Late last week Microsoft announced that it had discovered a serious security flawin Internet Explorer (versions 6 through 11!) that left users vulnerable to attack. Nefarious characters could use malicious sites to infect a target machine and even take it over remotely. Rather than wait for the regular monthly update, Redmond has decided to release a "out-of-band" update to address the issue. The update will start rolling out this afternoon around 1PM ET (10AM PT) and will quietly install if you have automatic updates turned on. If you're stubborn and insist on updating your machine manually, we highly suggest you make it a point to download this patch today.
If you're also clinging to your aging XP install, we have good news: Microsoft has decided to include your OS in this security update. Despite officially ending support for XP a few weeks ago, the company decided that the threat was serious enough to warrant an exception to the rule.

Sales of the standalone DayZ game have now passed 2 million, according to creator Dean Hall.
That's up some 300,000 copies from the 1.7 million sales publisher Bohemia Interactive announced in March. The latest sales milestone has been hit within six months of the game's release, said Hall via the Twitter announcement, although it's actually less than five months since the game first hit Steam.
"Just over 2 years ago the DayZ mod released. Today, the Standalone game just broke 2 million units in under 6 months," said Hall.
The standalone alpha version of the perma-death zombie survival game released on Steam Early Access and via Bohemia Interactive's online store on December 16, 2013.
The game quickly hit 172,500 in the game's first 24 hours of availability and had topped 800,000 sales by January 6, according to the game's developer.
In March, Hall announced that the team working on DayZ was 'effectively doubling' as he made preparations to leave the project by the end of 2014.
The game is available to buy on Steam for a cost of £19.99 / €23.99 / $29.99.

Ars has reviewed an AMD-powered mini gaming rig made by Gigabyte. The box itself is small and solid, and it runs a pretty beefy video card for its size. The manufacturer even claims Linux support, though the device ships with Windows 8.1. Unfortunately, reality lags a bit behind their plans — Ubuntu boots OK, but driver support is a mess. SteamOS won't run at all. The box is also limited by a mediocre CPU, which is itself limited by heat and power constraints. The review says the machine was 'intriguing and frustrating in equal measure' because 'its ambition is rarely matched by its execution.' It concludes: 'With some time and some different components, a little desktop that can deliver a great gaming experience will surely follow.'

The last time we checked in on crowdfunding success story Star Citizen, Chris Roberts' space epic had pulled in over $41 million. Now that total hassurpassed $43 million.
Like previous earnings landmarks, that figure brings with it a new content addition for the long-awaited game. In this case, all backers will receive a gratis set of marine combat armor within Star Citizen. According to the lore description offered by Roberts Space Industries, the Omni Role Combat Armor mk9 offers mid-range protective capabilities, though it warns that for ultimate protection it's best to simply just avoid firefights. That seems like solid life advice in general.
Having already surpassed so many funding goals, Roberts Space Industries is now looking ahead to the seemingly inevitable $45 million mark where players will unlock the mysterious Hadesian Artifact. Instead of a useful item, Roberts describes the Artifact as "a puzzle players will someday compete to solve," though he makes no mention of how or why.
Those wondering how the Star Citizen development team has spent all that money should view the above footage. Released at last month's PAX East conference, that video serves as the first, and so far only, in-game look at Star Citizen.

Intel has said that the desktop PC’s rapid innovation means the segment is here to stay, despite reports of desktop decline.
Desktop PC systems are continuing to see strong numbers thanks to the evolution of the sector towards adopting new form factors and a continued focus on enthusiast users, Christian Morales (pictured), Intel VP and EMEA GM, told PCR.
“If you look at the statistics for desktops, desktops are slightly down, but within the desktops sector you have all-in-ones, which are growing double digits, you have enthusiast, which is growing double digits, and you have the new NUC [small form-factor PCs],” Morales said.
Channel sales manager Matthew Birch agreed, saying: “The days of just a standard Midi tower are ending.”
“Consumers at home don't want a beige 20-litre box or anything like that – they want something different, and they want something that is either nice to look at or conveniently hidden.
"[But] it's never gone quiet on enthusiast [either] – regardless of what's going on in the market, our enthusiasts and gamers, they've never gone quiet; they've always wanted more and more."
Morales added his prediction that the sector may soon experience a technology shift which sees sales rocket, citing Intel’s own success in the notebook segment.
“Step back to 2003; the notebook market was flat to down in the world,” he explained.
“We then introduced Centrino Mobile technology, and saw double digit growth for many, many years. Then we introduced the Ultrabook initiative – thin and light notebooks were about seven per cent, now they are 40 per cent of the market.
“So you're going to see tremendous innovation in the PC segment – there's so much going on in the ecosystem, and if there is one segment that is innovating the fastest right now, it is the PC segment.
“On desktops and all-in-ones, you will continue to see incredible innovations. For enthusiasts and NUC, we have loads that we're going to introduce.
“There's a lot of innovation going on there."
"We're seeing great demand at the moment," added Birch.
"During the second half of the year I think we're going to see that market really take off."

