Soccer coaching sim Football Manager 2013 is the best-selling entry in the series' history, going all the way back to the original Championship Manager line in the 1990s. Sports Interactive Director Miles Jacobsen announced the landmark on Facebook, noting the game had scored over a million sales since its launch in November 2012.
As this Euro soccer season nears its end, fans are already looking ahead to the next one, and the next Football Manager. On the back of the latest entry bulging net sales, we now know Football Manager 2014 will take to the pitch on Linux.
Jacobsen revealed FM2014 is confirmed to come to PC, Mac and Linux. It'll be a crossplay game, meaning any purchase enables play on all three platforms. So now SI's seemingly unstoppable black hole of time has one more way to claim lives - you have been warned.

Mopping up after malicious software can land you in a browser quagmire full of sketchy search engines, toolbars or worse. Google's latest version of its open-sourceChromium browser now has a remedy for much of that thanks to a 'reset profile' setting discovered by code tinkerer François Beaufort. You can revert the defaults for search, homepage, content settings and cookies all in one go, while also disablingextensions. Since Chromium features often pop up later in Chrome, that means your life may soon be easier after your, ahem, friend has a brush with the dark side of the internet.

In a Chinese invitation we received earlier today, Foxconn Technology Group and Mozilla confirmed an upcoming press conference that will detail and make theirFirefox OS partnership official. The event will take place in Taipei next Monday (just a few days before Computex truly kicks off), and it'll see Mozilla welcome the 19th partner to its Firefox OS alliance. There isn't much meat in the email, though we did spot a little hint in the rundown that says one or more new Firefox OS products will be displayed. Whatever they may be, we shall keep an eye out for them as soon as we land in Terry Gou's back garden next week.

EA has announced the SimCity Amusement Park expansion that leaked earlier this month. It's out on 28th May on Origin. EA is yet to announce the price. The Amusement Park is a tourist attraction similar to casinos and landmarks, gameplay scripter Jason Halvorson explained. "Running a successful Amusement Park is almost a mini-game in itself."Your city will earn money from the Amusement Park by having guests go on rides and buying goods from concession stands, as you'd expect. But unlike landmarks and casinos, you need to get your park guests to rides and stands in the most efficient way possible. "It means you're really going to need to pay attention to the layout of your park in order to maximise profits," Halvorson said. You need to place one of three main gates for your park to get going. Each comes with one ride, one concession stand and a stub of road. There are a number of modules. Signs attract more tourists to your park as well to your entire city. Main attractions are the rides, which include roller coasters, Ferris wheels and go-karts. Secondary attractions are cheaper than main attractions, have a lower maintenance cost but don't satisfy as many riders and don't add as much attraction. They include the drop tower and carousel. Concession stands are the cheapest attractions and have a small capacity, but churn through guests quickly.Of most interest is the mini train station, which lets you customise the rail like a road. The rail can go through tunnels and over bridges. You can connect two train stations together to form a transport system for guests. The modules become available as you increase your daily profit and upgrade your park to higher levels.

Last month the two brothers at Greenheart Games implemented a brilliant bug into pirated copies of their game, Game Dev Story, that made it so anyone playing a cracked copy would unwittingly fail due to piracy. Now Greenheart has explained on its blog that its game was successful in spite of a majority of its copies being pirated. "I'm happy to report that my brother Daniel can finally transition out of his full time job to focus exclusively on Greenheart Games," wrote Greenheart's Patrick Klug. "The support from paying players (who are still outnumbered by pirates) is what makes all this possible."Klug went on to explain its cheeky anti-piracy stunt brought in an influx of players and helped get Game Dev Tycoon greenlit on Steam.
That being said, the brothers Klug have been very critical of their own work and would like to improve their popular sim. "While it's clear that many players enjoy their experience with Game Dev Tycoon, we also saw some frustrations and have to admit that Game Dev Tycoon could use some more polish. From the feedback we received and from watching players play the game we can see that there are some flaws which hinder the game's potential and lessen the game experience."Greenheart was adamant that it didn't want Game Dev Tycoon to be a simple grindfest, and it should require more tactical thinking than pure time-killing brute force. "In Game Dev Tycoon you can create a good game from the start but you can also create a bad game with a great team. We like this and want to keep it that way but admittedly the balance is sometimes off. The problem is that the game is tuned for some play styles but not for others," Greenheart explained. "The game can be too punishing at certain stages and, what's worse, it doesn't give you enough feedback to be able to adapt your strategy. Sure, you could play following a wiki with a calculator at hand but we never wanted the game to be played this way."The developer would like to release an updated version of the game when it comes to Steam in August. "Don't expect any major additions (that's what a sequel is for!) but you can expect some improvements/small additions and a more polished game experience," Greenheart added. While Greenheart can't generate Steam keys until its closer to release, players can purchase Game Dev Tycoon from the developer's official site, and they'll be sent free Steam keys once the game is ready to go up on Valve's distribution service.

