The Chinese are going to have a very, very hard time kicking the Windows XP habit. The deadline for the retirement of Microsoft's most successful operating system ever is eight months from tomorrow: April 8, 2014. That's the day when the Redmond, Wash. company is to deliver the last XP security update. According to analytics company Net Applications, 37.2% of the globe's personal computers ran Windows XP last month. If Microsoft's estimate of 1.4 billion Windows PCs worldwide is accurate, XP's share translates into nearly 570 million machines. In the U.S., 16.4% of all personal computers ran Windows XP in July, or about one in six, Net Applications' data showed. But in China, 72.1% of the country's computers relied on the soon-to-retire operating system last month, or nearly three out of every four systems."

Individuals can buy the smartphone-cum-PC for $780 at the moment, but Canonical is also offering business bundles of 100 handsets, including a month of support, for $80,000. Bloomberg is the first business to opt for the bundle — but it will get its money back if the project isn't fully funded." August 8th, 2013, 23:32 Posted By: wraggster
The PC will have no trouble holding its own against PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this holiday season, say experts.
Publishers, vendors and retailers have told PCR that next-generation consoles present an opportunity for greater PC game and accessory sales going into Q4 and 2014.
With Xbox One due November for £429 and the PS4 out in time for Christmas at £349, the prices of next-generation consoles are similar to low and mid-level gaming PCs currently on the market.
“[Next-gen consoles] present a very sizeable and profitable opportunity to the PC market,” Focus Multimedia’s software brand manager Alan Wild told PCR. The firm has 70 games out this year and distributes the popular Angry Birds boxed games to retail.
“For hardcore gamers, they want the hardware and tech that delivers the best gaming experience. It’s all too easy to be swayed by the more mainstream ‘console glamour and clamour’ and forget that there’s already a massive gaming audience hungry for a choice of new PC games in store.”
Excalibur Publishing’s head of marketing Richard Barclay added: “PC game sales have benefitted massively from the long delay in new consoles arriving to market. They’re also looking better than ever before and these two facts alone have combined to see an eight per cent increase in PC sales worldwide during 2012. The proliferation of download sites and High Street retailers looking to offer such a service themselves will further improve sales figures.”
Several indies have recognised a rise in demand for gaming PCs, with Garry Stonehouse from Gbiz IT Computers saying they’ve been asked for more this year than ever before. Meanwhile, distributor VIP Computers says gaming is a huge growth area for the firm, including notebooks. “We expect this market to really take off in Q3 and Q4,” said ASUS product manager Mark Lynch.
Accessories specialist Gioteck also says the PC gaming market is more robust and less cyclical than the console sector, with PC controllers enjoying growth. It’s bringing a new PC range to market in mid-2014.
“It is our view that the PC market is under-serviced in terms of affordable well designed product and we certainly see great opportunities for growth in the UK and Europe,” commented Alan Jones, Gioteck General Manager.
Colin Woodley, business manager at gaming monitor brand Eizo, also believes the PC gaming market is on the up, with the firm’s R&D team in Japan excited by potential growth. The company is pushing its Foris FS2333 monitor (pictured) in the UK.
However, Nordic Games believes the PC gaming sector could quieten down briefly around the launch of next-gen consoles.
“It would be reasonable to expect some diversion from PC games who are also early console adopters, but we would anticipate this to appear as a blip as opposed to any long-term change,” Nik Blower, PR, marketing and franchise director, told PCR.
“The outlook for PC gamers is very good – from our point of view there is no bubble to burst.”

After cutting the price of its Surface RT tabs last month, Microsoft has given its high-end Windows 8 models a similar goosing. As the product's gdgt Score of 75 indicates, reviews were generally positive but somewhat mixed. Tech writers praised the Pro's 1080p touch screen and ability to handle the sizable slate of Windows apps, functioning well as a laptop with the purchase of its keyboard cover. They questioned its value proposition, but those concerns should be mitigated by the price cut.

Looks like Instagram is one-upping Vine with the addition of a brand new feature. Available today, the 4.1 version of the social imaging app brings the ability to import videos from your media library -- meaning that you don't have to shoot that video directly in Instagram. Once imported, you can trim it down to fit within its 15-second parameters. Also new is the ability to instantly straighten crooked photos in iOS -- tap the Straighten icon and the app will do the rest. There's something for Android users, as well: the update brings video functionality to those of you sporting Ice Cream Sandwich. More details on the upgrade in the source link below.

