First time accepted submitter ogcricket (3557713) writes with news about a new laptop designed by Andrew Huang and Sean Cross."Earlier this year, the two Singapore-based engineers fashioned a laptop made almost entirely from open source hardware, hardware whose designs are freely available to the world at large. They called it Project Novena. Anyone could review the designs, looking for bugs and security flaws, and at least in theory, that meant you could be confident the machine was secure from top to bottom, something that’s more desirable than ever in the post-Edward Snowden age....The original idea was simply to encourage others to build their own open source laptops at home. But now the pair are taking the project a step further. Starting today, you can order your own pre-built Novena laptop through the crowd-funding site Crowd Supply, and it will ship out in the coming weeks. Much like Kickstarter, Crowd Supply is place where you can put up money to help fund a company and then get a product in exchange."

Today [Bunnie] is announcing the launch of the Novena Open Laptop. When we first heard he was developing an open source laptop as a hobby project, we hoped we’d see the day where we could have our own. Starting today, you can help crowdfund the project by pre-ordering a Novena.
The Novena is based on the i.MX6Q ARM processor from Freescale, coupled to a Xilinx Spartan 6 FPGA. Combined with the open nature of the project, this creates a lot of possibilities for using the laptop as a hacking tool. It has dual ethernet, for routing or sniffing purposes. USB OTG support lets the laptop act as a USB device, for USB fuzzing and spoofing. There’s even a high speed expansion bus to interface with whatever peripheral you’d like to design.
You can pre-order the Novena in four models. The $500 “just the board” release has no case, but includes all the hardware needed to get up and running. The $1,195 ”All-in-One Desktop” model adds a case and screen, and hinges open to reveal the board for easy hacking. Next up is the $1,995 “Laptop” which includes a battery control board and a battery pack. Finally, there’s the $5000 “Heirloom Laptop” featuring a wood and aluminum case and a Thinkpad keyboard.
The hardware design files are already available, so you can drool over them. It will be interesting to see what people start doing with this powerful, open computer once it ships. After the break, check out the launch video.

Microsoft's Build 2014 kicks off tomorrow, but it's not just Windows Phones, tablets, Office or even the return of Clippy. Redmond has plans to bring its operating system, well, everywhere else. A Windows on Devices site has apparated into existence, mentioning robots, talking bears, the Internet of Things and Intel'sGalileo acting as developmental hardware. It looks like Microsoft's planning a charm offensive on the maker community, with the site linking out to a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Yu62StlsMY"]Big-styled-- presumably Microsoft-powered -- as well as Maker Faire. The first SDK will appear soon, (by the end of Spring 2014) with additional releases through out the year. Microsoft says it'll have a life-sized piano to show-off its Windows on Devices conceit and naturally, it reckons its cloud services will serve as the perfect online accompaniment.

You didn't think Microsoft was going to launch Office for iPad without a Windows counterpart waiting in the wings, did you? Sure enough, Microsoft has just shown off its long-expected touch-native Office for Windows in beta form. The software shares a few interface elements in common with the iPad release, but not much -- this is clearly built for Windows tablets, with a more traditional layout that expands objects to make them finger-friendly. There will be plenty of gesture support, though. You can circle an item with your finger to highlight it, and you can pinch and swipe to get around much of the productivity suite. Unfortunately, the folks in Redmond aren't saying when this touch-ready Office will ship. The demo is just a preview of what to expect, so it could be a while before you're using the software yourself.

Crafting a seriously great app experience for one device is hard enough, but these days developers have plenty of form factors to tackle. Microsoft is trying to ease their suffering a bit with the introduction of universal Windows apps, which just took the stage at the company's Build conference in San Francisco. Long story short, you'd theoretically only have to write an app in Visual Studio once. Most of the code (in the language of your choosing, Microsoft insists) remains the same, but that universal app will take on a different appearance depending on what device it's running on. Well, if you want it to, anyway. Naturally, developers can fine-tune the finished product too, so the experience of using the app on Windows Phone feels as polished as it does on a PC. You'd be forgiven for thinking this is a bit on the dry side, but this is a big deal -- Microsoft is trying to break down the app barrier so devs can make more consistently good apps for us faster.

At IDF Shenzhen today, Intel briefly announced the 14nm successor to its budget 22nm Bay Trail processors. Dubbed Braswell, this new SoC architecture is mainly aimed at the likes of affordable Chrome OS and Android devices. It will also complement the higher-end Broadwell announced last September (and pictured after the break), though there's no word on availability for these two 14nm, 64-bit lines -- last we heard was that Broadwell's production had been delayed, with shipment still on track for the second half of this year. Fanless Core i7 systems just can't come any sooner.

