Screenshots are so 2009, so instead developer The Astronauts has opted to issue three new glimpses at The Vanishing of Ethan Carter in the Internet's favorite movie format, the gif. Problematically, The Astronauts are duly proud of their work and wanted to make these gifs as grand as possible, resulting in moving images that were approaching 20MB in size. The above gif, and the two below the break, have been reduced in size and quality to prevent our readers' computers from bursting into flames, but if you'd like to see the original versions visit The Astronauts website.
That gif above is a demonstration of what The Astronauts call "photogrammetric technology," a process that makes rendering highly detailed scenes both quicker and more efficient. It won't replace artists per se, but will instead augment their work.

Just finding other human players in DayZ can be a struggle. And when you do, they’re more likely to rob and murder you than help you stay alive.
Just seconds into the current build of DayZ it’s clear we’re playing an alpha. When you launch the game a message flashes up warning you of its incomplete state and the ‘I understand’ button is buggy, obscuring the line explaining that the game is unfinished. But comical corruptions aside – and there are a lot of them – the brutal essence of the DayZ experience is untouched, and in many ways this is already better than the popular Arma mod. When you start a new game you’re dumped randomly on the coast of Chernarus, a colossal 230 square kilometre expanse of bleak Eastern European countryside that’s filled with zombies and up to 39 other players. What you do next is up to you. There are no objectives or goals other than those you make yourself. Staying alive is a priority, and scavenging for food, water, weapons, ammo, and other supplies is key to surviving those first few grueling hours. In the mod very few buildings were accessible, but in this new version of Chernarus almost every structure has an interior. This makes the environment feel much richer, and loot is no longer just lying conspicuously on the floor – you have to look under beds and on top of dressers. It makes the pace notably slower, especially since the loot tables are so sparse. You’ll search every house in one of the many towns dotted around the countryside, with only a can of beans and a pair of sunglasses to show for it.The shadow of permadeath hangs over everything you do. You might get lucky and stumble on a cache of weapons and food, or a fallen player’s backpack, but that sniper on the hillside doesn’t care. They’ll kill you without thinking, and you’ll be back to square one: on the beach in a t-shirt with a flashlight and a single battery. The HUD has been minimised dramatically, replacing the Sims-style meters of the mod (hunger, thirst, bleeding, etc.) with text-based messages that express your character’s needs: “I’m hungry”, “I need something to drink”, “I can feel blood seeping through my clothes”, and so on.

Blizzard has delayed the launch of the Hearthstone open beta. The collectible card game had been due to open its doors to all this month, but it looks like it will now do so at some point in January 2014."We believe the right thing to do for the game is to not rush it out into open beta, but to instead hold onto it a little longer to make sure it's ready for wider testing," production director Jason Chayes wrote in a blog post on Battle.net."At BlizzCon, we mentioned that we hoped to get the game into a state where it's ready for open beta this month, but we're just not quite there yet. The development team has been working hard to get this out before the end of the year, but our highest priority is that Hearthstone has an awesome launch when all gates are lifted and everyone can download it and play at the same time."Chayes said Blizzard was very close to launching the open beta, but called on closed beta players to continue to report bugs even at this late stage. "That's the best way you can help the team get Hearthstone into everyone's hands as soon as possible," he said.Meanwhile, Chayes confirmed that as of 19th December, Blizzard had sent beta invites to everyone who opted into the Hearthstone closed beta test before Monday, 16th December. So, if you opted in before that date and are yet to receive a key, check your spam folder. If all else fails, Blizzard will flag Battle.net accounts that opted in to the Hearthstone beta test and did not claim their beta key for beta access within the first few weeks of January.Opt-ins for the closed beta end 7th January (you can opt in on Battle.net). Blizzard plans to invite all who opt in by that date to the closed beta at some point before the open beta begins. Chayes stressed Blizzard does not intend to perform another card data wipe.

Steam has launched its winter sale - and there are some eye-catching bargains to be had.The 2013 Steam Holiday Sale launched last night and includes discounts on thousands of games. As usual, there are different promotions all day and every day, including eight-hour flash sales and community's choice sales. Then there are daily deals. The sale ends 3rd January 2014.At the time of publication, I like the look of Irrational's BioShock Infinite with 75 per cent off - £24.99 down to £6.24. I also like the look of Batman: Arkham Oranges with 50 per cent off - reduced from £40 to £20. Superb heist game Monaco is irresistible at just £2.39.Let's not forget GOG.com, which is on day eight of its 2013 Winter Sale. There are over 600 games there discounted by at least 50 per cent. Like Steam, GOG.com has daily deals and thematic bundles. At the time of publication, the wonderful border control adventure Papers, Please is a paltry $6.66, and fantasy role-playing game The Witcher 2 is half off at $9.99.And there's more. Green Man Gaming also started its winter 2013 sale yesterday. Like on Steam, Batman: Arkham Oranges is half off on GMG at £20. The excellent Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a fiver. I also like the look of Sumo Digital's Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed for £3.74. That's cheaper than a pint in a Brighton pub.

