Today AMD has officially unveiled its long-awaited dual-GPU Tahiti-based card. Codenamed Malta, the $1,000 Radeon HD 7990 is positioned directly against Nvidia's dual-GPU GeForce GTX 690. Tom's Hardware posted the performance data. Because Fraps measures data at a stage in the pipeline before what is actually seen on-screen, they employed Nvidia's FCAT (Frame Capture Analysis Tools). ... The 690 is beating AMD's new flagship in six out of eight titles. ... AMD is bundling eight titles with every 7990, including: BioShock Infinite, Tomb Raider, Crysis 3, Far Cry 3, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, Hitman: Absolution, Sleeping Dogs, andDeus Ex: Human Revolution."OpenGL performance doesn't seem too off from the competing Nvidia card, but the 7990 dominates when using OpenCL. Power management looks decent: ~375W at full load, but a nice 20W at idle (it can turn the second chip off entirely when unneeded). PC Perspective claims there are issues with Crossfire and an un-synchronized rendering pipeline that leads to a slight decrease in the actual frame rate, but that should be fixed by an updated Catalyst this summer.

Microsoft has announced it will launch its Surface Pro tablet in the UK next month, along with 18 additional countries, and five more in June.
Within a post on the firm's official Surface blog, Microsoft confirmed the Surface Pro will launch in the UK in May, along with Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Meanwhile, the device will hit Korea, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore and Thailand in June, making the Surface Pro a global product.
Whilst the entry-level Surface RT device – which runs Microsoft's scaled down version of Windows – is already on sale within the UK, the Surface Pro offers the full version of Windows 8, along with improved system specs.
Currently, the Surface Pro is only available in the US, Canada and China, but Microsoft is hoping to generate additional demand for the device by launching it within a further 24 countries.
Demand for the Surface Pro has been high, and Microsoft has on occasion struggled to meet the strong demand for the 128GB Surface with the firm's online store running out of stock.
However, Microsoft will be hoping that the strong demand experienced for the Surface Pro in existing markets will translate to the UK and these newly announced countries.

Ofcom has issued a warning to UK web surfers after issuing a report, which found Brits are spending more time online.
The report found that the average user now surfs the web for 16.8 hours per week, visiting around 19 different websites – a sharp increase over the average of 15.1 hours found in 2011.
As more Brits spend their time surfing the web, Ofcom is working to advise users of their internet use and the ways they can remain safe, after the regulators report uncovered some worrying habits.
The report found that 55 per cent of participants admitted to using the same password for the majority, if not all of the websites they visit. However, more concerning is the fact that 26 per cent of participants confessed to using their birthday as their password.
In an age where Brits are increasingly using the internet within their daily lives, particularly for sensitive tasks such as banking, shopping and other activities which involve personal information, the regulator wants to emphasise the importance of keeping such data safe.
One particular age group being targeted by Ofcom is those web users aged between 55 and 64, which has seen the most growth amongst all age groups.
Social networking has seen particular growth amongst older generations, with 35 per cent of participants in the 55 - 64 now owning a Facebook account, up from the 24 per cent in 2011.
Ofcom summarised the report, stating the number of Brits surfing the web continues to rise, despite the associated risks.
"While our research shows that some people are still taking security risks online, they clearly feel these are outweighed by the benefits that the internet brings," said James Thickett, director of research, Ofcom.

