In what seems to be a continuing emergence of proof that videogames can benefit our psychological development, a new research article posted to open-access online science journal PLOS ONE claims that playing RTS games such as the fast-paced sci-fi classic Starcraft could boost players’ cognitive flexibility.
Describing the Blizzard game as ‘a sort of fast-paced chess on steroids’, one of the researchers states that a group of ‘non-gamer’ female participants demonstrated increased cognitive flexibility ‘as measured by a wide array of non-video gaming tasks’ after ‘playing an hour of Starcraft a day for almost two months.’ Cognitive flexibility is generally considered to be the ability to think about multiple concepts simultaneously, and to be able to adjust to new situations quickly.
According to the author of the post on Slashdot, the version of Starcraft played by the test group was ‘customized to be adaptive and remain challenging’ while ‘in-game behaviour was recorded to determine what aspects of Starcraft leads to the boost in flexibility.’ As a method of accurately measuring the changes, the study also employed a control group, who instead played the more sedate PC hit The Sims.
The study, entitled ‘Real-Time Strategy Game Training: Emergence of a Cognitive Flexibility Trait’ is available for free here.

The popular 2D fighter is currently available to pre-order with a 17 per cent discount. A closed beta will also commence on August 20 and end August 29, with applications open from now until August 18. Winners will be drawn randomly and notified on August 19.
Three characters available only as DLC for the console editions - Lori with the Power of Flames, NESTS Style Kyo and Mr. Karate - will feature in the Steam edition.
Meanwhile, the Steam edition will boast "vastly improved netcode", which will tailor the online experience according to the user's PC.
The official listing follows the appearance of a trailer last week, which featured gameplay footage as well as a logo containing the text 'The King of Fighters XIII Steam Edition'.
The game has been in the works for a while: references to King of Fighters XIII appeared in the Steam database back in March.

SimCity update 7.0 is scheduled to arrive in a city near you (that you created) in August, and it's bringing some traffic updates along for the ride. Update 7.0 adds the ability to raise and lower roads to build bridges and tunnels, as demonstrated by Lead Gameplay Scripter Guillaume Pierre.
The update also allows players to plant trees. This mechanic is inspired by a mod, and includes three tree types that grow roadside and four that can flourish anywhere, Pierre says in a series of tweets. The greenery joins asphalt-based operations improvements outlined by Software Engineer (and Captain?) Alexander Harkness in a recent SimCity blog post.

Windows PC gamers will be able to use the new Xbox One controller when official Microsoft support is introduced in 2014, the firm has told CVG.
Software is in the works that will not only add PC compatibility for the new controller, but will allow also allow it to work "seamlessly" with games designed to use the Xbox 360 pad.
But that requires substantial work due to vast architectural differences between the two controllers, as an MS spokesperson explained to CVG.
"As we've stated, the Xbox One controller, although it looks similar in many ways, shares no underlying technology with the current Xbox 360 controller. New wireless protocol, combined with the ability to work in 'wired' mode, and the addition of features like Impulse triggers, means that new software has to be written and optimized for the PC," said the rep.
"There is also some work that we need to do to make sure that existing PC games that support the Xbox 360 controller, will work with the Xbox One controller. While it seems trivial, it's actually quite a bit of dedicated work for all that to be seamless for the user," they went on to explain.
"We know people want to use the Xbox One controller on their PC, and we do too - we expect to have the functionality available in 2014."
CVG today published an interview with Xbox Accessories general manager Zulfi Alam, who discussed in detail the many improvements the firm has made to the next-gen controller and how it will improve gaming on Xbox One.
Xbox One will be available in 21 markets this November. The Xbox One price has been set at £425 / €499 / $499.

Alliance have won the Dota 2 world Championship in Seattle, Washington. The Swedish professional gaming outfit defeated Ukrainian team Na'Vi in a dramatic best-of-five grand final to win the $1.4 million first prize.Runners up Na'vi, who have now reached the grand final in each of the three The International tournaments, take home $632,000.Alliance, many people's favourites going into the tournament, emerged victorious following a stunning five-day undefeated run to grand finals.Last year's champions, Invictus Gaming, were eliminated in round four by TongFu. Third place went to Malaysian team Orange, who won just shy of $290,000.Alliance, led by captain Gustav "s4" Magnusson, won the first game of grand finals, but Na'Vi, winner of the 2011 tournament, pushed back, taking game two and game three, before Alliance levelled the series. The final, deciding game went to Alliance. The International's incredible $2.8 million prize pool was boosted by sales of the Compendium, Valve's interactive tournament companion. Through this, Valve's $1.6 million prize pool was pushed to over $2.8 million. It is estimated the International 3 grand finals were watched by over one million people online, taking into account the many streams of the event.

