Every Steam Machine shown so far has amounted to a small desktop PC. But what if you want to take that gaming experience on the road? Well, you might get your wish -- meet Steamboy, a handheld take on Valve's platform. On the outside, it's pretty much what you'd expect; it looks like an Steam Controller prototype (including the signature touchpads) with a 5-inch display slotted in between. Its creator (Steamboy Machine) isn't giving out many other details right now, but ittells The Escapist that the device's quad-core processor (likely either an Intel Atom or AMD A4) and 4GB of RAM "won't be as powerful" as other Steam Machines. That's not surprising given the size, however, and it should play the "majority" of titles. There are also promises of 3G mobile data and 32GB of built-in storage.

Phoronix last week tested 65 graphics cards on open source drivers under Linux and the best result was generally with the open source AMD Radeon drivers. This week they put out a 35-graphics-card comparison using the proprietary AMD/NVIDIA drivers (with the other 30 cards being too old for the latest main drivers) under Ubuntu 14.04. The winner for proprietary GPU driver support on Linux was NVIDIA, which shouldn't come as much of a surprise given that Valve and other Linux game developers are frequently recommending NVIDIA graphics for their game titles while AMD Catalyst support doesn't usually come to games until later. The Radeon OpenGL performance with Catalyst had some problems, but at least its performance per Watt was respectable. Open-source fans are encouraged to use AMD hardware on Linux while those just wanting the best performance and overall experience should see NVIDIA with their binary driver."

It's a small class of video games that still draw interest or inspire an active community 20 years after their first release — even if we're now 40 years into the era of commercial video games. Games like Doom, the several iterations of Civilization, and the Mario Brothersfranchise will probably be around and played in some form many decades hence. The X-COM family of games fits, too, having inspired various spiritual successors since its release in 1994. Now, an anonymous reader writes that the open source (GPL) " OpenXcom 1.0 is finally released, after 5224 commits, 1843 days, and 606 resolved issues since v0.9. 20 years of X-COM — XCOM oldschool lovers enjoy!"

According to an article at The Escapist, a group of hardware developers is working on a portable version of the long-rumoredSteamBox console, dubbed the SteamBoy. (.) This portable version wouldn't be as powerful as some other Steam-centric rigs, but a representative of this group says "it will be possible to play the majority of current games in Steam."While the exact hardware itself is still under wraps, the SteamBoy design should feature a Quad-Core CPU, 4GB RAM, a 32GB built-in memory card, and a 5" 16:9 touchscreen. ... The pictured SteamBoy looks like a combination of the Steam Controller and the PlayStation Vita, with two touchpads, 8 action buttons, 4 triggers, and two additional buttons to the rear. While that should certainly be as functional as a Steam Machine, we still aren't aware what the system specs will be.

The fact that Minecraft users can run their own servers has always been a bit of a double-edged sword - a blocky, low-res sword yes, but one sharp on both sides nonetheless. Players can do just about anything they want on these servers, which is great, but these players also sometimes end up breaking terms of the game's EULA, which gets developer Mojang in trouble.
"Some privately run Minecraft servers do charge for in-game items, for xp boosts, for access to certain game modes. Some of them even charge quite a lot," Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson wrote in a new blog post yesterday. "I don't even know how many emails we've gotten from parents, asking for their hundred dollars back their kid spent on an item pack on a server we have no control over."
To help protect from such accusations in the future, Mojang has created new rules regarding monetization. The rules have been detailed on Mojang's site, but what it boils down to is fewer restrictions on creating and selling in-game items and other monetized goods. Just make sure to communicate with your customers that you aren't Mojang, don't sell items that impact gameplay, and don't charge real-world money for in-game money.
Oh, and one last thing, a request straight from Persson: "Herobrine is not real please stop asking."

Today Mozilla made Firefox 30 available, a relatively minor release after the massive redesign in version 29. According to the changelog, new features include VP9 video decoding, support for Opus in WebM, and horizontal volume control for HTML5 video and audio. Developers got support for multi-line flexboxes and hang reporting for background threads. There were also a number of security fixes. The Android version of Firefox received better support for native text selection, cutting, and copying, as well as predictive lookup for Awesomebar entries. The availability of Firefox 30 coincides with the launch of Firebug 2.0, which features an updated UI and a new debugging engine called JSD2. Significant new features include JavaScript syntax highlighting and de-minifying, improved code auto-complete, and the capability to hide or show individual Firebug panels.

