Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures and Free Realms go dark in March; Vanguard and Wizardry Online to follow in July
[h=3]Sony Online Entertainment[/h]sonyonline.com
Sony Online Entertainment is pulling the plug on four of its online games. The company today announced that Free Realms and Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures would shut down on March 31, with Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and Wizardry Online going dark July 31.
"At Sony Online Entertainment, we are always evaluating our portfolio to ensure we're providing players with the best gameplay experiences," a representative said. "At times, as part of this commitment, we have to make the difficult decision to sunset a game so we can refocus our resources on other areas in the best interest of our company and player community."
In the case of Free Realms and Star Wars, Sony Online Entertainment said both games were seeing their audiences moving on to other games. In Vanguard's case, the company said there were increasing technical challenges involved with updating the older title (it launched in 2007), and the player base could no longer justify the resources. For Wizardry Online, the closure is the result of a mutual agreement between SOE and licensing partner Gamepot to end the arrangement.
While the closures don't happen for months yet, SOE said it was announcing them now in the spirit of full transparency, and to give players time to plan accordingly.

Version 1.4.0 of the most intellectually challenging OSS game out there (IMO), OpenTTD (Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe), is near at hand. Of course, most servers are still running 1.3.3 (the last stable, major version change, from November/December-ish). N-Ice.org typically waits until a stable release has been around for a minute to implement the changes into its online client (which is as yet unavailable as a binary for Linux; it varies only slightly from the official release and non-Windows users are able to interface with it no problem), but there are exciting developments coming down the pipe for OpenTTD. 'The new SSE blitters were also further improved. Not immediately noticeable but useful in the future, are the new string codes to display amounts of cargo in NewGRFs. For our Korean users, the separators in numbers were fixed.' Here is some information on the history of OTTD."

Pre-ordering games you're really excited about makes sense, but so does canceling said pre-order once you get suspicious that a game won't turn out to be any good. Changing your mind used to be a bit of a process on Steam, since canceling pre-orders required going through the service's support system. That seems to have changed, though - Steam users have reported the surprise appearance of a "Refund an item" button that displays on a user's store transactions page.
Reddit user lak3108 posted an image from his Steam account showing his refunded Resident Evil 4 HD purchase. The image states the funds were refunded as a wallet credit that can be used toward future purchases.
Shortening transaction processes will always be a welcome thing, so it's great to see that people can manage their Steam shopping with a bit less hassle. Just don't pre-order everything you've ever wanted and then change your mind once a game you forget about releases.

Despite Microsoft ending support for Windows XP on April 8th, Panda Security has confirmed its corporate solution, Panda Cloud Office Protection, will continue to support Windows XP users.
Although Microsoft will no longer provide technical assistance for the operating system after April, users will still be able to continue using Windows XP, albeit knowing that their computers will be more vulnerable to security risks in general and malware in particular.
“It is very important for us to keep our commitments to our customers,” explained Manuel Santamar*a, Global Product Manager at Panda Security.
“Nearly 50 per cent of the two million computers currently protected with Panda Cloud Office Protection have Windows XP installed, so for our customers it is extremely important that we continue supporting this operating system, particularly after their systems lose product support on April 8th, leaving them vulnerable”.
Panda Security recommends that Windows XP users take additional precautions after April, and follow general security best practices to prevent malware infections until they upgrade their operating systems to a safer version.

Anxious to see just how purty Resident Evil 4's textures will be on the PC when the game makes its HD return to the platform? Capcom-Unity has released some comparison screens showing the greater detail afforded by the new port.
Capcom has added a lot more detail to Leon's jacket as well as the many trees littered around Resident Evil 4's rural Spanish setting. Wooden boards have more defined textures too, and the HD version supports maximum resolutions of up to 2560x1600 and 2560x1440.
Resident Evil 4 first launched on the PC in 2007 from developer Sourcenext. The original PC port, screens for which you can see in our gallery below, included multiple widescreen resolution options along with bonus content previously only available through the PS2 version of the game. Capcom issued only one post-launch patch designed to correct issues around Resident Evil 4's problematic shadows and lighting on PC.
Resident Evil 4 HD, compatible with Windows PC, launches on Steam next month, on February 28 for $20. Resident Evil 4 HD is also available on Xbox 360 and PS3.

Vehicles, camping, hunting, base building and an improved stamina system are in the works for Bohemia Interactive's survival game, DayZ. Creator Dean Hall recently took to Reddit for an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, where he revealed the upcoming additions to the game.
The new features are expected to be available in-game sometime within the next six months. "Vehicles will be done based on the architecture we are doing for items/weapons now (i.e. attachments)," Hall wrote. "So it's in progress really. We are replacing the physics system for items (throwing, etc...) and this new middleware will be used for vehicles also."
For those less inclined to murder their fellow humans, Hall also teased more PvE content such as hunting, camping, and base-building. Bases, Hall noted, will take longer to achieve. Barricades are expected to be the first step toward their eventual full implementation.
Hall wrote on Twitter that there will be "experimental" patches for the game regularly, and that updates will be moved to stable status once per month.

