Mutant Mudds developer Renegade Kid has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a new console-bound game - a first-person horror titled Cult County.
The Kickstarter campaign went live today, as previously promised, with a funding goal of $580,000. According to Renegade: "Cult County is an all-new first-person survival horror game that blends the episodic story-telling of The Walking Dead with the classic tension-filled exploration and action of Silent Hill and Resident Evil."
Renegade Kid, founded by veteran game developer Jools Watcham, promises to draw from its experiences as the studio behind the well received 2007 DS survival horror game, Dementium: The Ward, and its 2010 sequel Dementium II.
Cult County will feature story-driven gameplay full of "mystery and scares", set in a small West Texas town. The player will endure "creepy enemy encounters" with a mix of gunplay and melee combat.
The developer says it has turned to crowd funding to allow it "creative freedom away from publishers", and to allow fans to play a part in the open development of the game.
The game is in development for Steam (PC, Mac & Linux), Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, PS3, and Vita. Due to licensing complications, an Xbox 360 version is a stretch at $640,000, $60,000 more than the standard target of $580,000.
Cult County was originally revealed as a 3DS game but, according to Renegade, "Cult County has grown beyond the scope of the 3DS, and we do not want to compromise our vision for the game." It adds, "If there is enough interest in seeing Cult County on the 3DS, a Nintendo 3DS stretch goal could be added. However, it would need to cover the cost of developing a separate game entirely, as we would need to rebuilt the game from scratch with our proprietary 3DS engine."
