While it has been reported that global PC sales are plummeting, global demand for tablets is growing fast.
Taiwan-based supply chain sources have told DigiTimesthat they believe this increase in popularity will see vendors adopting plastic chassis for entry-level tablets in a bid to minimise production costs and retail prices.
As more and more vendors join the entry-level tablet market, the sources believe prices may drop to under $100 (around £65) by the end of the year.
“Tablets have dramatically changed the device landscape for PCs, not so much by ‘cannibalising’ PC sales, but by causing PC users to shift consumption to tablets rather than replacing older PCs,” said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner.
“Whereas as once we imagined a world in which individual users would have both a PC and a tablet as personal devices, we increasingly suspect that most individuals will shift consumption activity to a personal tablet, and perform creative and administrative tasks on a shared PC. There will be some individuals who retain both, but we believe they will be exception and not the norm. Therefore, we hypothesise that buyers will not replace secondary PCs in the household, instead allowing them to age out and shifting consumption to a tablet.”
Could we be seeing plastic entry-level tablets from Asus, Amazon and Google by the end of 2013? If IDC’s recent report about the slump in PC sales is anything to go by, manufacturers will be looking to gain as much of the mobile device market as possible.

Even with Sony's confident $380 million buyout of Gaikai and the upcoming PlayStation 4 tie-in, cloud gaming remains a dubious prospect for core gamers. The performance of tech pioneer OnLive highlights the hitherto unresolved challenges: video compression kills image quality and input lag remains an issue. But what if we told you that OnLive has recently transformed significantly - for the better?A recent update to the service - which arrived without any kind of fanfare - brings about serious enhancements to the service, for the time being available in the PC client only. There are new options including the ability to scale up image quality bandwidth up to 12mbps, plus there's a v-sync toggle and low-latency screen modes. The former is a huge boon to gamers with faster connections especially, but are these extras truly enough to put the image quality and latency issues to rights? With this higher bandwidth setting open for use, we thought we'd see just how much of a leap it represents over the standard 5mbps rate. A 12mbps connection should go a long way towards alleviating macroblock artifacting issues common to OnLive, but considering the h.264-encoded stream is relaying a full 60FPS signal for most games, is this enough to produce a consistently smooth image? Utilising a fibre-optic line offering a download speed of 60Mbps, we play through a range of fast-moving shooters, fighters and racers to get an idea of where the changes come into effect. The upgrade is considerable, with textures and distant details coming across with a far greater degree of intricacy on the 12mbps cap. The clarity still doesn't hold up to the real deal (video compression pares back colour depth significantly, resulting in a washed out image) but the threshold for making this a passable gameplay experience is now far more tolerable, especially in living room conditions where the player sits some distance away from the screen. Strangely, the performance test readings available in the client's configuration menu only rate our connection at 8.2mbps, regardless of whether we're set to the lowest or the maximum bandwidth setting possible. Running a bandwidth monitor in the background reveals that this is far from the truth, where booting OnLive with 12mbps selected accurately reflects the actual download rate.

Last month, Samsung outed an update to the 13-inch Series 9 that saw its 1,600 x 900 LCD display replaced with the glory of full 1080p. And starting today, that Windows 8 Ultrabook is going on sale with pretty much the same internal configuration it had in a previous, less Premium life -- save for the 2GHz Core i7 inside. For a cool $1,400, you're looking at 4GB of RAM, an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU, WiFi a/b/g/n and a 128GB SSD all neatly packed into an aluminum unibody design. So, you can do your eyes a favor (and your wallet some significant damage) by trading up now. Or stick with what you've got. Don't worry, if they don't ask, you don't have to tell Intel.