April 29th, 2014, 00:09 Posted By: wraggster
The new EVP of Microsoft’s device’s group has hinted at the firm’s movement away from the PC platform, in preference of mobile devices.
Stephen Elop (pictured with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, right), formerly CEO of mobile maker Nokia before the acquisition of the firm’s devices and services arm by Microsoft, said that: “The vast majority of people do not have, nor will they ever have, a personal computer.
“They haven't been exposed to Windows or Office, or anything like that, and in their lives it's unlikely that they will.
“And yet, through the mobile phone business we have an opportunity to introduce what we like to call the next billion people, the next billion people to connect to the Internet, to Microsoft, because they'll have an opportunity perhaps to have a first Skype experience, or a first experience with Bing, as an example.
“And so there are literally billions of people who can be exposed to Microsoft for the very first time.”
Elop’s comments come a few months after Jason Holtman, former director of business development at Valve before joining Microsoft as GM for Windows Gaming, departed the company after just six months.
Holtman had been noted for his statements pledging Microsoft’s increased dedication to the PC as a platform for gaming.
Microsoft Studios chief Phil Spencer similarly admitted Microsoft’s past lack of dedication to the PC sector in March, saying that a renewed focus on Windows and PC gaming was “definitely happening”.
“It's important for us to invest in the platform in a real way,” said Spencer at the time.
“The opportunity for Microsoft to be both a devices and services company, so that it can deliver the complete proposition to its consumers, is at the heart of this,” commented Elop, following the completion of Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia.
“We have to not only evolve to fit into Microsoft in general, but into an evolving Microsoft.”

We hope that you heeded our advice to finally ditch Windows XP in favor of a more modern operating system, because there's a new security exploit that'll leave stubborn XP users in the cold. In a security alert released on Saturday, Microsoft reports that there's a serious vulnerability in Internet Explorer 6 through 11 that could allow hackers to take over your computer remotely if you happen to visit a malicious website. According to security firm FireEye, it has already found evidence of an attack that targets IE 9 through 11 that uses a well-known Flash exploitation technique to gain access to your computer's memory. Microsoft has already said it plans to roll out an IE security update for all modern versions of Windows, but if you're using XP, well, you're out of luck, as support for that 12-year-old OS ended a few weeks ago.

On 9th September Destiny will launch on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 - but not PC.It's an unfortunate situation for many who had hoped to play Bungie's next first-person shooter with a mouse and keyboard. And for many it seems like a strange omission, given the game was built on PC in the first place. Surely it wouldn't take much time or effort for Bungie to release a PC version, then?"The truth is it's not that simple," design lead Lars Bakken told Eurogamer during a recent studio tour."I wish it was that simple. It's pretty complicated. That doesn't mean it can't happen in the future, it just means it won't happen right now."Destiny is Bungie's first multiplatform game in over a decade, and its first on a PlayStation platform. The studio handles development of all the versions internally, rather than outsourcing development to other studios. It even handles quality assurance itself - one of the many reasons there are over 500 people currently working on the game inside Bungie's Bellevue, Washington base."The console SKUs are really important for us and that's what we're focusing on," Bakken continued. "We're doing it all internally ourselves. That's a huge endeavour. That's not something we've ever done before."So when I'm playtesting and I'm trying to play PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PS3, that's a lot of work. Adding another thing on there is just crazy. It's crazy to think of right now."Bungie COO Pete Parsons echoed Bakken's response when we quizzed him on the same subject."I think four platforms on day one is a lot, considering we've been a one platform team for a very long time," he said."What is also true is that, as you might imagine, we're all hardcore PC players. We play everything. It doesn't matter if it's a phone, PC or console, we play it. And there are 500 people up there. So we care a lot about the PC."But this is a huge and ambitious project for us, and just getting it on one console would be a momentous challenge. Getting it on four on the same day is something we've never even tried before. We wanted to get it right, and we didn't want to add in tonnes more risk."Parsons also said creating and releasing a PC version of Bungie's shared world shooter would not be as easy as many believe, because all versions of the game connect to the same persistent video game world, which itself extends to multiple platforms."It is not nearly as simple as you think," he said. "It is one central world no matter what the platform, and so that requires lots of intensive thought."Frankly, it's not a thought we can spend time thinking about right now. Just building up the game and putting it across generations of platforms, and working on platforms we've never worked on before with the PlayStation 3, these are very big challenges. I'm thankful we have the engineering team we do."While it seems certain that Destiny will not launch on PC alongside the console versions, what chance post-launch? Or, perhaps, what chance of a PC version of future Destiny games?"I look forward to our future conversations around PC," Parsons said, cryptically."We love the PC. We hear it too. We ask the question of ourselves."

