A new technology created by Mozilla will allow developers to make their games playable directly on the web, with no need for extra plug-ins.
Monster Madness Online, from Dungeon Defenders developer Trendy Entertainment and its subsidiary Nom Nom Games, is the first game to use 'asm.js' to run straight from any modern browser. The game is available for testing until December 19 on its website, after which it will release in May 2014.
Though engines like Unity already allow for complex games to be played in-browser, Trendy Chief Technology Officer Jeremy Stieglitz told CVG that, in his team's experience, as much as three-quarters of a game's potential audience loses interest if they must install a plug-in before playing.
"It appears most casual web players are not thrilled at the prospect of installing a third party plug-in that they may know nothing about," Stieglitz said. "[Asm.js] also supports more operating system platforms than the Unity web plug-in, such as Linux."
Since asm.js converts C++ into browser-friendly JavaScript, it opens up a world of tools for creators beyond HTML5 engines and Unity/proprietary plug-ins.
"This provides options for proprietary game engines to easily run on the web, and given that a lot of indie games do use in-house tech, I think that this really provides every indie with the viable option of making their game - whether high-end or low-end - into a web game if they want to reach more players that way. Especially with the gradual decline of Flash as a viable browser game platform, this will be really important to the future of web games," said Stieglitz.
Users will even be able to save game assets permanently using IndexedDB, another new piece of browser technology. This can cut down on the long load times endemic to web games.
That said, it will still be a while before games like Skyrim or Crysis 3 will be viable on browsers. Stieglitz said games using asm.js run at about 40 to 50 percent of native performance, whereas hardware-intensive games need closer to 100 percent. Until then, less-intense games like Batman: Arkham Asylum or Gone Home could be good candidates to run in-browser on an average gaming computer, suggested Stieglitz.
Mozilla also collaborated with Epic to bring its Epic Citadel tech demo to browsers in May.

December 18th, 2013, 00:29 Posted By: wraggster
Developer Obsidian is not only keen on using Kickstarter to fund another game, it has an idea it hopes to talk about as soon as March or April next year. That's what studio boss Feargus Urquhart told Rock, Paper, Shotgun in one of a few pieces published on the site around the Pillars of Eternity name-and-video reveal (one was a preview of Eternity based on a studio visit). The idea is not Eternity 2 - a game Urquhart would "be really surprised if we didn't make" - but something that uses the same technology to different effect, much in the same way Black Isle made Baldur's Gate then Icewind Dale then Planescape: Torment."Those games used the exact same engine, but they all felt very distinct," Urquhart said. "That's what we want to do now too, and that's just gonna help us make each of those games better and better."Unnnnnnnnnnnnnnlikely.
One idea he's particularly fond of is an open-world experience like Skyrim, which sounds ambitious and expensive. But what if it was realised in more digestible chunks?"Could we create 10 hours and have people pay 10 bucks?" he mused. "And generally, when we say 10 hours, it's usually 15. But if we go with five episodes, then people get between 50 and 75 hours."Another idea is a game like Eternity but with a smaller party size - the emphasis being less on big-group tactics and more on character development.Whatever the game is, it sounds like some ideas are already solid."There's something we're talking about that would be really cool, but it's not an original property," he revealed. "It's a licensed property. But it's not Alpha Protocol!"It's something we can still do a ton of creative stuff with, though. And then the other thing is an original property. Also, there's a third thing that somebody approached us with, but I really don't think that's going to work out."This is forward-thinking and a necessity for a 100-plus-sized studio such as Obsidian. Only 15 people are making Eternity, more or less, while the rest are finishing South Park: The Stick of Truth, now a Ubisoft game. That's a lot of people to keep busy.Obsidian's developer buddy inXile kept designers busy by funding - and getting to work on - Torment: Numenera before Wasteland 2 had hit beta. One thing Urquhart is plain about Obsidian not doing, however, is asking for more money before proving itself with Pillars of Eternity. "I don't want to go back to the well before we've proven anything. That would be really lame of us."
Feargus Urquhart
"We're very grateful for what people have given us," he said, "and I don't want to go back to the well before we've proven anything. That would be really lame of us."But we have a good idea and we've kind of proven things with Eternity to a point. Obviously we have a larger studio, so we actually have people to work on stuff [beforehand], but I don't want people to feel like we're taking advantage of them."I spoke to Obsidian's chirpy creative director Chris Avellone earlier this year. We talked about the future of Eternity, a future he hopes will be funded by sales of the first game. He also showed enthusiasm for returning to Kickstarter and making more games of a budget and size with Eternity."If we had multiple isometric hardcore role-playing games going on at the same time, with the scale of Eternity, that is something I think we'd be very very happy about as a studio," he said, "because that was Black Isle."Pillars of Eternity has no release date beyond 2014, although spring was once the target. It's in development for PC and Mac, with tablets possibly to follow.

