Graphics specialist Nvidia has said that despite tablets ‘cannibalising’ standard notebook devices, gaming notebooks are continuing to grow in strength.
Speaking at the launch of its 800M range of notebook graphics cards, senior product marketing manager Mark Aevermann told PCR: “[Traditional and gaming notebooks] appear to be very different markets, serving very different users.
“In 2013 the overall notebook industry was down by about nine per cent,” he explained.
“Gaming notebooks have [instead] been growing by about 25 per cent every year.
"They say tablets are cannibalising notebooks – but that has no bearing on the health and interest in gaming notebooks.”
Aevermann said that one explanation for gaming notebooks’ success could be the attractive balance of portability and power.
“PC gaming is huge,” he added, citing the $25 billion market’s out-selling of the music and cinema sectors.
“Quite frankly, it’s underestimated in terms of how popular it is.”

"StarCraft II is popular among competitive gamers for having the depth necessary to reward differences in skill. A new studyhas found that your ability keep up with the game's frantic pace starts to decline at age 24. This is relevant to more than justStarCraft II players: 'While many high-performance athletes start to show age-related declines at a young age, those are often attributed to physical as opposed to brain aging. ... While previous lab tests have shown faster reaction times for simple individual tasks, it was never clear how much relevance those had to complex, real-world tasks such as driving. Thompson noted that Starcraft is complex and quite similar to real-life tasks such as managing 911 calls at an emergency dispatch centre, so the findings may be directly relevant. However, game performance was much easier to analyze than many real-life situations because the game generates detailed logs of every move. In a way, Thompson said, the study is a good demonstration of what kinds of insights can be gleaned from the "cool data sets" generated by our digital lives.'"

This fall marks 20 years that Microsoft has been making keyboards (make that "computer hardware," as it was quaintly called back in 1994). Ironically, though, as the company approaches this milestone, it's now making accessories not just for PCs, but... Smart TVs? Yes indeed. The company just announced the All-in-Media Keyboard, and while you could use it with a computer, it was designed to help you navigate your TV or media streamer from your couch. Chiefly, it features a built-in touchpad -- something we've seen on other devices -- meaning you won't need to balance a standalone mouse on your La-Z-Boy..

More than a third of games installed across Steam accounts have not been opened once, according to a new report.
Valve wants to thrive in the living-room with its new line of Steam MachinesA comprehensive breakdown of Steam sales and game consumption habits, researched by and published on Ars Technica, shows that more than 780 million games have been installed since Valve's digital games platform launched in 2004.
Of this mass of games, about 37 per cent have not been opened, while 17 per cent have been played for less than an hour.
However, Ars Technica notes that many Steam games are packaged as part of bundle deals, while others are given away as part of competitions, and some of the most popular games are free to download.
The publication also notes that its game consumption data is only representative from March 2009, meaning the first five years of Steam player analytics are missing.
Nevertheless, measured samples (of roughly 85,000 valid Steam user accounts for each test) reveal that more than half of Steam's titles have not been meaningfully engaged with. The study's author, Kyle Orland, also details the experiment's methodology and demonstrates tests for accuracy.
Elsewhere in the report, it is revealed that Dota 2 has been installed on some 25 million Steam accounts, while Team Fortress 2 has reached 20 million accounts. Acclaimed Valve title Half-Life 2 is installed on eight million machines, while the most popular third-party title is Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim, which was installed on six million Steam accounts.
Above:Most popular games on Steam (by installed number)Meanwhile, the study also reveals the most unplayed games, with Valve's Ricochet played by some 300,000 of the game's total 6.7 million owners. The official Half-Life 2 mod, Lost Coast, has been installed on 12.8 million accounts but only played by some 2.1 million fans.
The data also reveals the most played game per head, by far, is Sports Interactive's Football Manager 2014. In terms of median hours spent on the game, Football Manger 2014 is played for 100 hours per average user. That is twice as long as Skyrim, which clocks in at 53 hours.

UPDATE: The physical version of Dark Souls II on PC has been delayed by one week in the UK, MCV can confirm.
"This is only affecting the UK on the boxed release of the game," a Bandai Namco rep said. "It will be delayed unfortunately and we apologise to UK customers. This is due to a manufacturing issue with packaging. To confirm this will only affect the UK boxed launch."
This means the disc version will arrive in the UK on May 2nd. The UK digital release and both the digital and physical release in other territories will still arrive on April 25th as planned.
ORIGINAL STORY: PC owners may have to wait a little longer to get their hands on the PC version of Dark Souls II.
NeoGAF users are claiming that Amazon UK has been emailing out those who have pre-ordered the game saying that it will now arrive on May 2nd – that’s a week later than the original April 25threlease date.
Amazon currently doesn’t specify a release date for the game on its listing. ShopTo, however, is also now saying it will be released on May 2nd. Note that others such as GAME are still saying April 25th.
MCV has contacted Bandai Namco for clarification.
Forum users are getting excited about the possibility that the delay may be designed to give developer From Software the time to re-introduce some of the flashier graphical elements that the console release was criticised for omitting.
However, early previews of the PC version suggest that while the SKU will offer a host of visuals benefits over the console releases (such as increased resolution and FPS) it still lacks many of the flourishes seen in pre-release preview videos – none of which has stopped it being a smash hit with critics.

