Worldwide tablet shipment growth is forecast to slow to 22.2 per cent year-on-year in 2014 to 270.5 million units, says analyst firm IDC.
This year tablets are expected to reach 221.3 million units, down slightly from a previous forecast of 227.4 million. However, this is still 53.5 per cent above 2012 levels.
By 2017, IDC reckons annual market growth will slow to single-digit percentages and shipments will peak at 386.3 million units, down from the previous forecast of 407 million units.
The rise of large phones could push consumers back from small tablets to larger tablets, the firm anticipates.
"Apple's launch of the iPad Air, a much thinner and lighter version of its 9.7-inch product, could herald another market transition back toward larger screens, presuming consumers are willing to pay the higher costs associated with bigger screens," said IDC in a statement.
"In some markets consumers are already making the choice to buy a large smartphone rather than buying a small tablet, and as a result we've lowered our long-term forecast," said Tom Mainelli, Research Director, Tablets.
"Meanwhile, in mature markets like the US where tablets have been shipping in large volumes since 2010 and are already well established, we're less concerned about big phones cannibalising shipments and more worried about market saturation."
Jitesh Ubrani, Research Analyst, Worldwide Tablet Tracker, added that it won't be easy for Microsoft devices.
"For months, Microsoft and Intel have been promising more affordable Windows tablets and 2-in-1 devices," he said.
"This holiday season, we expect a huge push for these devices as both companies flex their marketing muscles; however we still don't expect them to gain much traction. We're already halfway through the holiday quarter, and though there have been some relatively high-profile launches from the likes of Dell, HP, and Lenovo, we've yet to see widespread availability of these devices, making it difficult for Windows to gain share during this crucial period."

Overkill Software has released the first weapon pack for Payday 2, titled the 'Gage Weapon Pack #01'.
The pack, which is available now via Steam for $4.99/£3.99, adds frag grenades for the first time in the series, along with three new guns; The Signature .40 pistol, Eagle Heavy rifle and the SpecOps submachine gun.
Additionally, players will be able to don four new animal-themed masks, and player weapon slots have been increased significantly from 18 to 72.
The update also enables all players to toggle between Single- and Auto-fire modes with all full-auto weapons. Ten new achievements have also been added.
Overkill Software has previously revealed plans to release five Payday 2 DLC packs. The Gage Weapon Pack #01 is the second DLC offering, after the add-on mission Armored Transport.
In our Payday 2 review we said: "With friends, it's one of the most intense, thrilling co-op multiplayer games we've played.
"The unpredictability of the randomisation can make even heists you've played a dozen times feel fresh, throwing new surprises at you. Making it past seemingly impossible odds with a fat bag of money slung over your shoulder is hugely rewarding."

'The desktop or laptop is now in decline,' writes John Sall, 'squeezed from one side by mobile platforms and from the other side by the cloud. As a developer of desktop software [by choice not necessity], I believe it is time to address the challenges to our viability. Is software for the desktop PC now the living dead, or zombieware.' While conceding there's some truth to truisms about the death of the desktop, Sall believes there's still life in the old desktop dog, 'We live in a world of computing where dreams come true,' Sall concludes. 'The mainframe bows to the minicomputer. The minicomputer bows to the personal computer. The personal computer bows to the tablet and smart phone. It seems as if these will soon bow to the smart watch or smart glasses. But at each step along the way, some applications find their best home – and other applications as well as new applications find the more convenient and smaller home better...So let's keep our desktops and laptops, our PCs and Macs. They are amazingly good at what they do.

Extreme bandwidth is nice, intelligent power management is cool... but folks should be spilling into the streets in thankful praise that the next generation miniature USB connector will fit either way. All told — just how many intricate miracle devices have been scrapped in their prime — because a tiny USB port was mangled? For millennia untold chimpanzees and people have been poking termite mounds with round sticks. I for one am glad to see round stick technology make its way into consumer electronics. Death to the trapezoid, bring back the rectangle! So... since we're on roll here... how many other tiny annoyances that lead to big fails are out there?"The new connector will be smaller too.