Gamers unserved by a quiet summer release schedule might find solace in raft of new digital games from Ubisoft.
The firm is looking to take advantage of a barren period for boxed games with a clutch of download titles – including a swift follow up to Xmas hit Far Cry 3.
Ubisoft this week unveiled six games it will release over the next four months: Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, Spartacus Legends, Flashback, Call of Juarez Gunslinger, Cloudberry Kingdom, and Might & Magic X Legacy.
They are a combination of download-to-own and F2P?games, and a mix of original new titles and spin-offs.
The games were shown at a central London event.
Thomas Paincon, Ubisoft EMEA’s free-to-play publishing director told MCV that the range of games were proof that the firm’s digital strategy is “delivering concrete results and concrete games”.
He said: “After Beyond Good & Evil HD, From Dust, I am Alive and Trials Evolution, we keep on proposing original experiences like Spartacus, which will be our first free to play on console, but also Cloudberry Kingdom which was initiated on Kickstarter and is incredibly repayable.”
The firm is also using digital as a platform for retail game spin-offs – the first of which is Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. The standalone is built on Far Cry 3’s engine but in a new setting inspired by 1980s action movies.
Said Paincon: “This standalone game will be based on all the gameplay pillars that made Far Cry 3 one of the best FPS titles in 2012 but will propose a fresh environment and new elements that will push the Far Cry 3 experience to a new level.”
The new Juarez game is also based on the roots of the series’ retail adventures, while Flashback HD is a revamp of the 1992 original.
Ubisoft sees a big opportunity for digital content to grab attentions with little new content available on the High Street.
“We know from previous years that the first quarter of the year is usually quieter than the end of the year and Christmas concerning triple-A retail releases, so it gives players and us the opportunity to propose new experiences,” said Paincon.
“Players are more keen in investing their time and money in new types of games or even new brands that could be overwhelmed in visibility during the Christmas period.”
Media coverage is also less crowded and gives the opportunity for journalists to spend time on original games that could require more explanation, he said.
A raft of digital promotions will also help the games: “There are also plenty of promotions and loyalty programs during this Q1 such as Play to Earn Microsoft Program, Steam sales or PlayStation store promotions. Whether it is on PC or console, this gives us the opportunity to communicate again on high quality digital titles that players were not aware of because they were released during the Christmas period.
“Media space is also less crowded and this enables us to set up campaigns with a lower budget than it would during September to December. So we usually released our digital titles during this period to benefit from all these positive elements in terms of budget, time available and visibility opportunities.
“Download channels are offering flexibility and enable us to reach a maximum of potential players in a minimum of time. With demo and the free-to-play model, it also enables us to let players test our games and convince them to buy our games.
“And it has also granted us the ability to test new IPs or new concepts thatcould be very risky and less accepted in the established models.”

The next generation of PC graphics cards from Nvidia doesn’t look set to arrive until 2014.
The current 600 series debuted over a year ago, with the only recent refreshes being the powerhouse GTX Titan and the recent 660 re-spec the GTX 660Ti Boost. A GTX Titan LE is expected out in Q3.
However, Tom’s Hardware reports that a leaked Nvidia GPU roadmap points to the release of its next standard, currently known as Maxwell, some time in the New Year.
Nvidia rival AMD is rumoured to be preparing to launch its new Radeon 8000 series in Q4 of this year.
The complicating factor, of course, is the upcoming release of the PS4 and new Xbox. We know the PS4 is being built on AMD components and all signs point to AMD powering Xbox 360 too.
Both machines are likely to match mid-to-high range cards currently available for PC, with the GTX 700 series and Radeon 8000 series expected to significantly surpass them.

April 11th, 2013, 23:58 Posted By: wraggster
George Orwell’s 1984 contained within it the disturbing spectre of three nation states locked in perpetual, pointless conflict. This bleak state of affairs wasn’t motivated by political conviction or desperate need, but a desire to keep the masses’ passions directed and engaged. There was no end to hostilities in sight, nor the political desire to achieve it. And, in the nicest possible of ways, this rather reminds us of Command & Conquer. This is EA’s forever war, an all-out repurposing of the game that would have become Command & Conquer: Generals 2, but has now been transformed into the foundation for a new free-to-play incarnation of the series. Don’t let the absence of far-future technology or weaponised dolphins in the surrounding screenshots fool you: while at launch Command & Conquer will effectively be Generals 2, this is a flexible base for expansion. The spurs of the Red Alert series and the sci-fi chain that followed 1999’s Tiberian Sun are all but guaranteed to follow some way down the line as expansions. Still, there are aspects to Generals that make it uniquely suited to relaunching the series.“Generals 2 was one of the most popular requests from the community,” explains senior development director Tim Morten, “and it’s been a long time since Command & Conquer went back to that universe.”For the uninitiated, Generals was 2003’s near-future C&C, which seemed designed to offset the increasingly far-future tech of the Tiberium series and the camp tomfoolery of Red Alert. As well as a distinct approach to resource scavenging, Generals offered General Abilities. These limited-use skills, such as carpet bombing runs, could be activated to the turn the tide of battle at crucial points, much like realtime versions of Advance Wars’ CO Powers. They return in Command & Conquer as part of a focus on the individual general you’re playing as. Victory Games’ reboot has three main factions, but your choice of general will effectively allow you to play a sub-faction within the three.Playable generals represent one way in which Victory has solved the problem of making a free-to-play RTS game. Letting players purchase units or resources mid-battle would be a disaster, turning tightly fought skirmishes into little more than Top Trumps played with participants’ bank balances. But having a new general doesn’t in itself represent an advantage.Generals unlock through play, but if you’re tired of grinding then you can pay to skip the wait. There’s still potential here for backlash, especially if Victory lets an overpowered general slip out of the academy, but such an error would be catastrophic for the game’s balance even if no payment was attached. Furthermore, use of DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine has given Victory access to some sophisticated networking technology that’s perfectly capable of ensuring players with a great deal of content unlocked are matched against one another rather than rookies.Generals won’t be the only paid-for content, we’re sure, but they are key part of the strategy. “We feel like the concept of having specific generals is really compelling,” Morten says, “and we’re planning to carry that into other franchises as we start to revisit them.” While this does mean that previously self-enclosed Command & Conquer franchises are starting to cross-pollinate one another with what were once discrete mechanics, a Red Alert General Ability is certainly something we’d like to see.