Amid the volley of announcements from Microsoft's Build conference, is word that the new Kinect for Windows has a near-future release time-frame for both the hardware and its SDK. The desktop version of Microsoft's do-all sensor will be available to the public this summer, as will its development framework. Perhaps more importantly, once they're done, developers can publish their creations to the Windows Store; meaning, there'll probably be more Kinect applications for Windows in one place than ever before. As Redmond tells it, this self-publishing will happen "later this summer." Next summer (notice a theme here?), Microsoft is adding support for one of gaming's most pervasive dev toolkits to Kinect for Windows: the Unity engine -- tools developers already know the strengths and weaknesses of, which should bolster the app selection even further. Given that the Xbox One will see Unity support this year, this could mean that cross-platform apps and games are a distinct possibility. Or, maybe we'll get a cool new bank account manager instead.

With Windows 8.1 updates rolling out on April 8th across all platforms, you didn't think Microsoft was going to forget its browser, did you? Redmond has unified features on its mobile and desktop Internet Explorer 11 versions, while making it easier to use on different-sized devices. IE 11 for Windows Phone 8.1, in particular, underwent a major overhaul. You can now pin sites to Live Tiles like you can with the full version and sync tabs between devices using OneDrive. Another highly-requested new feature is InPrivate browsing, which leaves no trace of your surfing * la Chrome's Incognito mode. There's also a nod to low-bandwidth users with the so-called High Savings data compression mode which loads only the elements you want, reducing data use by 60-80 percent. Finally, Microsoft has introduced voice commands to WP8.1, plus a new reading view that brings a Kindle-like look to articles on your smartphone. Meanwhile, Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 8.1 received more subtle tweaks -- check after the break for more.

Mutant Mudds developer Renegade Kid has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a new console-bound game - a first-person horror titled Cult County.
The Kickstarter campaign went live today, as previously promised, with a funding goal of $580,000. According to Renegade: "Cult County is an all-new first-person survival horror game that blends the episodic story-telling of The Walking Dead with the classic tension-filled exploration and action of Silent Hill and Resident Evil."
Renegade Kid, founded by veteran game developer Jools Watcham, promises to draw from its experiences as the studio behind the well received 2007 DS survival horror game, Dementium: The Ward, and its 2010 sequel Dementium II.
Cult County will feature story-driven gameplay full of "mystery and scares", set in a small West Texas town. The player will endure "creepy enemy encounters" with a mix of gunplay and melee combat.
The developer says it has turned to crowd funding to allow it "creative freedom away from publishers", and to allow fans to play a part in the open development of the game.
The game is in development for Steam (PC, Mac & Linux), Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, PS3, and Vita. Due to licensing complications, an Xbox 360 version is a stretch at $640,000, $60,000 more than the standard target of $580,000.
Cult County was originally revealed as a 3DS game but, according to Renegade, "Cult County has grown beyond the scope of the 3DS, and we do not want to compromise our vision for the game." It adds, "If there is enough interest in seeing Cult County on the 3DS, a Nintendo 3DS stretch goal could be added. However, it would need to cover the cost of developing a separate game entirely, as we would need to rebuilt the game from scratch with our proprietary 3DS engine."

The time has come for Windows XP to end, with Microsoft dropping support for the OS on April 8th. PCR takes a look at the effect it could have on businesses and consumers, and how to prepare for the upcoming switch-off…
Twelve years, five months and 25 days – it’s been a long life for Windows XP since its release on October 25th 2001.
However, XP’s longevity and reliability could be the very things now set to challenge the foundations of firms built around the platform. A lot has changed in over a decade – networking has boomed, security issues have evolved and hardware developments have continued to snowball – and a shift to a new OS holds a raft of potential issues, incompatibilities and dangers for businesses.
But despite the possible pitfalls, most firms should be able to painlessly migrate.
“Understand the risks that a lack of [XP] support will bring to your organisation,” analyst Gartner advises.
“Prioritise users and applications and move the most critical ones to supported platforms first, and address those that can’t be migrated off with other means to reduce risk.”
Although many firms will make the switch before April 8th, there will doubtless be several who don’t make the jump – Gartner forecasts that more than 15 per cent of enterprises will still have Windows XP running on one in 10 PCs after support ends.
Despite analyst claims that migrating would cost close to £1,000 per machine, Microsoft says that costs will actually be far lower.
“Hardware costs have decreased significantly since XP was launched so a new PC should cost much less than you might think,” David Rodger, commercial lead for the Windows business group at Microsoft UK, told PCR.
“You can get a good new device from about £350.
“It’s [also] a good idea to research new form factors and devices available for the modern workplace.”
For those left behind, security risks will be greater – but retailers and resellers can help by providing security or virtualisation solutions.
“There are huge opportunities for VARs and support firms,” said Catalin Cosoi, chief security strategist at Bitdefender.
“We are advising companies that cannot let go of XP to choose a security for virtualised environments solution that does still support XP.
“XP is a very well characterised system and there is vast know-how available on how to keep it safe, for all its inherent flaws.
“That being said,” he added, “the sooner companies migrate, the better.”
Those who choose to update to another standard Windows iteration face another choice – which OS to migrate to.
Some may struggle to decide between the older Windows 7, regarded by many to be the ‘new XP’, or the newer, but less familiar, Windows 8.
“Windows 7 adoption has been growing much slower than XP adoption did back in the day,” Cosoi responded, when asked if the OS is set to recreate XP’s success.
“We’d prefer that there never be a ‘new XP’ – the dangers of monoculture are well known and have been amply demonstrated in the heyday of XP.”
Analyst CCS Insight said that enterprise users are far more likely to flock to 7 than 8 – and the future of Microsoft’s flagship OS could be in the balance.
“The timing of this move is likely to reinforce Windows 7 as the dominant corporate OS rather than help Windows 8 crack an enterprise segment that is notoriously slow to evolve,” Geoff Blaber, VP of research for the Americas at CCS Insight, told PCR.
“This is a significant time for Windows 8 and the PC market at large. It will be a clear measure of the appetite for Microsoft’s new OS.”

