Blizzard looks set to enter the MOBA market and do battle with League of Legends and DOTA.
‘Heroes of the Storm’ has been announced as the title of Blizzard’s MOBA game, which was previously titled ‘Blizzard All-Stars’.
The StarCraft, Diablo and World of Warcraft creator has released a short animated teaser for the game, and has said that further details will be uncovered at next month’s BlizzCon event.
“Set aside whatever you think you knew about Blizzard All-Stars, and get ready for what’s brewing at this year’s BlizzCon,” said Blizzard about the reveal.
Those interested in the two-day gaming convention, which takes place on November 8th and 9th in the Anaheim Convention Center in California, can purchase a virtual ticket from Blizzard, which will let them ‘attend’ the event via an online livestream.
Regardless of the game’s quality, some players might end up confused – the acronym for the game, ‘HOTS’, is already used by gamers to refer to Blizzard’s previous game StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm.

Canonical announced its free Ubuntu 13.10 Linux operating system (OS) release, on the same day as Microsoft's remedial Windows 8.1 service pack update. We speak to Canonical founder and Ubuntu creator Mark Shuttleworth who tells us what to expect."Adds reader jrepin:"Kubuntu Linux 13.10 has just been released and is available for download. It comes with KDE Software Compilation 4.11, a new application for discovering and installing software, a simpler way to manage your system users. and a new Network Manager applet gives a simpler UI for connecting to a range of network types. You can now setup Wifi networking from the installer making it easier to install updates and extra packages during the install."ZDNet has a fairly tepid review of the incremental rather than startling improvements of the new release, and notes "Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, due for release on 17 April next year, will now perhaps come as even more of a shock if its promised big changes are fully realised.

Letter from community manager suggests Agile development is getting a new role
DICE has declared war on the low framerates and high CPU usage experienced by beta testers of the upcoming Battlefield 4.
The studio has already churned out three game client and server updates in an attempt to combat the issues, which are mostly experienced by PC users.
While PCs are usually a great deal more powerful than an console, the systems aren't standardized, meaning the developers of Battlefield – and any PC game – have to spend extra time debugging multiple systems to ensure a smooth launch.
DICE chooses to gather real-world data from external beta testers to make sure they have enough information, but if and when information about bugs leak to the general public this strategy can pose some PR challenges.
In an attempt to nip skepticism about the game's perfomance in the bud, DICE community manager Vincent Vukovic has published a bug report – titled as a thank you to the beta testers – that glosses the steps the studio is taking to make sure the reported issues are fixed.
“Rest assured that we’re using the information we received to optimize the performance for the launch of the game,” he said.
“We also released three game client updates and a number of game server updates during the Beta to address some of these issues and to gather more information to ensure a smoother launch.”
“This was a true Beta, and as such all the crash reports that were generated during this period will actually help us make a better game.”
To some, the items Vukovic lists might look like user story cards from the Agile development pipeline along with a few sentences describing progress to release.
With Agile development gaining a wider acceptance in the games industry, it's worth considering that user stories can become front-page news on consumer sites if left to sit in the backlog for too long.
Using them as talking points for community managers is an interesting idea; as a story progresses through the pipline a studio can keep fans informed of how their concerns are being tackled.
It's a right clever use of a system rarely thought of in the context of community engagement.

Microsoft will abandon Windows XP on April 8th, 2014, but Google has other plans.
In a blog post, Google said it recognises that ‘hundreds of millions of users’ still rely on XP – including a good chunk of Chrome users.
So, Google will provide Chrome browser updates for Windows XP users for at least a year after Microsoft stops its support for the operating system.
The blog points out that ‘many organisations still run dozens or even hundreds of applications on XP and may have trouble migrating’.
Microsoft has responded to the news, telling El Reg of the possible vulnerabilities that come with keeping XP after official support ends: "Third parties may provide ongoing support for their applications, but it’s important to recognise that support will not address fixes and security patches in the core Windows kernel so new vulnerabilities can still be exploited even though applications might be updated."

The CEO of Intel has predicted that $99 (£61) tablets will be widespread this Christmas, alongside a number of other tech bargains.
During a conference call held with analysts, Brian Krzanich said that he also expected touchscreen-enabled laptops powered by Intel’s own Haswell processors to be available for $299 (£187), while hybrid devices that function as both a laptop and tablet would drop to $349 (£218).
“We [will] continue to see touch adoption come along,” Krzanich said.
Intel announced that it had exceeded revenue and profit expectations, with revenues increasing by five per cent to hit $13.48 billion (£8.43 billion).
Net income was also up, rising by 49 per cent from the previous quarter to reach 58 cents (36p) a share, equal with the same time last year. Previous predictions had set the expected value at 53 cents (33p).

