As soon as you pre-purchase (buy in advance) upcoming World of Warcraft expansion pack Warlords of Draenor, you'll immediately be able to boost one your characters to level 90.The original plan was to wait until the expansion came out."That's a little different from the plan we laid out at BlizzCon," explained Blizzard, "but based on the feedback, it's obvious that many of you would like the chance to get acquainted with a new class before heading into the expansion."This will also give more players the opportunity to experience the current end-game content and the events leading up to Garrosh's exodus to Draenor. Maybe you'll get your Legendary cloak from Wrathion and level 90-100 Heirloom weapon in the process."Yeah, maybe.Warlords of Draenor will raise the WOW character level cap to 100.On the topic of insta-levelling to 90, Blizzard will, in "the near future", be testing "a feature that gives you the option to purchase a character upgrade [to 90] directly". You'll start seeing pieces of the process on the public test realm soon apparently.Warlords of Draenor pre-purchases will be available digitally "soon". There will be a standard edition and Digital Deluxe edition, and if you buy the latter, you'll also get immediate access to the included pet and mount, "allowing you to bring a little bit of Draenor past into Azeroth present".Closed beta testing for the new expansion is close at hand. If you want in, make sure you're opted in to Warcraft betas and have your hardware specs up to date in your Beta Profile.Warlords of Draenor takes you back through time to the old continent of Draenor, where Orcs and Draenei originate from, in order to fix the future you come from. The expansion also includes housing of a kind, dubbed garrisons, as well as new character models. No release date has been announced but presumably the expansion will arrive this autumn.

"In the first week of 2014, $400k was paid out to content creators", noted Valve during the second Steam Day (summarised on Steamdb) - those content creators being people like you or me who belong to the Team Fortress 2 or Dota 2 communities. The beautiful art of DeviantArtist ramida-r.
These people make their own items to sell to the rest of the community and, judging by the numbers, sell them they do.Valve believes many current micro-transaction systems create unhappy customers - what, really? - who end up training themselves not to spend money. Valve's solution is to let users make value for each other, and reward players who make the most.More than 90 per cent of the content in Team Fortress 2 is created by the community, Valve revealed. More than 1 million TF2 player accounts have sent gifts, and nearly 2 million have received them.A whopping 17 milion accounts own items created by other people, and there's a colossal pool of some 500 million items out there. Pha-ew.Make players happy and you will make more money, insisted Valve, evidently overlooking Half-Life 3 and how happy that would make us all. Micro-transactions don't have to cost the happiness of your users.

The company announced the news this week during its Steam Dev Days conference in Seattle, Washington.

Microsoft today announced it will continue to provide updates to its security products for Windows XP users through July 14, 2015. Previously, the company said it would halt all updates on the end of support date for Windows XP: April 8, 2014. For consumers, this means Microsoft Security Essentials will continue to get updates after support ends for Windows XP. For enterprise customers, the same goes for System Center Endpoint Protection, Forefront Client Security, Forefront Endpoint Protection, and Windows Intune running on Windows XP.

Microsoft remotely deleted old versions of Tor anonymizing software from Windows machines to prevent them from being exploited by Sefnit, a botnet that spread through the Tor network. It's unclear how many machines were affected, but the total number of computers on the Tor network ballooned from 1 million to 5.5 million as Sefnit spread. 'By October, the Tor network had dropped two million users thanks to Sefnit clients that had been axed. No one, not even the Tor developers themselves, knew how Microsoft had gone on a silent offensive against such a big opponent and won a decisive battle,' the Daily Dot reported. In a blog post, Microsoft claimed it views Tor as a 'good application,'but leaving it installed presented a severe threat to the infected machines.

Patch 4.1 for League of Legends has arrived, bringing with it a multitude of alterations and refinements. There are tons of changes to champions, items, maps and abilities, so get your cries of "RIP, <insert your favorite champion here> is nerfed!" and "<insert your most-hated champion here> is OP!" ready. The patch also adds a static roster of champions for new players, which means newcomers are no longer chained to the free-to-play rotation of playable champions. This new roster isn't live yet, though - it's set to be turned on at a later date.
According to Chris Tom, handler of Player Relations & Communications, the new roster will help get newbies accustomed to the ins and outs of League. "Our goal is to improve the way players learn to play League of Legends when they're first starting out," he writes in the patch notes. "These champions were picked because of how easy they can be learned and how enjoyable most new players find them."