Cliffhanger Productions has launched its turn-based tactical multiplayer RPGShadowrun Online via Steam Early Access, giving wannabe deckers and samurai a preliminary look at their dystopian cyberpunk future.
The result of a successful Kickstarter campaign, Shadowrun Online is set 20 years after the events of last year's Shadowrun Returns, building on the previous game's storyline with new settings, characters, and missions. The final version will deliver co-op gameplay and an in-depth PvP component, along with an array of item and character customization options.
Cliffhanger Productions notes that the current Steam version lacks many features that are planned for the finished product, however. "This is the most basic early access version - it contains four missions and a 1 vs 1 player PvP, but no character creation, progression or anything else yet - this will all come in time," the developer warns. "We want to make sure the basic combat gameplay works well before we pile more features on it."
Shadowrun Online is regularly priced at $29.99, but is available for $20.99 during its debut week.

Indie studio Red Thread Games announced a release window for Draugen, a first-person survival horror game that will feature support for VR technology like the Oculus Rift.
Red Thread is also working on Dreamfall Chapters, a Kickstarter-funded revival of the classic PC adventure game series The Longest Journey. Red Thread is primarily composed of former staff from The Longest Journey developer Funcom, and was founded by series creator Ragnar Tørnquist.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Tørnquist described the project as "HP Lovecraft meets Dostoyevsky," and "Gone Home meets Amnesia." Kicked off by a grant from the Norwegian Film Institute, Draugen will seek a final round of funding via Kickstarter before it ships for Windows, Mac, Linux, and an undisclosed console platform in 2015.

Back at CES, Intel made a big deal of the fact that it could squeeze a Linux-based PC with Bluetooth and WiFi into the size and shape of an SD card. However, with just a few months to go before the launch of these miniscule Edison development boards, it looks like the chip-maker has changed tack. Instead of being based on the Quark SoC, which was specifically designed for wearables and the Internet of Things, the first Edison products will actually rely on a more traditional Atom chip -- in other words, the same sort used in many current Windows tablets and hybrids. An Edison PC based on Atom should deliver more grunt and connectivity options compared to Quark, and for less money, but it'd be too chubby to ever get accidentally jammed in an SD slot. That's why Intel has been forced to admit that, while it continues to work on Quark, the Edison devices coming this summer will be "slightly larger" than was first claimed.

Now that Samsung's shown us the GS5, Gear 2 smartwatch and its latest Chromebook, it's time for the company's lesser-known product teams to come out of the woodwork. Next up: the display division, which today introduced three new models for 2014, including one with a billion-color, 3,840 x 2,160 screen. That would be the beaut you see above, the 28-inch UD590, which is up for pre-order for $700. In addition to that stunner of a display, it does Picture-in-Picture, with no downgrading in resolution as you move to a smaller frame. There's also a dual-screen feature called Picture-by-Picture, which you could theoretically use for split-screen gaming, even though this was really designed with creative pros in mind. Design-wise, it's fashioned out of metal, with thin bezels and a T-shaped stand that leaves room for speakers and other items you might have on your desk. Around back, you'll find a single DisplayPort, along with two HDMI 1.4 sockets for outputting 4K.

