... Mechwarrior Online’s road to launch is a cautionary consumer tale, fraught with anger and betrayal. It shows how a company can take a fan base dedicated to an old IP and completely alienate it through lack of communication, unpopular features, and oathbreaking. It shows how players need to be cautious of supporting a project based solely on the IP backing it.'"

The story around AMD's upcoming Kaveri continues to evolve, but it's increasingly clear that AMD's 3rd generation APU won't be available for retail purchase this year. If you recall, AMD initially promised that Kaveri would be available during 2013 and even published roadmaps earlier in May that show the chip shipping in the beginning of the fourth quarter. What the company is saying now is that while Kaveri will ship to manufacturers in late 2013, it won't actually hit shelves until 2014. The reason Kaveri was late taping out, according to sources, was that AMD kept the chip back to put some additional polish on its performance. Unlike Piledriver, which we knew would be a minor tweak to the core Bulldozer architecture, Steamroller, Kaveri's core architecture, is the first serious overhaul to that hardware. That means it's AMD's first chance to really fix things. Piledriver delivered improved clock speeds and power consumption, but CPU efficiency barely budged compared to 'Dozer. Steamroller needs to deliver on that front."

Godus will hit Steam Access via PC and Mac for $19.99/£14.99/€18.99. 22Cans boss and Fable creator Peter Molyneux has said he's "proud and delighted" with his latest creation.
"For a long time I've been excited with how the game is evolving, I already feel there is nothing in the world like GODUS. This is the type of game I have dreamt of making since first getting into the industry; having people play the beta and give us valuable feedback while doing so, makes that dream a reality," said Molyneux.
A new trailer above offers an insight into what the beta will entail. New screenshots are also below.
Godus, a spiritual successor to Populous, puts players in the role of God in charge of their own world filled with settlers. "As you mould every aspect of your unique utopia, a civilization will blossom across your land and offer you their belief. The more followers that believe in you, the more powerful you will become," reads the PR.
"Whilst you are free to lose yourself in this tranquil experience, other gods reign outside of the ever-expanding reach of your influence. If you so wish, you may challenge other gods and their civilizations to epic multiplayer battles that involve hundreds of followers fighting in your name whilst you cast devastating god powers from the skies above. As you conquer more lands, your powers will grow allowing you to nurture the advancement of your own followers," it adds.
Godus successfully raised over £500k with its original Kickstarter fund in December 2012, beforestarting open-ended crowd funding in May this year.

DDR4 memory is finally in mass production, as Samsung Semiconductor announced it's churning out 4GB 4Gb (512MB) modules, based on "20nm-class" process technology. 32GB sticks like the ones shown above are headed for the premium server market, where Samsung claims their higher speeds (up to 2,667 Mb/s) make for higher performance and 30 percent less power consumption than DDR3. The company claims this is the world's smallest and highest performing 4Gb RAM chip, and we expect it won't stop there -- when Samsung showcased the technology in 2011 it claimed speeds could eventually reach as high as 4Gbps.
Update: It's four gigabits, not gigabytes -- thanks for the corrections, everyone.