In the wake of increasing threats to consumers’ assets online, security specialist Kaspersky Lab has launched PURE 3.0 Total Security to safeguard users’ identities, passwords and money.
Kaspersky conducted research through YouGov, which discovered that 38 per cent of consumers use the same password for more than one online account, increasing the likelihood of a cybercriminal gaining access to multiple accounts.
Also, data from Kaspersky Lab shows that more than 5,000 websites are compromised daily, including popular banking and shopping websites, while 70 per cent of phishing emails trick victims into visiting cleverly-forged websites for the sole purpose of stealing their bank credentials.
Consequently, the firm developed Kaspersky PURE 3.0 Total Security, which aims to safeguard all things stored and exchanged on PCs.
The new product from Kaspersky boasts features including online banking and shopping security, password management and online backup, all of which can be accessed via an easy-to-use interface with rapid access to key features and management from the main window.
“The internet has become a key element of our lives today and this has increased the potential 'attack surface' for cybercriminals. As increasing numbers of us bank, shop and socialise online, the number and sophistication of attacks from cybercriminals also rises, therefore we all need to make sure we are taking the necessary precautions to stay protected”, says David Emm, senior security researcher, Kaspersky Lab.
“By incorporating award-winning technologies such as Safe Money and Automatic Exploit Prevention into Kaspersky PURE 3.0, we sought to develop a product that not only protects a PC but the digital identity and online assets of its user, whether that be bank details or personal photos.”
New features include Safe Money – which verifies that banking, payment and shopping sites are genuine, and Password Sync – which enables users to keep multiple passwords in a secure vault that can be synced across multiple computers with PURE 3.0.
There’s also Online Backup, Automatic Exploit Prevention, Parental Controls, Home Network Control, and more, all working to protect users.
Kaspersky PURE 3.0 Total Security is available now. One-year licences can be purchased for £59.99 for a single user licence and £89.99 for a three- user licence.

Microsoft's Surface Pro and RT are striking out to more far flung corners of the globe. Redmond just announced this morning that its two Windows 8 tablets will be made available to even more markets, with the Surface RT being the first to branch out, shipping on April 25th to Malaysia and then soon after to Mexico, Korea and Thailand by end May / early June. When it finally hits that early summer release window, the Surface RT will be accessible to a total of 29 markets globally. As for its older sibling, the feature-packed Surface Pro, that angular slate's set to expand beyond its currentlimited availability (U.S., Canada and China) to 19 additional markets across Europe (including the UK), Asia and Oceania by the end of next month. And if you've been searching high and low for a 128GB Surface Pro to no avail, chin up, as Microsoft's taken note of your demand and is working with retailers to keep that model "consistently in stock."

Following Microsoft's confirmation it would look to release smaller Windows 8 powered tablets, images leaked online appear to reveal the first.
Tech site Minmachines first published the images, which show off an eight-inch Acer tablet, labelled as the Iconia W3.
Shown to be running Windows 8, the Iconia W3 is said to sport a dual-core Atom Z2760 processor with hyper-threading, clocked at 1.8GHz. Hardly the most powerful device on the market, but the device would seemingly value size over performance.
Additional specs of the W3 are said to include 2GB of RAM, dual camera, speaker set-up and ports for microUSB and microSDHC.
Whilst the Iconia W3 is yet to be confirmed, the fact that Acer has since asked Minimachines to take down the image would certainly indicate its existence.

During a recent trip to an eye doctor, I noticed that she was still using Windows XP. After I suggested that she might need to upgrade soon, she said she couldn't because she couldn't afford the $10,000 fee involved with the specialty medical software that has been upgraded for Windows 7. Software written for medical professionals is not like mass market software. They have a limited market and can't make back their money in volume because there isn't the volume for an eye doctor's database product like there is for Office or Quicken. With many expecting Microsoft's upcoming end-of-support for XP to cause a security nightmare of unsupported Windows devices in the wild, it seems a good time to ask how many users may fall into the category of wanting an upgrade, but being priced out by expensive but necessary third-party software. More importantly, can anything be done about it?

