AMD's range-topping Radeon R9 290X has been (officially) shrouded in mystery since its unveiling last month, but the company is at last revealing full details and releasing the graphics card to stores. As you'd expect given its $549 price, the flagship is a big leap in performance over the $299 R9 280X: it carries 2,816 stream processors, a wider 512-bit memory bus and a larger 4GB of video RAM. The board can muster 5.6TFLOPs of general computing power, AMD says, and is built with 4K graphics in mind. More importantly, it's also delivering a lot of bang for the buck. Early reviews at sites likeAnandTech and Tom's Hardware show the R9 290X outperforming the more expensive GeForce GTX 780; as long as you can tolerate the noisier cooling, it may be a good fit for your gaming PC.

Microsoft has just posted first quarter earnings that suggest it's faring well despite atough PC market. Although the company's revenue was down from the previous quarter to $18.5 billion, its net profit climbed to $5.2 billion; both figures were double-digit improvements over the same quarter a year ago. The Redmond firm chalked up most of the success to growth in its corporate-focused Commercial group. Not that its Devices and Consumer division was in dire straits -- while Windows revenue from PC makers was down 7 percent, search ad revenue was up 47 percent. The Surface tablet line also saw a quarter-to-quarter increase in revenue to $400 million that was likely helped by price cuts to outgoing models.
The company hasn't provided an outlook for its second quarter as of this writing, but it's easy to anticipate strong performance. Microsoft has just launched Windows 8.1, which will net $113 million in pre-order revenue (currently deferred); it could also trigger a surge in PC sales as customers upgrade. The tech giant is also launching a new round of first-party hardware during the period, including the Surface 2, Surface Pro 2 and Xbox One. It may be difficult to repeat this perfect storm of profit in 2014, but we doubt that Ballmer and crew are about to complain in the next few months.

The official minimum PC requirements for Call of Duty: Ghosts have been released.
They’re broadly the same as the Nvidia specs reported earlier in the month, although the GPU requirements have been paired back a bit from a GTX 550Ti to a GTS 450 and HDD space requirements have been reduced 10GB to 40GB.
Neither the Recommended nor Ultra specs have yet been released. Note that these numbers are significantly less demanding than those released for the now delayed Watch Dogs earlier this month.
Here are the COD Ghosts minimum specs:
OS: Windows 7 64-Bit / Windows 8 64-Bit
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 2.66 GHZ / AMD Phenom X3 8750 2.4 GHZ or better
Memory: 6 GB RAM
Hard Disk Space: 40 GB
Video: Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 / ATI Radeon HD 5870 or better
Sound: DirectX compatible sound card
DirectX: DirectX 11

Why are we in the middle of GPU-renaming hell? AMD may be releasing a new 28-nm Hawaii chip in the next few days, but it is still based on the same 28-nm process that the original HD 7970 debuted on nearly two years ago. Quick and easy (relative terms) process node transitions are probably a thing of the past. 20-nm lines applicable to large ASICs are not being opened until mid-2014. 'AMD and NVIDIA will have to do a lot of work to implement next generation features without breaking transistor budgets. They will have to do more with less, essentially. Either that or we will just have to deal with a much slower introduction of next generation parts.' It's amazing how far the graphics industry has come in the past 18 years, but the challenges ahead are greater than ever."

ASUS has presented the "world's first" 3-in-1 laptop, desktop and tablet all-in-one computer at an event in Australia.
The Transformer Book Trio is a laptop, tablet and desktop PC all-in-one. The keyboard base can be connected to the tablet to transform the unit into a laptop, or the tablet can be removed and the keyboard base can connect to an external monitor to turn it into a desktop PC.
The keyboard base has its own Windows OS, Intel CPU and SSD storage, reports ItWire.com, while the tablet is Android-powered. A button can be pressed to switch between Windows and Android.
ASUS will launch the Transformer Book Trio in Australia in November for $1,599AUD.
A 2-in-1 T100 was also presented, boasting an increase in battery life and double the graphics performance from the previous generation, while new ASUS Zen ultrabook products were shown off which can switch on in less than three seconds.
Vivian Hung, the Australian MD of ASUS, said she wants to "transform expectations" with the 3-in-1 and that computers have become much more personal and portable.

