LucasArts is to be closed down by new owners Disney as the brand looks to favour an external licensing business model over internal development.
The decision follows Disney's buyout of parent company LucasFilms and the Star Wars franchise for $4bn last year.
Disney has issues a full statement on the closure, stating: "After evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimising the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games.
"As a result of this change, we've had layoffs across the organisation."
"We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles."
It signals the end for LucasArts, which had ultimately faced a bleak future, despite its previous success in the 1980's and 90's.
LucasArts was restructured in 2004 by then-president Jim Ward, and again following his departure in 2008. At the time, the firm had investments in both Star Wars and Indiana Jones games, in addition to other third-party titles.
However, development struggled and only titles such as the LEGO Star Wars franchise and other licensed titles made it to release.
Despite initial work on Star Wars MMO The Old Republic in partnership with EA development studio BioWare, publishing duties were eventually handed over to EA themselves.
The closure of LucasArts puts an end to on-going projects, which includes next-gen favourite Star Wars 1313, which caused a stir at last year's E3 expo.
Whilst the title was seen as one of the most anticipated of the show – and the next-generation of games – Disney is said to be clamping down on the newly acquired Star Wars license, halting work on all projects outside of the upcoming Star Wars films set to debut in 2015.
Presumably Star Wars 1313 – a title set between the already existing trilogies and focused away from traditional aspects of the Force and Jedi – didn't fit in with Disney's plan.
Disney has plans for new Star Wars projects, which will be handled through external licensing deals with developers, but it's a shame that one of the brightest spots of the next-generation, and one of the most decorated games studios, have effectively burnt out.

Blizzard has already openly admitted that Diablo 3's co-op play need work, and it plans to address many of its issues with update 1.0.8. Blizzard's Wyatt Cheng has released a load of new details on exactly how the developer aims to improve co-op multiplayer. On 'Matchmaking Tags', Cheng explained, "Patch 1.0.8 introduces the ability to specify what we call a "matchmaking tag" for Public Games. The way this new system will work is pretty simple: in addition to selecting a difficulty, quest, and MP level, you can also select a tag that will identify what kind of gameplay you're looking for from a Public Game."Blizzard will also be added XP buffs for multiplayer play. "Many players have already figured out that if you coordinate well with your party, you're more efficient. That's definitely true, but we'd like this benefit to be more explicit," said Cheng. "So, we're going to straight up add a bonus for playing in multiplayer. We're still working on the details of what that buff is going to be, but at the moment we're looking at 10% more XP per extra player in the game for a maximum bonus of 30% more XP in a 4-player game."The developer plans to rebalance the game's co-op difficulty by reducing monster health in co-op games."Monsters currently gain 70% extra health per additional player in the game. This is being reduced from 70% to 50%," detailed Cheng. "This means in a two-player game, monsters have 150% as much health as a single-player game. In a three-player game, they have 200% as much health. And in a four-player game, they have 250% as much health (compared to 310% on live)."Numerous other changes were detailed, including an 'identify all' function, Combat Alerts for Elite pack encounters, a 'Players Near You' function that lets you find local network players, private chat for up to 100 people and more. Check out Cheng's in-depth post on the official blog.

Players of troubled simulation title SimCity now have access to a free piece of Nissan-sponsored DLC.
The Nissan Leaf Charging Station would in real-life allow owners of Nissan’s electric car the chance to plug in and recharge. In-game it gives its users a happiness boost and also offers a one-time happiness boost to surrounding businesses.
And by some miracle of science it also doesn’t draw any power from the grid or produce any rubbish. Nor is it favoured by wealthier Sims, as uptake will be the same across all three income brackets.
The DLC can be downloaded from the ad that should appear the next time it is launched or instead directly from Origin. It will be available for the next six months.

The biggest problem with IE10 as far as modern web apps go is its lack of WebGL support. Now we have strong evidence that IE11 will support WebGL. A leaked build of Windows 'Blue,' aka Windows 8.1, also contained an early version of IE11. Web developer François Remy decided to see what it was hiding and found that there were WebGL APIs, but they were non-functional. Rafael Rivera, who writes the Within Windows blog, dug a little deeper and discovered the registry keys that have to be changed to enable WebGL support. Apparently the API works so well that you can take existing WebGL programs (with OpenGL shaders) and just run them. As the implementation also supports DirectX HLSL shaders, it seems reasonable to guess that the implementation maps OpenGL to DirectX, thus avoiding Microsoft having to endorse OpenGL use."

