Both Starwhal: Just the Tip and Windborne recently landed on Steam's Early Access service yesterday. Windborne, a sandbox adventure game from Counter Stike: GO and Defense Grid 2 developer Hidden Path Entertainment, is 20 percent off ($23.99) on the service until February 24.
Starwhal, the narwhal fencing game set in outer space, earned $24,450 CAD ($22,294 USD) on Kickstarter in late December. The game comes from indie developer Breakfall, who will bring the game to PC, Mac, Linux, Wii U and PS4. Breakfall is hoping to carry Starwhal over to Ouya and Xbox One as well. As for Hidden Path, the developer is also partnering with Harmonix to create the recently-revealed Chroma, a free-to-play rhythmic FPS.

Simogo has confirmed its critically acclaimed iOS puzzle game Year Walk will be released on PC and Mac on March 6 via Steam.
The re-release will feature a number of content additions including new locations, new puzzles, a map, updated artwork, an intergrated encyclopaedia with information the myths and creatures found in the game, a hint system and Steam Achievement Puzzles.
Year Walk was originally released for iOS on February 21, the information now contained in the encyclopaedia was originally found in a companion app. In the game, players are sent on a vision quest through 19th-century Sweden. During their journey they must piece together clues found in the game's environments and solve puzzles.
In our Year Walk review we said "while Year Walk isn't that substantial, and may only last you a couple of hours, it's an incredible showcase for the potential of tablet games and will undoubtedly become influential over the next few years.
"Its conundrums will baffle you, and frustrate at times as you constantly attempt to apply traditional puzzle-game logic to progress - but the self-gratifying pay-off of solving them is immense. Scary, beautiful, atmospheric and incredibly smart - an essential mobile game that shows off the true potential of iPad."

UPDATE 17/02/14: Valve has tightened up its game-tagging after a few customers - somewhat predictably - began using the feature to create their own humourous labels for certain games. To combat this, you can now report labels for being "offensive/abusive", "not appropriate for this product", "not a helpful tag" or a spoiler. In general, tags will now need to be applied by more people before they become visible, while swear words have been properly banned.ORIGINAL STORY 13/02/14: Mischevious Steam users have begun hijacking Steam's new game-tagging feature to label games with humourous tags and some colourful new descriptions.
In news that should come as a surprise to no one, users have decided to exploit Valve's new cataloguing tool to troll others - and air their thoughts on particular titles.Search for "casual" games and you'll be rewarded with Dark Souls and the upcoming Thief.Deadly Premonition's top label is "beard simulator", while indie hit Gone Home's most popular tags are "not a game", "walking simulator" and "bad".DmC Devil May Cry, a frequent target of gamer ire, is "edgy" "#TooEdgy4U" and simply "f*** you".Fez is described with the tag "choke on it" (one of the many memorable phrases from developer Phil Fish's Twitter tantrums) and "diva dev" (which also appears as a popular choice for Peter Molyneux's Godus).Steam's game-tagging FAQ suggests that there is nothing publishers or developers can do about unwanted tags. In answer to the question "What if I don't agree with a tag that has become popular for my game?", the company explained:"Tags can be a good indicator of when there is a mismatch between how you perceive your game, and how your game is perceived by customers. Often this is simply because there is some piece of information regarding the game that customers feel is missing from the store page."

Suda 51's cel-shaded action game Killer is Dead launches on PC on 9th May, publisher Deep Silver has announced.Killer is Dead - Nightmare Edition will be sold in shops as a physical product and as a download for £19.99. It includes a new difficulty mode called Nightmare. Here, enemies can only be defeated using three attacks: Adrenaline Burst, Dodge Burst and Headshots. You can't use the Final Judgement QTE finisher either.Elsewhere, the Smooth Operator Pack for console is included and unlocked after Episode 3. Via the Theater Mode you can rewatch cutscenes and get background information on characters after your first playthrough.Killer is Dead follows the exploits of government-sanctioned assassin Mondo Zappa, a playboy spy with a bionic arm. Oli reviewed the Xbox 360 version last year and he wasn't particularly impressed."At various points, Killer is Dead shoots for the visual surrealism of El Shaddai, the hyperbolic intensity of Asura's Wrath, the oddball melodrama of Deadly Premonition, the extravagant showmanship of Bayonetta," he said. "It misses by a wide margin every time. Those games are punk, but Killer is Dead is just posturing. It's just product."