A few hours after Sega bought Relic Entertainment, the Vancouver, Canada real-time strategy specialist whose fate had been up for sale thousands of miles away at the THQ bankruptcy session in Delaware, Company of Heroes 2's designers got back to work.Game director Quinn Duffy and the rest of the development team were in the middle of what's called a "finaling exercise". Amid the uncertainty around the future of the studio, amid the chaos of the collapse of its publisher and owner THQ, all Relic could do was assume Company of Heroes 2 would be released. Indeed it had to - and soon.It had been one hell of a busy Christmas. THQ's high-profile demise had been sniping at the developers' attention for months as Relic battled to get Company of Heroes 2 ready for release before the end of March 2013. "There was a strange mix of feelings on the team because we were all a little bit nervous about what was potentially going to happen," Duffy tells Eurogamer in the basement of a fancy Covent Garden venue converted into a make-believe World War 2 bunker by Sega's marketing and PR teams."We had a sense it was going that way. We didn't know what the end result was going to be. We knew there was going to be a big transition or change of one kind or another. Either THQ was going to resurrect in a completely different form, or we were going to end up somewhere else.""You can't help not think about it," says lead designer Jason Lee. "We're all professionals, so in the end you have to block that out and grind at it. But it does affect your work. You don't know if the project is going to take off."

Microsoft has repeatedly told us that we'll see smaller Windows 8 tablets, but all that talk has amounted to precious little walk. If the latest rumor is accurate, though, Acer might be the first to take action: French site Minimachines claims to have images and details of the Iconia W3, which could be the first 8-inch tablet on Microsoft's newer platform. The slate wouldn't be a barnstormer with a 1.8GHz Atom Z2760 and 2GB of RAM, but performance also wouldn't be its selling point -- the W3 would be small enough to fit in one hand while carrying the full software support of a PC. It will reportedly include front and rear cameras as well as a possible microSDHC slot, and the accessories we see in the purported leak involve both a tiny keyboard dock and a cover that doubles as a kickstand. We don't know if there's any truth to claims of a launch around the back to school season in September, although that would certainly be appropriate timing for what could be a welcome backpack companion.

You don’t have to search very long before you find someone raving about the Retina display used in Apple iPads. We’re not going to disagree. These 9.7″ panels pack in a whopping 2048×1536 resolution and the color is fantastic. But we were surprised to hear you can get one of these for a meager $55. That’s how [Andrzej] sourced the part when he set out to connect a Retina display to a regular PC.
It turns out this isn’t all that hard. The display uses the eDisplayPort protocol. This is an extension of DisplayPort which is an alternative to LVDS that is gaining a foothold in the industry. An external DisplayPort adapter can already be found on higher-end laptops, which means this should be a snap to use as an external display if the signals can be routed correctly.
To do this, [Andrzej] figured out how to order the PCB connector for the panel’s ribbon cable. He then etched and populated his own board which serves as an adapter for a DisplayPort cable. It even powers the panel, but an external 20V supply is necessary for the backlight.

While news stories have focused on the upcoming jump from 5Gbps to 10Gbps for USB SuperSpeed, less talked about has been the fact that it will also increase charging capabilities from 10W to 100W, meaning you'll be able to charge your laptop, monitor, even a television using a USB cord. Along with USB, the Thunderbolt peripheral interconnect will also be doubling it throughput thanks to a new controller chip, in its case from 10Gbps to 20Gbps. As with USB SuperSpeed, Thunderbolt's bandwidth increase is considered an evolutionary step, but the power transfer increase is being considered revolutionary, according to Jeff Ravencraft, president of the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF). 'This is going to change the way computers, peripheral devices and even HDTVs will not only consume but deliver power,' Ravencraft said. 'You can have an HDTV with a USB hub built into it where not only can you exchange data and audio/video, but you can charge all your devices from it.'"

EA will release its first big SimCity patch tonight around 9pm to fix a number of the game’s most complained-about bugs.
The patch will fix a number of issues including an unexplained fluctuation of tourists, random air pollution, and too many random disasters. There will also be some new content, including data maps and mayors mansion.
One of the biggest criticisms about SImCity has been its online-only gameplay. Many were hoping for an offline mode in the update, but it seems they won’t be getting one.
SimCity will go offline for around two hours from 9pm tonight while the update takes place.

