Games publisher Ubisoft has disabled its digital download service uPlay following a breach, which allowed users to obtain games for free.
The exploit, which was found by a Russian hacking group, allowed users to download an executable file, which when run, tricked the service into believing the user had already purchased a title and granted the download.
Along with uPlay's wide portfolio of existing titles, users were able to get their hands on the yet to be announced Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, the standalone expansion to Ubisoft's highly acclaimed Far Cry franchise.
Following the exploit, Ubisoft took the decision to suspend download through the service temporary, until the issue could be resolved.
"[We are] aware of the issue and are working to resolve it quickly,” the publisher told Polygon. "No personal information was compromised. Uplay's PC download service will be unavailable until the problem is fixed however all other Uplay services remain available.”
The issue follows in the footsteps of rival publisher EA's games service Origin, which suffered asimilar setback recently, as an exploit within the software effectively left users' PCs vulnerable to malicious attacks.

EA's SimCity will make its way onto Mac this summer, and players will receive both Mac and PC versions with one purchase.
The game will be available as an exclusive digital release via Origin as well as other selected online retailers.
Fans who purchase SimCity will be able to play the game on Mac and PC regardless of which version they buy, as well as access their cities from across both platforms.
Gamers who have previously purchased SimCity for PC, either as a physical or a digital copy will receive the Mac version as a free download on Origin on June 11th.
“We didn’t want to make any compromises when it came to the Mac so we created a native version that is optimised for the hardware and OSX,” said Lucy Bradshaw, Senior Vice President and General Manager of EA’s Maxis Label

The top games and franchises as voted for by game journalists
Develop’s ranking of the best games of all time as voted for by games critics is now live, and below we have the breakdown of the top five.
For the new volume of the Develop 100, published in association with Ukie, we pooled votes from over 200 journalists, covering online, print, broadcast and specialist press, each of whom submitted a list of up to ten games they felt were the best yet created.
If you bought last year's Develop 100 on iOS (via Develop's magazine app), the new listing is available as a free update.
Alternatively, we've cut the price of the book - which includes both last year's list of the world's most commercially successful studios and this new listing - at the reduced price of £1.49. This latest edition of the Develop 100 is also available in the browser here.
[h=3]THE TOP FIVE GAMES[/h]1. Half-life 2
2. BioShock
3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4. Portal
5. Mass Effect 2
Valve-developed shooter Half-Life 2 has emerged as the most popular game of all time, according to input from hundreds of professional video games critics
The ground-breaking title, released in 2004, has been eulogised by critics, developers and gamers alike over the last decade, dazzling them with its impressive graphics from the Source Engine, its game-changing physics engine, and the large-scale story of a dystopian future where its tyrannical rulers gradually lose control.
In second place is Irrational’s BioShock, another triple-A title that enthralled with its artistic vision and tense gameplay.
Nintendo 64 classic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time makes it into third, loved by critics for its sprawling landscape, epic story of good and evil and ingenious dungeons and puzzles.
Half-Life 2 was not the only Valve-developed title in the Critics’ Choice list, with Half-Life and Portal also in the top 10, and Counter-Strike, Portal 2 and Team Fortress 2 securing places in the rest of the list.
BioWare’s Mass Effect 2 meanwhile rounds up the top five, a game which realised the huge potential hinted at in the original Mass Effect, with decisions resulting in real consequences by the end of the journey.
Below we have a breakdown of the top five game franchises, after counting the number of titles in a series as voted for by game critics.
A number of studios saw multiple entries in the list, including Nintendo EAD, Rockstar North and BioWare, while franchises that dominated counted among them Metal Gear Solid, Mass Effect, Mario, The Legend of Zelda and Grand Theft Auto.
[h=3]THE TOP FIVE GAME FRANCHISES[/h]1. Mario
2. The Legend of Zelda
3. Half-Life
4. Portal
5. Grand Theft Auto
With its long history and strong back-catalogue of games in the Mario and Legend of Zelda series, it's no surprise to see Nintendo's leading characters take up the top two spots of the list, with the duo synonymous with its own console platforms.
Having taken up two spots in our top ten, Half-Life eases its way into third spot, despite having only two entries, while Valve's first-person puzzle Portal also achieves the same feat.
Rockstar's hit and critically acclaimed series Grand Theft Auto rounds up the top five.
Sequels and series prospered throughout the list, with seven games in the top ten counting as direct follow-ons or spiritual successors to other games. There are just six games in the 100 that have never had a sequel and were original IP; namely Journey, Grim Fandango, Minecraft, Rez, Braid and Okami.
And 27 games on the list are games that are second-in-a-series, such as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, or a direct sequel to another title in a franchise, like Super Mario Galaxy 2.
After the Critics’ Choice list, three further volumes of the Develop 100 will be published this year. We will reveal which insightful metrics they will use at a later date.

