The arrival of next-gen consoles could well prove to be a double-edged sword for PC owners used to enjoying the best gameplay experience. On the one hand, it's extremely good news: developers no longer need to create engines for multiple hardware types with little common ground - console and PC development will all be based on x86 computer architecture. By extension, the need to use brute-force processing power to overcome unoptimised PC ports will hopefully become less of an issue, leaving gamers to enjoy the more positive aspects of the platform - upgrading, customising, shaping the experience towards their own requirements.
On the flipside, PlayStation 4 in particular offers a substantial challenge to the PC as the top-end gaming platform - a state of affairs that may surprise many. Sony's new console has often been described as a mid-range gaming PC in terms of its overall technological make-up. Rip apart the various components and the claims have some merit, but with the benefits of a closed box design and a unified memory set-up, the new console has certain qualities that could even give high-end PC rigs a run for their money.
All of which leads us to the point of this article. If you own a PC now, what upgrade paths are available to keep your rig competitive with the next generation of consoles? And if you're planning to buy or build your own gaming PC, what components should you choose to ensure that your hardware provides an excellent experience in line with the capabilities of the next Xbox and PlayStation 4?
[h=2]Buying new - choosing a platform[/h][h=2]Should you upgrade your CPU?[/h]
This Crysis 3 frame-rate comparison gives you some idea of how CPU performance scales across generations, and how Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad and its AMD contemporaries are finally running out of steam after a great innings. Generally speaking, CPUs tend to have more longevity than graphics cards.
What is also noticeable is that even modern day dual-core Intel and quad-core AMD chips are starting to look a little weak, something we can attest to when we revisit our £300 Digital Foundry PC, where achieving 60FPS gameplay is becoming an ever-increasing challenge (1080p30 is much, much easier to attain with good quality settings). Now is a good time to invest in CPU technology, as performance on upcoming replacements is taking a back seat in favour of power efficiency - both AMD and Intel are only suggesting 5-15 per cent performance gains in their next line of CPUs.
The Intel Core i5 3570K and the AMD FX-8300 remain the best two choices in terms of power vs. price-point. The Intel chip is faster on most existing games, and it's more power-efficient - as well as being an overclocking monster. However, the AMD chip's eight-core layout is a good match for next-gen console and its prowess in highly threaded applications is already coming to the fore in key titles whose engines are designed with next-gen console partly in mind.
If you're using an older platform, consider motherboard and CPU choice carefully. Overclocking isn't particularly daunting these days but it relies upon buying an unlocked processor, a good quality motherboard and a decent after-market heat sink and fan.
Intel or AMD? Since the arrival of Intel's Core 2 Duo processors, AMD has struggled to remain competitive, remaining in the game by offering its higher-tier parts at very competitive prices. In recent years it has bet the farm on multi-core performance - its latest flagship, the FX-8350, offers eight cores at 4.0GHz with no overclocking restrictions, while its Intel competitor - the Core i5 3570K - offers four cores at 3.4GHz. In a world where single-core performance still dominates, the Intel offering is still considered the better buy - it's certainly more power-efficient and has more overclocking potential.
We approached a number of developers on and off the record - each of whom has helped to ship multi-million-selling, triple-A titles - asking them whether an Intel or AMD processor offers the best way to future-proof a games PC built in the here and now. Bearing in mind the historical dominance Intel has enjoyed, the results are intriguing - all of them opted for the FX-8350 over the current default enthusiast's choice, the Core i5 3570K.
Perhaps it's not entirely surprising - Crytek's Crysis 3 is a forward-looking game in many ways, and as these CPU tests by respected German site PC Games Hardware demonstrate, not only does the FX-8350 outperform the i5, it also offers up an additional, minor margin of extra performance over the much more expensive Core i7 3770K - a processor that's around £100 more expensive than the AMD chip. Only the six-core Intel Core i7 3930K - a £480 processor - beats it comprehensively.

