With several companies developing technologies that can turn any surface into a touchscreen, it should be widely available soon. Those who want to try it out before it's cool, however, should look towards Ubi Interactive's software that combines the talents of Microsoft's Kinect for Windows sensor and a projector. So long as the software's installed on a Windows 8 computer, the sensor tracks and detects movements users make on the projected image. Interactions are the same as any tablet or smartphone, including launching icons by tapping on them and expanding areas with pinch-to-zoom. Merely a concept in 2012, the software is now available on Ubi's website with prices ranging from $149 to $1,499, depending on the display size and the type of customer support. Sounds like even an Average Joe can nab one, assuming they already have a projector and one of Microsoft's $250 motion / voice detectors.

You’ve overclocked your graphics card and water-cooled your processor but there’s still something missing from your custom gaming PC.
Oh you silly sausage, you’ve only gone and forgot to install a toaster!
Thankfully US PC retailer CrazyPC is offering just that – a toaster that’s designed to be installed in a PC’s 5.25 inch drive bay.
It requires a USB port and 4-pin molex connector to work and will dump the hot air out of the back of the case providing you’ve got a free PCI slot. The included Windows software allows users to control the length of the toasting process and the heat intensity. There’s also a tray for collecting the crumbs.
The site usefully specifies that toast is sold separately.

Specs of Nokia’s Windows RT 8.1 tablet reveal that the device will come with a detachable keyboard/stand.
Microsoft-news.com has posted a series of specs for the Nokia tablet, and while there’s a chance they could be a load of horse pucky - they’ve been submitted by an ‘anonymous source’ - if there does turn out to be some truth in them, it seems Nokia’s foray into the world of Windows tablets might look quite familiar.
If the specs are to be believed, there’s a detachable keyboard/stand which connects to the tablet, making it work, and probably look, similar to Microsoft’s Touch/Type covers for the Surface tablet.
Other specs include a Snapdragon 800 2.15Hz processor, 10.1-inch 1080p display with five-point multi-touch and wide viewing angles, 32GB of built-in storage, extra battery in the keyboard/stand, USB, HDMI, and wireless N Cell compatibility.
The source also claims the device will be manufactured by Compal and will come in Cyan matte colour – so it might look like the Surface’s popular blue version as well.
It’s rumoured that Nokia will unveil the tablet sometime in September.

A StarCraft 2 mod that turns the much-beloved sci-fi RTS into a World of Warcraft-like MMORPG has launched on Kickstarter. StarCraft Universe, previously known as World of StarCraft, will allow players to create a character and log in to an alternate-history StarCraft universe, where dark forces and Zerg/Protoss hybrids run amok. The Blizzard-blessed project seeks $80,000 in funding.
This amount will allow mod creator Ryan Winzen and his team to not only construct additional pylons, but focus solely on creating the game, and subsequently release an open beta in early 2014. As expected, there are plenty of stretchgoals and nifty rewards, including a Zerg character class at $100,000 funding, which just sounds like all kinds of fun.
The game's Kickstarter page has more info and your opportunity to toss some minerals and vespene gas that way if you believe in it..

While Capcom offers Street Fighter 4 and Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Editionthrough Steam already, players have to register a Games For Windows Live account on top of Steam for multiplayer. Capcom's Neidel "Haunts" Crisan saysUltra Street Fighter 4 will forgo GFWL entirely for Steam.
Crisan tweeted the news earlier today, and so we followed up with Capcom. The company confirmed the news and added that Ultra Street Fighter 4 would be available on Steam and "other digital distribution partners" when it launches next year. Capcom also clarified it hasn't "made any announcements regarding our broader PC lineup."
Ultra Street Fighter 4, due for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, was announced at this year's EVO fighting game tournament. As the latest re-issue of Street Fighter 4, this entry in Capcom's flagship fighting series adds five new characters in Elena, Rolento, Hugo, Poison and a fifth, unknown character who will make his/her fighting game debut.

The recently launched Humble Origin Bundle allows you to pay what you want for Dead Space 3, the original Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, Crysis 2: Maximum Edition, Medal of Honor, and my personal favourite, Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box.Dead Space 3. Didn't this just come out, like, six months ago?
Pay more than the average - currently a measly $4.64 (about £3) - for Battlefield 3 and the Sims 3, along with its two expansions in the Starter Pack. It's worth noting that Dead Space 3, Battlefield 3, and the Sims 3 are only available on Origin (this is the Origin Bundle, after all), but the rest all come with Steam keys as well. Most of these games are PC only, except for The Sims 3, which is also available on Mac.Unusually, EA/Origin is donating all of its Humble Bundle proceeds to charity, rather than letting buyers choose how much goes where. They can still decide how to split up the revenue between a tip for the Humble Bundle organisers and the five charities in question, i.e. the Human Rights Campaign, Watsi, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, the American Red Cross, and the American Cancer Society.Purchasing all of these games new would come in at somewhere in the neighborhood of $215, making a few quid an astronomical savings for those interested in, well, any of these games. The Humble Origin Bundle will continue for 14 more days until Wednesday, 28th August.