Toys that connect to desktop and tablet computers are presenting retailers with a fresh margin-making opportunity this Q3.
The Disney Infinity video game launches on August 18th for PC and mobile devices, as well as Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360, PS3. Additional figures can be stocked (pictured, right) which consumers can purchase to unlock new content within the game, like levels and characters.
Then there’s Angry Birds Star Wars II from Rovio which lands on app stores on September 19th. Users can now place Telepod toys from Hasbro (see above) on their tablet or smartphone to play with different in-game characters – and over 30 of these will be available at retail.
Activision originally created the ‘toys to life’ category back in late 2011 with Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure for consoles and PC. This was followed by a sequel – Skylanders Giants – last year. However, the latest version of the kids’ game, Skylanders: Swap Force, has ditched PC in favour of consoles only. This launches in the UK on October 18th.
The Skylanders franchise has generated more than $1 billion in worldwide retail sales since its launch in late 2011.

Blizzard will add Connected Realms to massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft some time after the release of Patch 5.4.A Connected Realm is a set of two or more standard realms that have been permanently linked and behave as if they were one cohesive realm. If you're playing on a Connected Realm you'll be able to join the same guilds, access a single Auction House, run the same raids and dungeons and join other players to complete quests.Blizzard said it decided to add the feature because, over time, shifts in player population have created a "less-than-optimal play experience" for those on less popular realms, making it tougher to beat group content."Our goal with Connected Realms is to give players on lower-population realms more opportunities to group up, compete, and connect with other players to take on Azeroth's bigger challenges," Blizzard said on Battle.net."That sort of interaction is a big part of what makes World of Warcraft fun, and this feature will help us deliver that experience to even more players."Last week Blizzard announced that the number of World of Warcraft monthly subscribers had dropped to 7.7 million - comparable to the audience the MMO had in 2007, shortly before first expansion The Burning Crusade helped it break the eight million million mark. The figure marked a notable decline for World of Warcraft in recent times, having fallen fairly steadily from a highpoint of 12 million subscribers in October 2010 - two months before Cataclysm.Blizzard said it took the decision to add Connected Realms now because of improvements to its cross-realm tech."Our cross-realm technology has continued to evolve since it was first developed for joining players in dungeons," Blizzard said. "It's now at a point where we can create seamless worlds made up of multiple individual realms, and we think there are some really positive benefits to that."Blizzard is yet to decide which realms will be made part of a Connected Realm, but it has decided to connect realms only to other realms of the same type, so, PvE to PvE and so on. It doesn't know how many realms will make up a Connected Realm, either."There should be no limitations," Blizzard added. "We want the experience to be seamless, and we expect it work as if you're suddenly part of a much more active realm."

A blazing sun and the outdoors don't exactly make for an ideal computing environment -- unless you're toting a ruggedized laptop that harnesses energy from sunlight like theUbuntu-running Sol. Created mainly for use in developing countries with intermittent (or non-existent) electricity, it's equipped with solar panels that soak up the sun when unfolded. According to OMG Ubuntu, its creators from Canadian company WeWi Telecommunications claim Sol's battery, which can last for up to ten hours, only takes two hours to charge via solar energy.
The device's official website reveals little else, but according to the nuggets of information we've stumbled upon, Sol will pack an Intel processor, WiFi connectivity and an HD display, with an optional satellite module for internet connectivity. While full availability details have yet to be announced, a countdown timer on its website hints at more info in just under two days. Ghana will reportedly see the hardware arrive first with an accompanying $300 price tag. Though the notebook isn't exactly wildly affordable, it's at least a bit cheaper than Samsung's 2011 take on a sunbeam-fueled laptop.

EA’s second-screen experience for battlefield 4 won’t be available to players on Xbox 360 or PS3.
Speaking to Engadget, Battlelog’s assistant producer Jesper Nielsen said that the reason is the web-based tech powering the project.
"When we set out to build [Battlelog in Battlefield 4], our biggest goal from the start was really to bring a better Battlelog to the console players," Nielsen stated.
"Battlelog is powered by the web, and that has a lot of implications. There are a lot of different things you can do, things you can do faster, rather than building stuff in native code.
"It's going to be a lot easier for us to actually update things from the in-game Battlelog than would otherwise be the case. You'd have to do patches normally; here we can actually do things almost by the flick of a finger."
Previously Battlelog had a higher engagement rate on PC than console because PC players were required to launch the game from the web-based Battlelog service directly. Nielsen also admits that DICE placed too high a barrier to entry on the console versions of Battlelog.
"At some point, maybe half a year before, they connected their Origin account to this email address and now they forgot what it is,” he added. “And they tried, they can't remember it, so they give up.”
DICE is hoping to overcome this with the next-gen consoles by incorporating a QR-scanner into the Battlelog mobile app that can be used “in tandem with their console”, although details of this are a little vague.

