Coming into today's Windows 10 event, we already knew a lot about Microsoft's latest and greatest. The company explained the thinking behind its new OS back in September, and the Technical Preview has been available for months. The core change comes in the form of a revitalized desktop experience -- one that puts the best of Windows 7 and 8 into a single package. Windows will also now better match the convertible devices Microsoft is pushing, with a consistent UI across all platforms, but there's a whole lot more to explore here, including some features detailed today for the first time. Let's take a closer look.

Shortly after Microsoft wrapped its epic Windows 10 keynote today, we had a chance to see the latest version of the next-gen OS running on some honest-to-goodness hardware. Using a Dell Venue Pro 11 tablet on display here at Microsoft's Redmond headquarters, we got to experience the software in a slightly more final form than when we last saw it. New features include a button for bringing the Start Screen to full-screen, a notification center, revamped Photos and Settings apps and, most importantly, Cortana voice search built right into the desktop. In addition, we got a closer look at the so-called Continuum feature that allows the UI to change depending on what device you're using (laptop, tablet, et cetera).

ScummVM takes you on an adventure in the world of Zork, with support for two new games! In Zork Nemesis: The Forbidden Lands, your task is to embark on a journey to solve the mystery of a spirit called Nemesis, and of the four alchemists it killed. On your second journey to Zork, in Zork: Grand Inquisitor, you must find three legendary objects that will restore all magic to the realm and bring about the fall of Grand Inquisitor Yannick, whose goal is to "shun magic, shun the appearance of magic, shun everything, and then shun shunning". The ScummVM Team is proud to announce that both Zork Nemesis: The Forbidden Lands and Zork: Grand Inquisitor are now playable in ScummVM using the latest daily builds, and ready for testing. As usual, all bugs should be reported to our bug tracker following our bug submission guidelines. While you play through the two games, we would also love it if you could take some screenshots for us.
So, grab your game discs and help test! If you don't own the games already, they can be purchased online at GOG.com:

An anonymous reader shares this article about what Microsoft needs to accomplish with Windows 10 in order to make gains in the mobile market and everywhere else."Later this week Microsoft will provide more details of Windows 10, most likely focusing on how the new operating system will look and feel on smartphones and tablets. According to Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft is likely to unveil a version of Windows 10 that's expected to work on Windows Phones and smaller Windows tablets running ARM and perhaps Intel processors. Microsoft will be hoping that by making it easier for developers to build for tablets and smartphones it can take some of its dominance of the desktop world and port that to the mobile world. That may help a bit, but will not in itself create the breakthrough that Microsoft wants: when it comes to mobile, Microsoft's Windows Phone is still a distant third in a two-horse race."

Microsoft has once again promised that its next iteration of Windows will offer a new dawn for PC gaming.
“I’m excited to be talking on January 21st,” Xbox boss Phil spencer said of Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 10 showcase. “We have speakers coming up talking about Windows 10 and the great work that we’re doing there.
“For the Xbox team this is the beginning of our discussion with fans about the work that we’re doing to bring gaming to the Windows 10 operating system. It’s really nice to finally be able to talk about this. We’ll continue the conversation throughout the year.
“We remain committed to gaming on console but we know that we have fans and gamers who also play on PC and phone and it’s important that we build out the features that we have, learning from what we’ve done on console and helping making Windows 10 the best operating system we’ve ever created for gamers on PCs.”
It’s a message Spencer has been pressing for a while now, with assertions having been made before Christmas that the company is finally ready to start giving gaming on PC the sort of attention it hasfrequently promised over the years but rarely delivered on.

Just days after Google angered Microsoft by releasing information about a Windows security flaw, they've now released two more. "The more serious of the two allows an attacker to impersonate an authorized user, and then decrypt or encrypt data on a Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 device. Google reported that bug to Microsoft on Oct. 17, 2014, and made some background information and a proof-of-concept exploit public on Thursday. Project Zero is composed of several Google security engineers who investigate not only the company's own software, but that of other vendors as well. After reporting a flaw, Project Zero starts a 90-day clock, then automatically publicly posts details and sample attack code if the bug has not been patched." Microsoft says there's no evidence these flaws have been successfully exploited.

Upcoming OS Windows 10 will have 'little impact' on tablet computer sales until late 2016 at the earliest, predicts analyst CCS Insight, which also believes Apple is working on a new work/play device.
"Microsoft still runs the risk of failing to convert the wide availability of cheaper Windows tablets into strong growth in unit sales before 2017," said Marina Koytcheva, CCS' director of forecasting.
"Windows 10 will take time to make its mark, and developers will need a few months to perfect applications for the new platform. We expect Windows 10 to have little impact on tablet sales before late 2016."
CCS added that tablet growth in the next couple of years depends on the performance of Windows 8 models, but did state that beyond 2016, Windows 10 will play a 'major role' in the growth of the tablet market and that Windows will increase its share of the tablet market in the next two years.
The predictions have been made as part of CCS' annual global tablet forecast, which predicts that tablet sales will double over the next four years, reaching 540 million units by 2018.
After a relatively quiet 2014, when sales rose nine per cent from 2013, CCS predicts the worldwide tablet market will grow by 28 per cent in 2015 to 283 million units.
"While tablet sales slowed in 2014, demand is expected to race ahead in 2015 with sales to first-time users being complemented by a rash of upgrades, as owners of older models replace their ageing tablets. Buyers in established markets will be joined by a new wave of users in emerging markets, to spark an increase in sales across the globe," said CCS in a statement.
Koytcheva added: "We expect Android to continue dominating the low end and midrange market, with Apple taking the lion's share of the high end. But Windows is gaining a bigger slice of the pie, albeit from a very low level, and should not be overlooked." Koytcheva continued.
CCS also believes growing enterprise demand will be of benefit for Apple too, citing the partnership with IBM and the idea that 'Apple could very well be working on a productivity-focused device that combines work and play'.
"If this proves correct, it will be another hurdle for Windows. Microsoft can ill-afford to stumble as it races to catch the tablet market leaders," CCS added.