What do you get mugged in Central London and the local police are too incompetent to find a mugger even with his address and photograph? You may not be able to get to the laptop, but you still own the photos and data on it, so you set up the NSFW Plumpergeddon blog which gives details of the subsequent 'owner's' 'Brick House Butts' fetishes. Now of course later the IT media might get interested and offer an interview with a promise to let him review the article and keep his name secret. luckily our hero is not so innocent and demonstrates the value of using a false name on the internet as well as planting your own monitoring software on your laptop

- Residential Tuning: Residential-only cities have failure state.
- Buildings are prevented from going up in density when they don't have power or water.
- The amount of happiness gained from low taxes, police, fire, and health outreach has been lowered.
- Fixed some cases where buildings would not go abandoned when they should have.
- Higher density residential buildings are no longer blocked from going abandoned due to not having enough money.
- Happiness from low taxes does not double up every time it is given.
- Losing happiness due to not having a job is more impactful.
- Budgets: Fixed bug that prevented systems like fire, abandonment, garbage, and sewage from turning on when they were supposed to.
- Audio: Fixes issue where audio will stop working after creating a large city or where phantom audio sounds play in a city.

Previously, the agents would be in a state of limbo and would not recover when new buildings of that type were placed. This will no longer happen.
This comes in the wake of multiple previous updates which tackled traffic congestion and pathfinding problems and a list of other pressing issues.

Believe it or not, Inhon has a wilder concept up its sleeve than the extra-light Blade 13 Carbon laptop. Its equally new Carbon Tablet at first looks like it could pass for anIdeaPad Yoga, but the non-display half has little to do with input this time around -- besides USB 3.0 and Mini DisplayPort jacks, it's mostly about giving some breathing room to the Core i3, i5 or i7 inside. Keep the Windows 8 PC closed and it runs in a slower but quieter mode for handheld use; unfold it for some serious desk work, however, and a cooling fan inside ramps up to run the processor at TurboBoost speeds. Anyone who wants more traditional interaction has to attach an optional, Touch Cover-like keyboard and trackpad combo. We don't entirely grasp the logic when a convertible laptop might have done the trick, although estimated prices between NT $29,999 and NT $39,999 ($1,007 to $1,343 US) for the eventual launch in Taiwan will make it at least somewhat feasible to try Inhon's latest design experiment.

Wargaming has confirmed that its free-to-play title World of Tanks has been breached, having suffered a security "incident".
Whilst sparse on details, the publisher confirms that account information may have become vulnerable.
However, the firm's reassured users that whilst email addresses and password information may have bee accessed, financial details remain secure.
We immediately launched an investigation into the incident and can assure you that no financial information was accessed," said Wargaming within a statement.
"However, we believe that some password hashes and email addresses were affected by the compromise."
Following the breach, Wargaming has launched a security initiative, which aims to raise awareness amongst players of the security of their account, advising gamers to change their login information.
As part of the campaign, Wargaming is offered those players who change their account details 300 of in-game gold.
"We appreciate your immediate attention in resetting your password and apologise for the inconvenience," the company summarised.
The company is now launching a global campaign to increase the security of player accounts, and advised you reset your Wargaming ID account password as soon as possible and change it on other sites if it's the same.
"We appreciate your immediate attention in resetting your password and apologise for the inconvenience," the company said.
Players are able to learn more on the "Change Your Password" campaign on the game's website.

Following the dominance of 4K TVs at the CES show earlier this year, Samsung has confirmed it is to showcase its wider range of Ultra HD displays at IFA 2013.
The South Korean firm announced at a pre-IFA event that it would be showcasing both larger and smaller versions of its Ultra HD S9000 TVs.
Currently, the firm's S-Series line-up contains just an 85-inch TV, severely limited the range's appeal to regular consumers. However, Samsung is now looking to address such issues with a host of differently sized displays.
However, whilst a number of firm's have begun the year by showcasing their Ultra HD TVs, the technology has little behind it right now, as industry standards are yet to catch up.
Whilst a select number of films and games are able to take advantage of the technology, consumers may not immediately be able to experience the full benefits of such devices.