PC manufacturers may try to corral Chromebook, much like Netbooks, by setting frustratingly low hardware expectations. The systems being released from HP, Acer, Lenovo and Samsung are being built around retro Celeron processors and mostly 2 GB of RAM. By doing so, they are targeting schools and semi-impulse buyers and may be discouraging corporate buyers from considering the system. Google's Pixel is the counter-force, but at a price of $1,299 for the Wi-Fi system, reviewers, while gushing about hardware, believe it's too much, too soon. The Chromebook is a threat to everything, especially PC makers, as its apps improve. Compare Tweetdeck's HTML5 version with its native app. Can you tell the difference? It might be a year or two before Adobe delivers Web-only versions of its products, but if it doesn't it will be surrendering larger portions of its mindshare to users of Pixlr, Pixel Mixer, PicMonkey and many other interesting and increasingly capable tools."

Prices of Windows RT devices have started falling, signaling an attempt by PC makers to quickly clear out stock after poor adoption of tablets and convertibles with the operating system. Microsoft released Windows RT for ARM-based devices and Windows 8 for Intel-based devices in October last year. The price drop is an acknowledgment that Windows RT has failed, analysts claim. Though Microsoft has not publicly acknowledged the failure of Windows RT, there is already growing concern about the fate of the OS. IDC earlier this month said that Windows RT tablet shipments have been poor, and that consumers have not bought into 'Windows RT's value proposition.' PC and chip makers have acknowledged poor adoption of the operating system. Nvidia's CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, last month said he was disappointed with the poor response to Windows RT, and Acer executives have said that Microsoft needs to improve the usability of RT

Microsoft has cut the prices of a variety of Windows 8 based tablets and hybrid laptops within its online store.
Despite launching Windows RT and Windows 8 last October, the firm has begun to slash prices on its partners' hybrid devices.
However, Microsoft's own Surface RT tablet has not been included within the cuts, as its price tag remains consistent at $499.
Amongst the discounted devices is Toshiba's Satellite Convertible Notebook, which is now listed on the Microsoft store at $799 down from $1,149, whilst the HP ENVY x2 Touchscreen has similarly been reduced from $849 to $599.
Other devices that have received cuts include the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T and Acer Iconia tablets, cut to $999 and $399 respectively.
Whilst the cuts are likely a routine reduction in order to maintain competitive pricing on ageing models, analysts have been quick to label the move as a sign of trouble for Microsoft.
Tech research firm IDC predicts that 2013 shipments will continue to fall by 1.3 per cent – a worrying trend for PC makers.
"Disappointing holiday sales, an underwhelming reception to Windows 8, and continuing economic malaise that further crimped IT budgets marked the face of the market during the second half of 2012, leading to a year-on-year decline of 8.3 per cent in fourth-quarter shipments, the most substantial decline recorded for a holiday quarter," IDC told CNET.

Some Firefox releases have more noticeable changes than others. We'd say that the newly finalized Firefox 20 is firmly in that first camp. The new release gives desktop users a Safari-like download manager that pops out from the toolbar, making it possible to check on a big download without anything so ungainly as a separate window. Also new are more refined approaches to private browsing that can open a new window (on the desktop) or tab (on Android) for those extra-personal, secretive... gift-shopping sessions, according to Mozilla. Whether or not you believe that euphemism, there's no doubt that Android users receive their own specific treat through support for lower-end ARMv6 phones, including relative oldies like the HTC Legend and Samsung Galaxy Q. Hit the source links to stay current with Firefox, no matter how innocuous your intentions might be.

It's a world of code names out there, and final products rarely ever inherit the name given to them during the development process. It appears that Microsoft doesn't plan to buck the trend with the client version of Windows Blue, an OS refresh that Mary Jo Foley says is destined to become Windows 8.1. The screenshot you see above of Build 9375 was leaked on WinForum.eu and Foley has confirmed it with her sources; apparently Blue is poised to be kept under the Windows 8 umbrella instead of Win9, so the 8.x naming scheme would fit. Additionally, her sources have indicated that the Blue update for RT will simply be known as Windows RT 8.1. While we wait for official word from Microsoft, check out our screenshot tour of a recently leaked build of the update -- after all, its functionality is a bit more important than whatever it gets named.

