Look! Over there! It's Star Wars: The Old Republic being still alive and shouting about it.Shouting about two new expansions coming this year, in fact. "Expect to see two digital expansions in 2014 just like you did last year, with one similar to Galactic Starfighter in scope and one more closely resembling Rise of the Hutt Cartel," wrote senior producer Bruce Maclean on the game's website.Just... a... flesh wound.
That's in addition to new PVP seasons, Flashpoints (dungeons), Operations (raids), new gear, performance improvements and class changes.Maclean also said SWTOR would move to a once-every-three-weeks routine for minor bug fixing updates, and to a nine-week routine for more meaty updates.Closer at hand - Luke Skywalker's hand - there's the Galactic Starfighter expansion launch for free-to-play players tomorrow, 4th February. This is the spaceship dogfighting expansion. On 14th March there's a double XP weekend, then on 8th April there's a content patch taking the game to version 2.7. On 10th June there will be an even more significant content patch in version 2.8, but not all the details are ready to be shared. More specific bits and bobs are listed in Maclean's letter.Star Wars: The Old Republic struggled as a subscription MMO and then struggled initially as a free-to-play MMO.

New indie outfit Stellar Jockeys has announced its upcoming isometric vehicle-based action roguelike Matador.Based on its debut trailer, Matador strongly evokes 80s sci-fi with its synthy music, neon colour palette and retro font. The idea is you have to choose a vehicle, pilot, and weapon layout then face off against four other factions across nine maps.Like any roguelike, Matador will feature permadeath. "Progressions comes through unlocking new options and equipment for the next run," the developer stated on its official site. "There is no XP. There are no saves. When you die, start over and try, try again." Unlike most roguelikes, Matador's maps won't be randomly generated, but the enemy spawns and factions within them will be.Matador is currently slated for a PC, Mac and Linux release this summer and Stellar Jockeys just put up a page for it on Steam Greenlight. See its John Carpenter-esque vibe in action in Matador's debut trailer below.

Duke Nukem will return in a top-down action RPG for PC and PlayStation called Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction, according to a teaser message decoded by fans.
A coded message from alloutofgum.com - which now only displays an image of Duke's favorite chewing gum and a timer counting down to February 25 - was decrypted and posted on the Duke4.net forum. The message speaks of an alien world called Kyrron which was twisted and ruined by a mysterious force, compelling its native race to set out and conquer other planets.
"The king makes his next generation debut in Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction, a top-down action role-playing game for PC and PlayStation," reads the game's blurb.
"Duke Nukem kicks ass across planets in an Unreal Engine-powered galactic adventure to save the president from an apocalyptic alien threat. All new enemies, a never before seen arsenal of devastating weaponry, and series-first mechanics, including experience points and tech trees, will let Duke rip 'em a new one in a way he never has before."
Mass Destruction appears to be the commercial name for Project Ascender, which in December was discovered to be in development at Interceptor Entertainment.
Series creator and 3D Realms co-founder Scott Miller has joined the studio, which was also responsible for the Rise of the Triad remake and porting several Duke Nukem games to iPhone.
Duke Nukem Forever released in 2011 after 14 years of development. Though a top-down action RPG is new territory for Duke Nukem, the shades-wearing anti-hero got his start with sidescrolling action games.

If you caught our recent coverage of the huge Star Swarm demo, you'll know that AMD's Mantle programming tool has already proven itself capable of radically transforming a real-time strategy game. But the console-inspired API has been claimed to deliver performance benefits in FPS games too, starting with Battlefield 4, and the first independent evidence of this is now starting to trickle out.AnandTech and HotHardware have used almost-final Mantle drivers to achieve frame-rate gains of at least 7-10 percent in BF4, rising to 30 percent with some configurations, by doing away with the need for Microsoft's relatively inefficient DirectX drivers.
In general, it looks like systems with weaker CPUs stand to benefit the most, because Mantle uses the graphics processor in such a way as to reduce CPU bottlenecks. We'll get a better idea of the size of the improvement once Mantle is released to the public and tested on a wider variety of systems, including laptops and desktops with low-end or integrated AMD GPUs, but nevertheless, these early results bode well for those who are trying to eke better frame rates out of older, cheaper or smaller gaming rigs.

