Football Manager 2014 has broken the record for the most consecutive No.1s in the PC charts.
The title has racked up 16 No.1s in a row. If the game can hit 22 No.1s in total (not necessarily consecutively) it will beat the record for the most No.1s of any PC game.
However, Football Manager 14’s sales are slightly down over last year, as it has been cracked and made available to illegally download.
“We are slightly lower this year than we were at this time last year. Some of that has moved to digital, but also we unfortunately got cracked a lot earlier this year than last year, so we’ve lost some sales there,” said Sports Interactive boss Miles Jacobson.
“Last year with Football Manager 2013 we were five months uncracked and ended up the year 22 per cent up. This year we are down compared to that but up versus Football Manager 2012. We were cracked within a week and a half this time, which is a normal cracking time. It’s disappointing, but such is life, we were always going to get cracked, it was just a matter of when.
“We do budget to be cracked, the people we’ve hired is based on how many we normally sell, not how many we sold last year, which was a bit of anomaly.”
Jacobson said that the game continues to get huge support from the High Street, which explains its decent performance in the charts.
“Because of the launch of Xbox One and PS4, there is less shelf space for PC. Shops only have a finite amount of shelf space and they are going to go with the products that are performing well.
“The job that Sega and retail have done working together meant Football Manager has had much better coverage than a lot of other PC titles. Being able to get the support we have had from GAME was great and also the supermarkets, we had FSDUs in more stores than we ever have before. And that was very important in reaching the achievements we managed so far.”

Steam is making a strong case for a mini-staycation this weekend. Festivities kick off today with the Ubisoft Publisher Sale, which lasts until February 24 and offers discounts of up to 75% across just about every Ubisoft game on Steam. Daily deals, additional discounts on select games, will further add to the temptation to spend.
Don't want to spend any cash? Steam thought of that. Both Orion: Dino Horde, a multiplayer shooter that pits man against dinosaur, and Call of Duty: Ghosts, a game that pits Riley the dog against helicopters, are free to play this weekend. Should you wish to buy after you try, Orion is available for $1 and Ghosts is reduced to $30.
Finally, Bohemia Interactive's military sandbox game Arma 3 is 40% off this weekend and available for $36. The game features a variety of single-player and multiplayer operations, and allows active personnel to edit certain gameplay scenarios and employ custom mods.

1954: Alcatraz is a gritty, San Francisco-based point-and-click adventure about crime, doing time and the dark side of mid-century American perfection. It's due out for PC on March 11 for $20 on Steam and GOG, published by adventure game veteran Daedalic Entertainment and developed by Irresponsible Games.
The game includes two playable characters, Joe and Christine, husband and wife – Joe is behind bars and Christine can help him escape, but she doesn't have to. 1954: Alcatraz incorporates beatnik culture, jazz, high-stakes crime and loads of cash, all in a 3D, comic book art style. Player decisions "extensively influence the plot and lead to various endings," Irresponsible promises.
Irresponsible was founded by Gene Mocsy, the designer and artist of Quake 3's engine levels, course artist for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003 and 2005, and the world modeler for James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing, among other feats.

The protagonist in Nothing to Hide is an anxiety-ridden teenage girl, Poppy, whose father is a politician, and they live in a world obsessed with constant, encroaching surveillance. The browser demo begins with a private moment told as wall posts, with dad and daughter's every word and action posted for the world to see. Poppy, apparently, has had enough, and must sneak out of the house and across the city without alerting the government's numerous surveillance tools – she has to stay in sight of cameras and pretend to be casually happy at all times. One second out of range and she's shot down.
Nothing to Hide is for PC, Mac and Linux, and it's open source, meaning its code and art are in the public domain for anyone to mess around with (via Github). Developer Nicky Case says Nothing to Hide's premise and public domain distinction is inspired by our real-world issues with censorship, privacy and ridiculous copyright laws.
"First, it's a protest against our current copyright laws. As the law stands, it's horribly biased towards big companies – few indies can actually afford to go to court over a copyright infringement, while big companies can sue indies for using the word 'candy.'
"Second, I wouldn't have gotten started with games and programming if it weren't for open source. When I was 9, I found open source game files online, learned from them and modified them to make my own games. It gave me the confidence to delve further into programming and create more games of my own. Nothing To Hide is my gift back to the community. All its art and code is open for anyone to learn from and remix, and maybe one day, it will help another aspiring gamedev get their foothold."
Nothing to Hide is one week into a $40,000 independent crowdfunding campaign, and has so far raised $12,373. It uses a staggered payment system, where individual pledges are taken in 25 percent chunks over the course of four milestones: the campaign's success in March, an alpha version estimated to launch in June, a beta version in September and the full game in December. The crowdfunding campaign ends on March 12.

