StarCraft 2's "Starter Edition," the limited free-to-play version of Blizzard's popular real-time strategy sequel, receives a substantial today in North America. The update will roll out to other territories as the week progresses.
This update brings StarCraft 2 "Starter Edition" up to version 2.1, unlocking all three races (Terrans, Zerg and Protoss) and providing access to custom maps to the entire internet. These custom maps can be accessed through Blizzard Arcade, the free game-hosting platform and editing suite offered by Blizzard through StarCraft 2. So if someone creates the next DOTA, which was created as a custom game type in Warcraft 3 and based on a custom StarCraft map, and publishes it to Blizzard Arcade, then everyone in the world will have access to it – not just those who own StarCraft 2.
Head past the break for another pair of videos, produced by Blizzard, going into more detail about Blizzard Arcade.

A further half-century of games got their stamps of approval from Steam Greenlight this week, just a fortnight after the last batch of 50. Among the highlights this time around is Catlateral Damage, the pet project of designer Chris Chung in which you play a cheeky cat knocking objects off surfaces. Speaking as the owner of two kittens who are already experts at this game, here's to reversing roles when it launches later this year.
Another game with a feline(ish) flavor is Rain World, a stealth platformer starring a white slugcat (looks like it sounds) who hops around a grim industrial backdrop. The stylish presentation of the Windows PC and Mac game helped push it to its $25,000 funding goal on Kickstarter, and designers Joar Jakobsson and James Primate hope to reach $50,000 to enlist help in switching to a more modern dev tool and facilitating a Linux port.

Budding game developers and the modding community just got a big boost:Blizzard has made access to The Arcade in StarCraft 2completely free for everyone. That means that customs maps and modes developed for StarCraft 2(as well as Blizzard's other games: Starjeweled, Auir Chef, and Left 2 Die) can now be accessed by anyone, not just the players who already own the game and use the platform regularly. Blizzard is basically giving the community the tools to build their own games and enlarging the pool of potential players -- all for no fee whatsoever. Check out the details in the videos below, then grab thestarter edition and let your creative juices flow.

EA's Ronku program offers YouTube personalities extra cash for covering specific aspects of EA games, with rules regarding what the players can say or show on-camera. For the "Battlefield 4 Launch" Ronku assignment, YouTubers wouldn't receive compensation if they made "a video that focuses on glitches in the game," according to a document posted to NeoGAF. Compensation for theBattlefield 4 Launch assignment was $10 per CPM with a cap of 20 million views, or $200,000.
"Through EA's Ronku program, some fans are compensated for the YouTube videos they create and share about our games," an EA spokesperson told The Verge. "The program requires that participants comply with FTC guidelines and identify when content is sponsored. User-generated videos are a valuable and unique aspect of how gamers share their experiences playing the games they love, and one that EA supports."
Asked whether YouTubers openly disclose their participation in the Ronku program, the spokesperson said, "We explicitly state in the Terms & Conditions of the program that each video must comply with the FTC's Guidelines concerning Use of Testimonials and Endorsements in Advertising."
The FTC's Guidelines on Use of Testimonials and Endorsements in Advertising,in PDF form here, offer examples of personalities who would have to disclose the compensation, and those who wouldn't. In Example 7 of § 255.5, disclosure of material connections, the FTC states that a blogger reviewing a game would have to share his connection to the company if he received that product for free.
Microsoft also has a YouTube bonus program for presenting positive coverage of its products, which it calls "a typical marketing partnership."

A newly released mod for the 2013 PC version of Mossmouth's roguelike platformer Spelunky enables custom seed functionality, allowing players to bypass the game's random level generator and replay specific level layouts.
The "Seedlunky HD" mod automatically generates repeatable level layouts based on any entered text string. The added utility is especially useful for competitive purposes; players can distribute seeds among friends, subjecting them to particularly challenging levels. See if you can create a series of dark stages filled with tons of instant-kill spikes. Your friends will love you for it.
Spelunky already offers a similar feature in its Daily Challenge mode, which pits all players against pre-designed level layouts as they compete for leaderboard rank. Daily Challenge levels are only playable once, however, whereas Seedlunky HD-generated levels can be loaded and replayed at will.