Graphics card manufacturer Nvidia has unleashed the latest of its 'Gear up, game on' hardware bundles, this time offering gamers a copy of Metro: Last Light.
Consumers who buy the firm's GTX 660 card and above will receive the title as part of the bundle – a fitting choice for the promotion given its intense hardware requirements and the high number of players who may be required to upgrade their system in order to play the title.
Whilst Last Light's minimum requirements are largely accessible, users looking to play the game on optimum settings will likely need to fork out for a new graphics card given its demand for high-end hardware, particularly Nvidia's newly released TITAN GPU, which currently reigns supreme as the world's fastest single card.
“We are very proud of this cooperation with NVIDIA, as this is a great opportunity to pool our strengths,” said Menno van der Bil, International Commercial Director at publisher Deep Silver.
“Metro: Last Light stands out with brilliant graphics, and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 600 Series is well prepared to display them in the best way possible.”
“With Metro 2033, 4A Games already proved that we have the expertise to create exceptional computer games. With Metro: Last Light, we are pushing the limits to an even higher level,” said Dean Sharpe, Executive Producer for Metro: Last Light.
“We are delighted that NVIDIA has chosen us as a partner, as this verifies the game’s position as a graphics benchmark for the next generation.”
Metro: Last Light is set to release in the UK on May 17th.

Selling PCs is getting harder. A big chunk of what we use our PCs for – computer stuff like photo sharing, music discovery and communication (email, Twitter, Facebook) – has been eroded by smarter phones and tablets that do the job faster, better and in more places.
PC games have always been a big part of why consumers need to keep upgrading and buying new computers. Games drive value in the PC hardware market as they push system performance. Right now, PC games are super exciting because the console market is near the end of a cycle with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 looking decidedly long in the tooth.
PC gamers are true power users when it comes to systems. PC gamers love better mice, keyboards, headsets, steering wheels and other peripherals. And in terms of software sales, games have a faster turnover than utilities.
PC retail channels hardly sell any PC games. That’s not because folk aren’t buying PC games. The bust in selling boxed PC games to core gamers has been replaced by a boom – with this audience getting their games delivered digitally by retailers like Steam and Green Man Gaming.
For PC retailers this presents a problem and an opportunity.
The problem is that PC games won’t explain themselves in your stores. You can’t rely on a wall of shrink wrapped software boxes with exciting images to evangelise PC gaming, or for software publishers to cough up for in-store promotional materials. PC games publishers also do a really bad job of explaining what type of PC you need to run their game – offering just an incomprehensible list of system requirements.
PC games have ended up invisible at retail. This presents an opportunity for store teams to better understand the biggest games on PC and what systems will make a game run okay... and which will make a game fly. It’s not a huge education job – spend time understanding some of the world’s biggest games, like League of Legends, World of Warcraft and Minecraft and be ready to offer a gaming context about what gear is right for what type of user. A conversation that focuses on benefits “Will-this-PC-run-that-game” has to be better than just trying to answer a feature question like “Dual-core-or- quad-core”.

James Woodcock has today released his enhanced music for classic point & click adventure game Touché: The Adventures of the Fifth Musketeer, as part of his 'ScummVM Music Enhancement Project'.
By adding the external digital music files provided for free by James and with our ScummVM software, users can enjoy the updated soundtrack within the actual title as it is played.
Using modern MIDI hardware, James edits the original MIDI information and records them as external digital music files. Developers of ScummVM then add code so the newly created files will work within the titles.
"ScummVM has always inspired my involvement and although I am not a programmer, I hope my ScummVM Music Enhancement Project adds a little extra enjoyment to users of this fine point and click adventure software." says James Woodcock, creator of the enhanced soundtrack.
James has previously released other enhanced soundtracks for titles including:
- Beneath A Steel Sky
- Discworld
- Inherit the Earth
- Simon the Sorcerer
- The 7th Guest