April 25th, 2014, 21:05 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has announced its Q3 results, revealing a revenue boost on the back of its cloud computing investments.
The company stated that revenue for for the quarter, which ended on March 31st, was $20.40 billion (£12.14 billion).
Net profit was $5.66 billion (£3.37 billion) – a fall of 6.5 per cent year-on-year, beating previous predictions of a harsher decline.
The optimistic outcome was partly driven by the success of Microsoft’s cloud computing solution Windows Azure, which saw revenue grow over 150 per cent.
The firm has already announced yet more investment in the sector, with more than 40 new features set to join the Azure platform, to make it more attractive to cloud application developers.
"This quarter's results demonstrate the strength of our business, as well as the opportunities we see in a mobile-first, cloud-first world,” said Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO.
“We are making good progress in our consumer services like Bing and Office 365 Home, and our commercial customers continue to embrace our cloud solutions. Both position us well for long-term growth."
Microsoft added that commercial revenue for products such as Azure and Office 365 had grown seven per cent to reach $12.23 billion (£7.28bn).
Office 365 revenue alone grew over 100 per cent, with the Office 365 Home edition of the productivity software gaining almost one million new subscribers in three months, bringing the total number of subscribers to 4.4 million.
"We delivered solid, broad-based financial results driven by strong execution and continued cost discipline," added Amy Hood, EVP and CFO at Microsoft.
"We are focusing our resources to drive growth and long-term shareholder value."
"Our products and services continue to deliver differentiated business value to our customers, and we continue to win share in areas like cloud services, data platform and infrastructure management," commented Kevin Turner, COO at Microsoft.
Devices and consumer revenue grew 12 per cent to hit $8.3 billion (£4.94bn), with Windows OEM revenue growing four per cent, driven by a 19 per cent increase in Windows OEM Pro revenue.
Microsoft also revealed that it sold in two million Xbox console units, including 1.2 million units of its Xbox One console, which launched in November.
Revenue for the Surface family of tablets grew over 50 per cent to approximately $500 million (£297.6m).
The range of Microsoft’s flagship tablet devices could soon be set to expand to include smaller form-factor devices, if recent reports prove accurate.
Rumours of a ‘Surface Mini’ were sparked by the listing of a ‘Microsoft Surface Mini Smart Cover Case’ on Amazon, with a release date set for May 18th.

April 25th, 2014, 21:02 Posted By: wraggster
The PC games market has now surpassed the console gaming sector in terms of revenues, an analyst has claimed.
DFC Intelligence owner David Cole told PCR: "On a global basis PC games have surpassed console games but the new console systems means consoles should show an increase.
"Among core gamers there is a heavy overlap with most console gamers also playing on a PC. The big difference is that consoles are now the luxury item and PCs are the necessity. Just a few years ago the reverse was true. This means PCs have the broader audience."
DFC previously predicted that PC gaming would eclipse console gaming by 2015, and earlier this year it said that the PC gaming market would exceed $25 billion in 2014.
The news comes after DFC published its latest quarterly paid-for report on PC gaming revenues and usage.
In terms of the most popular PC games, DFC says that MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena)titles and free-to-play games are continuing to perform strongly.
"The MOBA games League of Legends and Dota 2 dominate everything else by an order of magnitude in terms of more usage than other products," added Cole. "In the first part of 2014 we saw some signs that may change with the introduction of new titles and some increased play of games outside the MOBA category.
"But MOBA is dominant. Beyond that it is a nice mix of MMO, strategy and first person shooter.
"We can say that our top 20 list for 2013 had no titles released that year and in Q1 2014 we saw three new titles crack the list: DayZ, Rust and Hearthstone.
"PC player hours have also been remarkably consistent. We had expected hours to fall in 2013 because there were not any major new releases. However, hours were actually flat with 2012 which bodes very well for the market going forward as more triple-A titles are released."
Cole said that Europe has been a big driver of PC trends in recent years especially around free-to-play games, and that the big trend emerging from the US is likely to be more triple-A titles released for console and PC.
He also anticipates an increasing crossover between different platforms.
"There is a blurring of platforms where it starts to get hard to define what is a PC and what is a mobile device," Cole explained.
"Hearthstone was a great example of this as it released for both PC and iPad. Not all games fit that model but as we mentioned core gamers now tend to play on multiple devices."