Bohemia Interactive has announced that the single player campaign for Arma 3 won’t arrive until after the game is officially released.
The developer now plans to release in the campaign across three free DLC episodes called Survive, Adapt and Win.
The game will still ship with 12 single player showcase missions – as well as “three faction showcases, nine multiplayer scenarios, a set of 10 firing drill challenges, over 20 vehicles, more than 40 weapons, five factions, the powerful scenario editor and modding support” spread across two islands sized 270km² and 20 km² respectively.
“This was not a decision we made lightly,” Arma 3’s project lead Joris-Jan van ‘t Land said. “As game creators, we love developing and playing through campaigns so, to those awaiting ours, we say: sorry for the delay.
“After talking a lot about a focus on quality over the last year, it simply did not feel right to compromise now. Rather than pushing back the entire game, we launch this year with an awesome package – a splendid kick off for the Arma 3 experience.”
Arma 3 is currently scheduled for a Q3 2013 release although PC players can buy the beta release on Steam right now. An exact release date is scheduled to be confirmed later this week.

At the recent DEF CON conference over the weekend, vendor were selling all kinds of gear. But one device stood out from all the others: the Wi-Fi Pineapple — an all in one Wi-Fi hacking device that costs only $80 (a lot cheaper than a PwnPlug) and powered by a very vibrant open source community of users. Pineapple creator Darren Kitchen said that 1.2 Pineapple's per minute were sold on the first day of DEF CON (and then sold out). The Pineapple run Linux, based on OpenWRT, is packed with open source tools including Karma, DNS Spoof, SSL Strip, URL Snarf, Ngrep, and more and is powered by g a 400MHz Atheros AR9331 MIPS processor, 32MB of main memory and a complete 802.11 b/g/n stack. Is this a tool that will be used for good — or for evil?

Id Software co-founder John Carmack asked an internal management team whether he could discuss Doom 4 at this year's QuakeCon event, but was told to avoid the subject.
Speaking during a Q&A session which followed his QuakeCon keynote, Carmack was asked by a fan to discuss the progress of the next-generation Doom title.
"I can't," Carmack replied, "I actually asked about whether I could say anything related to the development, and the answer was, no, I couldn't."

Thought the Surface RT's $150 price drop was enticing? Hold on to your wallet: Microsoft's at it again. Over the weekend, Redmond quietly took $100 off of both its 64 and 128GB Surface Pro slates, bringing their base prices to $799 and $899, respectively. According to the fine print, the discount will hold until August 29th, but we wouldn't be surprised to the sale drag on if it moves units.
"We've been seeing great worldwide success with Surface RT pricing and keyboard-cover promotions over the past several months and our proud to offer Surface Pro at more affordable prices starting today," a Microsoft spokesperson told Engadget. "People who buy Surface love Surface, and we're eager for more people to their hands on Surface and share their excitement." It's not a staggering price reduction, but it's certainly enough to make buyers on the fence raise an eyebrow. You can check out the slate's new sticker price at the adjacent source link, but don't rush yourself -- you've got almost a month, after all.

Former Ouya exclusive Polarity is gearing up for a release on PC.
Creator Craig Littler says the decision is down to the failure to negotiate exclusivity terms with Ouya.
"I tried to negotiate with Ouya to remain exclusive but they were fairly resistant to change,” he told Eurogamer. “As such I think there will be plenty of devs who just use them as 'another platform' rather than committing to them exclusively.
"I understand their motivations, my game is hardly a blockbuster but by the same token I want as many people to play it as possible so I can fund my next project.
“I always thought the Ouya was an exciting platform, and something I wanted to support and the best way to do that would be to make an exclusive game for it.”
Littler has also confirmed that he is adding Oculus Rift support to the game. Polarity is currently up for consideration on Steam Greenlight.
Last month it was confirmed that former Ouya poster child exclusive TowerFall is also making the move to PC.