DirectX 9 an immense factor in holding back PC development, says CEO
Strategy games have struggled in the last few years because of Microsoft’s “catastrophic” decision not to implement DirectX 10 on Windows XP as a standard, says the CEO of Stardock
In the company’s 2012 customer report, Brad Wardell said that although a number of great titles had been released, innovation in the genre had been diminishing over the last few years.
He explained that the fault however was not on developers, but on the fact that they had been stuck on DirectX9 and 2gb of memory for the past decade, holding back PC development “immensely”.
Wardell added that although first-person shooters hadn’t suffered particularly, not giving DirectX 10 to Windows XP users meant RPGs as well as strategy games had been hit hard.
“For strategy gamers, the last few years have been a mixed blessing,” he said.

Microsoft is developing a 7-inch Surface tablet that is expected to go into mass production later this year, reportsWSJ.
According to ‘people familiar with the company’s plans’, the 7-inch tablets weren’t part of the company’s strategy last year, but Microsoft execs realised they needed a response to the increased popularity in small tablets.
So in an attempt to take on the likes of Google’s Nexus 7 and Apple’s iPad mini, Microsoft has added a 7-inch Surface to its new lineup of tablets.
With IDC reporting that half of tablets shipped in Q4 were smaller than eight inches, its no surprise that Microsoft is keen to shrink down its 10.6-inch flagship tablet.
The news of a possible 7-inch Surface ties in nicely with the fact that Microsoft recently changed its Windows 8 policy regarding screen resolution. The OS now allows for 1024x768 tablet screens along with the original 1366x768 resolution.

A new report from research firm IDC has revealed a 14 per cent fall in global PC sales for Q1 2013.
This figure is the largest quarterly decline since 1994 – when IDC first started tracking the industry.
"Fading Mini Notebook shipments have taken a big chunk out of the low-end market while tablets and smartphones continue to divert consumer spending," said IDC's report.
"PC industry efforts to offer touch capabilities and ultraslim systems have been hampered by traditional barriers of price and component supply, as well as a weak reception for Windows 8."
While this report shows desktop sales are dwindling, netbooks are pretty much defunct and ultrabooks aren’t selling as well as they should, this further emphasises the fact that it's all about mobile computing these days.
HP remained the top vendor, but posted a substantial double-digit decline in shipments after an aggressive fourth quarter kept growth flat during the holidays.
Lenovo remained second in global shipments and nearly closed the gap with HP. Lenovo continued to outpace the market, notably expanding shipments with its attack strategy. It was the only vendor not to decline in growth over the past year.

Google Maps users in the UK will be able to help provide detailed local information to the service.
Google announced today that its Map Maker edit tool has now been extended to the UK. The online tool allows users to contribute and edit map data for certain regions across the globe, meaning they can locate, draw, label and provide attributes for local map features.
By enabling users to more precisely map locations in and around their locality, it is hoped that the overall quality of the Google Maps service will be improved.
As part of the UK launch, Google Maps users and community members will converge upon Bletchley Park, Milton Keynes – the first place in the UK to test out and have contributions made to its area – for a MapUp workshop, allowing them to get first-hand experience with the new tool.
Google is also inviting Brits to share and update Google Maps by update their favourite shops in London’s Soho Square, improve driving directions around the country and providing useful updates to maps of their home towns.

Before its closure, LucasArts was working a project that was to become the much-anticipated Star Wars: Battlefront III, and gameplay footage of that game has leaked online. According to Kotaku, the project was known internally as 'Version Two'.Not to be mistaken with the also recently leaked shooter Star Wars: First Assault, 'Version Two' was to feature FPS gameplay as well as ground and aerial vehicular combat, as the leaked footage shows.AT-AT Walkers, X-Wings, TIE Fighters and numerous other vehicles are shown in what appear to be large-scale combat scenarios in a range of different environments."[There's] a very vocal audience that's clamoring for Battlefront III," said a source to Kotaku. "We were hoping to eventually give it to them."

Taking Google's maps and Street View imagery, design firm Teehan+Lax Labs has moulded them into an unofficial time-lapse animation site. While there's some predetermined (and beautiful) routes offered up on the maker's site, you can also plug in your own favorite journeys from A to B -- perfect for reliving that milk run. If you're looking for something a little more aspirational, however, we've added a video of one of the lab's examples after the break.

