Warner Bros. has announced a reboot of the cult classic arcade role-playing dungeon crawler Gauntlet. The new Gauntlet is described as a "completely modernised" action RPG, and is due out this summer for PC via Steam, with support for SteamOS and the Steam Machines. It comes as part of the launch of WB Games Vault, a direct-to-digital portfolio that will deliver paid games based on Warner Bros. and Midway brands, plus original IP."With Gauntlet we combined the arcade style of the original game with an entirely new look and feature set that includes emergent, local and online four-player gameplay," said Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment digital games boss David Haddad."Gauntlet will be the first title in the WB Games Vault portfolio, which will provide us with an opportunity to access emerging talent within the game development community and match unique skills and experience with our extensive library of properties."Gauntlet is developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, maker of Magicka and Helldiver. As with the original, you select from four fantasy characters: the Wizard, Warrior, Valkyrie or Elf.Arrowhead chief Johan Pilestedt said: "To us at Arrowhead, Gauntlet is one of the most defining games from our childhoods, and it's amazing to be able to work with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment on a brand new version."Gauntlet is one of the original and best known video game properties and we are looking forward to creating a fresh, yet true to the original, take on a multiplayer masterpiece."

Ghost Recon Online has been renamed Ghost Recon Phantoms. The free-to-play online tactical shooter moves out of open beta to release worldwide on Steam and PC on 10th April, Ubisoft said."The end of open beta is a new start to the game," producer Corey Facteau said."The difference between where the game started and the game today is so considerable that we felt we should mark it with a fresh identity."Feedback from our five million players throughout beta enabled us to continuously increase the content of the game and to improve what makes the game unique, the blending of intense shooters with the teamwork and tactical depth of MOBAs."Ghost Recon Phantoms brings a narrative layer to the game based around The Phantoms, ex-Ghosts and current adversaries who left The Ghosts to pursue personal agendas. We've also added new gameplay elements to expand the depth of the game and give new experiences to seasoned veterans. Of course, no accounts will be wiped, and our current players will not have to start over."Ghost Recon Phantoms features a new art direction, Ubisoft said, new character and device design for all three classes as well as a "complete reworking" of lighting and level design on the majority of maps.Matchmaking will now take into account both the skills and gear of players to create a fair gaming experience, Ubisoft added.Screenshots showing off how the visuals have changed are below.

You see that image above? That's the new Steam Controller, headed to SteamOS. Sound familiar? That's because this is the second iteration of the Steam Controllerfirst unveiled last year. Astute readers might be thinking, "Haven't I seen this somewhere before?" That's also a strong possibility, as we got a first glimpse of itback at Steam Dev Days earlier this year (albeit via shaky cellphone camera). Today, however, Valve's deigned us worthy to see it in high-res glory. Heck, the folks at Valve even juxtaposed the new one (on the left) against the original version of the controller (seen on the right). Sad about that missing touchpad? We are too, but perhaps those fancy new buttons will help make up for it, eh? Head below for a much larger version.

We hope you weren't eagerly anticipating a finished release of Firefox for Windows 8 -- despite releasing a beta of the browser just last month, Mozilla has cancelled the project. There just aren't enough testers using the new interface to justify shipping a completed version, the developer says. It's concerned that the missing feedback could lead to a buggy release that requires too much repair work. Pre-release code will still be available, and Mozilla isn't ruling out a change of heart in the future. For now, though, Windows 8 users will have to switch to a rival like Chrome if they want a touch-friendly alternative to Internet Explorer.

Drivers that allow current Xbox One controllers to work on PC WILL be released, Microsoft has insisted.
OXM reports that rumours were doing the rounds suggesting a PC-specific version of the hardware was in the works that would ship with a dongle. PC owners, it alleged, would need to purchase this SKU and be blocked from using existing joypads.
“This is 100 per cent wrong,” Microsoft’s director of product planning Albert Penello said on NeoGaf. “When the drivers become available, they will work with the existing controllers.
“There is no plan to do a new, separate controller that only works on Windows. It will be the same as it is on Xbox 360 – the Xbox One controller you have today will work. That's not to say that we may not ship also PC SKU of the Xbox One controller, much like we do on Xbox 360.”
Not all of the details have been ironed out, however.
“The controller (in wired mode) will work as-is,” he added. “How wireless will/could work is TBD. There are some options we are looking at.
“[There are] no more updates on the timeframe beyond what's been publicly stated – the plan is this year. When the update comes out and we have more details, I can explain the holdup.”