Alienware's Steam Machines won't be easily upgraded, but there will be a new model each year, Alienware General Manager Frank Azor told Trusted Reviews.
"Lifecycle wise, consoles update every five, six, seven years. We will be updating our Steam Machines every year," Azor said.
There will be no customization options in Alienware's Steam Machines, Azor continued: "You can't really update it." Customers will have small range of configurations to choose from, such as more memory or a faster CPU, he said. Those who want to beef up their machines on their own are better off with a standard PC, Azor noted – after all, anyone can turn a PC into a Steam Machineby buying a Steam Controller and downloading SteamOS.
"If you actually want to customize your Alienware Steam Machine, maybe change your graphics card out or put in a new CPU, you would be better off with the standard Alienware X51. This particular product is restricted in its upgrade options."
The first round of Alienware Steam Machines are due to hit retail in September.

Hitman: Contracts, the third entry in IO Interactive's stealth murder series, is finally available for individual purchase on Steam. Previously the game was only available as part of the Hitman HD Trilogy, which bundled Hitman 2,Hitman: Contracts and Hitman: Blood Money into one convenient wannabe-murderer's package.
A music licensing issue surrounding a track in the "Rendezvous in Rotterdam" mission prevented Hitman: Contracts from being re-released as a standalone game on Steam. The Hitman HD Trilogy was able to sneakily sidestep this issue by replacing the song altogether; however, Steam users are currently reportingHitman: Contracts has had its entire soundtrack and voice over tracks removed in the Steam version, so we've reached out to Square Enix for comment.
Hitman: Contracts, compatible with Windows PC, will set chrome dome assassins back $7 on Steam.

Microsoft vowed that it would fix the numerous bugs plaguing the Surface Pro 2 in the wake of the flawed December update, and it made good on that promise byrolling out a patch this weekend. The company tells us that the update addresses the most serious problems for affected tablet owners, including reduced battery life and unexpected wake-ups. Future software will tackle the remaining glitches, Redmond says. The partial remedy isn't quite what some were hoping for -- we're still seeing a few complaints -- but it's at least a step in the right direction. Check out Microsoft's full statement below.

After a rollercoaster half-decade or so of development, Thief is barely a month away from our lives. If that scarcely sounds conceivable, the proof is in the presently procured parchment: Eidos Montreal posted the stealthy reboot's system specs.
Square Enix once again turned to conversion specialist Nixxes for the PC port; the two have worked together on several projects over the last decade or so. As for the PC specs, the good news is you probably won't have to make off with a friend's uber-system to play it. For the full list of minimum and recommended specs, check past the break.
Thief is also coming to Xbox One, PS4, PS3 and Xbox 360, and is due to finally reach all those platforms on February 25 in North America, and February 28 in Europe.

DayZ has for the first time since its release in December been knocked off the top of Steam’s best selling list.
And its conqueror? None other than fellow early access sandbox title Rust.
Of course it’s unlikely that Rust’s overall sales have caught up with DayZ. It was announced on January 14th that DayZ had passed 1m sales while Dust sales stood at 150,000 copies as of Christmas Eve.
Note that Steam’s weekly chart, which specify the best selling title over the last seven days, still lists DayZ at No.1 and Rust at No.2. It’s not clear what time period the Steam’s standard best selling list covers, although as it’s updated daily it’s logical to conclude it covers the previous 24 hours.
Rust creator Garry Newman told Games Industry earlier today that Rust is on track to rival the revenue generated by his successful debut project Garry’s Mod, stating:
“We never, ever expected anything to dwarf GMod's success. I did some rough maths this morning: in terms of profits, from sales and royalties, in a month Rust has made about 40 per cent of what GMod has made in about nine years. We can't really believe it.”
Garry’s Mod has to date sold 3.5 copies, generating over $22m in revenue. This number points to total life-to-date revenues of at least $8.8m for Rust.

The Indie Stone will add multiplayer to zombie survival RPG Project Zomboid soon, it's announced."Online multiplayer with persistent player run servers!" reads an excited blog post. "Yes!"While the maximum player count is yet to be decided, tests supported up to 12 players."Anyone with a copy of PZ will be able to launch their own dedicated console only PZ server just by passing the appropriate parameters to the executable (or running a batch file, or whatever) with whitelists and blacklists, choice of co-op or PvP (purposefully defaulted to co-op to ram the point home) and all that goodness," the developer explained. The Inide Stone plans for split-screen to work with the multiplayer once it's up and running, so perhaps up to four players will be able to play on a single machine. So, when's multiplayer out? It won't be tomorrow, The Indie Stone said, "but hopefully it's clear that it's not far off"."Though 'not far off' doesn't necessarily mean this week, or next week. But then again that's in the realm of remote possibility none-the-less."It all really depends on how well future tests go and what new issues crop up, but it's certainly not months away - or 'next year' as per previous community estimates."