Cloud Imperium Games have run a thorough pre-flight check and flipped the switch on Star Citizen's clan system, referred to as Organizations. Eager citizens can now register or join an Organization, but you only get to align yourself with one for now, so choose wisely.
Organizations will get their own URL and customizable websites (think of it like Facebook for space flight aficionados) where users can interact with one another and ... well ... organize themselves. The launch of Organizations also brings with it a new Live Chat system, which allows users to separate themselves into their own rooms, so that the rest of the universe doesn't have to know what you and your crew are up to.
Organizations are pretty basic right now, but Cloud Imperium Games notes on the announcement page that they have "extensive long-range plans" to improve the experience over time. "Our goal with the Organization system, like the Hangar and Dogfighting modules, is to allow the Star Citizen community to get a foot in the door and start experiencing (and expanding) the Star Citizen'verse as soon as possible," the post states. "Remember: organizations isn't just about letting you group together with friends and gamers, it's about backers beginning to shape Star Citizen's lore!"

"Last year Google rolled out a new feature for the desktop version of Chrome that enabled support for voice recognition directly into the browser. In September, a developer named Tal Ater found a bug that would allow a malicious site to record through your microphone even after you'd told it to stop. Quoting: 'When you grant an HTTPS site permission to use your mic, Chrome will remember your choice, and allow the site to start listening in the future, without asking for permission again. This is perfectly fine, as long as Chrome gives you clear indication that you are being listened to, and that the site can't start listening to you in background windows that are hidden to you. When you click the button to start or stop the speech recognition on the site, what you won't notice is that the site may have also opened another hidden popunder window. This window can wait until the main site is closed, and then start listening in without asking for permission. This can be done in a window that you never saw, never interacted with, and probably didn't even know was there.' Ater reported this to Google in September, and they had a fix ready a few days later. But they haven't rolled it out yet — they can't decide whether or not it's the proper way to block this behavior. Thus: the exploit remains. Ater has published the source code for the exploit to encourage Google to fix it."

Disney has dispatched beta invites for its upcoming free-to-play space shooter Star Wars: Attack Squadrons.
The beta test will run until January 28 and require at least Windows 7 or Mac OS X 10.6 with 4GB RAM, Venture Beat reports.
Attack Squadrons is in development at new Seattle-based studio Area 52 Games and allows for 16-player dogfights and the ability to customise "iconic Star Wars ships" including Tie-Fighters and X-Wings.
The game will also feature team-based and base defence type modes, as well as various unlockable rewards.
Interested parties can sign up for the beta test via the game's website, though it appears to be restricted to North American residents.
The Attack Squadron name was first spotted publicly in July when parent company Disney registered about four dozen domain names.
Following the agreement of a multi-year deal between EA and Disney , Battlefield maker DICE, Visceral Games and BioWare are set to develop Star Wars games.

New developments made to the SteamOS beta have introduced dual-boot and custom partition capabilities.
This essentially allows SteamOS users to create a custom partition on their hard drive and install a second operating system - such as Windows - alongside SteamOS. Previously SteamOS users were unable to install any other OSs.
Dual-boot and custom partitioning can be accessed via the "Expert Install" option, explains Valve.
It also warns users, "There has been very little testing on this, especially any kind of dual-boot setup. So don't install it on any machine you are not prepared to lose."
Other recent SteamOS updates improved AMD graphics card support.
Valve recently confirmed significant changes to its design plans for the Steam Controller, including abandoning plans for a central touch screen, and the introduction of more conventional face buttons.

Passage and Sleep is Death developer Jason Rohrer is giving away cold hard cash and weaponry as part of a week long promotion celebrating the launch of The Castle Doctrine, his MMO strategy game about burglary and defense. The fold-up club. Slick, stylish and deadly.
Since The Castle Doctrine launches on 29th January for PC, Mac and Linux, Rohrer wants to reward alpha players by running this promotion between now and Tuesday, 28th January at 1am GMT.Here's how it works: However much money you have in the game when the contest ends will be converted into real world dollars. Since Rohrer is putting in a total of up to $3000, the in-game currency-to-dollars ratio will fluctuate. Currently it's at $146 in game equaling $1 in the real world.Additionally, the top eight players will receive two prizes. One of these is a 20x20 inch giclee-printed canvas depicting their favorite in-game painting. The catch is it needs to be a painting in their possession when the bell strikes 1am, so if you think you're going to be a top-ranked player you'd best snag some art you like.More excitingly, the first-place player will receive Jason Rohrer's dog club. Yes, an actual dog club that Rohrer picked up after his pregnant wife was attacked by a canine while simply walking down the street. "Own the club that started it all. A heartwarming souvenir from Las Cruces, New Mexico," Rohrer wrote on the game's official site where he noted that it was never actually used on a dog. "Way safer than a gun! Much harder to commit suicide with. More compact than a golf club, which was actually the anti-dog tool of choice in Cruces."Rohrer further explained that it's 26 inches extended, 10 inches folded up, and weighs over one pound. Unfortunately, it can't be shipped outside the US or in California, New York, Washington DC, or Maryland, where clubs are illegal. The second - fifth place players will receive a Door Devil security device that makes your door that much harder to bash in. It includes a free yard sign, too.