Though Valve Software missed its initial 2013 estimate, the company has nowbegun beta testing its in-home game streaming service.
As its name suggests, this initiative will allow users to stream and play any game from one PC to another as long as both are on the same network. Valve hopes that this will speed adoption of Steam Machines by alleviating the hassle of moving your current favorite games from your PC to the new device. If nothing else, being able to stream games from an extant computer to another gadget will save users the hassle of having to re-download hundreds of gigabytes of video game data.
Invites to the beta test have been issued at random to members of the Steam Homestream community. If you have yet to receive an invitation, don't fret: Valve will be adding more participants to the test as time rolls on. For more details on Steam in-home streaming, have a look at Valve's official FAQ.

Jenito Games, Daniel Hall's one-man indie studio, has a new PC game calledSuper Mega Bob in the works and it's a deceptively intense experience. Super Mega Bob is a difficult 2D shooter harkening back to the 16-bit era of old, with simple shooting mechanics married to a modern upgrade system for player progression.
A beta version of the game is available for download.
Super Mega Bob is quite the quintessential indie story. Hall is handling everything himself, from programming to art to sound and anything else you could imagine is a part of making a game in your basement. Hall, who hails from Fort Oglethorpe, GA, has been toiling away for five years to make this game happen and describes Super Mega Bob as "truly a reflection of my dreams, my love for games, and my early childhood exposure to gaming classics."

Valve wants to offer digital music, video, and television episodes via SteamOSprior to the launch of its Steam Machines hardware, general business developer Anna Sweet revealed during the company's Steam Dev Days event in Seattle this week.
Steam Dev Days attendees Becky Taylor and Jose Ilitzky relayed SteamOS's upcoming expansion via Twitter, though Valve has yet to issue an official statement. Developers continue to weigh in on the announcement via the#steamdevdays hashtag.
Valve's proposed digital entertainment expansion would put SteamOS in direct competition with Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network, which currently offer music, movies, and TV episodes on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PS4 platforms. Valve previously announced plans to tackle the console gaming market with Steam Machines, a lineup of SteamOS-powered computers specifically suited for living room gameplay.

Valve plans to introduce movies, TV and music to its living room-focused SteamOS, the firm has said today.
Valve's Anna Sweet made the revelation at Valve's Steam Dev Days event in Seattle on Wednesday, according to several Twitter posts from attendees.
As it stands, the open-beta version of SteamOS - the operating system that will power Valve's TV-focused Steam Machine console/PC hybrids - simply allows users to play Steam games, falling drastically short of the multimedia capabilities of Sony and Microsoft's consoles.
But, according to Sweet, Valve aims to have movies, TV and music integrated into the system before its final public launch.
A beta version of Valve's Linux-based SteamOS was made available to download for free in December 2013.
Steam Machines represent Valve's first major drive in the hardware market, and a move it hopes will establish its Steam PC gaming platform in the living room.
The first retail units will ship at an unspecified date in 2014 with multiple configurations offered.
Valve also announced on Wednesday that Steam has grown to 75 million registered users, up 15 percent in the three months since its October announcement of 65 million users.

HP's Chromebook 11 is one of the better Chrome OS devices on the market, power adapter woes notwithstanding, but it hasn't had a cellular version to please those who want always-on data. That won't be a problem after today, as Best Buy has quietly started selling a model with Verizon LTE. The 4G link boosts the ARM-powered laptop's price to $379 without otherwise changing the specs; if you attach it to a shared Verizon data plan, you'll also get a $50 rebate. The new computer probably won't change your mind if you didn't like the Chromebook 11 in the first place. Still, it's one of the cheapest LTE laptops on the market -- that's no doubt appealing to at least a few budget-conscious road warriors.

It turns out that Valve's hardware beta was an actual beta: the Steam Controller is dropping its touchscreen and adding some physical buttons before going up for sale via Steam and at retail later this year. It's unclear exactly where the buttons will be, but we're seeing reports that they'll approximate a d-pad and the standard A/B/X/Y configuration.
According to attendees tweeting from Valve's Steam Dev Days conference, a "ghosting" mode is offered in replacement (which presumably shows a visualization on-screen of however your buttons are being mapped -- that's our best guess as information comes in). Valve's also got an API to help devs integrate the Steam Controller into their games, which apparently supports up to 16 players at once.
We've yet to see any images of the new controller -- what you see above is a beta controller handed out at the dev conference -- but we'll have more specific news as we hear more. For a look at the previously planned touchscreen, we've got a mockup in our gallery right here.

