Football Manager 2014 has held off Thief from the top of the boxed PC game charts.
The football management title has remained in the top spot during its 18th week in the chart, with Square Enix’s stealth action game debuting in second place.
The PC-exclusive Football Manager 2014 and its mobile variant Football Manager Handheld 2014 are currently on sale as part of a one-day Pancake Day promotion, and recently saw the release of the latest winter transfer update.
“Football Manager 2014 has finally battered the opposition by marking a record-breaking 18th consecutive week at the top of the UK PC games chart,” a pun-happy statement from developer Sports Interactive said.
“This eggs-traordinary feat continues a long tradition of chart dominance for games developed by Sports Interactive.”
Last week’s second place PC game, the first-person military shooter Battlefield 4 fell to third, with Rome: Total War II and the Legendary Edition of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim falling one place each to fourth and fifth respectively.
Presumably spurred on by the release of its Reaper of Souls expansion pack, gothic RPG Diablo III shot up into sixth place from 11th the week before.
Diablo’s fellow Blizzard title StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty remains the longest-lived title in the top 20, now at its 121st week in the chart. It gained a place, rising to 15th position.
Despite Thief’s failure to claim the PC top spot, it did manage to see success across all platforms, stealing the number one crown in the All Formats chart.
Kids’ film spin-off The Lego Movie Videogame and sports title Fifa 14 followed in second and third place.

Development on End of Nations has officially stopped. Trion Worlds first halted the game in late 2013, recently telling Video Gamer it is "currently focusing the company's energy and creativity on Rift, Defiance, Trove, ArcheAge, and some new projects that we will be revealing soon."
The game's website no longer resolves to any landing page and the last posts on its Facebook and Twitter pages were from August 2013, right around the time Trion Worlds shuttered its San Diego studio. At the time, the publisher opted to move development of End of Nations, along with that of Defiance andArcheAge, to its Redwood City studio. It also named Scott Hartsman CEO of the company, who left his former role as COO of Trion Worlds in January 2013.

To celebrate today's release of its second episode, Steam's Midweek Madness Sale has reduced the price of The Walking Dead season two by 33 percent.
As of this morning, those visiting Steam can pick up season two of The Walking Dead for $16.74. That price grants access to the two episodes that have already launched and the three slated for release later this year. While we can't speak to the quality of those sections we've yet to play, the first two episodes have been quite good. Episode one earned 4.5 of 5 stars in our review, while episode two picked up 4 of 5 stars.
Being a Steam sale, this promotion only applies to the PC and Mac incarnations of The Walking Dead season two. Those hoping to get in on the deal should hurry: That $16.74 price point is only available until March 7 at 10AM PT.

Riot Games' League of Legends is built on a relatively simple premise: you and four other players each pick a character, assign yourselves a role (tank, support, etc) and use your unique abilities to destroy the enemy team and their base. But what happens when you and someone else on the team want the same role during a match? Human sacrifice, cats and dogs living together; , that's what! Thankfully, Riot is rolling out the Team Builder beta starting tomorrow, so we can put down the pitchforks - for awhile, anyway.
Team Builder works by having players select their champion, role and position for a match, and then attempts to match them up with other players using Team Builder until a balanced team can be formed. Theoretically, this will lead to less fighting about who plays who, goes where and does what. The Team Builder queue will be separate from others, and will only be available for unranked 5v5 matches.
Team Builder won't be sticking around forever. League players will have 48 hours from the time the beta goes live in their region until Riot closes off access. The beta will be a staggered launch, starting March 3 on the RU and EUNE servers. To see when your region is live and learn more about Team Builder, you can check out the official FAQ page.

The PC beta for Warhammer 40k: Storm of Vengeance launched on Steam this week for $9.99, translating the Warhammer universe into a game of defending lanes. Aside from serving as a chance to play the game early, purchasing theStorm of Vengeance beta works as an early purchase of the final build once it's finished.
Storm of Vengeance involves a disagreement between Grand Master Belial and Ork Warlord Ghazghkull Tharka on the planet Piscina IV. Players can guide either character's army through its respective group of 50 missions, progressing through a skill tree as they earn victories.
As with any beta, the listing reminds us that this isn't representative of the final Storm of Vengeance build, and developer Eutechnyx is welcomingfeedback on the game's forum. If you'd rather play this on the go, iOS and Android versions are planned for the first quarter of this year, which the Steam listing notes will be compatible with cross-platform multiplayer against PC players.