April 20th, 2013, 22:32 Posted By: wraggster
As the mobile computing market continues to grow, GfK Account Executive Robyn Tovey takes a look at how hybrid devices and ultrathin computers could possibly pose a threat to notebooks.
Following a spike in December 2012 which saw almost three times as many media tablets* sold in the UK Retail Channels as traditional notebooks, January 2013 sales were down 63 per cent January on January.
Due to the launch of several high profile 7-inch devices at relatively affordable price points in Q4 2012, we witnessed a surge in sales for these portable computing devices, making them the key gifting product for Christmas 2012.
However, as we moved into January 2013 and the gifting activity slowed down, the sales of these devices also began to subside. The threefold difference between notebooks and media tablet sales was scaled down to almost a similar level of sales volume.
Although the market has slowed down in comparison to December 2012, it is still growing in excess of 200 per cent in volume terms, year-on-year. The ASP (average selling price) which is down 29 per cent in comparison to January 2012, has also had an impact on sales value. However, even when taking that into consideration the market has grown in excess of 100 per cent in value terms, year-on-year.
“With the average selling price around £720, in most cases purchasing a tablet and keyboard separately remains a cheaper option than buying a hybrid.” Robyn Tovey, GfK It is very likely that we will continue to see these growing trends throughout 2013, as lower prices will continue to drive sales of these devices. However the market will become increasingly interesting as more and more hybrid devices begin to hit retail shelves. Hybrid devices, characterised by a detachable or foldable keyboard, are currently seeing a value growth rate of 99 per cent January on January.
The stumbling block for most consumers looking to invest in a hybrid computer at the moment is the price. With an average selling price around £720, in most cases purchasing a tablet and keyboard separately remains a cheaper option. However, if the price points of hybrid devices were to drop in the future, this form factor could pose a threat for notebooks, given the superior mobility hybrids offer.
Another mobile computing form factor that is displaying growth is the ultrathin computer**. In January 2013, year on year volume and value growths reached 372 per cent and 196 per cent respectively. With an average selling price drop of 37 per cent in January 2013 compared to the corresponding month of 2012, it is no wonder this form factor is picking up traction in the retail market. This surge in sales has spurred many manufacturers to increase their portfolio of ultrathin models, to the degree that there are now 319 per cent more models available to consumers than in January 2012.

Java Development Kit 8, planned for September 2013, is being delayed until next year because of 'a renewed focus on security.' Java has been having security publicity problems recently, but Oracle now seems to be taking them more seriously. Mark Reinhold, chief architect of the Java platform group, said, 'Maintaining the security of the Java Platform always takes priority over developing new features, and so these efforts have inevitably taken engineers away from working on Java 8.' The major change still to be made to Java 8 is Project Lambda, which Reinhold says is 'the sole driving feature of the release.' He laid out alternatives, such as dropping Lambda from this release, but said Oracle has decided instead to wait until Lambda is ready. The revised schedule for JDK 8 has a developer preview scheduled for September, a release candidate scheduled for January 2014, and general availablity scheduled for March 2014. The delay means that Java SE 9 will probably be released in early 2016, rather than late 2015."

"Earlier this week, ZDNet columnist Steven Vaughan-Nichols wrote an article, 'Windows: It's over,' that sparked a lot of passionateonline debate. His thesis was simple: Microsoft's dominance of the computing market is coming to an end, accelerated by the incipient failure of Windows 8. Make no mistake about it: there's no way to fudge the numbers in a way that suggests Windows 8 is proving a blockbuster. But maybe it's not doomsday for Windows or Microsoft. After all, the company still has a lot of really smart developers and engineers, a whole ton of cash, and the ability to let its projects play out over years. So here's the question, Slashdotters: Is Windows really doomed? And, if not, what can be done to turn things around? (No originality points awarded for a 'Fire Steve Ballmer' response.)"

April 20th, 2013, 00:01 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has dropped further hints that both a Windows Watch and seven-inch Surface tablet could be on the way.
During the firm's quarterly earnings call, Microsoft announced both a boost in profits and the departure of CFO Peter Klein.
However, Klein opted to discuss the firm's upcoming plans ahead of his departure, and more specifically, the offering of smaller, more competitively priced devices.
"As part of this, we are also working closely with OEMs on a new suite of small touch devices powered by Windows," said the CFO.
"These devices will have competitive price points partly enabled by our latest OEM offerings designed specifically for these smaller devices, and will become available in the coming months."
Whilst not specifically addressing whether Microsoft would consider its own self-produced smaller devices, rumours have long circulated over the release of a smaller, seven-inch edition of the firm's Surface tablet.
Given the dominance of both Apple and Samsung in the tablet market, and the growing demand for smaller, cheaper touch-enabled devices, the decision to release a scaled-down Surface seems – at least on the surface – like an inevitable one.
However, word of smaller Windows 8 enabled devices could also point to lingering whispers that the firm is looking to jump into the wearable tech market. As the rumours heat up surrounding Apple's rumoured iWatch, and the confirmation from Samsung that it is working on a similar device, the vaguely worded "smaller Windows 8 device" could potentially refer to a Windows Watch.
Microsoft is expecting its Windows 8 operating system to trigger global growth for touch-enabled notebooks, despite the declining number of PC sales.
Klein highlighted that the firm had been affected by the decline, despite recording profits, but remained confident that tablet sales would counteract this.
By stating that the firm is "working to increase its share in tablets," Klein may have dropped the most obvious hint to date that Microsoft is working on both a smartwatch and seven-inch Surface.