International Dota 2 Championship doubles previous year's total
[h=3]Valve[/h]
Valve's global Dota 2 championship attracted a high of 1 million simultaneous viewers, doubling the previous week's total.
The five-day International Dota 2 Championship was held in Seattle last weekend. It was broadcast by three separate online services: Valve's own service, Twitch, and Gamefy in China.
The peak of 1 million concurrent viewers is a cumulative figure taken from all three broadcasts. However, it excludes viewers of numerous television broadcasts, and attendees of "Pubstomp" viewing events in more than 40 countries worldwide.
The tournament was contested by 16 of the best Dota 2 teams. Between Valve's contribution and money raised by the Dota 2 community, the total prize pool was $2.8 million.
Along with League of Legends, Dota 2 is one of the most important games in the flourishing market for eSports. In July, Riot Games confirmed that League of Legends is now officially recognised as a professional sport by the U.S. State Department - the first time a game has received the designation, and a major milestone in the development of the scene.
In November last year, Valve signed a deal with Nexon to publish Dota 2 in Japan and South Korea, the latter of which is one of the world's leading countries for eSports.

Sega and Sports Interactive have officially announced inevitable sim sequel Football Manager 2014.
The game apparently boasts over 1,000 improvements and will for the first time be available on Linux. New cloud save tech means players will be able to resume their campaign from any machine.
Steam Workshop will also be integrated allowing players to easily customise the title and share their efforts with the Steam community.
Those who pre-order the game from a participating retailer will also get access to the beta two weeks ahead of its official release.
“Our unchanging goal in the development of the Football Manager series is to deliver the most authentic and immersive simulation of real-world football management wherever you may be in the world,” Sports Interactive boss Miles Jacobson stated.
“Players can now take charge of their team anywhere they can access a home computer, and with huge improvements to existing features plus the addition of loads of new stuff, can have the best Football Manager experience to date while doing so.”

JRPG all-stars project Project Phoenix has got off to an amazing start on Kickstarter.
The project launched yesterday with a target of $100,000. Having hit that within nine hours, it closed the day with funding having already surpassed $300,000.
The game brings together some of the biggest names in the world of Japanese RPGs including Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu and Final Fantasy illustrator Kiyoshi Arai as well as Diablo III and Valkyria Chronicles veteran Hiroaki Yura.
Other names are promised depending on how far the game gets on its stretch goals.
Project Phoenix is currently slated for release in mid-2015 on PC, Mac and Linux with talk of a separate smartphone version and perhaps even a release on PS4.

New submitter used2win32 writes with news that at least one investor is unhappy with the Surface inventory write off, claiming that Microsoft mislead investors who purchased stock during Q2 and Q3 by not announcing just how slow inventory was moving at the time"The class action lawsuit claims false and misleading information regarding sales performance of Windows RT based tablets. Microsoft has earned a U.S. $900 million write off and a market share of less that 1% to show for its Windows RT endeavors. Asus, Lenovo, HP, Samsung and HTC discontinued their models leaving Dell as the only OEM producing a Windows RT tablet."

Consumers are unwilling to shell out premium prices in order to purchase touchscreen laptops, according to Bob O’Donnell from American analyst firm IDC.
Speaking to Computerworld, O’Donnell states the disparity between IDC’s initial predictions – which estimated that 17 to 18% of all notebooks would be touchscreen-equipped by the end of this year – and the latest revised figures, which now sit at a level between 10 and 15%.
It is particularly bad news for Microsoft, whose flagship operating system Windows 8 was largely dependant on the success of both hybrid laptops and tablets, including the Windows Surface, which Microsoft itself recently admitted was behind schedule. Computer manufacturers have also been seen to sport overly-optimistic expectation concerning the sale of touchscreen laptops, with Acer’s president Jim Wong stating in May that roughly a third of all Acer laptops would include touchscreen displays by the end of 2013.
O’Donnell goes onto to suggest some advice for Microsoft if it wishes to recover sales of Windows 8, explaining that the release of Windows 8.1, which is said to fix several complaints with Windows 8, including the restoration of the Start button, later this year won’t be sufficient. ‘They should have restored the Start menu, too,’ he states, referring to Windows 8’s reliance on the new Metro interface, which provides a tablet-like fullscreen display of app tiles instead of the classic list interface.