Signal Studios is on standby for a full Steam release of Toy Soldiers Completeafter launching it on Early Access over the weekend. The bundle includes tower defense/shooter mash-up Toy Soldiers, follow-up Toy Soldiers: Cold War, and the two games' downloadable expansions. The Early Access price is $10 in North America, and £7/10 euros in Europe.
While both games launched on Xbox Live Arcade, you can already find the little plastic paratroopers on PC; Toy Soldiers is available as a Steam standalone, while Toy Soldiers: Cold War is on Windows 8. So it's a bit curious to see Signal taking the Early Access route, but the Ascend: Hand of Kul studio says it's looking for players to "help us find bugs, give feedback and most of all – help us shape the game before its full release!"

Security specialist Bitdefender has told PCR that there should never be another operating system like Windows XP.
Discussing the upcoming end of life for the long-lived Microsoft OS, chief security strategist Catalin Cosoi said: “We will continue supporting XP machines until at least 2016.”
He went on to say that despite prophets of doom predicting an epidemic of malware attacks, it will be possible to keep the operating system protected following the end of support by using software that continues to support updates for XP.
“In conjunction with proper security policies and practices and provided the rest of the computing environment is sane and secure, yes [it will be possible to keep XP machines safe].”
“From a security point of view we believe that the risks are by now well understood. XP is a very well characterised system and there is vast know-how available on how to keep it safe, for all its inherent flaws.”
However, Cosoi added: “The sooner companies migrate, the better.”
Asked whether Windows 7 was likely to recreate the longevity and ubiquity of Windows XP, as many observers have suggested, Cosoi said that he’d rather no operating system copy XP’s success, for the sake of reducing security risks.
“Windows 7 adoption has been growing much slower than XP adoption was back in the day,” he explained.
“From a security perspective, we'd prefer that there never be a ‘new XP’ – the dangers of monoculture are well known and have been amply demonstrated in the heyday of XP.”
“In fact, we sometimes wish [Microsoft] had been a bit more aggressive with the end of life date – there are some e-threats which are still relevant solely because there is a significant population of XP systems.”

Alcatel has revealed the prototype of the Hero – a budget laptop powered by a smartphone.
Referred to as a ‘smartbook’, the Hero comes in two parts – a laptop-like keyboard and display and a six-inch phablet.
The Hero phablet, powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core Mediatek MT6589 processor, provides the processing power to the Hero smartbook.
The phone is connected by touching it on the notebook’s keyboard, which pairs the two. The processing power and data of the phone is then transferred to the keyboard and display – video over Wi-Fi and keyboard/trackpad input over Bluetooth.
The Hero phablet is available to purchase now, while the Hero smartbook is currently a concept in development at the firm – but is expected to be much cheaper than a Google Chromebook once released, the firm added.

Valve has unveiled the partners it is working with for the Steam Machines, and PCR has rounded up the details so far.
The lower end of the range is occupied by CyberPowerPC and iBuyPower’s offerings.
CyberPowerPC has two boxes – ‘A’ and ‘I’ – for AMD and Intel configurations respectively.
At $499, the ‘A’ model is the cheaper, powered by an AMD 3.9GHz dual-core processor and 2GB Radeon R9 270 graphics card.
$200 more, the ‘I’ runs on a 3.5GHz Intel Core i3 CPU paired with a 2GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 card. Both models include 8GB of DDR3 RAM and a 500GB hard drive.
iBuyPower’s Machine favours AMD, with a quad-core Athlon X4 740 processor and Radeon R7 260X graphics. 4GB of RAM and 500GB of hard drive capacity round out the $499 box, which is wrapped with an app-controllable LED light.
Sitting slightly higher up the price range is Zotac’s Machine.
Details are yet to be confirmed, but Zotac has confirmed that the $599 box will feature an Intel Core processor with Nvidia GeForce GTX graphics.
The Gigabyte Brix Pro, with its i7 4770R, Intel Iris Pro 5200 graphics, 8GB of RAM and 1TB hard drive also looks likely to enter the range at around this price.
Just beyond the $1,000 mark sits the next wave of partner systems.
Materiel.net’s box rings in at $1,098 for an i5 4440, MSI GTX 760 OC graphics card and 8GB of RAM. Storage is provided by a 1TB SSHD with 8GB of flash memory.
Next up is Alternate’s $1,339 system containing an i5 4570, Gigabyte GTX 760, 16GB of RAM and 1TB SSHD.
Webhallen also favours Intel and Nvidia, offering an i7 4771 and GTX 780 alongside 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSHD for $1,499.
The first UK Steam Machine, Scan’s NC10, contains an i3 4000M, GTX 765M, 8GB of RAM and 500GB of storage.
It’s also the first to have a UK price revealed – starting at £699.
Currently unpriced, the Next SPA system, powered by an i5 CPU, GTX 760 graphics, 8GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, may join the mid-range Machines.
At the top end of the roster is the CPU-customisable Falcon Northwest system, offering 8 to 16GB of RAM with up to 6TB of storage and an Nvidia Titan for between $1,799 and $6,000.
Digital Storm’s Bolt II-based system is also aimed at those seeking top-end performance, with an i7 4770K, GTX 780 Ti, 16GB of RAM, 1TB HDD and 120GB SDD for $2,584.
Likely to come in at a similar price is the Origin PC Chronos, with an i7 4770K and twin 6GB Nvidia Titans.
Alienware is also set to release a Steam Machine (pictured), but is yet to reveal more details.
NEED TO KNOW
The Steam Machines made by the partners officially licensed by Valve will include the company’s Steam Controller as standard.
All of the systems will also run on Valve’s SteamOS operating system, which is based on Linux and has been optimised for gameplay.
Several of the computers also dual-boot into Windows, on which the entire Steam library of games can be accessed.