On the face of it, Blizzard has been slow to adapt to the rise of mobile and free-to-play, just like parent company Activision. Fellow industry leaders EA and Ubisoft moved quickly to embrace emerging platforms and business models, but for Activision Blizzard ‘mobile’ often meant companion apps for World Of Warcraft and matchmaking platform Battlenet, or the now free Call Of Duty subscription service, Elite. Hearthstone: Heroes Of Warcraft, a collectible card game set in the World Of Warcraft universe, is Blizzard’s first free-to-play game. Soon after its launch on PC and Mac, it will become its first iPad game, too.Yet Hearthstone should not be seen as a rushed bid to hitch the studio to two lucrative bandwagons. It’s been in development for over two years, and is being made by Team 5, a new 15-strong unit of multidisciplinary staff assembled specifically to make games like this. Its mandate is to make smaller projects that can be iterated on rapidly and released in distinctly un-Blizzard-like time frames. CEO Rob Pardo promised his PAX East audience that when he said the game would be on iPad soon after PC and Mac, he meant this year, not ‘Blizzard soon’. Pardo made it quite clear that his studio’s love of collectible card games predated the rise of mobile and free-to-play, his claim backed up by some grainy photos of badly coiffed developers sitting cross-legged on office floors playing Magic: The Gathering.“When we’re making a game, we try to figure out what the business model is and the platforms are after we know what kind of game we’re making,” Eric Dodds, the game’s lead designer, tells us. “We’re excited about card games, so free-to-play makes a lot of sense. One of the things we wanted to capture with this game is for you to feel like you’re touching the cards, and of course, for an iPad game that makes a whole lot of sense.”Both the early iPad build shown behind closed doors at PAX and the PC version playable on the show floor have a tactile quality to them, meaning everything looks, sounds and feels like it has weight. Cards aren’t just played, they’re slammed down, kicking up little dust clouds as they land. Send a card out to attack another and it moves towards its target, pausing above it for a split second before lunging in to strike, the resulting damage counters enveloped by cartoonish hit sparks. Move a card from left to right before playing it and it tilts slightly; it’s barely noticeable, but adds to the sense that you’re playing with a real, physical deck.

Windows users have long wanted the Start button to make a triumphant return to Windows 8. Now, it appears Microsoft has granted their wish, sort of.
Microsoft has announced the release of two new mice, which lone behold, contain a Windows button. Yes, an actual, physical Windows button.
Whilst the Sculpt Comfort Mouse sports a large Windows 8-esque blue button on its side, the travel-sized Sculpt Mobile Mouse incorporates the trademark button just below its mouse wheel.

Acer's C7 Chromebook is the cheapest way to get in on Google's cloud-OS party. But, it still ships a 320GB 5,400RPM drive. Truth be told, such a large amount of local storage is counter to the whole idea of Chrome OS -- not to mention that the slow spin introduces a certain amount of unwelcome lag. Thankfully the bargain-basement $199 laptop is about to get an SSD makeover, according to a listing at Best Buy. The official specs at the Google Play store still list the standard hard drive, but the big box shop has a model featuring 16GB of solid state storage. The updated C7 keeps the same affordable price point, though we have no idea when it might start shipping. Best Buy lists the Chromebook simply as "coming soon," with no estimated delivery date. From what we can see there are no other changes to the machine, so if you weren't a fan of the cheap construction before, don't expect that to change.

When NVIDIA released the GTX Titan in February, it was the first consumer graphics card to use the GK110 GPU from NVIDIA that included 2,688 CUDA cores / shaders and an impressive 6GB of GDDR5 frame buffer. However, it also had a $1000 price tag that was the limiting specification for most gamers. With today's release of the GeForce GTX 780 they are hoping to utilize more of the GK110 silicon they are getting from TSMC while offering a lower cost version with performance within spitting range. The GTX 780 uses the same chip but disables a handful more compute units to bring the shader count down to 2,304 — still an impressive bump over the 1,536 of the GTX 680. The 384-bit memory bus remains though the frame buffer is cut in half to 3GB. Overall, the performance of the new card sits squarely between the GTX Titan ($1000) and AMD's Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition ($439), just like its price. The question is, are PC gamers willing to shell out $220+ dollars MORE than the HD 7970 for somewhere in the range of 15-25% more performance?"As you might guess, there's similarly spec-laden coverage at lots of other sites, including Tom's, ExtremeTech, and TechReport.HotHardware, too.

Four decades ago the Ethernet protocol made its debut as a way to connect machines in close proximity, today it is the networking layer two protocol of choice for local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs) and everything in between. For many people Ethernet is merely the RJ45 jack on the back of a laptop, but its relative ubiquity and simplicity belie what Ethernet has done for the networking industry and in turn for consumers and enterprises. Ethernet has in the space of 40 years gone from a technology that many in the industry viewed as something not fit for high bandwidth, dependable communications to the default data link protocol."