December 20th, 2013, 21:13 Posted By: wraggster
Massively multiplayer online role-playing game Warhammer Online is no more. This week EA shut down its servers and in the blink of an eye the five-year-old once would-be World of Warcraft killer was snuffed out of existence. As an online-only game, that was that. Charge your glasses. There is now no way to play the game. Or is there?Ex-Warhammer Online developer Andrew Meggs suggests there may be a way to keep Warhammer Online, albeit in single-player form only, alive. In a blog post, the co-founder of Camelot Unchained developer City State Entertainment revealed the existence of an internal-only developer build of the Warhammer client that could run without a server. And he'd know, because he worked on it."There were no login or character selection screens," he explained on his blog Shiny Toys."There were no NPCs or other players. There was no gameplay of any kind. It was just you and the entire world spread out before you. You could fly around like Superman, or teleport anywhere at will. You could watch the sun rise and set over Altdorf, and see the smoke rise from fires forever burning. And you could see the thousands upon thousands of hours of work and craftsmanship that went into creating a world that has now been unplugged."Meggs called on EA to release one last build of the game client, but flip the switch that said "if this is a public build, force single-player mode OFF" to "ON"."It won't have to be released with any art files or a massive download," he said."It can run standalone, pulling assets out of the patch files that the last players will still have sitting on their drives. This won't compete with any current or future game, because it's not a game any more. But it's a place for the die-hard fans to visit by themselves, to reminisce and remember the times they had there with others."It's something the hundreds of developers who worked on it will still be able to run for their kids someday. It's a piece of history for Professors of Game Studies in 2113 to better understand what MMORPGs looked like before the neural implants."It won't be WAR; that only exists with other players. But it's a double-clickable museum exhibiting much of what WAR was, so it won't be forgotten completely. It's an effort by all of us, as developers, to preserve a living record as our transient medium is created and destroyed. I can't do this; I left behind the code when I left EA. But there are people inside EA who can easily make this happen."Please do."

Konami has announced the PC release of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is set to arrive next month.
The publisher confirms the title will see its PC launch on January 9th. The PC version will be sold exclusively on Steam, with the distributor already offering a pre-order option – as well as a pre-load option starting January 3rd.
The game runs $19.99 up until release, a 33 per cent discount off the standard $29.99 tag. For those who end up missing the pre-order period, it'll still be 20 per cent off during launch week.
The PC format release will launch just under a year from the game's initial PS3 and Xbox 360 releases in North America, Europe, Japan, and Australia.

Microsoft’s rumoured Surface Mini may come with motion technology.
Chinese site WPDang reports that Microsoft will release an 8-inch version of the Surface, which will come with hand and face-tracking technology similar to Kinect.
Many believe the firm will unveil the Surface Mini at its Build Conference, which takes place in San Francisco from April 2nd to 4th, 2014.
WPDang claims the Mini will also come with the same Full HD resolution as the Surface Pro 2 and run off an Intel Bay Trail processor.

Though the newly-titled Pillars of Eternity has yet to debut, Obsidian Entertainment is already working on ideas for its next crowdfunded roleplaying epic.
"What I'm trying to figure out is, how could we make something that is more like a Skyrim for PC – forget console for now – with the engine we made in Unity for Eternity?" pondered Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart. "Where we are with our conversation, quest, data editors, and all of that. If we were careful about scope and let Chris Avellone go wild with creating a new world, more of an open world, what could we do?"
Good question, but given Avellone's earlier epic roleplaying games, giving him free rein could very easily result in George R.R. Martin-style roleplaying game that's 500 hours long and involves 200 different characters. Even with modern technology that's not feasible. Solution? Episodic games.
"Would it make sense for it to be episodic? Because going out there and saying, 'We're gonna make 100 hours of gameplay,' everyone goes, 'Oh my god, how could it not cost millions?" states Urquhart. "But could we create ten hours and have people pay ten bucks? And generally when we say ten hours, it's usually 15. But if we go with five episodes, then people get between 50 and 75 hours."
Obsidian's plans are actually further along than anyone suspected, and as Rock Paper Shotgun grilled Urquhart, he let slip that the company is working toward creating a game based on a licensed property. "There's something we're talking about that I think would be really cool, but it's not an original property," said Urquhart. "It's a licensed property ... It's something we can still do a ton of creative stuff with, though. And then the other thing is an original property. Also, there's a third thing that somebody approached us with, but I really don't think that's going to work out."
It appears that the massive outpouring of crowdsourced cash and support has emboldened Urquhart and his colleagues at Obsidian. There's no telling which of these project they'll aim for once Pillars of Eternity is complete, but we can always cross our fingers for a new Planescape: Torment, huh?