If you have a Chrome OS system, you know it can be a hassle to sign out just so that someone else can borrow the computer for a few minutes. That may not be an annoyance for much longer, though. A new developer version of Chrome OS includes experimental code for running multiple profiles at once; after others sign in, you can switch between users at the drop of a hat. You can even send windows to different profiles. There's no certainty that Google will bring multi-account support to a polished Chrome OS release, but those willing to take some risks can switch to the Dev channel to try the feature today.

Microsoft really wants Windows XP holdouts to upgrade before official support ends in a month's time, and it's providing some last-minute incentives to get those people moving forward. The company will soon let XP users download a free copy of Laplink's PCmover Express to migrate their data to newer Windows releases. The crew in Redmond isn't just hoping that users will find the tool and update on their own, though. It plans to send an end-of-support notification to most XP users on March 8th; if they didn't already know about the deadline, they likely will by this weekend. Microsoft can't force its customers to use modern software, but these latest steps will at least make its intentions clear.

Bandai Namco is expected to release the PC edition of Dark Souls 2 by the end of April, according to promotional materials.
From Software's anticipated action RPG will ship on PC and Steam on April 25, a marketing image published on Siliconera suggests.
The publisher has confirmed a Dark Souls 2 release date of March 11 in North America and March 14 in Europe on PS3 and Xbox 360.
A spokesperson for publisher Bandai Namco did not confirm the rumoured PC release date when speaking to Siliconera, stating that the marketing image was intended for the Southeast Asia regions. Nevertheless, the materials suggest late April is Bandai Namco 's general release target.
April 25 also falls on a Friday, which is typically the day when games are released in the UK.
Late in February, Bandai Namco revealed the Dark Souls 2 Collector's Edition. At the time, it said a PC edition will be released "shortly" after the console one.
A Bandai Namco spokesperson was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.

If the Oscar party you've got planned for tomorrow night is less about drinks and dresses and more about the undead and brain-bashing, boy does Sega have a deal for you: meet the Silver Screen Lexicon Pack DLC for Typing of the Dead: Overkill, where the game's words and phrases have been replaced by some of cinema's most quotable quotes.
Unlike a box of chocolates, you know just what you're gonna get here: film references up the wazoo for $2.99. You'll need to type in phrases like "life finds a way" and "Houston, we have a problem" in order to take out those damn dirty zombies. If you can't keep up, not only will we have a failure to communicate, but *whisper voice* you'll see dead people; lots more than you would otherwise.
So carpe diem; seize the day, zombie-hunter-slash-typing enthusiasts. Go out and win one for the Gipper.

Gaming peripheral maker Razer has added a new feature to its GameBooster software suite that allows users to store their PC game saves in the cloud, according to IGN.
While still in beta, Razer's Save Game Manager supports "over 2,000 existing PC titles," while also allowing players to manually add other games to the cloud storage queue. Currently, saves are stored to a user's Dropbox folder, though Razer hopes to expand the service to include other cloud-based storage solutions in the near future. In addition, Save Game Manager can upload PC settings to the cloud for easy access in the future.
Those interested in putting Save Game Manager through its paces candownload the GameBooster software suite, free of charge, from Razer's website. Keep in mind, this is beta software, so if something goes wrong and you lose a save, you'll have no recourse. As with all important data, multiple backups are your only safe bet.

Carmageddon: Reincarnation will arrive on Steam's Early Access service on March 27, Stainless Games announced. The UK developer also offered a pre-alpha trailer for the vehicular destruction game, which focuses on damage tech for the reboot.
Carmageddon: Reincarnation is the result of a successful Kickstarter project in June 2012 during which the indie developer earned $625,143. The developer earned a total of $3.5 million in funding for the game as of March 2013 thanks to the investment of Bullfrog co-founder Les Edgar, bringing the game to Xbox One and PS4 in addition to PC, Mac and Linux.
Since the developer first unveiled its plans for an alpha-level launch on Steam in September, it stressed that all of its Kickstarter and PayPal backers who pledged at least $15 for a copy of the game will also get every piece of Stainless Games' DLC "for the rest of time."