ODAMEX v0.7.0 is released. ODAMEX is a modified Doom source port. Supported platforms are Windows, Mac, Linux and FreeBSD. It has been designed to allow client/server-based Doom gameplay over the Internet and LAN. It currently supports the traditional old-school style of Deathmatch and a Cooperative mode, but it also includes other game modes such as Teamplay and Capture the Flag. It also supports an array of editing features, including the BOOM map format, DeHackEd and BEX patch support and support for several additional music formats, such as MOD and OGG.
ODAMEX v0.7.0 Changelog:
-Fix a crash that occurred when WAD files are loaded during the screen-wipe and the "burn" screen-wipe type is selected.
-r_forceenemycolor and r_forceteamcolor cvars no longer have an effect for spectators since spectators are not considered members of a team.
-Fix a bug that created a shaking-effect if step-mode debugging was used with frame-rates > 35.
-Fix a bug that prevented the user from binding controls to mouse buttons from the options menu.
-Fix a crash that would occur if the operating system could not resolve the local host's IP address.
-Add cvar co_fixzerotags (disabled by default) to allow improperly tagged linedef specials (tag 0) to only affect the sector on the backside of the linedef. This prevents a ZDoom 1.22 bug that would affect adjoining sectors if the linedef special was triggered multiple times in a row.
-Fix being able to find registry keys for IWADs on 64-bit versions of Windows.
-Add color selection widgets to the display options menu for the cvars r_enemycolor and r_teamcolor.
-Add hud_crosshaircolor cvar to change the color of the crosshair and add a color selection widget to the display options menu.
-Clamp the range of the rate cvar for specifying the client's desired bandwidth. This prevents integer overflows if the user attempted to set the cvar to an extremely large value. The current range is from 7.0 to 2000.0.
-Fix a bug that dropped the flag at the map location (0, 0) if a player that was carrying the flag became a spectator.
-The pause key can now be used to pause a netdemo.
-Fix issues with server information not reaching launchers for certain servers due to oversized launcher response packets.
-Fix a bug that changed to the wrong weapon when the player attemped to change to weapon slot 3 while jumping.
-Fix crash that could occur when loading WAD files while a LMP demo is playing.
-Improved the speed of querying servers in OdaLauncher.
-Add kill/death ratio to server information in OdaLauncher.
-Add server search functionality in OdaLauncher.
-Add support for up to 65535 vertices in a map.
-Add support for up more than 65536 segs, subsectors and nodes in a map.
-Add support for the XNOD uncompressed ZDBSP extended node format.
-Fix a bug that causes the server to mis-identify DOOM1.WAD.
-Improve the identification of FreeDoom WAD files.
-Absolute paths are no longer necessary to specify to play a netdemo with the "netplay" console command if the netdemo is located in the default directory. The .odd file extension will also be automatically supplied if a user omits it.
-Remove the skin option from the player setup menu since skins have not been implemented and the option appearing in the menu leads to confusion.
-Make cheat codes case-insensitive.
-Fix a crash displaying the FreeDoom CREDIT patch.
-Fix toggling of latched cvars with the "toggle" client command.
-sv_gravity cvar and gravity changes in ACS now affect vanilla Doom physics (co_zdoomphys = 0).
-sv_splashfactor cvar now affects explosions with vanilla Doom physics (co_zdoomphys = 0).
-Fix sound effect attenuation on level 8 (co_level8soundfeature = 1) for both vanilla and ZDoom attenuation models (co_zdoomsoundcurve = 0 / 1).
-Remove snd_timeout cvar (unused).
-Fix sound effects cutting off incorrectly. This was particularly noticeable firing the plasma rifle.
-Only one CTF announcer sound will play at a time per team.
-Fix issues loading WAD files with filename extensions that were not all lowercase via the "wad" console command or a maplist.
-Fix the handling of raw lump files.
-Allow the use of the "kill" console command when playing coop (if sv_keepkeys cvar is disabled).
-Spectators no longer cycle back to their own POV with the "spyprev"/"spynext" console commands. Instead, spectators can get back to their own POV with the "spectate" console command.
-Screenshots are now in PNG format.
-Fix a crash that could occur if the map changes while there are sectors moving.
-Added 32-bit color rendering mode, set with the cvar vid_32bpp.
-Added SIMD optimizations for capable CPUs to increase the framerate in 32-bit color mode, controlled by the r_optimize cvar (enabled by default).
-Rendering engine rewritten for greatly increased visual accuracy.
-Fixes many rendering-related bugs such as sector height overflows, long linedefs appearing to jiggle, linedefs perpendicular to the screen appearing to jump.
-Updated Announcer
-Added cl_autoscreenshot: takes a screenshot at every intermission