Vigile writes:NVIDIA announced its latest dual-GPU flagship card, the GeForce GTX Titan Z, at the GPU Technology Conference in late March with a staggering price point of $2999. Since that time, AMD announced and released the Radeon R9 295X2, its own dual-GPU card with a price tag of $1499. PC Perspective finally put the GTX Titan Z to the test and found that from a PC gamer's view, the card is way overpriced for the performance it offers. At both 2560x1440 and 3840x2160 (4K), the R9 295X2 offered higher and more consistent frame rates, sometimes by as much as 30%. The AMD card also only takes up two slots (though it does have a water cooling radiator to worry about) while the NVIDIA GTX Titan Z is a three-slot design. The Titan Z is quieter and uses much less power, but gamers considering a $1500 or $3000 graphics card selection are likely not overly concerned with power efficiency.

Alienware is no slouch when it comes to cranking out high-end gaming PCs, but its approach to Valve's Steam Machine project is a bit different. The company is looking to deliver a high-quality PC gaming experience to the living room, but the execution doesn't sound much different from the experience that's already available for other machines running Valve's made-for-TV Big Picture Mode (BPM). The rub of the Alienware Alpha series is that the diminutive PC boots directly into BPM automatically after hitting the rig's power button. The problem with that is two-fold: Big Picture Mode doesn't do the best job of identifying which games are fully controller supported, and because Valve recently delayed its in-house designed controller (which essentially is a stand-in for a mouse), OEMs not delaying hardware of their own need to come up with work arounds.

Guarding the entrance to E3 2014's South Hall is this detailed statue of a Fallen, from Bungie's upcoming "dont' call it an MMO, but it totally is" Destiny. Attendees at the show are getting their first chance to check out the game's co-op and competitive modes.
After the break we've got a fuller version of the Fallen above, along with a Sparrow bike from the game, which is apparently set up for photo ops, but wasn't first thing this morning. Yeah, we're gonna have to go back and do that!

June 9th, 2014, 21:00 Posted By: wraggster
Planetary Annihilation is a game about being a massive robot, but it's really a game about being a massive jerk. This was a problem for me when I first played the Early Access build. It's not that I wasn't willing to be a massive jerk, or that, heaven knows, I hadn't spent my entire life in preparation for that specific role. It was more that everyone else in this galaxy-spanning real-time strategy game was so much more effective when it came to being a massive jerk than I was. I was a low-level jerk in a universe of master jerks - a universe perfectly crafted for strip-mining, multi-front harassment and the crushing of small nation states. To put it another way, the problem I faced with the spiritual successor to the Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander series was that everyone who'd ever been seriously good at those games appeared to have turned up at once. When multiplayer was the only real option outside of AI skirmishes, that meant less talented players like me were going to spend a great deal of time being steamrollered. Planetary Annihilation is one of those RTS games with lots and lots of units. That's a huge part of the appeal. At least I'd be able to see them nice and clearly as they all rumbled over my smoking corpse.Galactic War mode, which has recently been added, changes a lot of this. It's the rough draft of a single-player campaign, I think, which is already good news. It's also - over the short-term goes, at least - a lot more enjoyable than I ever thought the rough draft of a single-player RTS campaign could be. Taking the likes of FTL as a major influence, Galactic War uses basic roguelike principles to achieve something very mysterious. Through permadeath and procedural escalation, it's lowering the mental cost of entry to one of the most tantalising strategy game playsets in years. Hardcore annihilators will probably be unimpressed - but wannabe annihilators may be able to get that crucial first foot on the ladder.Maps are available in a range of sizes. This is one of the smaller guys.
It's pleasingly simple stuff, too. Each campaign drops you into a freshly scrambled galactic map and sees you moving from one star system to the next, defeating AI commanders as you trundle across the cosmos, eyes bright with villainy. Crucially, you'll start off with your commander abilities pretty limited: the daunting list of units you can build in a single game of Planetary Annihilation is no longer a problem for beginners, because initially you won't be able to build very much at all.Instead, you'll have to make do with what you have and - by making do - learn how to use it properly. I love Planetary Annihilation's flame tanks, for example, partly because they're flame tanks, and partly because they look like the Nolan-era Batmobile. Thanks to Galactic War I now understand how to use them, too: they're powerful, but they need to get in close to their targets to do any damage - and they take a while to build. Pretty obvious stuff, perhaps, but it's nice to have a working knowledge of it underlined by a few sweet victories. Next, I should probably find out what these flame tanks are actually called. Each commander you defeat will provide you with new tech, which opens up your options a little. But it doesn't open them up too much, as you'll only ever have room for a limited load-out of techs as you tear up the galaxy. Occasionally, you beat a commander who grants you an entirely new load-out set-up for the next time you start over, which feels a bit like the ship designs you unlock in FTL. Speaking of FTL, it's worth restating that if you die in Galactic War, you'll scrub the whole campaign: permadeath, please try again.

Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson has released Cliffhorse, a new game about a horse which lives on cliffs. The current "early access" build can be downloaded for free from Cliffhorse.com, or you pay money for it if you have any of the internet currency Dogecoin lying around. From our five minutes with Cliffhorse this morning there doesn't seem to be much to do at present. You control a 3D horse in a world of procedurally-generated cliffs. There's also a large brown and white marble to push around. At present, the game has made 280,000 DOGE (about £60)."I can't believe this somehow ended up being my first commercial game after Minecraft," Persson wrote on Twitter. Neither can we.The creator's previous game idea, sci-fi sandbox title 0x10c, was announced in April 2012 but then canned the following year.

UPDATE 7.30pm After the reveal of Rise of the Tomb Raider during Microsoft's press conference, Square Enix's other trademark revealed earlier today has indeed been outed as a Guardian of Light sequel.Revealed on GameTrailers (thanks, NeoGAF), the title will again be an isometric affair, with four-player co-op.ORIGINAL STORY 8.35am Square Enix has trademarked two new Tomb Raider titles just days before E3, suggesting we may hear what's next for Lara Croft before the week is out.
The publisher snapped up LaraCroftandtheTempleofOsiris.com and RiseoftheTombRaider.com last Friday (thanksSuperannuation). Both URLs currently only load blank pages. We know that a sequel to last year's Tomb Raider reboot is in development at Crystal Dynamics, and is now in full swing after the launch of the studio's successful Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition. But the wording of the "Temple of Osiris" title sounds more similar to Square Enix's isometric Guardian of Light spin-off. It's possible that we'll see another small downloadable game in the series before the next big console remake.

The PC version of the next entry in EA Sports' soccer series, FIFA 15, will be powered by the publisher's Ignite Engine. The engine was announced for next-gen versions of EA's sports games just over one year ago at Microsoft's pre-E3 2013 Xbox One event, though it was left out of FIFA 14's PC version.
The tech is reportedly used by the publisher to enhance the intelligence and motion of athletes in its games thanks to "four times more calculations per second" than past efforts. The results were apparent in games like FIFA 14(seen above) and Madden 25 on PS4 and Xbox One, and now it seems PC devotees will get a version of FIFA that "will include all the same core features" on Sony and Microsoft's latest consoles. EA will have more news on FIFA 15 at its E3 2014 press event on Monday, June 9. Head past the break for the minimum and recommended PC specs for the game.

Though bugs delayed the initial release of Star Citizen's Arena Commander a la carte gameplay mode, developer Cloud Imperium Games has popped an airlock, sucking those dastardly code glitches into space like so many hapless xenomorphs.
Today's 0.8 update for Star Citizen offers access to new ships and gameplay modes. Would-be pilots can now step into the cockpit of the Roberts Space Industries Aurora, 300i and Hornet. These spacecraft can then be deployed in either the Vanduul Swarm gameplay mode or in simple, self-explanatory free flight. Additionally, this update adds multiplayer gameplay to both the Team and Battle Royale gameplay modes. All of this new content may seem daunting, but Cloud Imperium has also debuted an official "Pilot's Guide" for the new Arena Commander content.
Assuming you backed Star Citizen's overwhelmingly successful crowdfundingefforts with enough cash to earn either Alpha access or an Arena Commander pass, this new content is available for download at no additional charge.

Lian Li usually deals in computer towers, but it occasionally dabbles in incredible(or mad) desks built specifically to house desktop PCs. We even got to see one of these monstrosities in person, the top-end model above, spotted right in the epicenter of Computex, Asia's biggest tech show. Given the trend toward tablets, phones and wearables this year, it could well be the most... Computex thing here. We just wish there was some kind of award for that.