Microsoft TechNet blog makes clear that Windows 8.1 will not be patched, and that users must get Windows 8.1 Update if they want security patches, InfoWorld's Woody Leonhard reports. 'In what is surely the most customer-antagonistic move of the new Windows regime, Steve Thomas at Microsoft posted a TechNet article on Saturday stating categorically that Microsoft will no longer issue security patches for Windows 8.1, starting in May,' Leonhard writes. 'Never mind that Windows 8.1 customers are still having multiple problems with errors when trying to install the Update. At this point, there are 300 posts on the Microsoft Answers forum thread 'Windows 8.1 Update 1 Failing to Install with errors 0x80070020, 80073712 and 800F081F.' The Answers forum is peppered with similar complaints and a wide range of errors, from 800F0092 to 80070003, for which there are no solutions from Microsoft. Never mind that Microsoft itself yanked Windows 8.1 Update from the corporate WSUS update server chute almost a week ago and still hasn't offered a replacement

The PC versions of Crysis and Crysis 2 will lose multiplayer functionality when GameSpy's matchmaking services go dark on May 31. The single-player campaigns as well as the multiplayer modes for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of both games will remain playable.
"As of May 31 this year, the multiplayer modes in Crysis and Crysis 2 for PC will no longer be playable," Crytek wrote on its forums. "The conclusion of online multiplayer support comes as a result of GameSpy Technology shutting down all their hosting services. GameSpy have been providing multiplayer functionality for Crysis and Crysis 2 since they launched."
GameSpy announced plans to shut down its middleware servers earlier this month, over a year after it ceased editorial production. The service began as a Quake server search program in 1996 before hosting online multiplayer for hundreds of games. EA said it will shift multiplayer for its older Battlefield games from GameSpy to Origin last week.

Valve will release its Steam Controller in "October or November" this year, according a report.
Speaking to PC Gamer, a 'trusted hardware source' confirmed the information, adding that the controller's completion will lead the way to the availability of 'most' Steam Machines.
Meanwhile, the list of titles which will be natively playable on SteamOS has risen from 382 to 500, according to the same source.
Valve made significant changes to its Steam Controller in January, removing the central touchscreen and replacing them with standard face buttons. The company unveiled the first iteration in September 2013.
Valve confirmed 14 third-party Steam Machines in January from companies ranging Alienware to Origin.
Each will run Valve's Linux-based SteamOS, which promises "significant performance increases" over other operating systems.
The operating system is built especially for games designed natively for "living-room hardware", but users can also play existing Windows and Mac games on a television by running Steam on a home computer and streaming their games wirelessly over a home network.

Even Microsoft knows that Windows Live Tiles have so much potential to be a lot better, especially on touchscreen devices. In fact, a group of the company's researchers in Asia have apparently been working on making Live Tiles interactive. As you can see in the videos after the break, the experimental tiles expand when touched, showing you its contents right on the Start screen instead of launching the app. For instance, touching the mail app automatically shows a list of your emails in an expanded view, which looks very similar to an Android widget.

The Linux 3.15 kernel now in its early life will be able to suspend and resume much faster than previous versions of the Linux kernel. A few days ago we saw ACPI and Power Management updates that enable asynchronous threads for more suspend and resume callbacks. Carrying out more async operations leads to reduced time for the system suspend and then resuming. According to one developer, it was about an 80% time savings within one of the phases. On Friday, work was merged that ensured the kernel is no longer blocked by waiting for ATA devices to resume. Multiple ATA devices can be woken up simultaneously, and any ATA commands for the device(s) will be queued until they have powered up. According to an 01.org blog post on the ATA/SCSI resume optimization patches, when tested on three Intel Linux systems the resume time was between 7x and 12x faster (not including the latest ACPI/PM S&R optimizations)."

Ars reports on a panel at PAX East which delved into the strength of the PC as a platform for games, and what its future looks like. The outlook is positive: 'Even as major computer OEMs produce numbers showing falling sales, the PC as a platform (and especially a gaming platform) actually shows strong aggregate growth.' The panelists said that while consoles get a lot of the headlines, the PC platform remains the only and/or best option for a lot of developers and gamers. They briefly addressed piracy, as well: 'Piracy, [Matt Higby] said, is an availability and distribution problem. The more games are crowdfunded and digitally delivered and the less a "store" figures into buying games, the less of a problem piracy becomes. [Chris Roberts] was quick to agree, and he noted that the shift to digital distribution also helps the developers make more money — they ostensibly don't have everyone along the way from retailers to publishers to distributors taking their cut from the sale.'"

Following word that the GameSpy online matchmaking service will cease to be after May 31, EA has revealed plans to move its GameSpy games to the publisher's own online service, Origin.
When asked specifically about the fate of online shooters Battlefield 2,Battlefield 2142 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, the Origin Twitter account replied with, "We're working on transitioning those games after the shut down so you'll still be able to play them." Later, IGN asked EA for clarification on its plans and were told that work is not yet complete, but more information would appear shortly. "We're working on finding a transition, but still have technical hurdles to overcome," EA said. "We will make an announcement when there is news to share."
In the meantime, those hard up for a military shooter can set their sights on the more recent Battlefield 4. After six months of issues, it now works more or less as it should.

Cloud gaming outlet OnLive has halved the price of its CloudLift service to under £5.
The streaming service allows users to play their existing games purchased on Steam across a variety of devices, including tablet PCs and TVs, through the cloud.
But now the firm has slashed the price of the monthly service to £4.95 despite its launch just last month.
The price cut comes as OnLive revealed five new Warner Bros' title have joined the CloudLift line-up, including new release LEGO The Hobbit.
Other new additions include Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Lords of the Rings: War in the North and indie title Shadow Warrior.

The stodgy old enterprise company whose former CEO once called open source Linux a 'cancer' is gone. So is its notorious tendency to keep developers and consumers within its walled gardens. The 'One Microsoft' goal that looked like more gaseous corporate rhetoric upon its debut last summer now is instead much closer to actual reality. No longer are there different kernels for Windows 8, Windows Phone or Windows RT it's now all just One Windows. As goes the Windows kernel, so goes the entire company. Microsoft finally appears to have aimed all its guns outside the company rather than at internal rivals. Now it needs to rebuild its empire upon this new reality."