It's a big day for Renegade Kid with both its first-person horror/action game Dementium 2 and its retro platformer Mutant Mudds receiving enhanced ports to new platforms. The more exciting release for many will be Dementium 2 HD, the spruced up PC release of its 2010 DS spook-fest. Available on Steam for 25 per cent off until 2nd January (£8.99 / $11.25 rather than £11.99 / $14.99), this HD release features drastically improved lighting, character models, audio, and revamped controls that wouldn't have been possible with the DS's single D-pad.EG-contributor Matt Edwards once wrote "Dementium 2 represents one of the better survival horror experiences on a system not known for its support of the genre," in his mildly favourable Dementium 2 review. Though he also noted that "it doesn't do enough to feel particularly inspired or original."

UPDATE: DayZ standalone has gone on to sell an insane 172,500 copies in its first 24 hours. Wowzers! The new stats were announced by developer Bohemia's CEO Marek Spanel on his blog. He listed the number of currently online players as 142,403 with "many" bugs discovered and "hard" work ahead.ORIGINAL STORY: It may have arrived a year later than Dean Hall first envisaged but DayZ's pulling power hasn't suffered, with 88,000 players stampeding the £19.99 Steam Early Access release in only 12 hours."88,000 survivors have joined DayZ alpha in the first 12 hours," announced Maruk from developer Bohemia on Twitter. "Thank you."DayZ creator Dean Hall revealed that 19,000 unique players had shown in the game's database one hour after launch - a number increasing by 200 a second. "What the hell..." he wrote on Twitter. One of those new players was Cliff Bleszinski, the former Gears of War frontman, who shared a picture of a DayZ bug he found. Dean Hall's father Graeme Hall even popped up on Twitter to congratulate his son. This is all fascinating stuff.Far more fascinating than watching Ian Higton's DayZ Let's Play from this afternoon, clearly.

SteamOS has been further inspected to see what kind of technical solutions it uses. The Debian-based OS uses Linux 3.10, shipping with a heap of patches applied, with the most focus being on real-time-like features. The kernel is also using aufs and they seem to be sitting on some bug fixes for upstream on top of that. The kernel is not using the new Intel P-State driver, with the reported reason being, 'it causes issues with sound being choppy during BigPicture trailer video playback.' SteamOS is using SysVinit as its init system. The desktop is backed by X.Org server 1.12.4 and a custom desktop compositor which seems to be a 4,200-line patch on xcompmgr. Catalyst and Mesa components can be found on the system, but so far only NVIDIA is officially supported. The system boots into Big Picture Mode, but the user can drop into a GNOME desktop. Responsible for a great deal of the kernel changes, SteamOS compositor work, and other SteamOS code is Pierre-Loup A. Griffais, a.k.a. 'Plagman'. He was a NVIDIA employee dealing with their Linux support. Another Valve employee doing lots of the SteamOS system-level work is John Vert, who up until last year was a Microsoft employee since 1991. There's also other former Microsoft employees on Valve's Linux team, like Mike Sartain

Free-to-play MMO peaks at over one million concurrent players during 2013
Wargaming's World of Tanks has surpassed 75 million registered players.
The news comes after the developer claimed in June that its free-to-play MMO had 60 million registered users. This means that since then, the game has attracted 2.5 million players on average every month.
During 2013, the popular MMO at one point peaked at 1,152,261 concurrent users.
So far this year, more than 201 billion shells have been fired by players, with 17 billion vehicles wrecked.
The firm is hoping to further increase its userbase when it rolls out new entries into the series on Xbox 360, tablets and smartphones.
Thanks to the success of its flagship franchise, Wargaming now employs 2,200 staff around the world.

EA and PC maker Origin have turned a military Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) into a mobile LAN party.
As part of the marketing campaign for Battlefield 4, EA’s Australia arm and the PC manufacturer Origin – which happens to share its name with EA’s online distribution service – have equipped the APC with six gaming computers.
Dubbed the ‘Battlefield 4 and Origin PC Armoured Division Tank’, the tightly-packed machine will roll around Australia in 2014, in order to offer the chance to play Battlefield 4 to those concerned about rocket attacks should they play at home.