Last February a group of dedicated fans released a playable prologue to its impressive Starcraft 2 mod, Starcraft: Universe, which turns Blizzard's sci-fi opus into a third-person MMORPG ala World of Warcraft. At the time, developer Upheaval Arts was looking to raise money by asking for donations on its main site, but now it's launched a more official crowdfunding campaign in the form of a Kickstarter.
The developer is looking to accrue $80K for this hugely ambitious mod. While Starcraft: Universe will be free-to-play, those who donate to the cause will get extra goodies. $10 pledges award backers with a virtual pet in-game, while $15 comes with a digital soundtrack, and $35 grants backers access to all of the above plus a rare weapon, vehicle, and mystery box.If Upheaval reaches its Kickstarter goal of $80K it will release a multiplayer beta of the mod that comes with an opening and closing story-based act. If it reaches over $100K it will add a playable Zerg class, at $135 a MOBA-like battle arena will be implemented, and at $175 a middle act will be added to flesh out the storyline.Starcraft: Universe certainly looks impressive, given its humble beginnings when it was called World of Starcraft before Blizzard required that the developer change the name. Other than the title, Blizzard has been supportive of the fan-made project and it even considered the MMO mod's lead designer, Ryan Winzen, as a potential candidate to join the much loved studio. League of Legends developer Riot similarly sought Winzen out as a potential hire.Starcraft: Universe may be a mod to Starcraft 2 - meaning it won't work on its own - but all it requires is the free Starcraft 2: Starter Edition, which can be obtained here.So far Starcraft: Universe has raised $4346 of its $80K goal. It has 29 days to go before the 10th September deadline. See it in action in the pitch video below.

It's looking like Microsoft is planning to replace its underachieving Surface tablet with two new products, but it may need three to finally have success with the Surface. Three tablets would provide an entry point and an upgrade path. Multiple Surface RT models would help Windows RT survive OEM skepticism. Microsoft needs device fanfare to accompany Windows 8.1, and to coincide with enterprise hardware upgrades. If the company releases one of the models before the end of the year, the device would arrive in time not only for the holiday season, but also to cash in on user interest in Windows 8.1, which will be released later this fall. Surface devices released next year, meanwhile, could capitalize on enterprise hardware upgrades, which are expected to pick up as Windows XP's April 8, 2014 end-of-service date nears.

They may have a name so nebulous as to practically duck definition, but you’ll know one when you see one. MOBAs – multiplayer online battle arenas – are a peculiarity: a genre anecdotal evidence suggests many are daunted to try, but that nonetheless commands a larger userbase than any of the recent Call of Duties on 360, PS3 and PC combined.‘MOBA’ defines a subset of strategy games born from mods of Blizzard games Warcraft III and StarCraft, in which two teams of five face off on a near-symmetrical map. The subset has a few extra traditions: the map is split into lanes; players control heroes; armies of AI ‘creeps’ are produced without player input; and both teams have access to a ‘jungle’ area full of NPC enemies to be harvested for gold and experience points. The subset is growing at a staggering pace, outgrowing their realtime strategy roots and boasting user numbers that leave all games, in all genres on all platforms, in their wake. League Of Legends boasts more than 35 million players, with a peak concurrent player base of more than 5 million. Steam’s player base – that is, all of Steam, with its two-thousand-odd game catalogue – only just tips that figure.Dota 2, Valve’s own updated version of Defense Of The Ancients – itself the blueprint for modern MOBAs – looks set to ape LOL’s success. In its final days of invite-only beta testing the game was already the most played among Steam’s catalogue, with four times the players of second-place Team Fortress 2. Both games use a free-to-play model, with LOL unlocking each of its 100-plus heroes for a week at a time and charging a few pounds to keep them for regular play, while Dota 2 emphasises cosmetic enhancements for its heroes. When the player base is so vast, if only a small percentage of players pay it makes for a vast monetary return for developers. In an often-cynical industry, this return on investment is driving the development of the next generation of MOBAs. This year’s E3 was thick with the genre, with each iteration boasting only slight mechanical differentiation but a dramatic selection of themes. EA’s Dawngate aims to go back to what systems designer Alex Hutu describes as the “RTS roots of MOBAs”, introducing ‘economy nodes’ for capture. The Creative Assembly announced Total War Arena, a ten-vs-ten multiplayer game that sounds markedly MOBA-ish. Sins Of A Dark Age is a PvP MOBA-like from Ironclad Games, creator of space RTS Sins Of A Solar Empire. And the Warner Bros game Infinite Crisis is a MOBA set in the DC Comics universe, developed by MMORPG specialist Turbine.