When the world's biggest technology companies start playing rough with each other, it's normally consumers who wind up suffering. This time out, it's Windows users who are feeling the pain after Google publicly posted the details of a Windows 8.1 flawbefore Microsoft could fix it. In a public response to the disclosure, Microsoft's security chief Chris Betz says that Google's decision to publish and be damned before his company's scheduled patch was less about "principles" and more about getting one over on its rival.

Valve has finished the design of its Steam controller and is putting it into production, according to Origin PC CEO Kevin Wasielewski.
Speaking to GameSpot, Wasielewski said after a number of revamps following user feedback, Valve had settled on a final design for the controller and may showcase it during GDC.
He also said that the Steam Machine term was “pretty much dead”, as they are essentially living room PCs.

If you're a PC gamer of a certain age (cough), you've probably lamented that many of the titles you played as a kid are hard to use on modern systems without downloading emulators or waiting for special re-releases. Well, it just got a lot easier to relive your gaming glory days. The Internet Archive's growing collection of web-based retro games now includes roughly 2,400 MS-DOS classics -- you can now play cult hits likeGods or Tongue of the Fatman in your browser. This won't quite recreate the experience of sitting at the family computer, of course. The project's Jason Scott warnsthat you can't save your progress on the web, and that some games could still "fall over and die" despite attempts to include only those programs that are likely to work properly. But look at it this way: even half-functional web emulation could prevent a much-loved game from fading into obscurity.

Who knew that modern versions of Windows have nixed the option to auto-launch when a USB drive is inserted? Not a big deal unless, like [sonicdude10], you want to base a hack on the behavior. He did find a workaround and recently .
The bulk of the hack was inspired by a Sega Emulator built in a controller which he saw on Hackaday a couple of years back. It’s simply a Sega-like USB gamepad which has a hub and thumb drive internalized. The hardware changes on [sonicdude10’s] version gets rid of the old thumb drive and replaces it with one that supports U3. This is a hardware emulation trick supported by some USB drives which allows them to enumerate as CD drives instead of USB mass storage. Autoplay for CD drives is still functional in Windows.
We’ve heard a bit about U3 over the years. There was a now-dead hack covered all the way back in 2006. And we even found a comment suggesting its use for USB-based game emulators. [sonicdude10] points to two useful tools that let him customize how U3 performs. u3_tool is a multitool for tweaking how the hardware behaves, u3-autorun makes customization of the auto-launching app a snap.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has emerged the victor in Steam's best sellers chart for the last full week of 2014, beating out Far Cry 4 for the top spot during the digital distributor's ongoing end of the year sale.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Skyrim and South Park: The Stick of Truth round out the top five. Skyrim and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive specifically always seem to be somewhere on the list during Valve's biggest promotional periods, and this time was no different.
Other chart regulars to breakthrough this week include DayZ, Garry's Mod and Payday 2. Here's the full list (note that each title carried one or more significant discounts for the period):
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Far Cry 4
- Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
- Skyrim - Legendary Edition
- South Park: The Stick of Truth
- DayZ
- Arma 3
- Garry's Mod
- Payday 2
- Lords of the Fallen

Whether you think depth-sensing cameras will become the next big thing or fizzle out, one of the models that helped usher in the tech is set to be retired for good. The original Kinect for Windows will be phased out in 2015, nearly three years after Microsoft first introduced it. The sensor (which is nearly identical to the Xbox 360 model) was controversial with gamers from the get-go, but was embraced by the DIY hacking community and companies who used it for facial and motion tracking, among (many) other uses. Plenty of those folks still rely on the Kinect v1 for Windows, so Microsoft advised them to buy as many as they need, and soon, since it won't make any more after the current stock sells out. However, Microsoft will continue selling the Kinect v1 for the Xbox 360 online and in the Microsoft Store for the foreseeable future.

Google's Project Zero tracks vulnerabilities in software systems and reports them to vendors "in as close to real-time as possible" -- a noble cause, no? But what happens if said vendor then fails to push a fix within the 90-day window? Microsoft just found out: Google will go ahead and publish the bug anyway, complete with code that can be used to exploit it. A researcher found a Windows 8.1 security hole that allows lower-level users to become administrators, giving them access to sensitive server functions they'd normally have no right to. Though it remains unpatched by Microsoft, the Zero team published it several days ago -- right on schedule.