Reviews are coming in for the Dell Venue 8 tablet, a device that shows the power of Intel-powered tablets running Windows 8.1. The Verge said: “The promise of Intel’s latest Bay Trail processor is better performance and battery life. Dell’s Venue 8 Pro certainly delivers on both.”
The Dell Venue 8 features an Intel Atom processor Z3740 (1.3GHz Quad-Core) which gives it PC-like performance and the ability to run the full version of Windows 8.1. While many tablets are used purely for consuming media, devices that run the full version of Windows 8.1 can be used for productivity, and could even replace laptops and primary computers. Many Windows 8 tablets also offer docking stations, Miracast wireless display and digitising stylus support, further boosting your productivity and connectivity options. You can also boost the storage capacity with microSD support.
Not only are Windows 8.1 tablets proving useful as laptop replacements for tasks like presentations and mobile working (often coming packed with Microsoft Office), but they are no slouch when it comes to graphical performance as well. In Babylon.js testing, the Dell Venue 8 was shown to give an impressive framerate (just shy of a consistent 30fps), which really showcases the power.
It is certainly worth considering developing apps for Windows 8 when there are so many exciting new devices being released. Intel has a series ofwebinars for mastering Windows 8 to help you get the most out of developing apps for the operating system.

Astroman developer StarQuail Games has released its Rastan-inspired retro side-scroller Tiny Barbarian DX via Steam, bringing its pint-sized hero to the end of a long journey from freeware experiment to crowdfunded success story.
Taking its cues from muscled classics like Golden Axe and the Conan the Barbarian film series, Tiny Barbarian DX pits a miniscule warrior against armies of sword-wielding foes and mythical beasts in between bouts of tricky platforming challenges. Originally released as a freeware game, Tiny Barbariangrew larger in size and scope (if not stature) after a successful Kickstarter campaign, and later won community approval at Steam Greenlight.
Tiny Barbarian DX is normally priced at $9.99, but is available for $5.99 at Steam during its launch week. Steam keys are currently being sent to Kickstarter backers.

Glitch-induced woes continue for Battlefield 4 players this week as Dice releases the China Rising expansion to a new slate of game-breaking technical glitches.
Following a troubled launch that prompted a good-will double XP event, new issues with the China Rising DLC have been widespread enough for EA to publish a post specifically addressing the most common problems players are encountering.
"While exploring new battlegrounds in the Battlefield 4 expansion, China Rising, you may run into an occasional hiccup, issue, glitch, or problem that could interrupt or prohibit your gameplay," said the firm.
For those "asked to download China Rising after already downloading an update", EA says, "Please be sure to download both the patch and the China Rising downloadable content in order to play."
"After downloading your game update, make sure you've downloaded and installed China Rising by heading to the in-game store on console, while PC players simply need to jump into their Origin client, click on Battlefield 4, then the gray "i" information icon, select the China Rising tile and click download," it adds.
PC players being kicked from China Rising servers will have to wait for Dice to issue a fix. "DICE have identified the issue and is implementing a solution to the problem. This fix will take some time to be fully completed, but players should be noticing normal gameplay behavior soon," said EA.
And for Xbox 360 players who are completely unable to join China Rising games, EA said, "We're investigating this issue and will provide updates as quickly as possible."
The Battlefield 4 China Rising DLC launched on all platforms for Battlefield Premium members Tuesday. Premium subscribers will receive exclusive access to the content for two weeks before it's released to the general public on December 17. China Rising was also offered as a Battlefield 4 pre-order bonus.
A new Battlefield 4 China Rising gameplay video released earlier shows off the Rush game mode on the new Dragon Pass map on Xbox One.

New Kinect for Windows to include Xbox One sensor’s upgrades
Microsoft has begun dispatching its latest Kinect senser to PC developers.
The Kinect for Windows v2 Developer Preview kits are being sent tothousands of developers who signed up for the $399 programme.
The kit includes a pre-release Kinect for Windows v2 sensor and access to a new version of the Kinect for Windows SDK, as well as ongoing updates and access to private program forums.
Developers will also receive the final Kinect for Windows v2 sensor when it becomes available in summer 2014.
The new Kinect for Windows v2 sensor will contain the core capabilities of the new Kinect for Xbox One sensor. These features include a dramatically expanded field of view for greater line of sight, a greater level of gesture tracking for more precise control and more advanced voice recognition technology.
The first versions of Kinect for Xbox 360 and Windows have seen the motion tracking and heat sensor used in all kinds of ways by developers and businesses, such as the medical industry and educational institutions.
Accompanying its announcement about the kits, the firm said: “Microsoft is committed to making the Kinect for Windows sensor and SDK available early to qualifying developers and designers so they can prepare to have their new-generation applications ready in time for general availability next summer. We continue to see a groundswell for Kinect for Windows.
“Microsoft believes that the opportunities for revolutionising computing experiences will be even greater with this new sensor. The benefits will raise the bar and accelerate the development of NUI applications across multiple industries, from retail and manufacturing to healthcare, education, communications and more.”

