A group of former developers for Ultima Online has created a game company called Citadel Studios, and they're working on a new MMORPG called Shards Online. '[CEO Derek] Brinkmann described the game as a player-run MMO, which means at the highest level they can run their own servers and change the settings of that world, altering how long nighttime lasts or how quickly players can gain skills. On the next level down, server administrators can take the form of god characters, who can spawn monsters in the world, create items and launch live events. And in the level below that, players can modify the gameplay code. ... The game is set in a multiverse, where players can travel through different worlds. While all the worlds are unified by the same rule-set, Cotten told Polygon that they are each themed differently, and these themes will offer players a different experience. There's a world inspired by high fantasy. There's a world that is coming out of a steampunk industrial revolution. There's a world that consists of a coliseum in which players can fight each other in player-versus-player battles.'"

Humanity's morbid fascination with the zombie apocalypse continues unabated as DayZ creator Dean Hall has revealed that the standalone, retail release of his open-world hit has racked up over 1.7 million sales.
Hall revealed this figure earlier today at the ongoing EGX Rezzed event in Birmingham, UK. He also noted that the original version of DayZ, a modification for Bohemia Interactive's military simulation ArmA 2, has been downloaded over two million times to date.
But Hall didn't attend the event simply to crow about his game's success. According to Eurogamer, Hall also revealed that DayZ's next update will arrive before the end of April, and that it will include a crossbow, fireplaces that players can use to prepare food and a prototype system which should allow loot to respawn within DayZ's expansive yet sparse world.

Hoping to draw more virtual commanders to the online battlefields of World War 2 strategy hit Company of Heroes 2, publisher Sega has announced a standalone multiplayer version of the game that will make it easier than ever to join the fight.
Slated for release in June, Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies will bear a $20 price tag. For that entry fee, players will be granted access to two new factions, the German Oberkommando West and US forces. As its name suggests, The Western Front Armies takes place on the heavily-contested Western Front, and offers players a new campaign, progression system and "other unique content."
Best of all, this $20 standalone release will grant players access to theCompany of Heroes 2 multiplayer servers. Though The Western Front Armieslacks the singleplayer content found in its predecessor, it does include a full complement of multiplayer options as well as all 31 official multiplayer maps released for Company of Heroes 2 to date.

Just when you thought it was safe to use a crosswalk, Carmageddon: Reincarnation appears on Steam Early Access to crush your pedestrian dreams like so many actual pedestrians.
A latter-day sequel to the controversial, 1997 PC hit, Carmageddon: Reincarnation once again sees players engaged in rolling combat with other, likewise heavily-armed vehicles while also running down hapless civilians for kicks. The Early Access release is a pre-alpha build of the game, but it boasts three stages, six vehicles and a "plethora of mad power-ups" to aid players in their bloody quest. Developer Stainless Games hopes to expand Carmageddon: Reincarnation with periodic updates that will add new vehicles, maps, and gameplay modes.
The price tag attached to the Early Access release of Carmageddon: Reincarnation reads $30, but as with all Early Access games, those who purchase the gory racer will gain access to the final version of the game once it debuts at no additional charge.

Those of you buying physical games through Origin will soon have to embrace digital distribution or scope out another store - Origin will cease its offering of disc-based games on April 4, when it transitions to serving solely as a digital license storefront for PC and Mac.
If you're still set on buying discs, remember that this announcement is just for Origin, not EA's general distribution efforts. You'll presumably still be able to pick up physical copies of Dragon Age: Inquisition and the next Mass Effect through other stores.

March 29th, 2014, 00:33 Posted By: wraggster
The impending Windows XP switch-off on April 8th is having a positive effect on European desktop PC sales.
Growth in channel unit sales during January 2014 had a record 13.6 per cent year-on-year growth, despite the continued decline overall in the PC business, according to analyst Context.
However, overall PC sales in January fell three per cent year-on-year. Notebook PC unit sales fell 4.3 per cent while consumer PC unit sales overall slumped by 10.9 per cent year-on-year.
The data measures actual sales to users as opposed to shipments into the market from vendors.
In the business segment, desktop unit sales grew 17.3 per cent, driving a consolidated growth in business-targeted PCs of 6.6 per cent.
"However, XP replacement projects are not the only factor driving this growth. Relatively weak demand in some European countries a year ago and regular refreshes are also helping to paint an improving picture for desktop sales," said Context in a statement.
Looking at business-focused Windows OS versions, Windows 7/8 remains the most popular with a unit share in January of 55.8 per cent, while Windows 8 holds a 12.6 per cent share.
“The end of XP support across the huge installed base of XP across businesses will present a major security challenge for these companies”, said Alex Mesguich, VP of enterprise research at Context.
‘’Overall, the end of XP support could have a triple-whammy effect. For Microsoft, the unknown consequences could be opening a can of worms for them. Businesses are annoyed at the forced transition, and security vendors will be having to process and patch an increased flow of vulnerability issues.”
Here's a breakdown by country:
January 2014 year-on-year growth of overall desktops in distribution
UK: 30 per cent
Germany: 20 per cent
France: 17.4 per cent
Italy: -2 per cent
Spain: 6.3 per cent
January 2014 year-on-year growth of business-targeted desktops in distribution
UK: 38.5 per cent
Germany: 29 per cent
France: 11.3 per cent
Italy: -1.4 per cent
Spain: -2 per cent