After a successful trial in America, Facebook has started charging British users as much as £10 to send a message to a celebrity.
The service works out how much a message will cost depending on how popular the celebrity is. For instance, sending a message to Olympic diver Tom Daley – who has over 1.4m likes – will set you back £10.68, whereas messaging rapper Snoop Lion will cost you £10.08.
Other celebrities on Twitter who have not received quite as many ‘likes’ can be contacted for the standard rate of 71p. This is also how much users will be charged to contact other ‘ordinary’ people who are outside their circle of friends.
"The system of paying to message non-friends in their inbox is designed to prevent spam while acknowledging that sometimes you might want to hear from people outside your immediate social circle,” reads a statement from Facebook.
"We are testing a number of price points in the UK and other countries to establish the optimal fee that signals importance."

Microsoft will end official support for Windows XP in exactly one year’s time, but those intent on keeping it alive may have to pay a small fortune for additional support.
Introduced in 2001, about 40 per cent of business desktops are still running Windows XP, according to new figures by application migration specialist Camwood.
"The message that Microsoft is switching off the lights for Windows XP is being received loud and clear by the IT community but it would appear that the business doesn't understand the perils of remaining on XP after 8 April 2014," said Camwood chief executive Adrian Foxall.
Although official support ends next year, that won’t be the very end, as those willing to pay between $200 and $500 a year will receive custom support. Gartner warns that custom support can double in price from year to year ‘as the product moves further away from the end support’.
So for those still running XP, now is the time to decided whether to begin a migration to Windows 7 or 8, or prepare to pay Microsoft for custom support.
Migrating from XP to Windows 7 could cost an upwards of $1,274 per desktop, reports Gartner. This is three times the cost of migrating from XP to Windows Vista.

Francesco Santini was looking into the possibilities of stand-alone printing with the Solidoodle. He choose the PengPod 700, a tablet that runs a full Linux distribution and turned it into a standalone interface for the SD2. 'So, in summary, I now have a fully-functional touchscreen pronterface installation that can drive the Solidoodle, for a total cost of 110$. No assembly, soldering, firmware modding required. Just a little bit of fiddling with Linux (if required, I can post a step-by-step guide, or prepare an ad-hoc linux image).'"

A LucasFilm representative confirmed that production on Star Wars 1313 and what's rumored to be Star Wars: First Assault has ceased following yesterday's closure of LucasArts by Disney. Speaking to the BBC, LucasFilm spokesperson Miles Perkins said, "Both current Star Wars games projects have been halted."
A LucasArts representative previously indicated to Game Informer that Star Wars 1313 could be released via external licensing. However, a Kotaku sourcetold that site the chances of that happening are "effectively zero."
"It is worth noting that we are looking for proven external partners who can help us provide video games to our fans," the LucasArts rep told Game Informer. "We still believe in the video game industry, we still will provide Star Wars games, we're just looking at different models rather than internal production... They're evaluating everything. There's always a possibility that it [Star Wars 1313] can still come out via licensing."
The last we'd seen of Star Wars 1313 was an "inaccurate" PlayStation Germany posting, which said the game would be available on PS3 this year. Leaked materials indicated Star Wars: First Assault as a multiplayer shooter coming to XBLA, although LucasArts had yet to officially confirm the game or any details surrounding it.

