Fujitsu has developed a next-gen interface that can turn almost any object into a touchscreen.
The user interface can accurately detect the users finger and what it is touching, such as pictures and text from books, turning them into interactive, touchscreen objects.
Although impressively accurate, the system doesn’t use any special hardware, consisting of a webcam-like device and a commercial projector.
"Until now, gesturing has often been used to operate PCs and other devices. But with this interface, we're not operating a PC, but touching actual objects directly, and combining them with ICT equipment," said Taichi Murase, researcher, Media Services System Lab, Fujitsu.
"The system is designed not to react when you make ordinary motions on a table. It can be operated when you point with one finger. What this means is, the system serves as an interface combining analog operations and digital devices."
Although the technology is still at demonstration level, researchers believe a commercial version could be ready by next year.

Add this to the list of Tax Day surprises: the Dell XPS 18 all-in-one is available for pre-order online one day ahead of schedule. The giant tablet / semi-portable desktop won't actually ship until the first week in May, but you can add one of three configurations to your cart now. The entry-level model, with a Pentium processor and a 320GB hard drive, will set you back $900, while Core i3 and Core i5 versions are priced at $1,000 and $1,350, respectively. We liked what we saw when we went hands-on with the 4.85-pound PC: its flip-out feet let you transition between slate and desktop mode easily, and the 1080 capacitive touch display is very crisp. Admittedly, there is only a handful of tabletop Windows 8 slates, but the XPS 18 can hold its own against the Sony VAIO Tap 20 and Lenovo's jumbo-sized Horizon Table PC. Click through to Dell's US site for more details.

Gary Kovacs, (current) CEO of Mozilla, just took the stage here at Dive Into Mobile2013 in New York City. It's apt to be his last major stage appearance before stepping aside in order to "go back to his roots," as described here, and hosts Ina Fried and Walt Mossberg were on hand to grill him on ongoing developments before he heads for other pastures. To start, Walt asked why the browser needed to be the operating system on a phone. Kovacs' reply?
"The browser doesn't need to be the operating system; it needs to incorporate the web. Such that discovery is easy, such that multiple stores can be accessed from the device -- so we aren't locked in, or generally encouraged to be locked within a single ecosystem."

ASUS' distinctive Transformer AiO has been a long time in coming, having firstreached our paws last June. For Americans, it's at last more than just a fantastical idea: Amazon, J&R, Rakuten and other US-friendly online retailers now list the oddest of odd PCs as on sale, and usually in stock. For a typical $1,299, more adventurous buyers get a Windows 8 base desktop with a 3.1GHz Core i5, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive, a DVD drive and a GeForce GT 730M. The real fun, of course, rests in its display. Remove that 18.4-inch LCD from its dock and it suddenly becomes a gigantic Tegra 3-based Android tablet running Jelly Bean. We're not sure if we'll ever completely wrap our heads around the concept, but those who understand ASUS' expanded definition of an all-in-one can shop at the source links.

If you saw our review of the 11.6-inch Taichi 21, you'll know that its unusual dual-screen design had a pretty bad impact on battery life. ASUS is taking another crack at the whip, however, this time with the 13.3-inch Taichi that is finally shipping after amajor hold-up in the US and promises a big boost to stamina -- a max of seven hours of use rather than five. If this claim stands up to scrutiny, the Ultrabook's other advantages should come back into play: namely the presence of pen or multi-touch input on the outer screen, excellent viewing angles and speakers, and a range of configurations based on either a Core i5 or i7 with SSD storage. We have no idea how pricing will compare to the $1,300 base of the 11-incher and the Taichi 31 hasn't appeared at any major retailers yet -- i.e., it still isn't quite as "available" as ASUS claims -- but we'll bring you an update when that changes.

Tomb Raider fans in Japan are being asked to buy $30 worth of additional content if purchasing the game on Steam.
Kotaku reports that as of April 25th the Japanese Steam Store will offer a $30 ‘Japanese language pack’ that adds subtitles and a Japanese voice track to the game.
Without that additional download gamers will be limited to German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Polish, and Arabic with subtitles offered in Korean, Chinese, Dutch, Czech, and Portuguese.
It should be noted that the retail version ships with Japanese support and will already cost $80.
PCGamesN makes further worrying claims suggesting that the version of Tomb Raider already available on Steam in Japan already has Japanese subtitles. Or, it did have them – it’s claimed that they have since been deactivated via a patch, forcing gamers into buying the extra $30 download.