Though IE, Chrome and Safari were all attacked and all were exploited, no single web browser was exploited at this year's Pwn2own hacking challenge as Mozilla Firefox. A fully patched version of Firefox was exploited four different times by attackers, each revealing new zero-day vulnerabilities in the open-source web browser. When asked why Mozilla was attacked so much this year, Sid Stamm, senior engineering manager of security and privacy said, 'Pwn2Own offers very large financial incentives to researchers to expose vulnerabilities, and that may have contributed in part to the researchers' decision to wait until now to share their work and help protect Firefox users.' The Pwn2own event paid researchers $50,000 for each Firefox vulnerability. Mozilla now pays researcher only $3,000 per vulnerability."

Having drained the blood from the Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360,Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate will next dine on Steam, at an unknown date later in March.
Originally released on Nintendo's handheld as a bridge between Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and the recently-released Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2,Mirror of Fate sees Trevor Belmont traversing the familiar gothic climes of Dracula's domain. Gameplay is a cross between the action-focused Lords of Shadow games and those Castlevania entries (mostly notably Castlevania: Symphony of the Night) that focus on 2D exploration.
The PC incarnation of Mirror of Fate is based on the more recent PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games, which means that it comes equipped with high-definition graphics, online leaderboards and a Boss Rush mode. New to the PC game are Steam Achievements, though they should be essentially identical to the Achievements and Trophies found in the Xbox 360 and PS3 games, respectively.
Unfortunately lacking from Konami's announcement is a price point forCastlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate HD, and any specific release date. The best the publisher is willing to offer is a vague "later this month" release window which only leaves about two weeks for Dracula to crawl from his tomb once again.

Pre-orders are now available for Blackwell Epiphany, the finale of Wadjet Eye Games' adventure-driven Blackwell series due out on April 24. Aside from a DRM-free download of Blackwell Epiphany, pre-ordering will grant buyers a redeemable Steam key, access to exclusive videos featuring the game's voice actors and series creator Dave Gilbert, an invitation to a private livestreaming of Epiphany's launch party, and the game's soundtrack.
If you're a bit behind or haven't started the Blackwell series in the first place, the story follows Rosa Blackwell as she copes with the recent death of her aunt, which grants her an odd form of inheritance. After her aunt's death, a ghostly figure straight out of the '30s, Joey Mallone, appears to her and explains that he's been accompanying members of the Blackwell family for a few generations now. With the passing of Rosa's aunt, she's next in line to inherit a ghostly sidekick.
Naturally, the duo go on to solve mysteries together, using Rosa's abilities as a medium to communicate with the dead to piece together narratives. Their search for answers and efforts to help the deceased find peace have extended through four previous games, but Epiphany's press release teases that their work bears a "price," which Rosa and Joey will presumably discover in the finale.
Blackwell's preceding episodes can be bought from GOG's Blackwell Bundle for $14.99, or purchased directly from Wadjet Eye Games for $4.99-$9.99 apiece. The developer also plans to port the Blackwell series over to iOS, but the adventure has yet to appear on the App Store.

After a long journey of more than one year, which included even a successfully ended Kickstarter campaign, the VLC app for Windows 8 is officially here. VLC for Windows 8 is currently in beta, and it lacks some important features, such as the ability to open music files or support for Windows RT devices. On the good side, VLC for Windows 8 supports the same codecs as the VLC application for desktop, from MPEG-1 to H.265, through WMV3 and VC-1; it also supports multiple-audio tracks selection, embedded subtitles, background audio playback, Live Tiles, removable storage and DLNA servers."

Mozilla today announced it is abandoning the Metro version of its Firefox browser, before the first release for Windows 8 even sees the light of day. Firefox Vice President Johnathan Nightingale ordered the company's engineering leads and release managers to halt development earlier this week, saying that shipping a 1.0 version "would be a mistake." Mozilla says it simply does not have the resources nor the scale of its competitors, and it has to pick its battles. The Metro platform (which has since been renamed to Modern UI, but many prefer the older name) simply doesn't help the organization achieve its mission as well as other platforms Firefox is available for: Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android."