Rumblings of Google Now on the desktop first started surfacing back in December of 2012, but it wasn't until a couple of weeks ago that it actually broke cover. If you were a user of the Canary build of the Chrome browser, you could enable the card alerts by ticking an option buried deep within the recesses of chrome://flags. This week though, Google will bring the desktop version of its virtual assistant to the betas of Chrome on Windows and OS X, as well as Chrome OS. You won't need to dig through any advanced options; you'll just need to sign in with the same account you use on your handset -- so long as you have Now enabled on your phone. Unfortunately, it sounds like Linux users are left out in the cold for now. Presumably that has something to do with how Now ties into existingnotification systems on those other platforms (we've asked Google to clarify). With Now hitting the beta channel, enabled by default, it's only a matter of time before Mountain View brings the feature to the masses. But if you're anything like us, you're already using the beta build and are maniacally hitting the update button hoping to be among the first customers it rolls out to.

Not much change on Steam's top selling products chart this week, with DayZ and Rust yet again out ahead of the pack.
The two Early Access offerings have entered their third consecutive month finishing in the top two spots, and neither have shown any sign of slowing down.
Starbound – which typically finishes right behind in third – slipped a notch, due to a major discount to the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Collection.
Highly anticipated indie Octodad: Dadliest Catch made its debut in the seventh spot. The list in full:
- DayZ
- Rust
- Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning - Collection
- Starbound
- Insurgency
- Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist
- Octodad: Dadliest Catch
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Broken Age
- Strike Vector

Flashing lights, bleeps and bloops, and the miasma of teenagers with nothing better to do. For many of us, this is the essence of the 1980s that indie gameArcadecraft captures, and if you're PC owner who likes the sound of an arcade creation and management sim - think Theme Hospital but with dingy arcades - developer Firebase has good news for you.
After shifting 65,000 copies on Xbox Live Indie Games, Arcadecraft now has a PC port that's "almost done" and will be available to Windows 7 users soon. It's now on the Humble Store for pre-order, and Firebase has a Steam Greenlight page up too. The PC port features the same arcade-building play of the XBLIG original, but with some visual touch-ups like higher resolution textures and new character models and animations.

The original PC version of Minecraft has sold 14 million worldwide, a figure that takes the game's total sales past the 35 million mark, at the very least. That 35 million figure is based on numberspreviously given by Mojang for other platforms, including the 10 mill for the mobile Pocket Edition - that was back in May 2013. In truth, the total sales are probably a million or two more.
Bearing in mind Mojang still has lucrative PS4 and Xbox One versions in the works, we can only imagine creator Markus 'Notch' Persson has his own Scrooge McDuck-style money bin towering over the hills of deepest Sweden, with a giant, golden beard emblazoned on the front. If he doesn't, he is truly wasting his life.

Thanks to the onslaught of cost-effective game bundles courtesy of the folks at Indie Royale, Humble Bundle and Bundle Stars, players have plenty of options to pass the time at a low price. Blink Bundle is now entering that space by appeasing game developers interested in adding their games to discounted collections: CEO Jim Yildirim told Joystiq via email that Blink offers the "highest dev cut out of any of the major bundles."
Blink Bundle is currently offering a "Something for Everyone Bundle," which includes Steam games Gnomoria, Sideway New York, Archon Classic and Light of Altair in addition to an as-yet-unknown bonus game for a minimum payment of $1.99. Those that pay $4.99 or more for the bundle also receive Blockland,Eldritch, Lilly Looking Through, Mutant Mudds Deluxe, Influx and Hero of the Kingdom, as well as another unnamed bonus game. The two bonus games will "unlock" on Thursday, at which point both price tiers will increase by $1. The bundle will be available until Thursday, February 13.

Years ago ago those of us who used any *nix desktop ('every morning when you wake up, the house is a little different') were seen as willing to embrace change and spend hours tinkering and configuring until we got new desktop versions to work the way we wanted, while there was an opposite perception of desktop users over in the Mac world ('it just works') and the Windows world ('it's a familiar interface'). However, a recent article in Datamation concludes that 'for better or worse, [Linux desktop users] know what they want — a classic desktop — and the figures consistently show that is what they are choosing in far greater numbers than GNOME, KDE, or any other single graphical interface.' Has the profile of the Linux desktop user changed to a more pragmatic one? Or is it just the psychology of user inertia at work, when one considers the revolt against changes in the KDE, GNOME, UNITY and Windows 8 interfaces in recent times?"

Guacamelee! Gold Edition is Steam's daily deal today. Until 10am PT on Sunday, February 2, you can grab Drinkbox Studios' charming Lucha Libre-inspired platformer for only $3.74. A bundle including the game's delightful soundtrack is available for $5.
Guacamelee! Gold Edition includes the base game along with some additional costumes and The Devil's Playground DLC, which opens up an additional area called El Inferno – the Devil's Domain. Guacamelee! Gold Edition also supportsSteam Trading Cards, Steam Workshop for custom skins and Steam achievements.
In our review, based on the original PS3 and PS Vita version, we calledGuacamelee a "luchadorable" good time. "The clumsy evolution of combat aside, I'd heartily recommend Guacamelee – once for its devilish difficulty, again for its luchadorable charm, and one last time for its even-handed treatment of the lowly video game chicken."