Microsoft has launched Windows 8.1, the long-awaited update to its Windows 8 operating system.
The major update is said by Microsoft to fix many maligned aspects of the OS, including restoring the Start button to Windows 8’s desktop mode, improving the Metro Start screen, redesigning the Windows Store and adding “more extensive apps and services”.
Bing smart search and a higher level of customisation have also been added.
Windows 8.1 is a free update for Windows 8 users and can be downloaded from the Windows Store.
Windows 7 users can also update to Windows 8.1, for the same price as an upgrade to Windows 8.
The OS will be available for new devices and as a boxed product from tomorrow (Friday, October 18th).
“Windows 8.1 evolves the Windows vision for highly personalised computing while showcasing Microsoft’s continued commitment to rapid and responsive development,” said Microsoft in a statement.

If you have to keep using Windows XP for the next couple of years, you won't necessarily be stuck using an outdated web browser. Google now says that Chrome will get XP-compatible updates until "at least" April 2015, one year after Microsoft drops support for its aging OS. The extension should minimize the threat of browser-based exploits for those who can't transition to newer platforms all that quickly. While an OS upgrade would ultimately be the safest move for many users, it's good to see Google offering some love to older PCs.

Many Ultrabook fans have pined for Lenovo's Yoga 2 Pro given its blend of a 3,200 x 1,800 display, long battery life and a slim profile. Those people can finally act on their impulses, as Lenovo has quietly started selling the 13-inch folding convertible. For the $1,049 base price, buyers get a silver gray variant with a Haswell-based 1.7GHz Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive. An orange model normally costs $1,399 (currently $1,149), although that also includes a 1.6GHz Core i5, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Be sure to shop around before you pick up the new system, however. Best Buy is currently selling an entry-level Yoga 2 Pro for $1,000, and there's a chance you'll find similar bargains elsewhere.

Graphics cards vendor Nvidia doesn't need to lower prices across its range to compete with the new AMD R7/R9 graphics cards, a senior industry source has told PCR.
Their views come after rumours around Nvidia possibly lowering the price of its high-end Titan graphics card following the announcement of its upcoming rival AMD R9 290X.
"I thought Nvidia would lower its prices, but looking at the performance of [the other R7 and R9 cards], they don’t really have to," said the source.
"There isn't much performance gained in the new AMD cards, so I don’t think Nvidia will move - and if they do it won’t be by much."
However, our source also suggests that a price drop around the Titan could still be on the cards, and that Nvidia could launch a new Titan to better compete, following similar rumours earlier this year.
"Of course, the 290X it not going to be a cheaper card, so if there’s any product movement [from Nvidia] it could be on the Titans or on the 780," the source added.
When asked whether the market needs a new Titan, the source replied: "[The PC gaming market is] always performance hungry.
"It’s not about the need for this - it’s all about the want."

October 16th, 2013, 13:05 Posted By: wraggster
Christmas sales of PC hardware will be boosted this year by consumers looking to upgrade their gaming rig, Overclockers UK has said.
The online retailer predicted that the number of PC products launched this year, “including the new Intel Haswell and Ivybridge-E platforms, as well as new graphics cards from both AMD and Nvidia”, will “tempt” customers into upgrading during Q4.
Mark Purdy, marketing manager for Overclockers UK, added that the launch of the next-gen PS4 and Xbox One games consoles would also boost sales of the hardware.
“The imminent release of the new generation of consoles has created a lot of publicity for PC gaming,” he told PCR.
“With consoles running on PC architecture, we expect to see demand for PC upgrades as console games are released with higher quality versions for PC gamers.”
Purdy said that Overclockers had “redefined” their custom-built PC range and extended their standard warranty to two years in order to address the growing interest in the market.
He stated that the retailer expected sales to “definitely grow” when compared with previous years due to the renewed interest in PC hardware, despite competition heating up online.
“Christmas is the biggest time of year for retail and competition is increasing as online shopping becomes more popular with consumers,” he said.
“[But] we are already seeing the benefits of all the hard work we have done to improve our business and we expect this to continue through the peak season.”