Electronic Arts is giving away Origin games for free as an extension of goodwill to the PC games community.
The initiative, called On The House, is now offering a copy of Dead Space free of charge until Thursday May 8. EA claims there's no catch, and suggests it will offer other games for free in the future.
Dead Space, developed by Visceral Games and released in 2008, was critically acclaimed upon release and made to sixteenth place in the CVGGames of the Generation debate.
Electronic Arts has been subjected to routine criticism from the PC gamer community for years, and the hostility towards the company has intensified during launch calamities for PC games such as Battlefield 4 and SimCity.
On the Origin web page, EA says it is offering free titles because "we're gamers too".

Microsoft has unveiled its Kinect for Windows v2 sensor, which looks almost identical to the Kinect sensor for Xbox One.
The only changes to the sensor's design are aesthetic in nature - the illuminated Xbox symbol has been replaced with a simple power indicator, and there's a new "Kinect" label on top.Two other components will also be included - the power brick and the "hub", a box which splits out a USB 3.0 cable to connect Kinect for Windows with your PC.There's still no release date for the technology, which will replace the PC version of the original sensor that shipped for the Xbox 360."As this first look at the Kinect for Windows v2 hardware indicates, we getting closer and closer to launch," Microsoft wrote in an new blog post. "So stay tuned for more updates on the next generation of Kinect for Windows."

DayZ creator Dean Hall has revealed that the game has now shifted more than 2m copies of the game's original Arma 2 mod and sold 1.7m copies of the standalone package.Speaking live on stage at EGX Rezzed 2014, Hall also revealed that Bohemia had purchased a new development team - Cauldron Studios, now Bohemia Interactive Slovakia - whose 25 staff members would be dedicated to the game.Hall spent the remainder of his presentation laying out a detailed roadmap of the game's updates for 2014. It was the first time that Hall had mentioned the roadmap anywhere, he said, not even to the game's team or to the boss of Bohemia Interactive. The next update will come by the end of April, Hall promised, perhaps in the next two weeks if development continued smoothly. Included will be a prototype method for allowing loot to respawn within a server, as well as fireplaces for cooking (upgradable to ovens for baking bread) and a crossbow.Loot will respawn in a particular quadrant of the world after it is empty for a certain amount of time, Hall said, so that players who join can still find items. Doors will also reset. On the server side, the update will allow for a speedier delivery of future updates and improved messaging between the game's server and your PC. It'll also remove penalties for joining the same server.Options for server admins to accelerate time (up to 64x faster than real-time) and throwable items - anything that can be held - will also be added.Looking a little further ahead, the game will be expanded with a new pistol, ragdoll physics and improved AI pathfinding, Hall continued. Physics will come into play when your character falls, or if you drag unconscious or dead bodies. An upgrade to 64-bit is also in the works, which will allow the game's server to use more memory, something that will future proof the game and help with the new physics integration and new zombie AI, and vehicle physics.Prototype animals for hunting - six new types in total - are also on the way, as are advanced weather effects such as snow and fog and new container items such as fridges, ovens and cupboards.Looking ahead to Q3 2014, Hall said that AK47s and yet more animals were coming. Hostile and neutral creatures and companion animals such as dogs and horses are on the cards, while new zombie behaviour will be designed to better develop the existing aggro system.Physics-based barricading based on current buildings' doors and windows and persistent to your server is also on the list of upcoming features, as too are small vehicles such as bicycles, motorbikes, quadbikes and small cars. These will be customisable and configurable, with the possibility of adding weapons.

Desert Strike seems done and dusted - at least for now. Rights holder EA doesn't look like it's got a fancy pants big budget helicopter combat game in the works, so we're left to reminisce over the 90s Strike series. One developer, though, made up of former Sony and Criterion staff, have decided to do something about that. The answer is Killstorm.Killstorm is described a PC, Mac and touch screen devices action game in which you pilot an attack helicopter. For developer Nice Touch Games (Crazy Horses), Killstorm is "our love letter to the classic action games of the 16-bit era". They don't mention Desert Strike - probably out of fear of getting a nasty letter from EA's lawyers - but Killstorm has an isometric camera angle and gameplay those who played the likes of Desert Strike will remember. It's clear what they're going for.Nice Touch has launched a Kickstarter for Killstorm, but it's asking for just £10,000 to complete the project. There's a demo available to play now.The studio was founded in 2011 by designer Richard Bunn and programmer David Green, who left Sony London Studios earlier that year following a round of redundancies at the PlayStation manufacturer. Bunn and Green worked on cancelled PlayStation 3 exclusive Eight Days and other Sony projects before deciding to join forces. Their first game was action adventure Crazy Horses for Windows Phone 7.It's taken to Kickstarter to secure funding it plans to use to hire more people to build more content - as well as get feedback from backers. The Strike series saw five games released during the 90s: Desert Strike, Jungle Strike, Urban Strike, Soviet Strike and Nuclear Strike. Ah, those were the days.