What's an outgoing Microsoft executive to do on his last earnings call as CFO? Utter something that'd probably get the incoming CFO fired. Kidding aside, the outfit's own Peter Klein saw fit to reiterate something we'd heard back in March -- that Windows 8 is destined for smaller devices. To date, there isn't a Windows 8-based slate on the market south of 10-inches, but as Apple, ASUS, Google and Samsung have found, people tend to like tablets that can be held with a single hand. Of course, the "coming soon" angle definitely adds a time stamp (albeit a vague one) that we didn't have before, but we're still no closer to figuring out what kinds of devices we're to expect. A diminutive tablet? A smartwatch? A phone?
Earlier this week, Terry Myerson -- corporate vice president of Microsoft's Windows Phone division -- admitted that the wearables space was undoubtedly an exciting one, though he wouldn't go so far as to affirm that any of the code he oversaw was being tested on the arm. Of course, rumors have been running wild since Windows Phone's introduction that Microsoft would eventually push WP aside in favor of just using Windows on everything, so we suppose that's another (far out) possibility. Wild imaginations are advised to contribute their best guesses in comments below. (But seriously, keep it sane. Thanks.)

Tech and development firms join forces to demo Project Shield
The tech demo for Nvidia's Project Shield was created using Epic's Unreal Engine 4, the hardware manufacturer has revealed.
Nvidia says this is the first time it has relied on a third party game engine for a product presentation, and that it is now exclusively using the Unreal Engine for such demos.
The Project Shield presentation at CES 13 may have been a landmark in the partnership between these two companies, but it's not like the two haven't been working closely for quite a while.
“As a long-established Unreal Engine partner, we understand the sheer power that Unreal Engine 4 puts into developers’ hands,” said Nvidia's senior vice president of content and technology Tony Tamasi.
“We immediately took the opportunity to utilize UE4’s high-end graphics features and incredible workflow to showcase how our graphics hardware is pushing the industry forward.”

To coincide with the new expansion Rise of the Hutt Cartel, BioWare has released a huge patch that changes and updates each of the eight classes in Star Wars: The Old RepublicToday, however, they’ve only written about the changes to four of them: The Sith Warrior, Smuggler, Jedi Knight, and Imperial Agent. For example, the Sith Warrior has received a new ability called Dual Saber Throw, which, as the name suggests, allows them to throw both of their lightsabers simultaneously for extra damage and a movement speed decrease on the target. You can read all of the changes made at the SWTOR developer blog. The rest of the classes will be written about in the coming days.

Paradox Entertainment has released a new expansion for their political simulator Victoria II, entitled Heart of Darkness. As the name implies, the expansion will take place in Victorian-era colonial Africa, with many European powers vying for control of the continent. It will feature a new naval system, which “fills in the gaps between ironclads and dreadnoughts,” and customizable newspapers for keeping up with happenings among the colonies.Paradox is known for its take on in-depth strategy games, as their are most well-known for Crusader Kings II and the Europa Universalis series.Victoria II: Heart of Darkness will set you back $19.99, and requires both Victoria II and its first expansion, A House Divided, to play

Facebook, Zynga, and EA stock dives following three-game shutdown
EA's decision to shut down three Facebook games has led to stock market setbacks for the social network and a few game makers on the platform.
With the publisher citing a lack of consumer interest for its decision to pull The Sims Social, Sim City Social, and Pet Society from the platform, The Street reports some experts are taking the message that Facebook gaming is in serious trouble.
"It's just harder to get people to commit to games they don't pay for," said Edward Woo, senior research analyst for Ascendiant Capital Markets.
This suggests EA's decision to pull The Sims Social - which still has five million users and 500,000 DAUs - means the publisher is struggling to convert users to customers.
EA's stock dropped 3.81% to $16.91, Zynga fell over five percent to $3.22, and Facebook itself declined by 3.21% to $26.52.