The battle of children’s tablets is heating up this Christmas – and vendors are urging tech retailers not to let the lucrative sector pass them by.
Devices such as the VTech InnoTab, LeapFrog LeapPad and KD UK’s Kurio are strong in the UK market, which was worth some £50 million in 2012 and is set to surpass £80 million this year, with nearly one million unit sales, according to NPD Group.
“I think PC stores are missing out,” VTech Electronics Europe senior brand manager Andrew Welch told PCR.
“Kids are becoming more and more used to computers and in recent years tablets – for enjoyment and within schools.”
KD UK’s marketing and licensing director Tracey Devine agreed: “This category is simply in its infancy – it seems that tablets are topping all children’s lists this year.”
Samsung has also entered the fray after launching its Galaxy Tab 3 Kids in November, making it one of the first tech giants hoping to take a bite out of the growing sector.
“We have high ambitions for this segment given the initial market feedback and believe it will continue to grow,” a Samsung spokesperson commented.
“Although it has been designed to provide a controlled environment suitable for children, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids can also be used as a fully functioning Android tablet, broadening its scope and differentiating it from other competitors in this space.”
However, established specialists do not fear Samsung’s presence in their category.
“I think it will become more challenging for new tablets trying to establish themselves in this market area,” commented VTech’s Welch, who believes the sector will be more competitive this Christmas than it was in 2012.
“VTech is an experienced leading company in the market for children’s technology and the InnoTab 3S is in a strong position to be the top kids tablet for this Christmas.”
KD UK’s Devine said of Samsung’s move: “We welcome the competition but we’ve got the only tablet in the marketplace loved by kids and trusted by parents. No one offers a tablet such as Kurio – entirely with families in mind.”
Tesco and Argos have also launched their own-brand tablets for the festive period. “We are keen to avoid a ‘race to the bottom’ [over price],” Argos technology trading manager Simon Barry told PCR.

Microsoft's on the, erm, threshold of something big -- something that's likely to make its three major operating systems even more similar. Queen of Microsoft leaks Mary Jo Foley has caught word from some unnamed contacts that the next major update to the Windows family is codenamed 'Threshold.' That name comes from an internal email from EVP Terry Myerson. The codename reportedly covers updates to Windows, Windows Phone and the Xbox One operating system, bringing even more commonality to the three OSes. The Threshold is title more than just a big abstraction -- it's actually borrowed from the original Halo game, following the Cortana codename the company adopted for its forthcoming personal assistant offering.
Among the shared, cross-OS features are single, unified app store and tool sets designed to further entice developers to create applications for all three. Naturally, none of the higher-ups at Microsoft are confirming the existence of Threshold yet, but Foley's projecting a spring 2015 release for the upgrades.

It was just over a month ago when NVIDIA's handheld, Shield, got the ability tostream Android games to TVs at 1080p resolution via Console Mode. Today, it can now do the same for PC games thanks to a software update that also brings improvements to 720p streaming mode and its Gamepad Mapper feature, too. Of course, the Gamestream technology that powers Shield streaming officially supports a limited number of games at the moment, with Batman: Arkham Origins, Borderlands 2 and Assasin's Creed IV: Black Flag among the highlights. In all, 63 games are currently available to stream in full HD, with more titles scheduled to be added every week.
With Gamepad Mapper, users can now map motion controls to physical ones. So, instead of tilting your handheld from side to side in the games designed to do so, you can map those gyro inputs to the Shield's thumbsticks instead. And, to better let folks know of all the custom control possibilities, NVIDIA is rolling out a community beta feature that lets folks share and rate different control map profiles. Lastly, if you have a Shield and live in Northern California, you can now get in on NVIDIA's GRID beta. For folks who aren't familiar, GRID is NVIDIA's cloud gaming technology, similar to Gaikai and OnLive. So, folks with a sub-40ms ping time to NVIDIA's San Jose, Calif., servers and a minimum 10 Mbps connection through a GameStream-ready router can get exclusive access to the service's library of games on their Shield. Looks like Christmas came early, folks, so head on down to the source for the info needed to grab all the goodies.
