DayZ isn’t the only alpha sandbox game currently selling in a very high numbers of Steam.
Indeed, while Dean Hall’s zombie sim may be grabbing all the headlines there’s another game that’s also “firing shots”at traditional publishing models – Rust.
Developed by the team behind the successful Gary’s Mod, Rust places gamers into a sandbox world of survival where the environment and rival players pose a constant threat.
The alpha, which was released a week before DayZ on December 11th, sold 150,000 copies in its first two weeks. It costs £14.99 and currently sits at No.2 in the Steam charts behind DayZ.
“Sales have been strong. Stronger than strong,” Facepunch’s Garry Newman said. “We really have been knocked on our arses by sales.
“Our plan was to release the alpha on to Steam in a low-key way and slowly build up steam until the game was in a decent state. But our player counts have exploded our wildest dreams.
“So we’ve obviously felt a bit shell-shocked by the popularity explosion we’ve seen and it’s scrambled our plans a bit. We’ve had to work with GSP’s to bring more servers online. This is something we didn’t think we’d have to do for a while because we thought we’d only need about ten servers.
“We’re going to be working hard to help you justify spending that $20 on our early alpha game and hope you enjoy the progress we make over the coming year.”
As for a potential console, release, Newman added: “A console release isn’t out of the question. But it’s not something we’re going to be dedicating lots of time to right now.”
Which pretty much mirrors the situation with DayZ. With Hall recently saying that his game is unlikely to even exit alpha until the end of the year at the earliest, any potential console release at this stage seems a long, long way off.

Following a month of beta testing, developer inXile Entertainment has outlined its plans for post-apocalyptic roleplaying game Wasteland 2, and it looks like the studio has its work cut out for it.
Alongside the typical bug fixes, inXile hopes to focus primarily on improving the game's combat mechanics. "Destructible cover was part of this last update as a first pass with more fine-tuning to come," writes creator Brian Fargo on the game's Kickstarter page. "[W]e will likely add a crouching stance with a variety of tactical applications; we're going over a lot of the encounter design to more carefully detail tactics-changing factors like ladders or destructible cover; and we're in the first testing stages to explore adding a special attack system that'll allow you to invest AP to make specific kinds of attacks based on your weapon types and the skill levels you've achieved in those weapons ... things like spread shots or steady shots."
Fargo adds that combat in Wasteland 2 is currently in the very early stages of development and that the final version of the game will feature vastly improved enemy AI, as well as additional special attacks and skills that can damage groups of enemies.
Beyond combat improvements, inXile's list of goals for Wasteland 2 is lengthy. It includes "several balance passes on everything in the world," creating a new minimap, changing the in-game font, tweaking the UI seen when bartering with other characters, and adding additional, "satisfying" death animations, among a host of other changes.

Ubisoft's free-to-play third-person shooter Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online will be given a Steam launch worldwide in spring.
While holding off committing to a specific launch date, the publisher did confirm that the game has been released via Steam Early Access in Canada only today, January 14, where it will be 'fine tuned' ahead of its global Steam launch.
The free-to-play multiplayer game was released in beta form for PC in August 2012, and has reached an audience of around four million registered users, according to Ubisoft.
"Bringing Ghost Recon Online to Steam has been our goal since the game's inception," said producer Corey Facteau in today's announcement.
"We took the time necessary to reach a quality level that can go head to head with the best online games available today before releasing on Steam," he said.
"To ensure a seamless transition to the new platform, we will use Early Access to fine tune the Ghost Recon Online experience before releasing it to the rest of the world."
A previously in-development Wii U version of the game was put "on hold" indefinitely as the Singapore studio said it wanted to "focus on the PC version".

The lead engineer of SimCity's upcoming offline mode says his team has spent more than 6 months reworking significant parts of the game's architecture.
Simon Fox wrote on the SimCity Blog that responding to fan calls for a mode that could be played offline and saved and reloaded required a great deal of effort.
"[O]ur entire architecture was written to support [networked play], from the way that the simulation works to the way that you communicate across a region of cities," Fox said. "So yes, while someone was able to remove the 'time check' shortly after launch, they were unable to perform key actions like communicating with other cities that they had created locally, or with the rest of their region(s), or even saving the current state of their cities."
Fox went on to detail the changes necessary to get an offline mode up and running. For instance, the original game relied on communicating with servers for region status and other information via a Java-based system. Letting this information be distributed offline meant rewriting the entire system in C++. Optimizations were necessary to ensure all computers that could already run SimCity in online mode could handle these additional calculations.
"Even things that seem trivial, like the way that cities are saved and loaded, had to be completely reworked in order to make this feature function correctly," Fox added.
The offline mode is in the final stages of testing and will arrive with SimCity's Update 10. The update will also allow offline players to install mods, though they appear to to be limited to cosmetic customizations.