Microsoft keeps adding features to sweeten the deal for its loyal search and browser users, with the latest addition bringing background-rendered pages to Bing when it's coupled with Internet Explorer 11. Much like how Google does this trick with Chrome, Redmond's browser starts downloading the top search result before you even click it, giving near-instant page loads. What's more, the software giant says this is done in a streamlined way so it doesn't eat up battery life on mobile devices. Shaving seconds off of search times should come as welcome news for ardent (and impatient) fans of Microsoft's browsing suite -- yes, even those on Windows 7.

AMD has yet to officially announce the R9 290 or R9 290X, but leaked performance charts suggest Nvidia’s Titan has been dethroned as the world’s fastest GPU.
Videocardz reports that said charts suggest the vanilla R9 290X offers a six per cent performance boost over the Titan – and with an almost certainly lower RRP.
The second tier R9 290, meanwhile, offers a similar performance advantage over the GTX 780.
It is also believed that AMD’s pair are very overclock-friendly, meaning that they can actually extend their advantage over Nvidia’s rivals to around eight or nine per cent.
Reports yesterday suggested that AMD’s R9s were initially supposed to be revealed today but have had their announcement pushed back to next week, possibly so AMD can wait and see what Nvidia’s expected GTX 770ti and other price cuts bring before playing its final cards.

One of the scariest games of recent memory is to arrive on Steam in time for Halloween later this month.
It’s not yet been revealed precisely when it will arrive on the service or how much it will cost, although developer Blue Isle Studios has revealed that the Steam version will include new content of some sort.
The game was recently patched to add Oculus Rift support, too, if you can bear the thought of how traumatic that must actually be.
The Arrival was released in March and is the sequel to the utterly horrific Slender: Eight Pages, which successfullyfreaked out the MCV team back in July of last year.

As a followup to Linus's opinion about people skeptical of the Linux random number generator, a new paper analyzes the robustness of /dev/urandom and /dev/random . From the paper: 'From a practical side, we also give a precise assessment of the security of the two Linux PRNGs, /dev/random and /dev/urandom. In particular, we show several attacks proving that these PRNGs are not robust according to our definition, and do not accumulate entropy properly. These attacks are due to the vulnerabilities of the entropy estimator and the internal mixing function of the Linux PRNGs. These attacks against the Linux PRNG show that it does not satisfy the "robustness" notion of security, but it remains unclear if these attacks lead to actual exploitable vulnerabilities in practice.'"Of course, you might not even be able to trust hardware RNGs. Rather than simply proving that the Linux PRNGs are not robust thanks to their run-time entropy estimator, the authors provide a new property for proving the robustness of the entropy accumulation stage of a PRNG, and offer an alternative PRNG model and proof that is both robust and more efficient than the current Linux PRNGs.

Valve has released a video showing how its new gaming controller will work with popular Steam games.
The video demonstrates how the Steam Controller works with titles such as Portal 2, Civilisation V and Counter Strike.
Designed as a keyboard-and-mouse replacement, the Steam Controller features a touchscreen in the centre of the device and a pair of trackpads around the outside, which use ‘super-precise’ haptic feedback, along with ‘dual linear resonant actuators’ to provide a variety of vibration feedback sensations.
Valve unveiled details about its Steam Controller in the same week it announced its own Linux-based operating system called SteamOS, and its own range of set-top box Steam Machines.
While the Steam Controller is designed to work with Steam Machines, it will also be compatible with any PC version of Steam.
Valve said it will post additional game demonstrations showing footage of game developers using the controller to play their own games.

"Imagination Technologies has announced the first CPU based on its new version of the MIPS architecture. The new P5600 chip (codenamed Warrior) is a 32-bit CPU based on the MIPS Series 5 architecture and is designed to challenge companies like ARM in the embedded and mobile markets. Major features of the new chip include: support for 40-bit memory extensions, or up to 1TB of RAM, a 128-bit SIMD engine (Single Instruction, Multiple Data), and Hardware virtualization (MIPS R5 can virtualize other machines in hardware). The P5600 core is being touted as supporting up to six cores in a cache-coherent link, most likely similar to ARM's CCI-400. According to IT, the chip is capable of executing 3.5 DMIPs/MHz in CoreMark, which theoretically puts the P5600 on par with the Cortex-A15."