Having been surpassed by the Radeon R9 290X and GTX 780Ti, the Nvidia Titan is staging a big comeback.
The new GTX Titan Black, like its predecessor, packs 6GB of onboard memory running at 7GHz with a peak frequency of 980 MHz and the full GK 110 die complete with 2,880 shaders and 240 texture-units.
All of which represents something along the lines of a 15-20 per cent gaming performance gain over the original Titan, meaning it’s likely to bench higher than the 780Ti
The card is now available for around £770-£790 in the UK.

EA has bundled all three of its Crysis games – and more – in a single digital release.
The Crysis Trilogy contains Crysis, Crysis: Warhead, Crysis 2: Maximum Edition, Crysis 3: Digital Deluxe Edition and Crysis 3: Lost Island Expansion.
It’s available on Origin for £34.99.
It’s probably worth noting that the Crysis games often show up individually in sales for significant discounts, so it’s probably quite possible to pick up all three for less if you’re patient.

WhatsApp is a voice and text instant messaging platform with apps for most every smartphone OS. It provides free service for the first year and costs a dollar annually after that. Why then, did Facebook just buy WhatsApp -- aside from the obvious cachet, keeping it away from Google and free advertising that comes with its omnipresence in Katy Perry's Roar video -- for $19 billion (with a 'b'), when it already has Facebook Messenger? In a word: users. 450 million of them to be precise, and 315 million of those are active on a given day. In fact, WhatsApp's users are so prolific, its messaging volume is roughly equal to that of the entire world's SMS traffic. And, WhatsApp is huge overseas and in emerging markets. According to a report from mobile marketing and research firm Jana, the app is far and away the most used messaging service in India, Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria and South Africa. The Information, which got a more in-depth look at Jana's research, shows that Facebook Messenger usage is far, far lower in those same countries.
Now, is that massive international user base worth $19 billion? It's hard for us to understand how it possibly could be. WhatsApp's founders have pledged to keep the app ad- and gimmick-free, so there aren't any indications that new revenue streams are coming. And, while the acquisition fits in perfectly with Facebook's plan to expand its app offerings, the social network has promised to use the same hands-off approach it did with Instagram -- leveraging its "expertise, resources and scale" to grow the platform, while keeping WhatsApp operationally independent. So, we'll have to wait and see how WhatsApp plans to prove its worth. Maybe some more music video synergy like the kind found after the break?

The Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) has just added a major player to its membership roster: Dell. This marks the first time a big PC maker has come forward to support a wireless charging standard, which A4WP has branded asRezence. As a part of this announcement, A4WP is also introducing a new high-power specification that would be able to charge devices from 20 to 50 watts, such as, of course, Ultrabooks. In fact, an A4WP spokesperson told us that ideally, a laptop charging with Rezence could also be used to give power to a smaller device, say a smartphone, simply by putting it on top of the former. While such products don't exist just yet, the alliance is hopeful for the first few consumer products with Rezence -- perhaps even a laptop or two -- to debut sometime this year.

February 20th, 2014, 23:54 Posted By: wraggster
Blizzard has detailed Clans and Communities, two new social features it is adding to Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls.
Unveiled on Battle.net, the new features will be included in patch 2.0.1 for Diablo 3, and are designed to provide players with "easy and practical tools for finding and communicating with like-minded individuals who share a passion for demon slaying, loot hunting, experience farming, as well as other interests".
Although the features are currently still in development, both are available for testing as part of Patch 2.0.1 PTR and the Reaper of Souls closed beta.
According to its description Clans provide players "who share similar interests, gameplay schedules, or goals the ability to band together and form tight-knit groups".
The feature is intended to be a way for players to communicate with numerous other friends at once, as well as organize play, and keep in touch.
Clans have a member limit of 120 players, are intended to be smaller, and joining is by invitation only. Although a player can send a request to join a clan, they aren't officially a member until they are invited or the request is accepted. You can also only be a member of one clan at a time.
The Clan window can be opened by clicking the "Communities" button located in the lower right-hand corner of the character selection screen, or by using the customizable hotkey (default Shift + O).
Communities, meanwhile, are where players can gather for any reason, ranging from because they play the same class, use the same fan sites, or live in the same area.
"They're all about fostering relationships between like-minded people, with a keen focus on socialization," Blizzard explains.
"Unlike Clans, Communities are intended to be much larger and more casual. They can be public or private, for example, and support a nearly unlimited number of members. In addition, while you can only join a single Clan, you can be a member of multiple different Communities at the same time."
Diablo 3 was first confirmed for PS4 in February 2013. In November 2013, Blizzard revealed Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition for PS4. The game will include Diablo 3 and upcoming expansion pack Reaper of Souls.
Blizzard has yet to officially announce an Xbox One version of the game. A spokesperson has said: "One of our goals is to bring Diablo III to as many players as possible, but we don't have any other platform announcements to share at this time."