We’ve all gotten bored of certain toys and left them on the shelf for months on end. But what do you do when this prolonged period kills the batteries? Well if you’re [Andrew] you take apart the battery pack and bring it back to life!
[Andrew] picked up one of those Panasonic Toughbooks awhile back and although it’s hardly a top of the line laptop specs-wise, it does have some pretty cool features: it’s shock-proof, splash-proof, and extreme-temperature-proof. It even had a touch screen before touchscreens were cool. Despite its durability, however, the laptop was left to sit for a bit too long, and the battery pack no longer accepted a charge.
[Andrew] quickly disassembled the battery pack and began measuring the cells with his trusty multimeter, assuming just one cell had gone bad. Curiously though, no cells reported 0V. What he did find was that each cell and sub-pack reported 2.95V, which is 0.05V below the “safe operating limits” of typical lithium ion cells.

Microsoft indicated this week that it has fixed a Windows XP resource-hog problem associated with the system's SVCHOST.EXE processes. Windows XP users affected by this problem typically found that the operating system was using up system resources for 15 minutes to an hour after startup, making it difficult to use the machine during that period. The Microsoft Update team had vowed last month to spend the holiday break tackling the issue, which has plagued some users for years. The fix involved stopping the system from perpetually checking Internet Explorer updates. Microsoft indicated that the fix was rolled out on Tuesday."

A Wi-Fi-connected refrigerator was one of 100,000 smart devices behind a malicious spam email cyberattack.
According to security firm Proofpoint, the devices, which also included smart TVs and media players, were part of a network used to send 750,000 spam emails between December 23rd and January 6th.
Hackers have used networks of compromised computers to power large-scale cyberattacks for decades, but this attack marks the first time that non-computer devices have been recorded as being used in such a manner.
“Internet-enabled devices represent an enormous threat because they are easy to penetrate, consumers have little incentive to make them more secure, the rapidly growing number of devices can send malicious content almost undetected, few vendors are taking steps to protect against this threat, and the existing security model simply won’t work to solve the problem,” explained security analyst Michael Osterman.
“Bot-nets are already a major security concern and the emergence of ‘thingbots’ may make the situation much worse,” added Proofpoint security manager Dave Knight.

Microsoft announced last year that Games for Windows would shut down its marketplace features on August 22, 2013, signaling the beginning of the end for the service. Never quite achieving its desired critical mass, GFWL handled DRM, achievements, and multiplayer for a long list of games.
A since-deleted support article for Age of Empires Online stated that the GFWL service would be discontinued on July 1, 2014. Although Microsoft has not yet made an official announcement on the matter, a number of developers took this to mean that their games would effectively become unplayable in July and began work to divorce them from GFWLs, often switching over to Steamworks.
However, a large number of developers remained quiet about plans, so Joystiq reached out to get the official word on what the future may hold for their games past July.

Etherium is a new real-time strategy game in development at Tindalos Interactive that, like so many before it, sees players battling over a precious resource that is both futuristic and totally fictional: The titular "etherium."
"The solo campaign in Etherium is non-linear: You are free to decide how your conquests progress," states publisher Focus Home Interactive. "Manage your resources, expand your colonies and extend your control of the map to assemble an army capable of crushing your opponents. Epic battles will ensue between formidable armies comprising numerous units: infantry, tanks, aircraft, and even gigantic colossi of war several meters high; real machines of destruction! You will also use scientific research to develop a tech tree enabling you to unlock new units and upgrades, access new structures to develop your colony and to use new special skills."
So far, so typical of the genre, but where Etherium differentiates itself is in its "dynamic weather system." According to examples offered by Focus Home Interactive, players might use a rolling sandstorm to cover their advance into an enemy base, or wait for a river to freeze before using the newly formed ice bridge as a staging point for a sneak attack.
Above you'll find Etherium's debut trailer while screenshots can be found in the gallery below. For more information, visit the game's official website.

In lieu of offering yet another downloadable content pack for Total War: Rome 2, developer Creative Assembly has opted to let fans roll their own units, factions and conflicts with the release of the Rome 2 Assembly Kit.
Though still in the beta stages, the Assembly Kit is a full-featured suite of tools useful in modding the historical strategy game. According to publisher Sega, the Kit includes everything necessary to modify the game's existing assets, as well as import/export tools for pulling artwork, audio and character models into the game from third-party programs. The Kit also includes a swath of "example data" which should be useful for nascent modders.
The best news, however, is that the Assembly Kit is available free of charge to anyone with a copy of Total War: Rome 2 and an Internet connection. Full details on the Kit and information on how to download the tools can be found on the Total War Wiki.