The Company of Heroes 2 closed beta kicks off today, and Sega has released descriptions of the maps available and some accompanying screenshots.Initially open to eligible pre-order customers before being rolled out to more players "in the coming weeks", the Company of Heroes 2 beta will be hosted on Steam and feature multiplayer and skirmish gameplay set across six maps.Players will be able to test 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 competitive gameplay, play alone or with friends against the AI, and will have access to the first 40 levels of progression. Steppes- Pripyat: The Pripyat River and the marshes that follow its meandering course was an obstacle to the German advance into the Soviet Union in 1941, and a similar problem when the Soviets finally returned in 1944 during Operation Bagration. In the intervening years, partisan forces waged an effective campaign behind the lines using river crossings and forested areas to blunt the military advantage of their enemy. Seizing key territory objectives is the key to this strategic area.
- Kholodny: 'Kholodny' translates roughly in Russian as 'the cold one'. Several villages in Russia and the Ukraine share variations on this name, but all are in parts of this vast region where temperatures can reach fatally low levels. Many of the Isbas (small wooden farmhouses) in this area have been destroyed in prior conflicts, so shelter is at a premium. Keep your troops alive by using cover, fire, and half-tracks.
- Rzhev: One of the most brutal battles of World War II, "The Rzhev Meat Grinder", cost Soviet forces more than 1 million soldiers both dead and injured. Both combatant armies will struggle to keep their infantry alive in the bitter cold, where blizzards and ice are treacherous. Control the battlefield and flatten the Rzhev Salient once and for all.
- Oka River: The headwaters of the Oka River start near the ancient citadel town of Orel where they flow east until they merge with the mighty Volga, eventually passing Stalingrad, the site of one of the largest battles in human history. The Oka is a beautiful sight in winter, but its fragile ice can doom friend and foe alike, and the bitter cold can take a toll on the unprepared...or unwary. Reaching the enemy is impossible without crossing the Oka at some point - Battlefield resources are distributed on both shores.
- Steppes: The temperate steppe is a region of rolling grasslands, small stands of trees, and scattered villages. From time immemorial, vast armies have clashed on the expansive plains that cover wide swaths of Eastern Europe, turning this region into one of history's greatest killing grounds. Armor can move rapidly across the gently rolling terrain, slowed only occasionally by shallow rivers. Players are challenged to hold resource points on this large open map where forces are spread thin.
- Moscow Outskirts: The German army reached the outer suburbs of Moscow on December 2nd, 1941 and were allegedly able to spot the spires of the Kremlin some 20km away. Heavy winter snows indicated the arrival of General Winter and cases of frostbite and exposure deaths increased dramatically in the German Army. Moscow was spared, and the course of the war permanently altered. Cold weather dictates strategy on this map - keep your troops alive by using cover, buildings, and fires.

Microsoft's latest becomes most common OS on Steam outside of Windows 7; NetMarketShare puts Windows 8 usage at 3%
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Windows 8 continues to gain market share among the gaming public. According to Steam's March hardware survey statistics, 9.92 percent of the downloadable game service's users are running the 64-bit version of Microsoft's latest OS.
That's a jump of just over 1 percent month-over-month, which was enough for Windows 8 to overtake Windows XP 32-bit and become the third most common OS among Steam users. Windows 7 64-bit is in first with 55.11 percent of the user base, while vanilla Windows 7 was used by 13.40 percent of Steam players last month.
However, Windows 8 adoption rates appear significantly lower outside of the gaming industry. Based on its network of 40,000 websites with 160 million unique monthly visits, NetMarketShare's March 2013 data found Windows 8 accounted for just 3.17 percent of the web-browsing market. That's well below Windows XP (38.73 percent), and even Vista (4.99 percent). However, it did top the most common Mac OS X version, 10.8, which accounted for 2.65 percent of NetMarketShare's network traffic.
Windows 8 launched October 26, and had sold more than 60 million licenses as of January.

Game and forum taken offline while breach is addressed
Having already been forced off Steam following controversy about missing content and inaccurate game descriptions, the poorly received zombie shooter has now suffered at the hands of hackers.
Creators OP Productions have taken the game and its forum completely offline while it addresses the issues.
The company says hackers breached both the game’s forums and databases and successfully obtained email addresses and encrypted passwords.
As payments are handled by a third party, that information has not been compromised.
“We are issuing this Security Alert to all Survivors as a precaution so you can take some precautionary measures on your own,” the official statement read.