Quakecon, North America's LAN party extraordinaire, is taking place a couple of weeks earlier than usual in 2014. Organizers announced the Bring-Your-Own-Computer event will be held from July 17 to July 20 at the regular venue of the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas.
It'll be the first Quakecon since John Carmack left id Software, the company he co-founded, to work full-time at Oculus VR. That doesn't mean Carmack's traditional keynote address is a write-off, as the veteran programmer tweetedhe's offered to give the talk - it's now up to organizers to accept his offer.
Carmack or no, because the event's happening a wee bit earlier there's no time to dawdle over booking a hotel room - a $160 per night special rate is available now. Admission to the event itself remains free.

Rust, the MMO-meets-survival game from Facepunch Studios, sold 750,000 copies in a month and a half since entering Steam early access. The news is courtesy of an update from creator Garry Newman, who described the sales mark as "an amount we never even imagined selling over the game's lifetime." The PC/Mac/Linux game's success has been consistent since its launch, as it reached 250,000 players less than two weeks ago.
Newman is the developer of the ever-popular Garry's Mod, a Source engine-based physics sandbox that saw 3.5 million copies sold as of November 2013. As for how Rust compares to Newman's mod, the developer says it "already made us 2/3rds the amount of money that Garry's Mod has made in 8 years."Garry's Mod is priced at $9.99 on Steam, whereas the alpha version of Rust can be purchased for $19.99 on Steam Early Access.
Newman described Rust's success as "both a blessing and a curse," citing a "sensory overload" on the behalf of the developer from its popularity. "We see all these amazing things happening, voices from all directions, ideas, bugs, cheaters.. and we're scrambling to catch up with everything," he wrote.

Beyond the Sideline Football is a management simulation game like the ever-popular Football Manager series, due out in 2015 for PC, Mac and Linux. Unlike Football Manager, the game is centered on a different sport: American football. Coming from Out of the Park Developments, the creators of the excellent Out of the Park Baseball management series as well as Title Bout Championship Boxing 2013, the game will include all 32 NFL teams and their current roster of players.
Like other management sims, the game has players managing their team's depth chart, simulate matches for decades and call every play in individual games. Additionally, players can bring their favorite teams to fortune (or run them into the ground) by negotiating contracts, participating in the annual player draft and make trades to better their franchise's future. OOTP Developments is boasting "nearly 50 tracked stats" for the game's virtual athletes as well as "complete histories" and automatically-generated news and stories to build the game's sporty universe.
Beyond the Sideline has another connection to Football Manager, as former Sports Interactive developer Francis Cole is the lead developer on the project.

Microsoft already gave Windows 8 users the option to boot their machines directly to the desktop, but a future update could make the classic interface standard. According to known leaker WZor, the latest Windows 8.1 test build skips over Microsoft's tiled interface by default. Of course, those aren't the only changes --WZor also posted screenshots showing that the OS' power options (sleep, shut down and restart) have been moved to the Start Screen, and modern UI apps now feature a "minimize" option, lending credibility to rumors that a future update would allow them to be run from the desktop. So that's what they meant bybusiness friendly.

AMD has a new set of drivers coming in a couple of days that are poised to resolve a number of longstanding issues and enable a handful of new features as well, most notably support for Mantle. AMD's new Catalyst 14.1 beta driver is going to be the first publicly available driver from AMD that will support Mantle, AMD's "close to the metal" API that will let developers wring additional performance from GCN-based GPUs. However, the new drivers will also add support for the HSA-related features introduced with the recently released Kaveri APU, and will reportedly fix the frame pacing issues associated with Radeon HD 7000 series CrossFire configurations. A patch for Battlefield 4 is due to arrive soon as well and AMD is claiming performance gains in excess of 40 percent in CPU limited scenarios but smaller gains in GPU-limited conditions, with average gains of 11 — 13 percent over all."First time accepted submitter Spottywot adds some details about the Battlefield 4 improvements, writing that Johan Andersson, one of the Technical Directors in the Frostbite team, says that the best performance gains are observed when a game is bottlenecked by the CPU, "which can be quite common even on high-end machines.""With an AMD A10-7850K 'Kaveri' APU Mantle provides a 14 per cent improvement, on a system with an AMD FX-8350 and Radeon 7970 Mantle provides a 25 per cent boost, while on an Intel Core i7-3970x Extreme system with 2x AMD Radeon R9 290x cards a huge 58 per cent performance increase was observed."