DayZ bested Dark Souls II pre-orders to claim the top spot on this week's Steam top ten sellers chart.
Bohemia's open world survival game continues to set the pace, even months after its Early Access release. Dark Souls II should have enough gusto to overtake it in the coming week however, as the Steam edition launches this Thursday.

Watch Dogs pre-orders had the game in the sixth position, while Goat Simulator continues to hang around in ninth. Here's the full list:

"Today BioWare announced a new game in its popular Dragon Age RPG series titled Inquisition. The game will follow the story of an Inquisitor trying to rally the world against the magic-laden forces spewing from rifts opening to another place. The game's creative director, Mike Laidlaw, says players will be able to watch the world descend into chaos, and then deal with the burdens of power as they rally forces in opposition. BioWare is also taking the opportunity to fix all of the things they broke in Dragon Age 2: 'Top-down tactical view is back. Playable races are back. The game seems to have more of an emphasis on challenge thanks to non-regenerative health.' The game will launch on October 7th for the PC, PS3/4, and Xbox 360/One."

Tablets have come a long way in the past few years, and it has become possible to find a capable device for under $200. But what about the tablets pushing toward the high end of the spectrum? Xplore Technologies sells a line of tablets that top out at $5,600. Who on earth would pay that much? The military, of course. 'The DMSR models both have handles and are encased in tough protective covers. They can be dropped more than 2 meters onto a plywood floor and 1.2 meters onto concrete, and can operate in temperatures between -30 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit (-34 to 60 degrees Celsius). They've been tested to the U.S. military's tough MIL-STD-810G standard for extreme conditions. The tablets run Windows and come with Intel's latest Core i5 or i7 Haswell processors. Solid-state drive options extend to 480GB. ... They display images at 1024 x 768 resolution. That's less than some cheaper Windows tablets, but Xplore claims to offer excellent LCD visibility in sunlight thanks to a display luminescence of 1,300 NITS. The tablets have internal fans but can still run for up to eight-and-a-half hours on a 10-cell battery, Xplore said. They weigh a hefty 2.4 kilograms.'

A proposed spiritual successor to Rare's Nintendo 64 platformer Banjo-Kazooiehas been called off, series composer Grant Kirkhope confirmed in a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" post this week.
"The other guys actually had a secret meeting in a pub near Rare and we even got as far as having a character drawn up and a demo level type thing but it all fell to bits .... everyone's got other jobs, etc.," Kirkhope said.
Developed by a team of ex-Rare staffers, the "Mingy Jongo" project promised to retain the detailed environments and googly-eyed characters of its N64 inspiration. The team's Twitter account went dark in December 2012, and a proposed Kickstarter project failed to materialize.

The Humble Store has teamed up with Kalypso to discount a slew of the publisher's titles for the next 80 hours (or so) as part of this week's special promotion. While you can save a few dollars off Kalypso's most recent releases – such as $5 off Tropico 5 – it's the company's back catalog that has seen the most significant price cut for the sale; up to 80% off.
Tropico 4 is down to $6 from $30; or you can snag its entire collection of DLC for $10. The sale also drops Jagged Alliance: Back in Action to $7.49, from $30.
Ten percent of sales at The Humble Store are given to charity. Humble supports multiple charities from its store, including the American Red Cross, Child's Play, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Charity: Water and World Land Trust. The Kalypso sale ends early on Thursday, April 24.