A new NBA Jam may not be in the cards, but that's okay; a different kind of jam is here. A Space Jam. NBA 2K series modder MGX has released a set of files that transform NBA 2K14 into an adaptation of the 1996 classic film, with the Looney Tunes and Michael Jordan on one side and the Monstars on the other.
Transforming a 2D anthropomorphic animal or space monster into a 3D model is no easy feat. Combine this with the fact that the 3D model versions of the Looney Tunes crew are basically human bodies with animal heads attached and you have a recipe for some serious nightmare fuel uh ... '90s nostalgia.
If you want to get in on this mod or others, check out MGX's Facebook page. Now's your chance. Do your dance. At the Space Jam.

"Security researchers from FireEye have discovered a new IE 10 Zero-Day exploit (CVE-2014-0322) being used in a watering hole attack on the US Veterans of Foreign Wars' website. According to FireEye, attackers compromised the VFW website and added an iframe to the site's HTML code that loads the attacker's page in the background. When the malicious code is loaded in the browser, it runs a Flash object that orchestrates the remainder of the exploit. Dubbed 'Operation SnowMan' by FireEye, the attack targets IE 10 with Adobe Flash. According to a recently-released report from CrowdStrike Strategic Web Compromises (SWC), where attackers infect strategic Websites as part of a watering hole attack to target a specific group of users, were a favorite attack method for groups operating out of Russia and China. FireEye believes the attackers behind the campaign, thought to be operating out of China, are associated with two previously identified campaigns: Operation DeputyDog and Operation Ephemeral Hydra. 'A possible objective in the SnowMan attack is targeting military service members to steal military intelligence,' FireEye said."

In defiance of this weekend's imminent corporate-sponsored romance, Sega has decided to push strategy gamers toward corporate-sponsored violence with the aptly titled "Make War Not Love" promotion.
The rules are simple: During the course of the weekend, Sega will tally all victories earned by players in Total War: Rome 2 and Company of Heroes 2. Whichever game has the more active, successful community will receive free downloadable content. In the case of Total War: Rome 2, players will be awarded the Beasts of War add-on, while those playing Company of Heroes 2will find two new multiplayer Commanders available at no additional charge.
To further sweeten the temptation toward virtual bloodshed, Sega is also discounting both strategy games by 50 percent from now until Monday, February 17 at 10AM PT. Would-be virtual generals can now purchase Total War: Rome 2 for $30 while Company of Heroes 2 can be had for $20.

Godus, Peter Molyneux's Kickstarted world-builder, will not be "free-to-play." It will be free and you will be able to play it, but "free-to-play" doesn't apply to the monetization process Molyneux envisions for Godus, he tells Pocket Gamer.
"There cannot be a term that is less true," he says. "What we need is a new term. And that term is more like 'invest-to- play.' What really are we doing? We are tempting people to invest some of their money into a game." He doesn't break down exactly how Godus' monetization will play out, but he provides one detail: Monetization will enter the game at different points for every player, only when each one is "in the right mindset."
Molyneux wants "to tempt people to think about being proud about investing," he says. "Before we even talk about monetization, we want players to feel likeGodus is a hobby, not just a game."
Molyneux is turned off by the monetization process in EA's Dungeon Keeper, a new, mobile version of the game he originally created – but he's aware that trying to change the free-to-play formula may not be profitable. "Yeah, I'm worried about that, but those risks are worth taking," he says. "We could layer in 'it takes six days to build this house', and maybe we'd make a shitload of money, but that's not my ambition for games."

Polish developer CD Projekt Red's excellent RPG series, The Witcher is free to play on Steam this weekend until 1pm PT on Sunday, February 16. If you'd like to continue playing each past this weekend, both games have been drastically discounted until February 18: The Witcher: Enhanced Edition is currently $2 and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition is $4.
In our review of The Witcher 2 we said it was "polished for the most part and Polish throughout, though its unique origin is reflected more in the grounded fantasy than in the charming, brassy localization. There's no apocalypse in sight, only a well-written web of murdered monarchs, racial tension and freedom fighting - with just a dash of magic."
The third entry in the series, The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, aims to wrap up the story of silver-haired protagonist Geralt, but will not necessarily be the last game in the franchise. The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt is an open-world take on the role-playing series and is currently being planned for release on Xbox One, PS4 and PC later this year.