Tablets and laptops will continue to become more closely aligned as ultrabooks increase in popularity, says distributor VIP Computers.
The company's notebooks product manager Mark Lynch told PCR in an interview: "I think traditional notebooks will get slimmer and more powerful as ultrabooks become more mainstream, but there will be a merger between tablet and notebook as more hybrid devices start to enter the market.
"Windows 8 was supposed to be the springboard for these touch/hybrid technologies, but only now have most manufacturers bought into the idea."
Lynch also talked up the growth of gaming laptops and said ultrabooks are enjoying good traction.
"Products like the ASUS Zenbook and MSI Dragon gaming notebooks are a world away from where we were 18 months ago," he added.
"Gaming is a huge growth area for us and we expect to see this ‘niche’ market really take off in Q3 and Q4. We’re also finally seeing better uptake of touch notebooks."
In terms of market challenges, VIP said: "Profitability and lack thereof on traditional notebooks. As the market is showing inconsistency, there are still a lot of ongoing price wars, which are stripping out the channel margin to clear inventory."

Total War Rome 2 is already the fastest pre-ordered game in the PC strategy franchise - and Sega is ensuring it will be a hit with an above-the-line marketing campaign.
The publisher recently invited games journalists to HBO's set of TV show Rome - in Rome itself - which has already garnered plenty of positive PR coverage.
Developer Creative Assembly's community team has also been working on a number of YouTube videos, as well as other assets via social media and forums.
In terms of the wider marketing drive, Sega has a host of activity to push pre-orders of Rome 2.
"Our ATL (above-the-line) marketing campaign is focused on hitting the wider strategy and PC gamer through heavy online display and search advertising in order to drive pre-orders, and we are looking to deliver over 14 million impressions in the UK with a variety of specialist media," Sega Europe Product Manager Sam Sadeghi (pictured) told PCR.
"We are also investigating more creative and informative ways of reaching out to the wider audience through a variety of interesting partnerships with broadcast media, which we hope we can share details on in the near future.
"We hope these partnerships can really get Total War out amongst the wider market and educate them that this is an historically accurate triple-A strategy game that they should be keeping an eye on."
Sadeghi says expectations for Rome II are "extremely high".
"PC retailers should be eagerly awaiting the September 3rd release date of Total War: Rome II, it is already our fastest pre-ordering Total War game of all time, and most recently won the Games Critic Award for Best Strategy Game of E3, amongst many other awards from individual media, which we are all extremely proud of," he added.
"Creative Assembly is now all hands on deck finishing up Total War: Rome II and making it the best game it can be, whilst Sega is working hard on driving awareness and marketing the product.
"We hope retail can see this and get behind the product in order to help make it a success sales-wise."

Sega has announced that owners of Total War: Rome 2 will receive early access to Creative Assembly's Total War: Arena.
Revealed at GDC in March, the studio's first free-to-play game will focus entirely on online multiplayer, mixing elements of RTS and MOBA gameplay.
Total War: Rome 2 buyers will get advanced Total War: Arena beta access, exclusive in-game bonuses and approximately $15 of in-game currency.
Sega says Total War: Arena will offer players the chance to "pitch history's greatest commanders and their armies against each other in massive team-based battles". A release window hasn't been announced.
Sega has confirmed a global Total War: Rome 2 release date of September 3, as well as a collector's edition of the game and pre-order bonuses.
Early purchasers will gain access to day-one DLC in the form of the Greek States Culture pack. It will feature three additional playable factions (Epirus, Athens and Sparta), taking the total to 12.
For more on the title, check out the latest Total War Rome 2 gameplay video, which sees the Macedonian faction taking on the might of Rome in a straight-up, open terrain skirmish match.