20m sales and counting – indie hit Minecraft is one of the most remarkable successes in the history of gaming.
But there’s a flip-side to these accomplishments. How on earth do you follow-up one of the most successful games ever made?
“I definitely think Minecraft is a freak thing,” he told The New Yorker. “There’s no way you could replicate it intentionally.
“And yes, I’m starting to feel writer’s block as a result. I’m not sure if it’s pressure to repeat… Actually, it is the pressure to repeat. And with Minecraft it was just easier, because nobody knew who I was.
“Now I post a new idea and millions of people scrutinize it. There’s a conflict between the joy of being able to do whatever I want and the remarkable pressure of a watching world. I don’t know how to switch it off.”
The full interview paints the picture of a humble man who perhaps could veer toward the edge of reason were the pressure he was under to get on top of him. Indeed, the suicide of his father in 2011 cemented Persson’s determination to stay healthy, stay social and remain creative.
“I’ve never run a company before and I don’t want to feel like a boss,” he added. “I just want to turn up and do my work.”
And there are actions to back up these words. In 2011 Persson earned a £2.2m dividend. Which he then divided up amongst his employees.
“The money is a strange one. I’m slowly getting used to it, but it’s a Swedish trait that we’re not supposed to be proud of what we’ve done. We’re supposed to be modest,” he explained.
“So at first, I had a really hard time spending any of the profits. Also, what if the game stopped selling? But after a while, I thought about all of the things I’d wanted to do before I had money. So I introduced a rule: I’m allowed to spend half of anything I make. That way I will never be broke. Even if I spend extravagant amounts of money, I will still have extravagant amounts of money.”

Publisher not offering refunds for in-game currency in soon-to-be closed Facebook games
EA has continued its sweeping company-wide restructuring by shutting down three of its Facebook games.
The publisher said The Sims Social, SimCity Social and Pet Society will go offline from June 14th as a result of a large decline in player activity.
In a statement on the closure of The Sims Social, EA said it had made the decision to close the title so it could reallocate development resources to other projects.
EA has also told users to spend any remaining Playfish cash or other existing currency relating to the titles, as it will not be valid after June 14th.
According to AppData, The Sims Social still has more than five million monthly average users, with over 500,000 playing the game daily.

April 14th, 2013, 10:41 Posted By: wraggster
During last year's Kickstarter campaign for Shadownrun Returns, developer Harebrained Schemes was dutiful in noting that every pledge level included a DRM-free version of the game. While that technically remains true, Harebrained Schemes has recently announced a slight caveat: All post-Berlin Campaign DLC will have DRM, and will require Steam.
It shakes out like this: Backers will receive both a DRM-free version and the Steam version of Shadowrun Returns (which does have DRM) when the game launches in June. Additionally, anyone who pledged enough to receive the game's Berlin Campaign DLC will also be given permanent access to both versions. After that, however, all DLC will be distributed exclusively through Steam, DRM in tow.
"The reason is that our license to develop Shadowrun Returns actually requires that the game and its DLC be distributed under DRM," a Kickstarter update on the situation reads. "This didn't come up earlier because the situation was complicated by the number of parties involved in the license and because the process was 'ongoing.'"
"Ultimately," it continues, "we were able to successfully negotiate an exception with Microsoft for us to provide our Backers with a DRM-free version of the Kickstarter rewards (specifically the game and the Berlin Campaign) but that exception does not extend to non-reward DLC. So unfortunately, we cannot sell or give away DRM-free versions of the game or DLC on stores like GoG, and that's why any future Shadowrun Returns DLC will only be available for purchase on Steam."
A table posted by Harebrained Schemes, illustrating the specific differences between the Steam and DRM-free versions of the game, has been embeddedafter the break.

While Road Rash creator Dan Geisler is left wanting to resurrect his MIA motorcycle combat series after EA holds the rights, a group of experienced devs at DarkSeas Games have been hard at work on the Road Rash-inspired Road Redemption, which just launched aKickstarter.Though Geisler isn't involved in the project, DarkSeas is comprised of staff from Sega, Sony, Bioware, Gameloft, Tequila Works, Disney Interactive, 2K Sports, EA, and Lucasarts, so these aren't just a bunch of amateur yahoos.Road Redemption will feature a GTA-esque story about being released from prison and trying to rise the ranks of your biker gang, but it's mostly just an excuse to cruise around slaughtering people with baseball bats and sledge hammers at 120 miles per hour. The combat system will be based on counters and parries. "A stronger weapon is always an advantage, but even a weaker combatant can get the upper hand by forcing his opponent off the road, or into oncoming traffic," explained DarkSeas on its Kickstarter page. The developer noted that Road Redemption will be a rather difficult game and there won't be any auto-aim. "Make no mistake, Road Redemption is geared toward experienced gamers," it stated.Missions sound rather varied ranging from deadly races, to assassination attempts, to chases over the roofs of skyscrapers. There will also be free-for-all and team-based multiplayer modes where rival gangs face off against one another.