There are only three days left to pledge support to PC gameTorment: Tides of Numenera, a sequel of sorts to cult classic Planescape: Torment.
It's planned to be a single-player, isometric role-playing game that, while not a direct sequel to Planescape Torment, is being written and designed to 'continue the thematic legacy' of the 1999 classic.
Tides of Numenera long ago hit its initial target of $900,000, to ensure that the game would be made. Since then it has set up a number of ‘stretch targets’ to give extra value to pledgers if a certain amount is reached - for example if it hits $3.5 million well-known games designer Chris Avellone will join the team.
At the time of writing, support for the game has reached $3.3 million and there are three days left until pledging stops and the game can go into development.
In the creators' own words: Torment: Tides of Numenera is a game set in the world of Monte Cook’s new tabletop RPG setting, Numenera. Torment continues the thematic legacy of Planescape: Torment, a critically acclaimed role-playing game from 1999 that's considered by many to be a hallmark for storytelling in computer RPGs. With Torment, we're striving to create a rich role-playing experience that explores similar deep, personal themes. Here's the scoop:
- Torment is a single-player, isometric role-playing game.
- You will play a single, specific character, though you will encounter optional NPC companions you may choose to include in your party.
- The story-driven game will have a rich dialogue system and approach similar to that of Planescape: Torment.
- The game will be developed in the Unity engine for PC (Windows), Mac, and Linuxplatforms.
- The game will be available in English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Russian,Spanish.
- The game will be distributed DRM-free. (You’ll be able to get it from Steam, and other DRM-free download options will be made available.)
What are you waiting for - go pledge!

Valve has revealed the latest weekly top selling products on Steam, with Bioshock Infinite out in front again for its launch week.
Infinite itself, and its Season Pass DLC sandwiched the consistently high-selling Arma 3 Alpha for the top three spots on this week's chart.
The GTA Complete Pack and GTA IV made their way onto the list, thanks to a discount promo for the franchise; something a couple of Square Enix-published titles also benefited from.
Steam Early Access representative Kerbal Space Program stays on the list after last week's debut, climbing one peg to the eighth slot.
- Bioshock Infinite
- Arma 3 Alpha
- Bioshock Infinite - Season Pass
- Defiance
- Grand Theft Auto Complete Pack
- Hitman: Absolution
- Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition
- Kerbal Space Program
- Just Cause 2

The Diablo III development team made mistakes with the auction house, item design and combat diversity, according to the game’s former creative director, Jay Wilson. Speaking at GDC 2013 Wilson did, however, also praise other aspects of the game, including its accessibility, health system and character design.First, Wilson admitted that the Blizzard development team had got the item system badly wrong. Diablo revised items from Diablo II to prevent characters like Diablo II’s Sorceress, who was almost totally item-independent – and hence overpowered and extremely popular.Unfortunately, in Diablo III “Items were mathy” he said, as players needed to maximise their character’s particular core stats. “Being a Barbarian and swinging an axe doesn’t often involve algebra,” said Wilson. Blizzard has attempted to fix this with hundreds of new legendary items in patch 1.04, which are more ‘build changer’ items.Similarly, combat was made repetitive by the player’s high level of skill customization. “We had no ‘diverse combat mechanics’ pillar… the player is a swiss army knife, we don’t know if they’re the scissors or the saw,” Wilson said. If the designer doesn’t know any of the skills a player has, not even dodges or ranged attacks, then he can’t design mechanics around them, limiting him to the few attacks universal to all classes.Similarly, though Wilson generally praised the rich skill customization system, he felt that the linear levelling up system often provided players with skills that they would never use, undermining the appeal of upgrading. He was most damning regarding the game’s much-delayed auction house, saying: “I think we would turn it off if we could.” He also suggested that the team had deeply underestimated the playerbase’s use of both auction houses, making them both messy and dominant, and undermining player’s ability to play. He did, however, defend their decision to implement as they did. “We picked the wrong answer, but I stand by us trying to solve a problem that really needs to be solved.”On the positive side, Wilson felt that the team managed to replicate the first game’s accessibility, even reducing the complexity of the keyboard commands – which will prove useful ahead of the upcoming console launch. As Wilson put it, “I loved that I could just shove Cheetos in my mouth and have a beer and play with one hand.” He praised their decision to purloin God of War’s random health orb system over Diablo II’s potion-based system, as it rewarded players for attacking monsters. Finally, he was extremely happy with the thematic elements of the game, particularly the highly original class archetypes, saying “awesome comes first”.

Gamers were down-right spoiled at this year's GDC with a full 17 minutes of beautifulBattlefield 4 in-game footage. Minds blown, AMD took responsibility for the part it played in the mess, admitting the demo was running on its Radeon HD 7990 graphics card. It's the first time the company's confirmed the existence of the long-fabled card, and went as far as calling the case-busting monster "the world's fastest." All we know is the card combines two of the HD 7970's Tahiti GPUs -- AMD's not sharing the full specs -- but the eagle-eyed folks at AnandTech have plucked a few extra details from the limited pictures available. They note the open-air cooling, which would require a drafty case but mean the fans should run fairly quiet, and that power consumption is likely to be no more than 375 watts. Not much to go on, we know, but we'll be waiting eagerly for AMD's full reveal. Now, your BF4 video awaits. (Warning: the game dialogue contains a few naughty words).