January 15th, 2014, 00:47 Posted By: wraggster
In addition to crowning Cristiano Ronaldo its world player of the year last night, football's governing body FIFA also named its Team of the Year, prompting EA Sports to update FIFA Ultimate Team with special one-off in-form versions of each of the players selected. This would go nicely in my Bundesliga XI. Fat chance, mind you.
This is an annual tradition for the FIFA series and means that blue TOTY cards for each player boasting increased stats will make their way into Ultimate Team packs over the next few days. First up are the goalkeeper and defenders, available in packs until 6pm GMT Wednesday night. Midfield and attack will presumably follow in short order. The TOTY world XI, then, lines up like this (I've included the full stats we know about so far and left the others as just midfield and forwards, and yes FIFA did choose two right-backs): - GK: Manuel Neuer - 94 OVR - 95 DIV, 89 HAN, 96 KIC, 94 REF, 61 SPD, 89 POS
- RB: Philipp Lahm - 94 OVR - 85 PAC, 64 SHO, 92 PAS, 88 DRI, 92 DEF, 75 HEA
- RB: Dani Alves - 91 OVR - 95 PAC, 78 SHO, 88 PAS, 91 DRI, 86 DEF, 80 HEA
- CB: Sergio Ramos - 93 OVR - 86 PAC, 68 SHO, 81 PAS, 79 DRI, 92 DEF, 94 HEA
- CB: Thiago Silva - 94 OVR - 87 PAC, 68 SHO, 81 PAS, 79 DRI, 95 DEF, 91 HEA
- MF: Franck Ribery
- MF: Xavier "Xavi" Hernandez
- MF: Andres Iniesta
- FW: Lionel Messi
- FW: Zlatan Ibrahimovic
- FW: Cristiano Ronaldo
If that list makes your head spin, FUThead has images of the cards released so far arranged in a neat 4-3-3.So yes, FIFA's Team of the Year consists of four players from Barcelona, three from Bayern Munich, two from Paris Saint-Germain and two from Real Madrid. The Barclays Premier League, England's "best league in the world", was presumably unavailable for comment.Exciting stuff, but what are they like to play with? Well, you and I will probably never know, because the volume of TOTY cards in circulation will be small and the price on the in-game auction house is likely to be prohibitive to the vast majority of players. However, we should start seeing player review videos popping up on the usual YouTubers' channels soon.If you do fancy trying your luck and picking up a TOTY player in a pack, though, it's a good idea to keep an eye on the EA Sports FIFA Twitter to see when "happy hour" promotions are running, which increase your chances of netting in-form players. On the plus side, at least, the spectre of Team of the Year has already driven down the second-hand price of many of the most expensive players in Ultimate Team, and may bring the non-in-form versions of the TOTY XI players into range of people who haven't got millions of FUT coins to play with. Well, in theory anyway. Let us know how you get on.

The Lord of the Rings Online licence has been renewed and will last until 2017, developer Turbine has assured fans."We plan to support LOTRO for many years to come," wrote community manager Rick Heaton in the game's forum. "I really want to be as clear as possible on this subject to avoid any further confusion or misunderstanding. The license was renewed."We have an agreement that runs through 2017," he later added.Nails it.
There had been concern about the game's future when Turbine appeared to announce that no new dungeons or raids would be developed for the game - only existing areas would possibly be revamped. This information came during an event organised by Heaton on the game's Gilrain server, which would literally take the Hobbits to Isengard - the realisation of a great internet meme. Gilrain managed the feat in one hour 23 minutes with zero deaths.During a live Twitch stream of the event (not yet available on LOTRO's Twitch page), Heaton answered questions from the community. I can't find a transcript, nor the video, but website Contains Moderate Peril summarised Heaton's responses."No new traditional instances and raids are being planned at this time," CMP wrote. In the article's comments thread the author clarified: "That statement was made in a conversation about things we should be looking forward to in 2014. It doesn't mean Turbine isn't planning other types of group content, and it doesn't mean there will never be a new traditional instance or raid again."Another answer given during the livestream that raised eyebrows was there being no plans to merge servers. Rick Heaton picked this point up in the game's forum."No," he restated. "There are no plans to merge servers."Will players from EU servers ever be able to transfer to NA servers? Unlikely, there are significant technical issues preventing it."If I'm being perfectly honest, there was really nothing new mentioned in the livestream that we haven't said before. Many of the questions were the same questions we're often asked with the same answers given."