Nvidia has finally lifted the lid on its latest range of graphics cards, announcing the release of the GeForce GTX 780.
The GPU maker confirmed the release of the card in the UK, which is available now for £549.
With a base clock speed of 863Mhz, which can be pushed up to 900Mhz, the GTX 780 also comes with 3GB of DDR5 RAM at a speed of 6Gbps. As for connectivity, the card sports two DL-DVI slots, one Displayport and a single HDMI connection.
Performance-wise, the GTX780 offers a huge 70 per cent boost over Nvidia's GTX 580, in addition to a sizeable 15-20 per cent upgrade on its predecessor, the GTX 680.
Meanwhile, the 780 beats out rival card maker AMD's flagship 7970 card by around a 20 - 65 per cent upgrade.
Third-party renditions of the card are expected to be announced shortly.

HP has unveiled a 20-inch PC designed to be easily transported around the home or office.
The Envy Rove 20 can be unplugged and moved around cable-free, thanks to a battery with four hours of life from each charge. This effectively turns the Rove 20 into a giant tablet.
At 11.86 pounds, it’s not the lightest gadget to lug around and you probably wouldn't want to carry it on the bus, but it shouldn't cause too much hassle when moving it between rooms, plus it's got a hinge which can be activated by pressing a button, making screen adjustments a little easier.
One feature that HP is keen to focus on is that the Rove 20 can lie nearly flat, allowing the family to gather round and use it as an electronic board game-type machine. The device comes pre-installed with games such as Monopoly, Jigsaw Wars and Disney Fairies.
HP’s Consumer PCs and Solutions Senior VP and General Counsel Ron Coughlin said: “Customers are looking for mobility and flexibility in their computing devices to give families new ways to bring generations together. HP is evolving to meet our customers’ needs by designing next-generation form factors, like the Rove mobile All-in-One PC, which will enable people to connect, share and create in ways they never imagined.”
The Envy Rove 20 features a Haswell chip, comes with 1TB or storage as well as an 8GB SSD, includes WiFi and WiDi, and runs Windows 8.
The device is expected to ship sometime in July. HP hasn’t officially confirmed pricing yet, but it is expected to cost around $1,000.

etherRealm Studios' latest Mortal Kombat title is coming to PC, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced.
Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition will be available for PC digitally on July 3, with a retail release following on August 2."Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition for PC [features] all of the downloadable content (DLC), including intrepid warriors Skarlet, Kenshi and Rain, as well as the notorious dream stalker Freddy Krueger. NetherRealm's game has been ported to PC by High Voltage Software, which recently developed the HD re-release of Hideo Kojima's Zone of the Enders.
We said in our 2011 Mortal Kombat review: "Not the best or the deepest, but extremely likeable, gory amusement."
Last year, the series' longstanding creative director Ed Boon saidNetherRealm must add significant new ideas to the next Mortal Kombat game.
Earlier this week, Warner released a new Batman: Arkham Origins trailer. It also revealed that DC Comics supervillain Deathstroke will be a playable character in the game's challenge mode.

The crazy kids at Fogbeam Labs have a new blog post positing that there is a trend towards advanced projects in NLP, Information Retrieval, Big Data and the Semantic Web moving to the Apache Software Foundation. Considering that Apache UIMA is a key component of IBM Watson, is it wrong to believe that the organization behind Hadoop, OpenNLP, Jena, Stanbol, Mahout and Lucenewill ultimately be the home of a real 'Star Trek Computer'? Quoting: 'When we talk about how the Star Trek computer had “access to all the data in the known Universe”, what we really mean is that it had access to something like the Semantic Web and the Linked Data cloud. Jena provides a programmatic environment for RDF, RDFS and OWL, SPARQL and includes a rule-based inference engine. ... In addition to supporting the natural language interface with the system, OpenNLP is a powerful library for extracting meaning (semantics) from unstructured data - specifically textual data in an unstructured (or semi structured) format. An example of unstructured data would be the blog post, an article in the New York Times, or a Wikipedia article. OpenNLP combined with Jena and other technologies, allows “The computer” to “read” the Web, extracting meaningful data and saving valid assertions for later use.'"Speaking of the Star Trek computer, I'm continually disappointed that neither Siri nor Google Now can talk to me in Majel Barrett's voice.

FIFA 14 is built using a brand new next-gen game engine… which the PC version won’t use.
The football game will on PS4 and Xbox One use the fancy new EA Sports Ignite engine which delivers a host of improvements involving opponent AI and animation.
But despite the fact that the new generation of consoles basically ARE PCs, EA will not be using the EA Sports Ignite engine on the platform.
"Clarification for the PC related questions earlier," EA Sports FIFA community manager Rob Hodson confirmed on Twitter. "EA Sports Ignite will power FIFA 14 on Xbox One and PS4, not PC."
FIFA 13 marked an important year for PC gamers because it was the first time that development of the PC build had caught up with consoles and brought it into line with Xbox 360 and PS3. That this trend won’t continue this year is a crushing disappointment to PC gamers.
Fingers crossed for FIFA 15.