It's easy to chop and change components in spacious towers, but small PCs need upgrading, too. If your stunted desktop has fallen into the "minimum system requirements" category for the latest games, then maybe the newly announced ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU Mini graphics card will interest you. Quite the mouthful, we know, but its long name contrasts with its small size -- the dual-slot, 2GB card measures 6.7 inches on its longest edge, shaving almost 3 inches off the reference design. There's no reason you can't put the card in a regular case, of course, but it's intended mainly for compact rigs with mini ITX or micro ATX motherboards. We don't have pricing or release info yet, but if the cost of NVIDIA's GTX 670 is anything to go by, expect to drop at least a trio of Benjamins on the petite version. Glamor shots and all the finer specs are available at the source links below.

Upcoming RPG epic The Witcher 3 will de free of the shackles of DRM on PC.
The news will be applauded by the gaming community, which has become vocally tired of draconian security measures that more often than not result in the official product being more prohibitive to users than the pirated version.
"We are trying to get rid of DRM," lead gameplay designer Maciej Szczesnik told Kotaku. "If someone wants to pirate a game, eventually he will."
CD Projekt Red MD Adam Badowski added: "Which is bad, of course, but you can't do anything about it, so. We want to give the best user experience possible. When we removed DRM, people on those torrents were actually asking people not to download our game, because we weren't using DRM."
The studio also promised to support the game with post-release DLC, some of which may be free but some of which might be premium.

As if the news wasn’t bad enough for Star Wars fans…
Kotaku has word that prior to the game’s cancellation yesterday at the hands of new owners Disney, George Lucas had personally given the in-development Star Wars 1313 a new direction – it was to be re-worked as a tale based on bounty hunter Boba Fett.
A Fett-themed tale would certainly be in keeping with the grittier take on the Star Wars universe and focus on the Coruscant underworld that 1313 had promised.
And it gets worse – while Disney has suggested that it will be willing to license out its gaming IP to other studios, insiders have reportedly said that there’s little hope that 1313 will now ever see the light of day.
"They ended up with movie tech that wouldn't fit in a game, and game tech that wouldn't fit in a movie," an anonymous source stated. "1313 was always in danger of not being made."

Total War: Arena is free to play because its multiplayer battles requires the huge player base that studios can build quickly if the game is cost-free, says lead designer James Russell.Speaking to us just after the UK studio revealed Total War: Arena at GDC, Russell insisted that Arena’s free to play model isn’t ‘pay to win’. “Fundamentally if we want to take multiplayer to the next level we need a massive userbase,” he said. “One reason for that is to make matchmaking better. Matchmaking is faster and you get into battles quicker the more players you have. Because we want these team-based battles – up to 10 versus 10 – it needs a huge player population.”Microtransactions seem to inspire a special kind of anger from certain parts of the game playing community, but Creative Assembly promises that it is being careful and considerate with its move into free to play.“The first is the reason why we’re doing this is to make this great multiplayer experience…to have a player population on a different level,” said Russell. “What I should emphasise on the sort of monetisation philosophy that we want to follow is that we really want to focus on what we call ‘accelerators’. So we could have loads of premium content, consumables that help you win battles, but that is not what we want to focus on.”“What we want to focus on is accelerators that help, let you level-up your character faster so you get to high-level content more quickly,” he added. “Just to be really clear: our intention is to make the vast majority of content available to everyone for free as long as they earn it. The focus of monetisation is really around enhancing the speed at which you get access.”

Both Viking and Micron plan to ship cards that combine DRAM and NAND flash on a standard DDR3 DIMM. The cards will have twice as much NAND flash as volatile memory. For example, the non-volatile DIMMs will come in capacities ranging from 4GB of DRAM to 16GB and 8GB of flash to 32GB of flash. Micron also sees its NVDIMM card being used as a storage tier, as cache for RAID systems, system check pointing, full system persistence, data logging, de-duplication and fast access to metadata. Without providing specifics, Viking said the NVDIMM cards will cost roughly a few hundred dollars each, more than a standard DDR3 DIMM module but still inexpensive enough for server and storage admins to consider for boosting application performance.