Molleindustria won the Grand Jury Award at IndieCade last year for Unmanned, which took us through a day in the monotonous life of a drone pilot, and now it's made a game about corporate tax evasion.
Tax Evaders casts you as a group of individuals trying to shoot down corporations - portrayed as alien space ships with corporate logos on them - before they escape and fail to pay their fair share. Let too many of them slide by and the social services you're so desperately trying to protect will fall into ruin. This is represented by a city in the background consisting of a school, hospital, bridge, fire station and park that get repaired or fall into disarray based on your performance.Importantly, these aren't just fictitious evil corporations like we see in so many games, but actual real thriving companies like Citibank, General Electric, BP and Exxon. I don't want to spoil the ending, suffice to say that once you bring the flying ship in-game corporations to justice, you're prompted with a way to do the same with their real life counterparts in the meatspace.Tax Evaders may be clever and political, but it's also just plain funny, such as when you're told, "Oh no! the government is trying to fix capitalism with more capitalism!"Though short and shallow from an arcade game perspective, Tax Evaders is still fun, clever and actually has something to say. Play it at taxevaders.net.

Medion isn't the best-known PC badge outside of Europe, but it does have an occasional eye for sleek design. We'd say the Lenovo-backed company's new Akoya P2004 offers that kind of style UK crowd. The all-in-one fits a 23.6-inch, 1080p display into a minimalist design that's oddly charming for what's ultimately a budget machine. No one would call the P2004 feature-loaded when it's carrying a dual-core 3.2GHz Core i3, 4GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and a DVD burner, but the price is right at a frugal£500 ($770). The catch? If you like what's on offer, you're going to have to swing byASDA, which has the UK exclusive. Still, we wouldn't object too much to picking up a fairly tasteful Windows 8 PC alongside the groceries.

First time accepted submitter Benedick writes"I have a four year old desktop and a three year old notebook. Why haven't I upgraded to a new machine? Because they still work great. PC sales aren't declining because of Windows 8. They are declining because our PCs are so good, they last a lot longer. Will Oremus of Slate explains it better than I can."

Kaspersky Lab has completed a detailed analysis of "Winnti," a group of Asian hackers who target servers hosted by gaming companies, copying their source code and surreptitiously stealing money or virtual goods over time. In findings published April 10, the security firm said it had completed the latest phase of its eighteen-month investigation. A more detailed account of an actual attacks was published separately (PDF). Winnti has attacked two gaming companies in North America, two in Germany, two in Russia, and fourteen in South Korea. Although the Winnti group has been around for years, it first came to light in 2011, when Trojans began appearing on the PCs of users playing MMORPGs, online computer games which usually require a monthly subscription. Those Trojans, which included RAT (Remote Administration Tool) functionality, had been "signed" with the digital certificate of KOG, a South Korean gaming company. In the course of its investigation, Kaspersky discovered that the gaming companies (which often share resources, partner, and subcontract out work to one another) had provided an opportunity for the Winnti team to secure access to otherwise legitimate digital certificates, which could be used to sign malware. Malware signed by Japanese gaming company YNK Japan was used to attack the servers of social networks Cyworld and Nate in South Korea in 2011.

Reinforcing the Microsoft is bad for indies narrative doesn't hurt them, it hurts indies, says Ska Studios dev
Microsoft’s role as an indie game publisher is misunderstood, says the developer behind upcoming XBLA title Charlie Murder.
Writing in a blog, James Silva challenged perceptions of Microsoft as an overbearing publisher that uses stringent guidelines to get games published on its platforms.
Silva insisted that his game company, Ska Studios, had full creative control on Charlie Murder, in which the main character uses a Windows Phone as an information hub.
He stated that 100 per cent of the non-localised content for the game was made by him and co-developer Michelle, except from a few gaming “celebrities" which make cameos in the title.
The indie also said that Microsoft had been very helpful in the title’s development, assisting with localisation, finding and fixing bugs and telling them how close they are to passing the certification process.
