Semiconductor company SK Hynix has revealed the world’s first highest density 128GB DDR4 module.
The new module has double the density of 64GB by 'taking advantage of TSV (Through Silicon Via)' technology.
It works at 2133Mbps and with a 64-bit I/O it can process up to 17GB of data per second. Plus it also runs at a low voltage of 1.2V.
Samples of the world’s first 128GB and 64GB modules built on 8Gb DDR4 are available now, with SK Hynix planning to start mass production from the first half of 2015.
“The development of the world’s first 128GB DDR4 module has its significance in opening ultra-high density server market,” said the firm's senior VP and head of DRAM development Sung Joo Hong.
“The company will further strengthen its competitiveness in the premium DRAM sphere with the development of high density, ultra-high speed and low power consuming products."
The server DRAM market is set to grow 37 per cent on average each year until 2018. DDR4 is expected to become the industry standard from 2016.

Seagate has released what it said is the industry's fastest hard drive with up to a 6TB capacity, matching one released by WD last year. WD's 6TB Ultrastar He6 was hermetically sealed with helium inside, something the company said was critical to reducing friction for additional platters, while also increasing power savings and reliability. Seagate, however, said it doesn't yet need to rely on Helium to achieve the 50% increase in capacity over its last 4TB drive. The company used the same perpendicular magnetic recording technology that it has on previous models, but it was able to increase areal density from 831 bits per square inch to 1,000. The new drive also comes in 2TB, 4TB and 5TB capacities and with either 12Gbps SAS or 6Gbps SATA connectivity. The six-platter, enterprise-class drive is rated to sustain about 550TB of writes per year — 10X that of a typical desktop drive."

Nearly every longtime Windows user looks back on Windows XP with a certain fondness, but the party's over according to Microsoft. 'It's time to move on,' says Tom Murphy, Microsoft's director of communications for Windows. 'XP was designed for a different era.' But Ian Paul writes in PC World that many people around the world refuse to give up on XP. But why? What's so great about an operating system that was invented before the age of Dropbox and Facebook, an OS that's almost as old as the original Google search engine? Bob Appel, a retiree based in Toronto, says he uses 12 PCs in a personal Dropbox-like network—10 of which are running XP. 'I use a third-party firewall, a free virus checker, and run Housecall periodically,' says Appel. 'My Firefox browser uses Keyscrambler, HTTPS Anywhere, Ghostery, and Disconnect. I also have a VPN account (PIA) when traveling. For suspicious email attachments, I deploy private proprietary bioware (me!) to analyze before opening. All the "experts" say I am crazy. Thing is, I stopped the security updates in XP years ago after a bad update trashed my system, and yet I have never been infected, although online for hours each day. So, crazy though I be, I am sticking with XP.'

The official end to Windows XP support may have sent many companies into a panic, but it was good news for PC manufacturers this winter... well, sort of. BothGartner and IDC report a big increase in PC shipments during the first quarter thanks to companies scrambling to replace old XP computers at the last possible moment. However, the two analyst groups note that the sudden spike only managed to soften ongoing declines in PC shipments, rather than reverse them. Depending on which research firm you ask, the number of PCs on the market dropped between 1.7 percent to 4.4 percent year-over-year. That's better than what system builders have seen over most of the past two years, but it's not exactly a recovery.

