Microsoft has sent out invites for a Surface event next Monday (September 23rd), at which the launch of the Surface 2 is expected.
The press invites received from Microsoft show a Surface and its keyboard cover with “You’re invited/Monday, September 23, 2013” on the screen.
The Verge is reporting that the Surface 2 and Surface 2 Pro will be unveiled at the event, with sources saying a rumoured ‘Surface Mini’ will not appear. The Surface 2 is said to be dropping the “RT” prefix of the original Surface, but will still run Windows 8.1 RT.
The design of the new tablets is claimed to be similar to the last generation of the Surface, but will include a two-stage kickstand. Inside, Intel’s new Haswell processor and 8GB of RAM will power the device, with the new processor predicted to add around two hours of battery life.
The screen for the Surface 2 is also rumoured to get an upgrade, increasing to a 1080p display, running on Nvidia’s Tegra 4 graphics.
For extra battery life, an improved keyboard cover is said to be planned, which will feature an in-built battery to boost the Surface 2’s estimated eight hours of battery life. A new docking station and power cover are also expected.
The event announcement follows Microsoft’s $40 billion buyback plan and its increase of its dividend by 22 per cent, bringing its quarterly dividend to 28 cents a share. Microsoft’s stock has risen 23 per cent in 2013, closing at $32.93 in New York this week.