Sure, you've controlled minions and vast armies in the Civilization games, but here's your chance to actually be one of those underlings -- at least if you live in South Korea.Civilization Online, announced late last year,is an in-development MMORPG title set in the Civ universe, and Massively has learned some of its finer details from the folks at XL Games and 2K Games (the companies crafting it in CryEngine 3). At the start, players will join one of four societies, and all will have to work together to expand across the sandbox environment and progress through the ages.
Unlike most MMOs, there will come a time when one civilization achieves certain goals and effectively "wins," at which point the world will reset. Although combat is a part of the game, societies will also need to research, build and do various other things to become number one, much like the traditional strategy titles. Head to the source link for more info on the specifics, but don't get too excited -- Civilization Online will be launching first in Korea, and there are currently "no plans for a North American release." Not used to things being out of your control, are you?

A new free-to-play FIFA PC game based on the popular FIFA Ultimate Team mode will launch in Brazil and Russia - a move that will no doubt help curb piracy.
It's no surprise EA Sports is only launching downloadable title FIFA World in Brazil and Russia. Both territories are affected by video game piracy, with Nintendo specifically targeting Brazil earlier this year and reports such as thisdocumenting game piracy in Russia.
EA says it's targeting football fans and gamers who "are not console gamers" - they only require a broadband connection and an "average spec laptop computer or desktop PC".
But by launching a title that is free, it will also tap into the demographic of players in those countries that currently play games for free illegally. It's a smart move and will help the publisher make money from microtransactions, rather than charging a higher one-off fee for a new boxed game.
FIFA World will feature HD console gameplay, FIFA Ultimate Team and Seasons, over 30 officially licensed leagues, including the Russian Football Premier League, more than 600 clubs (and 19 officially licensed ones from Brazil).
A closed beta has launched over at www.easportsfifaworld.com, while the full game is scheduled for November 2013.
“Brazil and Russia are priority markets for EA Sports and especially our FIFA brand. We are excited to bring to these markets a custom-built, free-to-play PC experience developed around FIFA Ultimate Team,” said Matt Bilbey, Senior Vice President and Group General Manager at EA Sports.
FIFA Online 3, another free-to-play FIFA football game, is already live in Korea. It is number two in the Korean PC cafe rankings, according to Gametrics, and is also in development for Southeast Asia and mainland China.

Dell's Haswell-based Latitude laptops have been a tad on the chunky side so far, but the company is making amends by quietly launching its new Latitude 7000 series Ultrabooks. Both the 12.5-inch E7240 and 14-inch E7440 fit Intel's new low-voltage, 1.7GHz Core i3 CPU into an aluminum shell that's about 0.8 inch thick, yet meets military standards for resistance to dust, water and shock. They also support Dell'sWiGig Wireless Dock and WiDi. Neither will come close to the Precision M3800 in features, however. The two Latitudes both start with 4GB of RAM and a 1,366 x 768 display, and there's no way to upgrade the performance or screen quality. They're also expensive -- the E7240 is launching at a $1,169 sale price with a 128GB SSD inside, while the E7440 with a 320GB hard drive isn't much cheaper at $1,049. Still, we wouldn't complain (much) if an IT manager plunked either of these Ultrabooks on our desks.

The next generation of AMD PC graphics cards will be officially revealed on September 25th.
BSN reports that AMD’s 9000 flagship, codenamed Hawaii and part of its Volcanic Islands family of cards, will be shown off at a special press even tin Hawaii itself.
It will presumably carry the 9970 branding.
It is understood that the card will be launched in October and will likely be co-marketed with EA’s Battlefield 4. The GPU itself will be 28nm based and include a number of significant architectural changes over the current 7000 series
AMD’s other 9000 series cards will be announced at a later date. These include the performance Maui (9950?), the mainstream Ice Land (9850?) and the entry-level Tonga (9750?).
As well the 9970’s performance, AMD’s pricing plans will be of very high interest. Nvidia’s GTX Titan and GTX 780 currently rule the performance roost but are very expensive at around £800 and £550 respectively. AMD has been keen to take the price fight to Nvidia in recent times and many will hope it chooses to continue this tradition.
Speaking of which, AMD has also slashed the price of its current performance leader the HD 7990 which can today be had for as little as £590.90 – that’s a saving of the best part of £200 compared to earlier this week. Don’t forget, too, that AMD’s new beta drivers for the card have significantly improved its performance.