UPDATE: That was quick! 24 hours after its North American launch, Hearthstone is now into open beta in Europe, too. The game is free to download and play for everyone from the European Battle.net. Want to know why you should give it a try? Check out Tom Bramwell'sHearthstone beta review.ORIGINAL STORY: Blizzard's much-anticipated Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft has finally entered open beta in North America, and will arrive in other "main regions" within days.Pull up a chair!
If you live in the United States or Canada and have yet to get a beta key you can now simply download the game client for free from Battle.net."What if you don't play in the North American region? Don't worry," Blizzard wrote. "We plan to go to Open Beta in all our other regions within the next few days, so stay tuned for more information!"Hearthstone is Blizzard's incredibly addictive CCG battler set within the Warcraft universe which - it's no secret - we're already ratherfond of.The game's closed beta test has seen over a million players granted early access to the game - during which time Blizzard has fine-tuned the game's look and mechanics, andtweaked a few of the more egregious cards."Open Beta is still not a final release, and we will be closely monitoring many aspects of the game to ensure a positive play experience for everyone," Blizzard concluded."Please be aware that if smoke starts curling out of our servers due to unexpectedly high demand for Hearthstone, we may have to temporarily disable Open Beta account activations until we're ready to take on more players."

PC manufacturer Alienware has clarified an earlier report that its upcoming Steam Machine cannot be upgraded by users.
Owners will not be locked out of modding, the company has now explained, but making alterations to the hardware will not be "easy"."Enabling customers the opportunity to upgrade components has been a core tenet for Alienware since the company was founded, and that remains true today," Alienware boss Frank Azor explained to Eurogamer in a statement today."The Alienware Steam Machine, announced at CES, is designed to deliver a great gaming experience in the living room and we will enable customers to upgrade components. Considering we've purposefully designed the Alienware Steam Machine to be smaller than the latest generation consoles, upgrading the internal components will not be as easy as compared to other platforms, such as the Alienware X51, but we will not prevent a customer from upgrading."Azor's comments take a different tack than his position earlier this week when he claimed that, for Alienware's Steam Machine, "there will be no customisation options, you can't really update it."Nevertheless, Azor reiterated his earlier comment that users who are interested in heavily modding their hardware would be better off buying one of the company's more conventional models."If a customer is interested in modding and upgrading their rig on a regular basis, then we recommend the Alienware X51," he said. "Enabling easy upgradeability was a critical design requirement for the X51. It includes features such as single screw access to all internal components, and easy-to-remove ODD, HDD, graphics, etc."We feel we have multiple options for customers based on their individual needs. If a gamer wants more freedom to upgrade, we have the X51. If they would prefer a smaller, more console-like system, we will offer the Alienware Steam Machine."A Steam Machine is expected to cost around the same price as a new generation console. The range will be updated with fresh hardware every year.

Valve released its SteamOS beta with a warning: Only touch this if you know what you're doing. While that surely did something to separate true testers from the first wave of eager users, there were a few problems. Even the qualified needed a relatively new machine with UEFI, and a dedicated one at that, given attempts to make the OS a secondary boot option were troublesome at best. However, a fresh beta that folds in efforts by both Valve and the community is now available. On top of fixing the aforementioned issues, thereby welcoming more to get to grips with early SteamOS, other major updates include partition, recovery and DVD install support. This doesn't mean it's ready for general consumption, though, so we'll point the brave to the source link below and swiftly wash our hands of you.

Microsoft started blurring the lines between the modern Windows interface and the classic desktop with Windows 8.1, and there are now signs that it's ready to mix things up a little more. WZor has posted screenshots of a leaked Windows 8.1 update that would let users pin Windows Store apps to the desktop's taskbar, saving them the trouble of visiting the Start screen. There aren't any hints that these apps would run on the desktop. However, it may be easier to return to the traditional Windows environment. SuperSite for Windows' Paul Thurrott hears from sources that the upgrade may also add a desktop-like close button -- you wouldn't have to remember gestures or keyboard shortcuts to quit a Store app. There aren't any clues as to when this OS update would arrive, although we wouldn't be surprised if there's some news by the time Microsoft's Build developer conference kicks off in early April.