Roccat has launched an app, which turns a smartphone into a fully customisable remote control for PCs.
Power-Grid features preset grids and controls that offer functionality ranging from adjusting Windows settings to executing in-game macro sequences in popular games such as StarCraft II and League of Legends.
The app also lets users create their own extensively configurable grids and controls, allowing them to cater to their own specific needs.
Power-Grid uses Wi-Fi to connect the smartphone to the PC. This means that commands from the phone are executed on the PC in real time.
Information from games and software can be displayed on the smartphone too, meaning it can also be used as an effective second screen.
The new Power-Grid website provides a database for those searching for additional grids and controls.
Power-Grid is available from the Apple and Google app stores.

iFixit wasn't a fan of the original Surface Pro's poor serviceability, and its opinion isn't changing much with the Surface Pro 2. The fix-it-yourself shop has rated Microsoft's newest tablet a 1 out of 10 for repairability after finding that many of the previous model's challenges still exist. The slate's display is very difficult to remove, and assemblers have glued numerous key components (including the battery) into place. More than 90 screws fasten down whatever's left. As iFixit notes, the Haswell-based processor is the biggest difference here -- virtually all of the battery life and performance improvements come from the CPU upgrade. If you're curious to see exactly what has changed, or just want to delight in iFixit's suffering, you'll find the full teardown at the source link.

There are already a host of gameplay recording options open to PC owners, but Nvidia is bringing its own offering to the table.
It’s called ShadowPlay and it will be introduced as part of Nvidia’s GeForce Experience software suite on October 28th.
Users can activate it using a keyboard toggle, at which point it will begin recording a player’s last 20 minutes of game time. Alternatively, it can also be started and stopped manually.
It can record video in up to 1080p at 60fps although that will come at a performance hit of between five and ten per cent. Users will also need either a GTX 600 or GTX 700 series card.
Live streaming and Twitch integration are promised in a future update.

EA has said that The Sims 4 will now be released on PC in autumn 2014.
The publisher has already made a point of stressing in no uncertain terms that its single play portions will be playable entirely offline – a decision no doubt resulting from the publisher’s tricky experiences with SimCity earlier this year.
Gamers who pre-order The Sims 4 will receive the Limited Edition which includes The Sims 4 Life of the Party Digital content.
"The Sims franchise has the best fans in the world and their passion and enthusiasm is at an all-time high," The Sims Studio VP and GM Rachel Franklin stated. "Those millions of voices will fuel our development process, helping The Sims 4 to be the most ambitious and the best game our studio has ever made."

"Linus Torvalds has welcomed the arrival of Valve's Linux-based platform, SteamOS, and said it could boost Linux on desktops. The Linux creator praised Valve's 'vision' and suggested its momentum would force other manufacturers to take Linux seriously — especially if game developers start to ditch Windows. Should SteamOS gain traction among gamers and developers, that could force more hardware manufacturers to extend driver support beyond Windows. That's a sore point for Torvalds, who slammed Nvidia last year for failing to support open-source driver development for its graphics chips. Now thatSteamOS is on the way, Nvidia has opened up to the Linux community, something Torvalds predicts is a sign of things to come. 'I'm not just saying it'll help us get traction with the graphics guys,' he said. 'It'll also force different distributors to realize if this is how Steam is going, they need to do the same thing because they can't afford to be different in this respect. They want people to play games on their platform too.'"

A PC version of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5 does not currently exist, nor has it been announced. Keep this in mind if you happen to stumble across a supposed "leaked" copy of the game for Windows, as one such torrent has infected thousands of PCs with malware.
The alleged PC version of Grand Theft Auto 5 offered up in a public torrent is around 18 GB in size and has been falsely verified as legitimate, making it seem like the real deal. Once the download completes and the installer is launched, however, malicious software is deployed without the user's knowledge. Torrenters are then instructed to fill out a series of online surveys in order to claim a nonexistent registration key, lining the pockets of scammers in the process.
WCCFTech notes that the torrent in question has been downloaded thousands of times, likely compromising thousands of unsuspecting victims. Don't let your hype for a PC release for Grand Theft Auto 5 override your common sense, as the consequences could be dire.