The recent release of the Beasts of War downloadable content pack for Total War: Rome 2 has ignited a backlash among series fans, who accuse developer Creative Assembly of deliberately withholding finished content from the retail version of the game in order to release it later as paid DLC.
Players claim that the Camel Cataphract units featured in the Beasts of War pack were originally seen in a Creative Assembly-produced prior to Total War: Rome 2's release. The video additionally outed the existence of the Mercenary Naked Swords unit, which wouldn't be seen until the later release of the game's Caesar in Gaul paid DLC.
Players posted these allegations at Creative Assembly's Facebook page and on the official Total War forums. Further complaints arose when forum mods allegedly moved related threads to the Rants and Raves sub-forum, which is only publicly viewable by registered users.
Speaking to Eurogamer, brand director Rob Bartholomew apologized to fans, explaining that the content originally featured in Creative Assembly's Let's Play videos differs significantly from the paid DLC units.
"At the time of this video's recording, these units were not finished in terms of art, gameplay or design and as a marketing team we should have double-checked the likelihood of them making it into the final game," Bartholomew said. "Obviously we don't want to feature content that won't be in the game intentionally, especially when it would otherwise be pointless, as in this case where there was a huge variety of other great units to show off. That's our basic human error and I apologize for letting that through."
Bartholomew additionally detailed company-wide plans to carefully check pre-release content prior to publication, in order to avoid future conflict. "[The units] weren't working pre-launch in the sense that they were finished, being largely placeholder and subject to change," he said. "However, I completely appreciate that this sounds like a 'get out' on a technicality to a fan feeling aggrieved by this, so again I do apologize for not thoroughly checking enough that all content in that video was absolutely ready for public viewing and understanding. We've put checks in place now that should prevent that in the future."

If you've been itching for a new convertible since CES last month, sales pages for Lenovo's refreshed Yoga line have started popping up online. Best Buy has the 11-inch Bay-Trail-equipped Yoga 2 listed for $519, while you can buy direct from the manufacturer for $799 -- a far cry higher than the previously announced $529. With the yellow-tag store's lower price, however, comes a caveat: the Yoga 2 doesn't have a release date just yet. It's totally up to you if ordering (Lenovo's ship time is "within three weeks") the touchscreen's efficient 2.4GHz Pentium, 4GB of RAM and 500GB hard drive right now is worth the premium though. After all, $280 is still a decent amount of cash.

Microsoft said that a Surface 2 with LTE was coming to AT&T early this year, and it now appears that this cellular-equipped Windows RT tablet is finally close to launch. The company has just received FCC approval for a "portable computing device" that sports the Surface's familiar 10.6-inch display as well as AT&T-native LTE and HSPA data. The filing doesn't hold any surprises, then, but it suggests that there are few obstacles left to releasing the 4G slate in the US. Given past promises, we wouldn't be shocked if it launches within a matter of weeks.

Once the world's second-largest Linux distributor, Red Flag Software has shuttered reportedly due to mismanagement and after owing employees months in unpaid wages. China's state-funded answer to global software giants like Microsoft ... filed for liquidation over the weekend and terminated all employee contracts. Set up in late-1999 amid the dot-com boom, Red Flag was touted as an alternative to Windows ... It thrived in the early days, inking deals with partners such as Oracle and Dell which products were certified to support and shipped with Red Flag Software. The Beijing-based vendor was primarily funded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Software Research, and later received additional funding from state-owned Shanghai NewMargin Venture Capital and the Ministry of Information Industry's VC arm ... 'A lack of brand awareness and sustained investments, coupled with the rise of rivals including Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SuSE Linux Enterprise, led to its downfall,' Eric Peng, Beijing-based research manager with IDC, said ... Peng noted that, during its hey days, Red Flag had enjoyed high adoption among government agencies, state-owned organizations, and schools."