April 10th, 2014, 00:08 Posted By: wraggster
AMD has released ‘the world's fastest and most powerful graphics card’, the AMD Radeon R9 295X2.
The card combines two of AMD’s Radeon R9 Series GPUs in a single card, and is designed to play games at maximum settings in 4K resolution.
"AMD is thrilled to launch the AMD Radeon R9 295X2 graphics card, built on the same award-winning Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture that powers the gaming industry," said Matt Skynner, corporate vice president and general manager, graphics business unit, AMD.
"This record-shattering dual-GPU card will enable industry-leading audio and visually stunning 4K gaming, proving once again that Radeon is gaming."
The 295X2 includes what AMD claims to be the industry’s first-ever advanced closed-loop, pre-assembled and maintenance-free liquid cooling system in a graphics card, developed in collaboration with Asetek.
"Asetek is proud to collaborate with AMD to provide an outstanding cooling solution for a truly cutting-edge and groundbreaking graphics card," said Andre Eriksen, CEO and founder of Asetek.
"With our custom fitted liquid cooling technology, the AMD Radeon R9 295X2 graphics card delivers quiet powerful performance."
The 295X2 is built on AMD’s Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, and as such supports AMD’s Mantle API. The firm’s TrueAudio and Eyefinity technologies are also supported.

People scoffed when NVIDIA first revealed the Shield (just check out these comments), but a slew of software updates are turning it into one of the best Android gaming gewgaws out there. Speaking of which, this month's update has just gone live and it's a doozy. Once installed, you can use your Shield to remotely play up to 100 supported games that live on your home PC (assuming you've got a solid network connection, that is) as well as stream games running on properly equipped laptops too. Throw in support for Bluetooth keyboards and mice for games that require plenty of precision (we're looking at you, Civ 5) and you've got yourself a hefty little package to install. Between all these updates and that temporary $50 price cut NVIDIA announced last month, it's clear that the company is committed to the Shield vision -- now we just need to see if consumers inundated with mobile gaming options finally take the plunge.

As Whoever57 pointed out, there are some who will still get support for Microsoft Windows XP — the 'haves'. However, most will be the 'have nots.' Anytime you have such market imbalance, there is opportunity. Since Microsoft clearly intends to create a disparity, there will certainly be those who defy it. What will Microsoft do to prevent bootleg patches of XP from being sold to the unwashed masses? How will they stop China from supporting 100 million bootleg XP users? And how easily will it be to crack Microsoft's controls? How big will the Windows XP patch market be?"There are a lot of businesses still on Windows XP; if you work for one of them, will the official end of life spur actually cause you to upgrade? (And if so, to what?)

Microsoft has demonstrated a ‘Windows in the Car’ in-car operating system.
Showcasing the concept at the Build 2014 developer’s conference, the integrated system was shown to utilise a Windows 8-like Start Screen which displayed a variety of information, including current and upcoming speed limit information.
Other display options included navigation, now playing and communication – connectivity with a Windows Phone, handsfree voice calls and the ability to read text messages out loud were all shown to be possible.
Like Windows 8, Windows in the Car highlighted the presence of apps in a marketplace to add to the car’s system.
Music apps already shown to be built into the system included Spotify, Amazon Music, Pandora, Audible and Xbox Radio.
Microsoft added that it would specifically encourage developers to design apps specifically for safe driving behaviour.
The demonstration follows the recent announcement of Apple’s CarPlay system, which allows drivers to connect their iPhone to a compatible car to display utilities and media options as part of a dashboard display.
Some existing in-car systems are already built with Windows as a foundation, such as Ford’s Sync 2 system.
No release window for a consumer version of the Windows in the Car platform was revealed.

Intel has released the Minnowboard Max, a Raspberry Pi-like single-board computer.
The mini PC runs the Linux and Android operating systems, powered by a 1.91GHz Atom E3845 processor.
On top of this, the Minnowboard is open-source, with Intel providing the board schematics freely for download.
In addition, the integrated Intel graphics chipset also uses open-source drivers, allowing hackers and tech tinkerers to bend the board’s programming to their desire.
The $99 (£60) Minnowboard shares some similarities with the Raspberry Pi, in that it aims to provide wannabe programmers with a cheap way to design electronic systems, but is unlikely to compete directly given the Pi’s preference for the educational sector.
Intel’s announcement of the all-in-one board follows a crowdfunding campaign earlier this week for an open-source laptop design, which like the Minnowboard and Pi uses a miniature all-in-one ‘system on a board’ to allow open-source customisation.