A free update for Monaco: What's Yours is Mine, which has sold over 275,000 copies since its debut in April, adds an "Enhanced" play mode full of shorter, more streamlined maps that developer Pocketwatch Games hopes will make for an overall better experience. And if you're a purist, relax: You can still play the old-style maps in "Classic" mode.
This update eliminates 'huge parts of our least favorite levels," Pocketwatch Games says in its announcement post. On top of tweaking the campaign, The Architect's Patch also adds a new campaign section, automatically unlocked for all players, full of three PVP missions and some new mechanics for the base campaigns – like doors that require certain keys to proceed and roaming NPCs who carry cash and items.
A lot of the cuts come from Andy Nguyen, the level designer on Monaco. After the game shipped, he had a long list of gripes with each level – as did players – and so this update was borne. It's an update fueled by stats: Pocketwatch noticed less than ten percent of players who finished the first level actually made it through and completed the last level of the first campaign. The developer is hoping that'll change with The Architect's Patch, which is available now on Steam.

It's that time of year again, boys and girls. No, not time to express your love for the people who raised you, but instead, it's time for Steam's holiday sale.
This year's sale runs from December 19 to January 3 and as in previous iterations, it offers a wide swath of discounts. First, there are the daily discounts, which collect a handful of games and slash their prices. At the moment, you could pick up BioShock Infinite for $10 or Batman: Arkham Originsfor $25.
Then there are the Flash sales, which usually offer larger discounts than the daily discounts, though they only appear for eight hours. Right now you could pick up Counter-Strike: Global Offensive for $3.74, but eight hours from now you'll be out of luck.
Not just a sale, Steam's holiday celebration is also a community event. Every eight hours three games will be offered up for the community to vote on. Whichever receives the most votes gets a deep, public discount. Voting also entitles you to one free Snow Globe card with which can unlock rare items in Steam games such as Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2. Or you could simply horde your cards until you have enough to craft the Snow Globe 2013 badge. This won't help you in-game, but it's a nice reminder of how you spent this year's holiday season.

The Steam Machine is just a tiny PC designed to attach to your television, so when the gadget surgeons at iFixit pulled a beta Machine apart, they were unsurprised to find common components.
Inside the Steam Machine - we stress that this is a beta version of the device; things may change before it hits retail - iFixit discovered an NVIDIA GTX 780 with 3GB of on-board RAM, 16GB of DDR3 RAM, a 1TB Seagate solid state hybrid hard drive, a 450W power supply and an Intel Core i5-4570 CPU running at 3.6GHz. These are all items you could find at your local computer retailer, though according to iFixit's math, purchasing these items piecemeal would set you back about $1,300.
Overall, iFixit gave the Steam Machine high praise, citing the ample buttons and comfortable nature of its controller, alongside the ease with which users should be able to upgrade their Machine. The only real issue the site found was that the Machine's RAM can occasionally be difficult to replace, but if you've ever put a PC together, you're more than familiar with the finger-slicing difficulties of switching out RAM sticks.

We hope you weren't quick to leap on the Surface Pro 2 update that popped up last week; if you were, you may be regretting it for a while. The company haspulled the upgrade following reports of both failed installations and battery problems, including a reduced capacity and incomplete charges. A fixed release is coming "after the holidays," but there's no word of an easy way to roll back. Short of resetting the system or a convenient restore point, you may have to live with a buggy tablet for the next few weeks.

Disney is now accepting player applications for a closed beta version of Star Wars: Attack Squadrons, a free-to-play online game that recreates iconic space combat scenes from the original Star Wars film trilogy.
Attack Squadrons features a variety of PVP modes in which players battle factions of customizable X-wings, TIE fighters, and other familiar spacecraft in browser-based skirmishes. The game allows up to 16 players to fight it out in a free-for-all Deathmatch mode, while Team Dogfight and Base Defense modes encourage cooperation among your fellow pilots.
If you experience issues signing up for the beta, Disney is working on a fix, and signups should be available again shortly. A release date for Star Wars: Attack Squadrons has not been announced.