Double Fine's massively successful Kickstarter-funded point-and-click adventure Broken Age is out today for backers, but don't despair if you missed out, as the finished public release of Broken Age: Episode One is slated to come out on 28th January on PC, Mac and Linux.Ouya, iOS and Android versions are expected to follow, though no release date has been announced for these. This official release will be sold as a $25 (about £15) season pass, so the second half will be available this spring at no extra charge."It's been sixteen years since I've made an adventure game, almost twenty years since I've made a point-and-click, and just shy of two years since I dared the internet to force me to make one," Double Fine head honcho Tim Schafer stated in the game's announcement. "Coming back to the genre has been like finding an old jacket in a box in your garage that you haven't worn in twenty years but once you shake the dust off and put it on you realise it's an amazing jacket and it still fits, and once you patch the holes in the pockets it could easily take a spot in your main jacket rotation.""Oh, and also, in one of the pockets was three and a half million dollars."Schafer went on to reminisce about the genre, as he slowly came to the realisation that it's not as archaic as its generally perceived. "Adventure games used to have a monopoly on things like story and character, as well as the best art and music in games. Now that other genres have caught up, it seems like that old monopoly is gone," he said. "But in coming back to adventure games I've realised that there is still something completely unique about them. It's not about their feature set. It's more about how you feel when you play them. The way your brain works as you explore and wrestle with an adventure game is different than any other experience, and it's fun to wander those paths again."

How many endings can YOU find?
As usual, all bugs should be reported to our bug tracker. You can find a list of data files in the data files page on our wiki. Of particular note is the need for a copy of arial.ttf (or a similar replacement, for instance FreeSans from GNU FreeFont.) For further information, check out the bug submission guidelines.

Once again we return to the official archive of PC Player. This time we head into the fifth issue of the PC gaming magazine from April 1994. Starting off our pick of online articles, we take a look at one of the most influential video games of all time with Doom. From there we move onto the relatively unknown space trading adventure Nomad. Our next chosen review is In Extremis, an unfairly dismissed sci-fi first person shooter. And finally, keeping with the sci-fi theme, we enter the world of Star Wars: TIE Fighter with an in-depth five-page preview.

Microsoft may have just released Windows 8.1 a few months ago, but it's reportedly on the cusp of previewing its next major Windows version, Threshold. The SuperSite for Windows hears from sources that Microsoft will provide a "vision" for the OS at its Build conference in early April. While there aren't many details of what the software involves beyond an emphasis on cross-platform unity, the tipsters claim that Threshold will likely be called Windows 9 and center around a refined interface that's better-suited to desktop users. Whatever the OS looks like, don't expect to see it in action this spring. Provided the rumors are accurate, the crew in Redmond would only start work on Threshold after Build, and it would ship the finished code in April 2015. The sneak peek would mostly set expectations for developers worried about Windows' future in an unreceptive PC market.

An update for the PC version of Battlefield 4 was issued this morning, bringing with it some stability, balancing and player spawning fixes. Among the more tangible differences players will notice are tweaks to the stealth jets in the game, which see a 25 percent damage increase to their cannons and some changes in their handling attributes. DICE also fixed an issue where the friendly marker didn't always show when it was supposed to, which resulted in players shooting their teammates. Looks like you're all out of excuses for shooting at your team, Doug.

A Bible-based, third-person RPG has begun to make its way across the sands ofKickstarter; Bible Chronicles: The Call of Abraham from Phoenix Interactive Studios will place players into the shoes sandals of an Elamite outcast who joins Abraham's caravan on his journey from Haran. The creators plan to deliver the game "around Thanksgiving 2014" to PC and Mac platforms, but will also release "Xbox" and "PlayStation" versions if funding hits $250,000.
Martin Bertram, co-founder of the studio, is quoted in a press release as saying, "We keep a tight leash on what games our kids can play because a lot of what's out there conflicts with our Christian worldview." Bertram said he wanted to create a game that would "stir a hunger for God's word."
Richard Gaeta, Phoenix Interactive's other co-founder, said "we are all aware of the morally questionable messaging most [video games] promote. By financially backing this project, we can change the video game industry together and provide a game that satisfies your desire for entertainment and has a strong spiritual message."
The development team has also formed an advisory committee of pastors and ministry leaders to "maintain authenticity" and ensure historical accuracy.