Resellers are unsure whether a drop in Windows 8 license fees would boost demand for the OS.
Rumours suggest that fees could fall from £30 to £9 for devices priced under £150. The reduction could be reflected in the price of Windows 8 devices, with Microsoft said to be eyeing the cost of Chromebooks.
Sales of computers pre-installed with Windows 7 are due to end in October 2014.
Mike Hoffman, director of Drum Brae Solutions, told PCR that no price drop was needed.
“Windows is already a lot cheaper on small form factor tablets and that is all they need,” he explained. “We have installed Windows 8 on every machine since its launch and the response has been good.”
AML Midlands’ Anthony Lay agreed that the OS is cheap enough, and echoed Hoffman’s comments that the divisive tablet/desktop hybrid design was a boon.
“Windows 8 doesn’t need a price drop,” he stated.
“Users hate change, but once you see how the tablet, mobile and laptop [systems] all integrate together, we have even seen users contemplate leaving their Apple world.”
However, some retailers said that the lack of consistency in Windows’ design had begun to put off customers – and a price cut might draw them back in.
Don Edward Wijesuriya at Microrays added: “Microsoft do need to drop the price.
“Many people hate Windows 8’s user interface. It’s a good option to reduce the license fee.”
Microsoft was itself quiet on the matter.
“We have nothing to share [regarding the rumours],” a spokesperson told PCR.

Good news for gamers who've been eyeing Valve's upcoming Steam Machines: Unreal Engine 4.1 will support the Linux-based SteamOS after a pending update. In a blog post today, Epic Games' Mike Fricker announced that the source code now includes "initial support for running and packaging games for Linux and Steam OS." This means that upcoming UE4 titles like Daylight and Fortnite could be ported to the systems. If you'll recall, CryEngine -- the game engine that powers the likes of Ryse: Son of Rome and others -- added Linux support back in early March to prep for the launch of Valve's newfangled platform.

The UK Government and Microsoft have sealed a deal which will see Windows XP support extended by a year for public sector workers.
Under the deal, Microsoft will provide security patches for Windows XP until April 8th 2015 – exactly one year after widespread support ends for the aging operating system.
Security fixes will similarly be issued for Microsoft’s Office 2003 and Exchange 2003 software, which will lose support alongside XP.
According to The Register, the final price of the deal between the Government and Microsoft was valued at £5.584 million, with savings generated by the extended support predicted to be around £20 million.
The extended support won’t be provided automatically, with departments and other bodies having to apply for inclusion in the scheme.
“We are pleased to have signed an agreement with Microsoft to maintain critical and important security updates,” commented a spokesperson for the Cabinet Office.
Microsoft reiterated in a statement that “agreements such as these do not remove the need to move off Windows XP as soon as possible.”
The news of the deal comes alongside the announcement that the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham has decided to deal with the end of support for Windows XP by migrating to Google’s Chrome OS platform.
The Borough has started a migration project which will see over 4,000 Windows desktops and laptops replaced by Google Chromeboxes and Chromebooks, with the scheme predicted to take full effect by June.
The Borough projects savings of approximately £400,000 on the back of adopting Chrome devices, which tend to be cheaper than comparable Windows machines.
Rupert Hay-Campbell, ICT and information governance officer at the council, revealed that the Borough will pay around £200 for each Chrome device, compared with £340 to £350 for a Windows desktop and £500 to £600 for a Windows laptop.
Despite moving away from Microsoft hardware, the Borough won’t be abandoning the tech giant’s products just yet.
"At this stage we're still going to be using [Microsoft] Office, Outlook and Exchange, but we're planning to look at a move to a cloud-based productivity and email tool later in the year – and that would clearly be an evaluation of Google Apps and Office 365," explained Hay-Campbell.
Check out PCR's guides to how to cope with the end of support for Windows XP and which products and services to use to migrate ahead of the April 8th switch-off date.