We're inching slowly toward the virtual reality future the 1980s promised us with the addition of a "VR support" category on Valve's digital distribution service Steam.
Currently, nine games can be found by searching for VR support in Steam. Highlights include the Valve Complete Pack, Surgeon Simulator 2013 and Strike Suit Zero. Notably absent from the list is Euro Truck Simulator, though its omission could either be the result of the search query still being fleshed out, or because the game's Oculus Rift support is still in the testing phases.
It should go without saying, but if you want to experience these games in their fully immersive glory, you're going to also need to own an Oculus Rift headset. Unfortunately we still have no pricing or release date information for the gadget.

Disney has announced its latest Star Wars game – a free-to-play space combat title by the name of Attack Squadrons.
The title sees players duking it out in battles with up to 16 players. There are three modes of play: Free For All, Team Dogfight and Base Defense. Gamers can also team up in communities.
Fans have a number of spaceships from the series to play with. These are all customisable, which probably explains the strangely coloured X-Wings and TIE fighters in the trailer. The official website also promises new ships, items and upgrades each month.
The game is being developed by new Seattle-based studio Area 52 Games. Players can sign up for the beta, which launches in the New Year, on the official website.

The Humble Store has kicked off its Winter Sale with a number of big discounts, most notably indie hit Gone Home, which will be reduced to a mere $5.
Other notable sales include Europa Universalis 4 for $20, Shadow Warrior for $10 and Legend of Grimrock for $3.75. A full list of the current deals can be found on the Winter Sale website. So what's the catch? These deals are only available for a limited time. These discounts in particular are only valid for the next eight hours, after which time they'll be replaced by new, different discounts. There's no telling what might pop up next - an earlier version of the sale only reduced Gone Home's price to $10, instead of its current $5.
As with all Humble Store sales, 10 percent of all proceeds go toward charity. It's up to you which charity you'd like your money to benefit, though between the American Red Cross, Child's Play, the Electronic Freedom Frontier, the World Land Trust and Charity: Water, wherever your cash goes it will be put to good use helping the less fortunate.

Besides Samsung's Chromebox series ChromeOS has appeared mostly on laptops, but now LG is ready to put its new Chromebase up against Apple's iMac and Windows-based all-in-one desktop PCs. According to the spec sheet, that 21.5-inch 1080p LCD hides an Intel Celeron CPU, 2GB of RAM and a 16GB SSD inside, along with an assortment of ports in the back and on the sides. It won't compete with high-end PCs on horsepower or internal storage, but it's ready to play a part in Google's vision of network computers that run mostly web-based apps, are hassle free and require no real maintenance. We're not expecting to get Steam loaded on here, but when we're playing IT for relatives over the holiday something like this may seem like a better option. Without a pricetag however, it's hard to judge properly so we'll look for that and more information next month at CES.

Valve’s popular free-to-play MOBA title Dota 2 is now freely accessible to everybody.
The developer has also revealed that the hugely successful eSports title is currently attracting some 6.5m monthly active users.
“For the past several months, access to Dota 2 has been granted through a queue system that gated entry into the community,” a blog post explained.
“We’ve used this system to gradually increase the size of our playerbase, as we ramped up our infrastructure and improved the experience for new players.
“As we have recently completed a set of server management upgrades as well as released a huge number of enhancements to the new user experience, we’re going to remove all restrictions to playing Dota 2.”

December 18th, 2013, 00:54 Posted By: wraggster
An interesting bug regarding update dependency calculation has been found in Windows XP. By design, machines using Windows Update retrieve patch information from Microsoft's update servers (or possibly WSUS in a company setting). That patch information contains information about each patch: what software it applies to and, critically, what historic patch or patches the current patch supersedes. Unfortunately, the Windows Update client components used an algorithm with exponential scaling when processing these lists. Each additional superseded patch would double the time taken to process the list. With the operating system now very old, those lists have grown long, sometimes to 40 or more items. On a new machine, that processing appeared to be almost instantaneous. It is now very slow. After starting the system, svchost.exe is chewing up the entire processor, sometimes for an hour or more at a time. Wait long enough after booting and the machine will eventually return to normalcy. Microsoft thought that it had this problem fixed in November's Patch Tuesday update after it culled the supersedence lists. That update didn't appear to fix the problem. The company thought that its December update would also provide a solution, with even more aggressive culling. That didn't seem to help either. For one reason or another, Microsoft's test scenarios for the patches didn't reflect the experience of real Windows XP machines."