20-year-old Jay Machalani has put together a concept idea to ‘fix’ Windows 8.
The self-taught user-experience designer has mocked up a number of concepts as a part-time hobby after being frustrated by the operating system.
The basic concept focuses on bringing back the traditional Start menu – something many Windows users have asked for and Microsoft is rumoured to be introducing in its next major version of the OS.
Machalani has demonstrated how Windows Phone’s Live Tiles can work on the OS and has turned his attention to stylising icons, typography, and matching folder colours as well as the accent colour of the Start screen.
He has also mocked up ideas for Windows 8-style apps that break away from the "Metro" world and float on the desktop.

The PC version of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance has been said to in the final stages of development by staff working on the game.
Speaking in the Kojima Productions Alert podcast in response to a question sent in by a fan, host Sean Eyestone said that the slicing, dicing robo-ninja action spin-off of the Metal Gear Solid series would arrive “sooner than you might imagine”.
“It’s in the final stages right now,” he explained.
“You’ll be seeing it pop up on Steam any day now.”
Revengeance, which was originally released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in February to largely positive reviews, follows the previous playable protagonist of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Raiden, as he engages in sword-to-sword combat with a variety of cyborgs and enemies.
Unlike the Metal Gear Solid series, Revengeance is heavily focused on action, rather than stealth, and allows players to freely slice environments, enemies and objects using ‘Blade Mode’.
While the game has been confirmed for a digital release via Steam, it is yet unknown whether it will also see a physical release as it did on PS3 and Xbox 360.

When new hardware arrives, gamers the world over become bitten by a precocious little parasite called "the unboxing bug." So it is with Valve'shardware prototypes, the Steam Box / Steam Machines. Reddit user colbehr received his hardware from Valve yesterday, and has posted an exhaustive photo-inspection of the unit for all to enjoy. So, let's dig in:
Big? Seems fairly substantial. Black? Like midnight at the bottom of the ocean. Box? Boy, you better believe it. And there you go! Valve has given hardware beta testers a big, black box to toy around with. It also came shipped in a wooden crate, like something hauled out of that place in the Indiana Jones movies where they keep The Ark of the Covenant and James Woods. Mind you, this is a hardware beta, and we don't know if this is what the units will look like when they're available for purchase.

Due to “regulatory hurdles”, the Steam Machine beta testing is limited to US residents only.
Valve has announced that 300 selected Steam Machine beta testers will be notified today. The original plan was for all customers worldwide to be in with a chance of getting one, saying that to include anyone from outside the US would delay the whole project.
The decision only affects the 300 prototypes Steam Machines and not the commercial versions which are due to go on sale in 2014.
Those lucky enough to be selected will also receive the Steam haptic feedback controller.
Valve has also revealed that SteamOS will be available from tomorrow (Friday 13th), although the firm warns that “unless you’re an intrepid Linux hacker already, we’re going to recommend that you wait until later in 2014 to try it out.”

Cue mass Zestiria: Namco's countdown ended today with the announcement ofTales of Zestiria, a new PS3 entry in the RPG series. The reveal trailer was shown during a Namco Bandai livestream (captured by Kagayaki Channel), then smiley series creator Hideo Baba divulged a little of what to expect from the newest Tales game.
As both Siliconera and Gematsu report, dragons will play a big part in the story, hence the logo and the fiery end to the trailer. According to Gematsu, the game is set in Glynnwood, a continent being fought over by the Highland Kingdom and Laurence Empire. Both factions, however, live in fear and worship of the mysterious Family of Heaven, whose supernatural power shapes the world.
As for the characters, so far it's a case of brains and brawn. The brown-haired fellow in the cape is Slay, a moral, intelligent type, while the blonde knight is Alicia.
"Over the past few years the 'Tales of' team has taken great strides to strengthen our relationship with players across North America and Europe. To respond to their love and support I am honored to open a new chapter of the 'Tales of' series together with Japanese and overseas fans," said Baba in a Namco Europe press release, confirming the game will head west as well to Japan.
Details are a bit on the sparse side for now, but more are set to surface in the next issue of Famitsu. We may also learn more from next weekend's Jump Festa 2014 expo in Tokyo.