Company of Heroes 2 is returning to the Second World War's western battleground with new standalone multiplayer DLC that offers two new factions - the US Forces and the German Oberkommando West - alongside eight new maps. The DLC's called Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies and players will be able to buy either of the factions separately or together as a bundle. According to executive producer Greg Wilson, each army offers "distinct units, new abilities, new upgrades and new tactical and strategic elements".Most importantly, The Western Front Armies is a standalone release - you won't need Company of Heroes 2 itself in order to play it. "This is a new entry point for the series," says Wilson. "You can play with and against the AI, you can play in comp stomp skirmish modes with your friends and you can also go into our automatch pool against other Company of Heroes players.""The unique thing is that you're actually going to be able to play against existing COH2 content, too," he continues. "So if you buy the US forces, say, you'll be able to drop into the automatch pool and play against the Eastern Front armies potentially on an Eastern Front map. Equally, if you own the original COH2 and you haven't had the chance to pick up any of the Western Front content and you drop into automatch, you'll actually have the opportunity to be matched up with somebody who's on the same side of the war that you are, but potentially on another map. So if you don't own the US and you're playing as the Soviets, you could potentially be teamed up with the US and playing on a Western Front map."The US pricing sees each army costing $12.99, with the bundle available for $19.99. UK prices are yet to be announced.Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies will be released this June. I asked Wilson if that meant it was coming out on D-Day, and he politely suggested I had been thinking about it too much.

As most of us working in IT may know, Microsoft will stop supporting Windows XP on April 8th, 2014. Although this fact has been known for quite some time, XP is still relatively popular in companies and also enjoys noticeable marketshare for home users. Even ATMs are running XP and will continue to do so for some time. A lot of companies/users don't want to change because they see no additional benefit to do a costly upgrade, no reason to change a running system, and they may in some cases be right with their assumptions. So what is the best way to secure this remaining Windows XP systems? Installing the latest security patches, checking firewall status and user permissions etc. should be fairly obvious, as Microsoft Security Essentials may also not receive updates anymore, changing antivirus programs seems a sensible thing to do.

Titanfall's anti-cheating system, FairFight, is now active on PC, and it places all cheaters in the same pool to play with each other – and only each other.
As Respawn puts it, "You can play with other banned players in something that will resemble the Wimbledon of aimbot contests. Hopefully the aimbot cheat you paid for really is the best, or these all-cheater matches could be frustrating for you. Good luck."
If you're not banned and invite a banned friend into your party, you'll all end up playing in the all-cheater pool. Respawn promises that playing with cheaters won't raise your risk of getting banned. Only cheating can do that.
If you think you've been unfairly banned, Respawn says to hit up anticheat@respawn.com.

Remember the day Microsoft announced its new Surface tablets? Sure you do: there was all the usual pomp and circumstance, and even that keyboard coverthat turned the Surface 2 into a portable DJ booth. One thing that may have flown under your radar, though, was the wireless keyboard adapter, a $60 cylinder-shaped thing that allowed users to control their Surface tablets from up to 30 feet away over Bluetooth (like you do with a 10.6-inch device?). In any case, it looks like the accessory never picked up much traction: Microsoft has discontinued the device, which is now showing up as "out of stock" on Microsoft's online store.

The developer claimed on Twitter he had spoken to Valve at GDC, which told him the community voting service would be "gone within 12 months".
Valve boss Gabe Newell has previously said Greenlight would be taken down in future and replaced by a user-curated platform.

Microsoft warned on Monday of a remote code execution vulnerability (CVE-2014-1761) in Microsoft Word 2010 that is being actively exploited in targeted attacks. If successfully exploited, an attacker could gain the same user rights as the current user, Microsoft said, noting that users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than accounts with administrative privileges. 'The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted RTF file using an affected version of Microsoft Word, or previews or opens a specially crafted RTF email message in Microsoft Outlook while using Microsoft Word as the email viewer,' Microsoft explained Microsoft did not share any details on the attacks that leveraged the vulnerability, but did credit Drew Hintz, Shane Huntley, and Matty Pellegrino of the Google Security Team for reporting it to Microsoft."