Ever wonder why cats love knocking stuff off of shelves? Because it's fun, that's why. Indie developer Chris Chung tackles this aspect of feline fascination inCatlateral Damage, a first-person action game that casts the player in the role of a particularly destructive cat.
In Catlateral Damage, players hop up on overhead surfaces and send household objects crashing to the floor with repeated paw swipes. Break enough of your owner's valuables (hint: combos award point multipliers) and you win. For anyone who has never owned cats, this is a fairly accurate simulation of what their day-to-day life entails.
The current alpha version of the game is playable for free online, and is available as a free download for Windows, Mac, and Linux. A paid version is set to launch later this year via Steam Greenlight.

A little over a year after Microsoft released Windows 8, and a mere three months after it pushed out a major update with Windows 8.1, rumors abound that Windows 9 is already on its way. According to Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows, Microsoft will begin discussing the next version of Windows (codenamed 'Threshold,' at least for the moment) at April's BUILD conference. 'Threshold is more important than any specific updates, he wrote. 'Windows 8 is tanking harder than Microsoft is comfortable discussing in public, and the latest release, Windows 8.1, which is a substantial and free upgrade with major improvements over the original release, is in use on less than 25 million PCs at the moment.' Microsoft intends Threshold to clean up at least a portion of Windows 8's mess. Development on the latest operating system will supposedly begin in late April, which means developers who attend BUILD won't have access to an early alpha release—in fact, it could be quite some time before Microsoft locks down any new features, although it might double down on Windows 8's controversial 'Modern' (previously known as 'Metro') design interface. Yet if Thurrott's reporting proves correct, Microsoft isn't abandoning the new Windows interface that earned such a lackluster response—it's betting that the format, once tweaked, will somehow revive the operating system's fortunes. With Ballmer leaving the company and a major reorganization underway, it'll be the next Microsoft CEO's task to make sure that Windows 9 is a hit; in fact, considering that rumored 2015 release date, shepherding the OS could become that executive's first major test."

[h=1]Details of Microsoft’s next major Windows release are rumoured to be unveiled at the firm’s annual Build conference in April this year.
According to Microsoft blogger, Paul Thurrot, Windows 9 (codenamed ‘Threshold’) will see a full return of the Start menu and is planned for release in April 2015.
The new operating system will also allow users to run Metro apps in desktop mode.
"Maturing and fixing the "Metro" design language used by Windows will be a major focus area of Threshold," said Thurrott.
In other Microsoft news, the firm had two of its Twitter accounts and an official blog compromised over the weekend.
Hijackers claiming to belong to pro-Assad group the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) posted various messages on @MSFTnews and @XboxSupport.
One read: “Don’t use Microsoft emails (Hotmail, outlook), They are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments.”
The Official Microsoft Blog at blogs.technet.com redirected to the SEA site for a short while, but it now back to normal.
Microsoft said it is aware of the cyberattacks. The accounts were quickly reset and the firm has confirmed that no customer information was compromised.

SimCity will get an offline mode, Maxis has announced. The announcement was made today just two months shy of the game's first birthday.Players have long called for an offline mode. EA and Maxis were heavily criticised for the catastrophic launch of the game in March 2013. Upon release SimCity was unplayable for many as the always online game buckled under the weight of pressure applied to EA and Maxis' servers.Today, Maxis Emeryville chief Patrick Buechner revealed on the SimCity blog that offline will be added to the game as a free download with Update 10 to all SimCity players."When we launch it, all of your previously downloaded content will be available to you anytime, anywhere, without the need for an internet connection," he said. This will manifest itself in-game as the new single-player mode. Saved games in this mode are stored locally, so "you can save and load to your heart's content", Buechner said.Does this sound the death knell for always online SimCity? Not so, Buechner insisted."All of the benefits of being connected will remain including access to Multiplayer, the Global Market and Leaderboards," he said."And all of your pre-existing saved cities and regions will still be accessible should you log-in to the Online game."The single-player mode comes alongside the addition of modding to SimCity."From me, and everyone at the studio, thank you again for staying with us," Buechner concluded.