It's not a hybrid like the ATIV Smart PC, it doesn't run RT like the ATIV Tab or Windows Phone like the ATIV S, and yet the laptop above is apparently destined to become part of the family. The ATIV Book 6 hasn't been formally announced, but an accidental and promptly-pulled listing on Samsung's site suggests that it takes on the shape of a regular high-spec Windows 8 notebook with a 15.6-inch 1080p touch sensitive display, Core i7 processor, up-to-date Radeon HD graphics chip, 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD. In other words, it sounds very much like the equivalently priced Series 7 Chronos, apart from the non-metal casing, the model number and potentially other differences we don't know about yet, such as broader availability -- after all, the Chronos we first spotted in the States was something of a Best Buy exclusive. You'd think the ATIV branding would have to signify something, but history says otherwise.

Wonder what a Nexus 7 / Kindle Fire / iPad Mini fighter from Microsoft would look like? You may find out soon, as the Wall Street Journal has just posted a "breaking news" alert that it's heard Microsoft is developing a new lineup of Surface tablets (which it's confirmed before) including a 7-inch version, which it expects to take into mass production later this year. We've seen hints of smaller tablets already, with recent Windows 8 policy changes allowing devices featuring lower-res screens. It's filled out a few other details now, crediting the info to unnamed sources familiar with its product plans who claim Microsoft realized it needed something to compete with the smaller competition (shocker). The report ends with a footnote on the rumored Microsoft-branded phone, which is said to still be in testing but component suppliers are not sure if it will actually come to market. While we wait for further updates, consider this your opportunity to make suggestions on what should change in Redmond's second assault on slates.

Flash memory advancements usually sing the same tune: faster, smaller and high-density. Improve one of these attributes, and you've go the makings of a better chip on your hands. Samsung is focusing on the latter, announcing the mass production of its 10 nanometer 128-gigabit three-bit multi-level-cell NAND flash. That mouthful translates into flash chips with more memory per cell in a small form factor. Sammy says the new chip is capable of 400Mbps, and claims the highest density in the industry. The new silicon will be used to expand the company's supply of 128GB memory cards and high-volume solid state drives. It's also well positioned to be a better part for devices with embedded NAND storage, which Samsung hopes will keep it competitive. You'll find Samsung's announcement and all the granular details after the break.

Valve's MOBA outstripped Blizzard's World of Warcraft
Valve’s Dota 2 surpassed League of Legends as the most played ‘core’ PC title in the first quarter of 2013, according to a report.
As picked up by Games Industry, the report covers PC gaming in North America and Europe based on the DFC Intelligence PC Game Meter service, which combines data from multiple sources, including real-time stats from Xfire’s 23 million users.
Usage of both Dota 2 and League of Legends vastly outstripped the next title in line, Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft.
“Usage of League of Legends has been steady the past year and surprisingly the huge success of Dota 2 did not seem to cut into its popularity as much as would be expected," said DFC analyst Jeremy Miller.
The combined usage of the top 20 PC games was up 22 per cent for the first quarter of 2013 compared to that of 2012, and up eight per cent compared to the fourth quarter of 2012.

Leading chipmaker Intel has showcased its latest quad-core tablet processors at the firm's annual IDF Bejing conference.
Known only as "Bay Trail" the chip could have a significant on the next-generation of tablet devices, providing additional power, whilst allowing for slimmer designs and longer battery life.
PC makers including the likes of HP, Dell, Lenovo and Acer could all look to reap the benefits of the chip within future tablet products, including the firms' next batch of Windows 8 tablets, which would certainly benefit from the quad-core Bay Trail.
Bay Trail is an "entirely new Atom micro-architecture… will [enable] the most powerful Atom processor to-date, doubling the computing performance of Intel's current-generation tablet offering," said Tan Weng Kuan, vice president and general manager of the Mobile Communications Group, Intel China, at this year's IDF.
The new chip design bundles together four updated Atom cores, which are capable of matching the power of traditional Intel processors in terms of performance.
Expected to feature in new tablet devices by the end of the year, Bay Trail is Intel's first redesign of the Atom chip since its launch back in 2008.

Microsoft has released its third patch to try to fix wireless troubles with the Surface RT tablet.
The new patch is designed to stop some system crashes that are caused by certain Wi-Fi issues. The fix also improves Wi-Fi to handle a wide range of access points, and resolves some ‘limited’ connectivity issues.
There Surface Pro has also received a patch that aims to fix a bug that disables the Wi-Fi driver when airplane mode is toggled. As well as this, the new patch smoothes out a few connectivity glitches with the Touch cover and Surface Type. It adds support for Japanese keyboards on North American hardware, and resolves an issue with on screen touch navigation in the UEFI boot menu.
To check for updates on your Surface tablet, click Settings, then Change PC Settings, under PC Settings select Windows Update, and click Check For Updates.