Nvidia has announced the first graphics cards based on its power-efficient Maxwell architecture.
The GeForce GTX 750 and 750 Ti are entry level cards which Nvidia claims will see double performance for half the power usage compared to their predecessors – the 550 series – thanks to the new design.
The 750 Ti exhibits performance closer to that of the GTX 480, while using a quarter of the power, it is said.
“We know that to advance performance, we must advance performance per watt, because every system we design for has a power limit – from supercomputers to PCs to smartphones,” said Scott Herkelman, general manager of the GeForce business unit at Nvidia.
“That's why we architected Maxwell to be the most efficient GPU architecture ever built.”
The cards also support Nvidia’s GameWorks program and the ShadowPlay, G-Sync and GameStream technologies.
“Nvidia understands that delivering a next-gen gaming experience means a lot more than cranking up the clocks, heat and noise just to eke out a few extra frames per second,” added Tony Tamasi, senior vice president of content and technology at Nvidia.
“Our GameWorks technologies, combined with the performance, power efficiency and cool and quiet operation of the GTX 750 Ti and 750, dramatically change the way gamers can play.”
The Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti and GTX 750 GPUs are available now from a selection of Nvidia’s hardware partners, including Asus, EVGA, Gainward, KFA2, Gigabyte, Inno3D, MSI, Palit, PNY, Point Of View and Zotac.
Prices are expected to start at around £90 for the 1GB GTX 750, and £114.99 for the 2GB GTX 750 Ti.
French vendor PNY is among the first of the partners to reveal its iterations of the cards, offering the 750 and 750 Ti with 1 and 2GB of GDDR5 memory and a shared clock speed of up to 1085MHz for £119.99 and £144.99 respectively.

The massively-multiplayer online game World of Warcraft is to add an in-game purchase that levels players to level 90 for $60 (£36).
The popular game has recently seen player numbers fall as its 10th anniversary approaches this November, and Blizzard has attempted to re-interest gamers by making it easier to gain experience points and progress up the levelling ladder.
Despite the changes, reaching level 90 can still take tens of hours of gameplay, so cash-rich and time-poor players may be tempted by the chance to gain more powerful abilities without the previously necessary time investment.

Long-revered shoot-em-up Ikaruga is available now on Windows PC for the first time, after Treasure brought it to Steam this week. The newly tweaked PC version is based on the 2008 Xbox Live Arcade port, so Xbox 360 controller support and screen rotating between vertical and horizontal play are included. The fee for entry to Treasure's bullet hell is $10 in North America, and £7/9 euros across the ocean.
The arcade classic, which debuted back in 2001, is centered around its polarity-shifting mechanic. Players use light and dark weapons to take down ships of the opposite color, but they can also absorb same-colored bullets to power homing lasers. Ikaruga is also famed for its difficulty, and as if to drive that home, the Steam version features a new Double Play mode that tasks you with beating the two-player game with just one controller.

Browser-based RPG Therian Saga is available now in English. Developed by Quebec-based studio Virtys, the game has been building an audience of 50,000 French-speaking players for about a year, but is ready to explore the English lands for vous.
"The focus of our open beta will be to gather as much final feedback from English-speaking players as we can to ensure a smooth and enjoyable launch, which is scheduled for the near future," said Therian Saga Lead Designer François Desrosiers.
We've slowly seen an interesting transition in the browser space with games like last year's Card Hunter. You can sign up now for the game atTherianSaga.com.

The tens of thousands of Twitch members who are participating in a crowd-sourced playthrough of Pokemon Red are also unknowingly taking part in an ongoing game of Tetris. Twitch Plays Pokemon Plays Tetris captures input requests from the Twitch Plays Pokemon chat and repurposes them for the strangest, lowest-scoring game of Tetris you've likely seen.
Curated by Xkeeper, Twitch Plays Pokemon Plays Tetris features a modified version of Nintendo's 8-bit Tetris that gives players greater control over tetrimino placement...in theory. The mod adds a feature that sends falling pieces toward the top of the screen every time an "up" input is registered, adding to the chaos.
It's a very deliberately paced game of Tetris, in other words. Scores are low and completed lines are rare, but possible. Other Twitch Plays Pokemon-inspired bits of madness that have cropped up over the last week include Twitch PlaysQWOP and RNG Plays Pokemon, which uses a random number generator to decide input.