August 14th, 2013, 23:11 Posted By: wraggster
May 2013 showed some promising results for IT, with year-on-year growth rates of 22.4 per cent in volume and 4.1 per cent in value compared to last year. This growth was mostly contributed by the B2B channel which grew by 58 per cent in volume and 6.5 per cent in value. The consumer channel showed mixed results growing by 2.5 per cent in value but declining by 1.7 per cent in volume.
Media tablets, software and communication devices were the biggest drivers of growth in the IT market. Media tablets grew by 82 per cent in sales units year-on-year in the Consumer Channel. Tablets growth is declining and may not be the engine of growth for IT for much longer. In March and April, the PC market survived the impact of various factors affecting its growth. However, in May, it suffered from decline.
Unit sales of notebooks dropped by 7.6 per cent in May compared to the same period last year in the consumer channel, however sales value only dropped by 6.1 per cent. This is the first month in 2013 when notebooks have shown growth in the average selling price (ASP) when compared to last year. Growth in ASP can be attributed to the availability of higher spec models at a more affordable price. Internal research on price and demand elasticity shows that £350 is a sweet spot for the PC market. There is a significant spike in sales as soon as high spec models come closer to the £350 price point. Given the ASP drop in high spec models to match consumers’ affordability, incremental innovation is critical to keep the PC market into growth.
The touchscreen interface has travelled all the way from 3.5-inch screen size format smartphones to 9.7- inch screen size format tablets. Initial touchscreen PCs sales have been positive. The question is can touchscreen give that incremental value growth to PCs in the long term? Sales value share was between six per cent and seven per cent of the notebooks market in the last three months. Initial success has been mostly in 11.6-inch, and prices are close to £350. Justifying the value for dual interface PCs on the large screen size format like 14-inch is a challenge.
There have been major game console launches this year and lots of smartphone launches are also scheduled throughout the second half of 2013. The challenge for touchscreen PCs is to justify their value and maintain sales growth in the long term, whilst maintaining a price premium and thus satisfying both manufacturers and consumers.

According to the ever-churning rumor mill, Blizzard Entertainment may be on the cusp of announcing a new expansion to World of Warcraft or Diablo III. The studio has just snagged a new trademark for The Dark Below and identified that trademark as "computer game software" and "downloadable electronic game."
The trademark could be for a new game or unannounced IP, but it's more likely the title of an upcoming expansion to one of Blizzard's big existing titles. Smart money is on Diablo III, since Blizz did tease its August 21st Gamescom press conference by saying it would, "capture the attention of the Heavens, Burning Hells, and all the shadowed places that lie between." We also know that Blizzard plans to show off a brand new cinematic at Gamescom -- cinematics tend to come with either new games or new expansions.
Any guesses on what The Dark Below might be?

Getting acquainted with Windows 8.1 has been a slow process that started early this year, but it looks like it'll finally hit shelves in roughly two months. According to an unnamed source cited by ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, the RTM build of the operating system is still on track to hit manufacturers by the end of August, and the OS -- along with new hardware carrying it -- will be publicly available come mid-October. Those hoping to get their hands on the near-final software ahead of time via MSDN or thesunsetting Technet are out of luck, however, as the outlet's tipster claims the final portions of 8.1 won't be obtainable through those means until general availability. If you need something to help pass the time until then, you can always dive into our in-depth hands-on with the update formerly known as Blue.

The long-rumoured PC version of Grand Theft Auto V has been mentioned by none other than Nvidia.
Videogamer reports that Nvidia's senior director of investor relations Chris Evenden told investors in a conference call last week that: "The PC market is evolving as entry level laptops face pressure from tablets. Yet sales of speciality PCs like gaming systems and work stations continue to grow.
“The disparity reflects how consumers use these different classes of PCs. Many consumers look for PC as a general purpose device they can use for browsing, email, social media and video.
"But much of this can be better served by a tablet. In contrast, gamers are preparing their systems for a strong roster of games coming this fall, including blockbuster franchises, such as Call of Duty: Ghosts, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Assassin's Creed 4."
This is not a confirmation, of course, and could be nothing more than a passing reference to a big IP.
Remember that Rockstar’s PC history is a mixed affair. Grand Theft Auto IV did make the jump to PC eventually, although gamers were critical of many aspects of the port. Other titles such as Red Dead Redemption have never been released on the platform.

The market for solid state drives (SSD) is booming – and some vendors have told PCR that demand is starting to outstrip supply.
Demand for the hard drives is so high that certain manufacturers such as Kingston are having to up their production schedules.
Global demand for SSDs is expected to grow by 75 per cent this year to 78 million units, according to brokers Nomura. PCR has learnt that others believe the demand could drum up the price of SSDs in the latter half of the year.
“Kingston has seen a huge jump in demand for SSDs this year in the consumer, corporate and data centre markets,” said Kingston UK sales account manager Jim Knee.
“As demand has risen, we have increased our production of drives in all market sectors. Fortunately for Kingston, we have great relationships with a number of NAND memory suppliers and can therefore currently meet demand with high quality chips.
“For any SSD producer who relies on a single source of NAND supply, it can be really tough to keep up and secure reliable deliveries.”
Kingston says it will continue to release products to support these markets, focusing on reduced NAND chip sizes, improved controller technology and increased capacity. It’s confident about the business going ahead, too.
“We are very optimistic about the growth in all SSD markets,” added Knee. “It has been claimed many times that the market has reached a turning point for SSDs. Whilst this claim is hard to quantify, we are certainly seeing a very large upswing in demand for SSDs.”