League of Legends will be getting a new champion and game mode, developer Riot Games has announced. The new game mode, Hexakill, adds another player to each team, turning the game's typical 5v5 match into a 6v6 affair. Hexakill is part of Riot's featured gameplay modes, where players can experience experimental twists on the usual LoL formula. This also means, however, that Hexakill will only be available to play for a limited time, from February 20 to March 2.
Meanwhile, if League of Legends' next champion were in your yearbook, he'd be the kid that was always a little too into the dissection labs in Biology class. Vel'Koz, Eye of The Void, is a tentacled horror that comes to the Fields of Justice from a dimension known as The Void, where it exists as a living font of knowledge and learning. Oh, and he's here to destroy you. So yeah, just likethat kid.

Proving the old adage that "violence always solves everything," - or something like that - Facepunch Studios has implemented a new anti-cheating system, dubbed "CheatPunch," in their first-person survival game Rust. During its initial run over last weekend, a total of 4,621 people were banned. Facepunch, CheatPunch ... is there any problem that can't be solved by punching?
Developer Garry Newman noted on the game's site that he expects cheats will be found that can circumvent the anti-cheating measure, but players should nonetheless be wary: "If you get kicked from the official servers with the message that you've been banned then you have been caught," Newman wrote. "You're a naughty boy. You know what you have done. You won't get unbanned. We know it was your 9 year old cousin. We know your computer got hijacked. We know that the CIA is getting you banned from all your games on Steam so you will join them in the hunt for aliens."
As a famous dynamic duo would say: !

#Dungeon is an upcoming roguelike with a unique twist: rather than procedurally generating its own content, the game is tied to the @HashtagDungeon Twitter account, which tweets out the code that becomes a level. Players can also get in on the creative process by tweeting with the right syntax and including the #HashtagDungeon uh ... hashtag. It's a hashtag of a hashtag's hashtag! Hashtag-ception! BWAHHH.
Developer Kieran Hicks told Pocket Gamer that the game will also feature other social tie-ins, like being able to leave messages for other players to see. Do you want to be honest and helpful or a trolling griefer? Either way will work. There will also be a more standard level editor, as well as a leaderboard for players to rank each other's created levels.
#Dungeon isn't quite ready to go exploring the labyrinth of Twitter just yet, but is expected this summer.

Valve today added the ability for users to add tags to games listed in its Steam library.
Want to hazard a guess as to what happened next?
Well, PC Gamer notes that major plot points in games such as Final Fantasy VII and BioShock Infinite have been ruined while Supreme Ruler carries the tags "the holocaust never happened" and "Jews did 9/11".
Eurogamer, meanwhile, has seen the “casual” tag added to games such as Dark Souls and Thief while Deadly Premonition now carries the tag “beard simulator”. How about leftfield indie hit Gone Home? That has “not a game” and “bad”. Fez and Godus, meanwhile, are now tagged “diva dev”.
Here are a few others MCV has spotted:
DayZ – Walking Simulator
The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct – Garbage, Terrible
Call of Duty: Ghosts – Fish AI, Dog
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – Uplay
South Park: The Stick of Truth – Overpriced
Let’s Sing – High impact sexual violence
Tomb Raider – Female Protagonist
And what is Valve’s response to all of this?
"Tags can be a good indicator of when there is a mismatch between how you perceive your game, and how your game is perceived by customers," it said in the Steam tags FAQ. "Often this is simply because there is some piece of information regarding the game that customers feel is missing from the store page."

Developer opens up late-game stages for players to experience before it goes offline for good
EA’s browser-based MMO Lord of Ultima will shutdown this May, according to the publisher.
No reason for the switch off was offered in an announcement posted on theLord of Ultima forums.
The game’s servers will be pulled on Monday, May 12th, 2014.
Users should be aware that any purchased in-game currency will not be refunded or transferred to other games, and EA has encouraged them to spend any currency before the closure.
But before the switch off, developer EA Phenomic has provided a set of passcodes as a parting gift, giving players the opportunity to experience some of the game’s late stages before it goes offline for good.
The studio is also looking into whether it can progress players at earlier stages in the game to ensure they see the later chapters.
The free-to-play browser game has been playable since April 2010.