Developers, publishers and retailers must make sure free-to-play games are appropriate for their audience, says Square Enix.
Free games has endured a backlash from core fans who accuse them of ripping off gamers and being of poor quality.
“Different business models give us an option to make different games for different gamers,” said Square Enix West CEO Phil Rogers. “Today people might be suspicious of free-to-play – some fear it is a tag for low quality.
“Core gamers don’t like the idea of free-to-play if it’s a way to charge them more than they want for something. That’s not a strategy that will take any business forward.”
The business model has hit the headlines as children rack up huge bills with micro-transactions, and the UK Office of Fair Trading is currently investigating in-app purchases.
“Free-to-play has made games more accessible but also brought challenges as the industry adjusted to these shifts,” added Chillingo COO Ed Rumley. “Developers, publishers, and app store retailers have a part in ensuring free-to-play games are appropriate.”

Gregg Keizer reports at Computerworld that Hewlett-Packard has stuck their finger in Microsoft's eye by launching a new promotion that discounts several consumer PCs by $150 when equipped with Windows 7, saying the four-year-old OS is 'back by popular demand.' 'The reality is that there are a lot of people who still want Windows 7,' says Bob O'Donnel. 'This is a twist, though, and may appeal to those who said, "I do want a new PC, but I thought I couldn't get Windows 7."' The promotion reminded O'Donnell and others of the dark days of Windows Vista, when customers avoided Windows 7's predecessor and instead clamored for the older Windows XP on their new PCs. Then, customers who had heard mostly negative comments about Vista from friends, family and the media, decided they would rather work with the devil they knew rather than the new one they did not. 'It's not a perfect comparison,' says O'Donnell, of equating Windows 8 with Vista, 'but the perception of Windows 8 is negative. I said early on that Windows 8 could clearly be Vista Version 2, and that seems to have happened.' HP has decided that the popularity of Windows 7 is its best chance of encouraging more people to buy new computers in a declining market and is not the first time that HP has spoken out against Microsoft. 'Look at the business model difference between Intel and ARM. Look at the operating systems. In today's world, other than Microsoft there's no one else who charges for an operating system,' said HP executive Sridhar Solur in December, adding that that the next generation of computers could very well not be dominated by Microsoft.

Gender Swap is an experiment by interdisciplinary art collective Be Another Lab, as part of its open source art project, The Machine to be Another – and it uses the Oculus Rift to transport people into bodies of the opposite gender. Two participants strap on the Oculus Rift with first-person cameras mounted on top, and each person receives the visual input from the other person's camera. A woman will look down and see the body of the male participant, and he will see her body.
Both participants then begin moving, slowly and in synchrony, feeling their new bodies and moving with new limbs. They first agree on movements they won't make, but after that, they have to remain attuned to one another's motions to get the full gender-swapping effect. Watch a video of Gender Swap in actionbelow the break – heads up for nudity.
The Machine to be Another has spawned multiple Oculus Rift projects, including some where one person tells a story of hardship, body issues or joy while the other participant is in his or her skin.
"Designed as an interactive performance installation, the 'Machine' offers users the possibility of interacting with a piece of another person's life story by seeing themselves in the body of this person and listening to his/her thoughts inside their mind," Be Another Lab explains. With Gender Swap, Be Another Lab aims to "investigate issues like gender identity, queer theory, feminist technoscience, intimacy and mutual respect."

An interesting mod for the Starbound beta incorporating several elements from BioWare's lauded Mass Effect series has been published online by a group known as Team SMEE. It's called Starbound: Mass Effect Edition and we're certain it's Shepard's favorite beta mod on the Citadel.
The most interesting inclusion is Mass Effect's Biotics, the special abilities unlocked in certain lifeforms through the integration of technology. Both Lift and Slow have been added to Starbound, though players need to track down and learn these techniques before they can employ them.
The mod also converts your personal ship into the Normandy – the original SR-1, to be exact, from the first Mass Effect. On top of the AI-controlled ship, the Asari, Turians and Human Alliance races are all represented here, as well as a slew of appropriate armor and weapon sets pulled directly from BioWare's series. Future updates are planned, and will add the Mako (why?) and Element-0 – a rare element that, when electricity is applied to it, allows for the creation of mass effect fields.
In order to install the mod, users must grab Kawa's Xbawks Mode Character Creator and the Simple Extended Character Creation Mod. Then head over tothe Starbound forums and follow the installation instructions to get Starbound: Mass Effect Edition up and running. Good hunting, Commander.