Plug-in-free web tech means the potential reach of games could surpass that of any app store, says the web firm
A new title from indie outfit Nom Nom Games is among the first to use a custom web technology that enables cross-platform 3D play without concessions to performance or visuals.
Playverse allows games to be run directly from the player’s web browser, offering “native-like” performance – instead of being streamed from the cloud.
This has enabled multiplayer shooter Monster Madness Online to be played across PC, Mac, Android, Linux and iOS via the matchmaking and content delivery service.
“The hardware landscape is becoming ever more fragmented,” Nom Nom director Jeremy Steiglitz told Develop. “For an online game developer seeking to reach as many players as possible, it can make sense to try to bridge the gap between devices with cross-platform play.”
Mozilla’s asm.js web technology was the key catalyst in making Playverse’s cross-platform multiplayer abilities a reality.
Vladimir Vukicevic, engineering director at Mozilla and inventor of WebGL told Develop: “With the advent of asm.js and the Emscripten technologies, developers can quickly port their native C/C++ games to run directly in a web browser. The potential reach of these games surpasses that of any other technology or app store.”
Nom Nom contacted the web development firm after seeing work Mozilla and Epic Games did to bring Unreal Engine 3 to the web – yesterday the duo gave a sneak peak at UE4 on running in a browser.
“They saw an opportunity to bring their game to web browser users, without plug-ins or any installation steps, but still maintaining a high quality feel,” said Vukicevic.
So far, streaming technologies such as Gaikai and OnLive have been leading the way in enabling consumers to access all their gaming content from specific connected devices, many of which have to contact specific applications or plug-ins. Steiglitz believes offering native-like 3D graphics and sound through the web makes it far easier to “achieve a critical mass of online players on over eight-plus platforms”.
Playverse is already being used in the studio’s own titles Monster Madness Online and Dungeon Defenders 2 from its parent company Trendy Entertainment. The studio will demoing the technology at GDC next week.
Steiglitz added: “Online cross-platform functionality opens a whole can of daunting technical worms: synchronized content delivery, matchmaking, server hosting, social interactivity, etc.
“I think platform-abstract game development is the wave of the future, and we at Trendy and Nom Nom believe that our technology can enable developers to connect and leverage a far larger combined player-base than they could reach on any one device alone.”

Valve offered up a clearer side-by-side image of its updated Steam Controllertoday. The second iteration of the SteamOS gamepad was revealed in January, and peeled away the center touchscreen in favor of more traditional face buttons. The new buttons consist of a directional pad and standard A, B, X and Y buttons, the latter formerly located around the touchscreen. Valve left the large circular trackpads on the device, but also added a Steam icon button in the center with start and select-like buttons on either side with what appear to be stop and play icons.
The Steam Controller was announced alongside SteamOS and Steam Machines in September 2013, and was followed up by a hardware beta program that already excluded the controller's touchscreen. We spent some time with Valve's beta hardware in early January and found the experience lacking on the previous version of the controller with Hotline Miami and Portal in particular. Head past the break for a closer look at the updated controller.

Sapphire is reportedly planning to release two limited edition versions of the AMD Radeon R9 290X graphics card, featuring 8GB of memory.
The graphics card vendor already has a range of 'Toxic' and 'VaporX' iterations of other AMD R9 models, but the special editions of AMD’s most powerful card would double the current VRAM memory of the 290X.
Eric Joel posted images of a blue-accented card on KitGuru, stating that the card will be a ‘VaporX’ edition.
Another 'Toxic' version of the 8GB 290X, without VaporX, is also set for a reveal, he added.
Prices and release dates for either card are yet to be revealed.

French indie team Cubical Drift announced the upcoming release of Planets³, an open-world, voxel-based role-playing game due to launch next year for Windows PC platforms.
Planets³ finds players stranded on a cube-shaped alien world, where they'll craft items and construct vehicles in order to explore their surroundings. Players can team up with native Job Masters, who teach essential skills like cooking, blacksmithing, and engineering. The end goal is to build a starship and explore the surrounding universe, where further secrets lie.
Cubical Drift seeks funding for the project via Kickstarter, where it has currently earned over $50,000 toward its initial goal of $250,000. Planets³ is also up for vote at Steam Greenlight.