Glory to Arstotzka! The bleak Papers, Please nation is now a playable world power in Sid Meier's Civilization 5 thanks to a Steam Workshop mod from Snakeeater337. Arstotzka comes to Sid Meier's Civilization 5 replete with its own unique units, buildings, custom dialogue and music.
Arstotzka has its own custom Border Guard unit, a cheaper version of the Rifleman that gets combat bonuses fighting on native soil. There's also the Border Checkpoint building, which adds protection from spies and produces extra gold each turn. Arstotzka begins the game with its custom "Glory to Arstotzka" trait, which increases worker production at the cost of population happiness and city growth speed. All cities also start with a free worker.
The only downside to this mod is that it requires Brave New World, the latest expansion for Sid Meier's Civilization 5, in order to play. Sid Meier's Civilization 5: The Complete Edition, along with several other games bearing the eponymous developer's name, are currently available in the Humble Sid Meier's Bundle.

Pillars of Eternity can now be expected by winter 2014, Obsidian revealed in aforum update. The developer announced its delay last week following its initial projected launch of spring 2014. It was delayed due to the increasing scope of the game following its generous funding.
The game formerly known as Project Eternity was funded on Kickstarter inOctober 2012, earning a whopping $3.9 million. Junior Producer Rose Gomez's forum post this week noted that the developer will not pursue any more stretch goals for the project, which still accepts pledges on the game's site.
Project lead Josh Sawyer also noted last week that the developer wasn't planning on announcing a specific release window after its delay, saying that because Obsidian isn't a publisher, it didn't "have to." He added that "virtually nothing good comes from us releasing a date before we're very confident in it."