The Nokia Lumia 2520 isn't the only high-profile Windows tablet launching today. As promised, Microsoft has released the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 in the US and 20 other countries at respective starting prices of $449 and $899. A handful of accessories are also available alongside the slates, including the backlit Touch Cover 2 and Type Cover 2 keyboards ($120 and $130), a Wireless Adapter for Typing Covers ($60) and the Arc Touch Mouse Surface Edition ($70). The Docking Station and Power Cover aren't expected to ship until early 2014, when they'll cost $200 each; the USB car charger arrives at the same time for $50. Most other countries will have to go Surface-free for the time being, although Microsoft will ship its new Surface models to mainland China in early November.

Digital retailers Steam and GOG have pulled recent release Dark Matter from sale.
Enraged buyers took to the internet shortly after the game’s release, disgruntled that it ends with a rather abrupt ‘to be continued’ message.
“The full story is indeed not complete yet because originally we wanted a longer game (12-16 hours) but couldn’t finish it completely due to time and money (and Kickstarter failing),” one of the game’s developers explained on the Steam forums.
“So, we choose to go with a 6-8 hour game instead to bring something out to the world and show everyone the world of Dark Matter. We are going to change the ‘to be continued’ text to something else, to make sure this will be the end of the game as is in a clear message to everyone.
“The current Dark Matter on Steam is a complete game in itself though. There are many things to explore and many ways to go through and many things to discover. If people just run through it then yes it will be less then those 6 hours.”
A message on the game’s Steam Store Page now reads: “Currently there is a known issue at the end of the game. The developer is aware of the issue and they are working on a patch as a solution.”
Although we’re not sure that changing ‘to be continued’ to ‘the end’ constitutes much of a solution.
GOG, meanwhile, is offering refunds to anyone who bought the game before October 21st: “It's come to our attention that the gamecard for Dark Matter was not quite specific enough about the nature of the game and, as a result, it may be that some people bought the title with some misapprehensions as to how the game's story would end.
“Since we don't ever want to sell a game to someone because they believe it is something that it is not, we wanted to let you know about this and let you know what we're doing to make it right.”

EA’s Sims 3: Into the Future Expansion Pack has been released on Mac and PC.
The Sims 3: Into the Future is the first time in the history of the franchise that Sims have broken through the space and time continuum.
Players can let their Sims enter new lands to meet their descendants, play with technologies of tomorrow, and change the destiny of their entire world.
“Our fans have been asking to take their Sims to the future for quite some time,” said Kari St. John, Senior Producer for The Sims 3: Into the Future.
The expansion pack is available now at retailers in North America and on Origin.com. It will be available internationally on the 24th and 25th of October.
In September EA released The Sims 3: Movie Stuff Pack, which shot straight to the top of the budget PC games chart, knocking World of Warcraft: Battle chest off the no.1 spot.

Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to fail. Going by that metric, [Stian]‘s three-chip 6502 homebrew computer is the epitome of perfection. It’s a real, working, homebrew retrocomputer using only three chips: a CPU, some RAM, and a microcontroller to bootstrap the computer and provide a video output,
The key to this minimalist build is having the entire boot process controlled by an ATMega16 microcontroller, This interfaces to the 6502 through a dual-port SRAM, a 1 kilobyte Cypress CY7C130. This dual-port RAM allows the CPU and microcontroller to access the same bit of memory, making it easy to bootstrap a computer from a bit of AVR code.
Output is provided with [Stian]‘s ATMega video text generator putting a 37×17 characters on any television with an RCA jack. While input isn’t handled yet, [Stian] says it should be possible with his AVR PS/2 keyboard library.
While other 6502 homebrew computers such as [Quinn Dunki] Veronica can reach unparalleled heights of complexity, there is a lot to be said about the minimalism of [Stian]‘s three-chip computer. With some clever coding and a modified parts list, it may well be possible to put a retrocomputer in the hands of everyone with a bare minimum of cost and parts.

The Windows 8.1 update designed for Microsoft’s RT tablet PCs has been pulled from the Windows Store.
TechSpot reports that Microsoft has confirmed an issue that affects roughly one in every thousand users that results in Windows tablets displaying the infamous ‘blue screen of death’ (BSOD) after updating.
A workaround is available for those who have been affected that involves downloading a 3.7GB patch onto a USB drive.
For everyone else, the update has been pulled until Microsoft can implement a fix.
Microsoft is currently the only supplier of Windows RT devices after manufactures including Asus, Lenovo and Samsung dropped the machines from their tablet ranges.