The free-to-play Doctor Who MMO is closing down. Yes, there was a free-to-play Doctor Who MMO.
Doctor Who: Worlds in Time was announced in February 2011 and finally launched in March 2012. However, a message on the game’s website now confirms that it will cease operating on February 28th.
Microtransactions have already been suspended.
The news continues a bad run of form for Gallifrey’s most famous Time Lord.
After what appeared to be a successful first run for the BBC’s free PC Doctor Who Adventure Games, and even the commissioning of a second series, the project was later scrapped – as was a sequel to PC and PlayStation title The Eternity Clock.
In better news, the Doctor appears to be enjoying more success on iOS and Android thanks to the recent launch of Doctor Who Legacy.

Steam has 75 million active users, Valve announced at the Steam Dev Days conference. The previous Steam user count, shared in October, was 65 million. Thanks, Steam users, for making the math on this one easy: 10 million users in three months. Wowza. Check out the regional breakdown below.
Steam Dev Days is a chance for developers and publishers – only, with no press around to cramp their style – to learn more about Steam Machines and developing for Valve platforms. Each attendee has already received a Steam Controller and is going home with a Gigabyte Steam Machine "for development and not Ebay," Tinybuild Games tweets. Check out the Gigabyte box here.
Valve founder Gabe Newell took the stage at Steam Dev Days and proposed the potential eradication of Greenlight, Steam's community-voted indie game approval system.
"Our goal is to make Greenlight go away," Newell said, transcribed by Hot Blooded Games CFO Dave Oshry. "Not because it's not useful, but because we're evolving."
The talks from Steam Dev Days should be available online later on, though the free Steam Machines are only for those actually at the conference. We know –that's nonsense.

A new update being planned for the ongoing Starbound beta will wipe all player data, forcing everyone to start from scratch once again. The update addresses a save file issue with the game, and the developer assures this is the last time it has to wipe player progress.
Those looking for some added difficulty should find it in a new permadeath mode, also coming in this update. Developer Chucklefish will add more weapons, decorative hats and up the rate at which players encounter NPCs on the game's various worlds.
Starbound is a 2D sci-fi exploration game full of randomized worlds. Players traverse the galaxy in their own personalized ships, beaming down onto worlds to explore and scavenge for crafting supplies. Earlier this month, Chucklefish announced over one million players had signed on for the beta, which is open to anyone who pre-orders the game.

Bundle Stars is offering up a tempting smorgasbord of Steam games for only $5. The Brutal Bundle is headlined by dictator-em-up Tropico 4, along with Curve Studios' stealthy puzzle platformer, Stealth Bastard Deluxe. The two complement each other quite well – one teaches you how to rule a nation, and other helps you sneak out of the country as soon as the people revolt.
The Brutal Bundle also has a few vehicular combat games. Iron Sky: Invasionputs you in the cockpit of a starfighter, while Steel Storm: Complete Edition lets you maneuver an advanced hovertank in an alternate future. Port Royale 3offers boat-based combat in the Caribbean, circa 17th century, and Naval Warfare tackles modern naval skirmishes.
King's Bounty: Legions True Tactician Ultimate Pack and Earth 2150 Trilogyrepresent the strategy section of The Brutal Bundle, while Day One: Garry's Incident focuses on a man trying to survive in the Amazon jungle. Rounding out the list is Dungeonbowl, a twist on the fantasy football game Blood Bowl.
The Brutal Bundle ends in little over 29 days, so walk – don't run! – to the website if you're curious.

A decade ago, AMD brought us the first dual-core x86 processor. Then, starting in 2008, the company came out with tri-core and quad-core designs in quick succession, leading up to octa-core chips in 2011's FX range as well as in the latest AMD-powered game consoles. Today, we're looking at a fresh leap forward, albeit one that will take a bit of explaining: a desktop and laptop chip called Kaveri, which brings together up to four CPU cores and eight GPU cores and gives them unheard-of levels of computing independence, such that AMD feels justified in describing them collectively as a dozen "compute cores."
Marketing nonsense? Not necessarily. AMD is at least being transparent in its thinking, and besides, if you've been following our coverage of the company's HSAproject, and of GPU compute in general, then you'll know that there's some genuine technology underpinning the idea of GPU cores being used for more than just 3D rendering. Nevertheless, even if you don't go for the whole 12-core thing, AMD still makes some down-to-earth promises about Kaveri's price and performance -- for example, that it matches up to Intel chips that cost a lot more (the top Kaveri desktop variant costs just $173, compared to $242 for a Haswell Core i5), and that it can play the latest games at 30fps without the need for a discrete graphics card. These are claims that can -- and will -- be put to the test.