February 12th, 2014, 22:32 Posted By: wraggster
PC GAMING WEEK: Valve has been transforming the PC gaming marketplace.
While the firm hasn’t been making – or at least releasing – third installments in its highly popular game franchises, it has been busy taking over PC retail with its Steam store. In October 2013 it was estimated that 75 per cent of all digital downloads were through the firm’s outlet with over 75m accounts registered on Steam.
Now Valve wants to bring PC gaming to the living room and has approached a number of big hardware companies in the PC gaming sphere to help them achieve this goal. So what has kept PC gaming outside of the living room for this long? There are three key factors to this – all of which Valve has tackled with the Steam Machine, Controller and OS.
STREAMLINING PC GAMING
The primary reason was that the boxes themselves were not suitable for a living room environment – both because they were cumbersome and loud, and as a result of the lack of the ‘plug and play’ instant gratification that some gamers have come to expect with consoles.
“Machines have to fit in and work within a customer’s existing home theatre ecosystem,” explains Wallace Santos – founder and CEO of MainGear, which is building a Steam Machine called Spark.
“They also have to be cool, quiet, and deliver enough power to drive 1080p resolutions at 60fps. Previously, you could choose two of those three things, but now we can deliver on each of them.“
Swedish hardware firm Webhallen’s purchasing manager Anton Nilsson adds: “One of the problems has been the design, price and performance of PCs catering to the living room.”
Another issue has been the software. PC gaming – when compared to consoles – is high maintenance. A game needs to be installed, before the player checks that they have all the software to play it. Stephane Guyard, business unit manager at French hardware company Materiel.net explains: “Dealing with drivers and so on is too complicated for many people.”
John Woodward, Zotac’s North European regional manager agrees: “With Steam OS and Steam Machines, we’re making PC gaming mainstream so anyone can just buy a system, hook it up and start gaming.”
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES
Indeed, attaching a PC to a TV is not as simple as it sounds, says Alienware marketing director Bryan Dezayas. “If you attached a computer to a TV there are some technical challenges like trying to figure out the overscan settings are,” he says.
The Steam OS is designed to eradicate these problems, distilling the experience down to a clear and easy to use system, similar to what we have come to expect from consoles. The design has been derived from the user interfaces used in the likes of Xbox and PlayStation.
“There was a need for a different UI at ten-feet away when you’re sitting on your couch versus three-feet away when you’re sitting at your desk,” says Santos.
The final issue is one of control. Most PC gamers prefer a to use a mouse and keyboard; a set-up which is not suited for a living room console experience – yet PC gamers feel traditional gamepads do not offer the same precision.
CONTROL ISSUES
The Steam controller promises to resolve this issue, aiming to replace the mouse and keyboard that PC games are built around.
“With the new Steam controller, we’re going to see even more precision and control available to gamers that are used to using their keyboard and mouse,” says Maingear’s Santos.
Origin PC CEO Kevin Wasielewski concurs: “The controller provides a console gaming experience and keyboard-mouse functionality.”
The controller replaces the analogue sticks found on a traditional gamepad with two trackpads which provide haptic feedback. In addition, there are face buttons which can be mapped as the player sees fit.
“You're not going to want to type out an essay or anything with the controller but it’s fine if you're looking to chat with a friend,” Dezayas explains.
So the Steam Machine is trying to streamline the PC gaming experience with a plug in and play mentality. But not only that, it does something that even the most recent consoles can’t boast – it allows you to play your old games.
Where the Xbox One and PS4 launched with a handful of titles – and are no backwards compatibility – the Steam Machine allows gamers access to their entire back catalogue.
“If you bought the games under a Windows licence, that will carry over onto the Steam OS,” explains Dezayas.
Not only this – the entire Steam store is there, with thousands of games to choose from.
“Players can access a large variety of games through Steam that includes anything ranging from blockbusters to indie titles,” explains Woodward.
What the Steam Machine offers – on top of the streamlining of the PC gaming experience – is choice. Players cannot only map the controller how they please, but they also have a number of products to choose from. There are 14 companies building Steam Machines now, and this number is only set to grow.
Not only is the choice great for gamers who want a Steam Machine that is suited to them, but also because companies will be competing to be the best.
“Competition is important. It helps. drive innovation and moves the industry forward,” says Wasielewski.
But there is still one huge challenge that this new hardware must overcome – high costs. The cheapest Steam Machine is CyberpowerPC’s device at $499, and this rises to $6,000 for Falcon Northwest’s Tiki.
So it remains to be seen if people will pay these premium prices to play PC games in their living room.

“We’re really going after PC” – that’s the message from Microsoft as it (once again) pledges itself to PC gaming.
“So we love PC,” Microsoft Studios partner creative director Ken Lobb told Rock Paper Shotgun. “It’s obviously a source of huge revenue for Microsoft.
“The reality is that in years past we were the Xbox division. Although many of us love playing on PC, we can only make so many games. We can only do so much. Now we’re one [unified] Microsoft. I don’t see this as pressure. I see it as an opportunity.
“We have more support internally to support PC more. That’s great! My only expectation would be, please let us continue to do that over a five-year period so we can have real impact. That’s how it feels right now. We’re getting very strong support internally. So we’re really going after PC.”
However, when asked whether Microsoft has any major PC games or exclusives on the horizon, Lobb offered a slightly less convincing “I can’t make any announcements but we are very dedicated to that space”.
The assurances follow confirmation this morning that Jason Holtman, who joined Microsoft from Valve just six months ago to front its PC games efforts, has already left the company.
“[I want to make] Windows a great platform for gaming and interactive entertainment,” Holtman stated upon his appointment. “I think there is a lot of opportunity for Microsoft to deliver the games and entertainment customers want and to work with developers to make that happen, so I’m excited to be here.”

Advertisements? In my virgin tab page? It's more likely than you think, new Firefox user. That's because Mozilla will soon launch Directory Tiles, a program that'll ensure you see something other than blank squares the very first time you launch the browser. Instead, it'll populate those spaces with various Mozilla links and, more significantly, sponsored content. Those tiles will be clearly labeled as ads, however, and should go away after you've surfed for a bit. The change will help make Mozilla "more sustainable as a project," according to its blog, which sounds like a coded way of saying it'll generate some cash. That seems reasonable, considering that its competitors have Scrooge McDuck-like vaults of money to throw at their browsers.
