While most potential Chromebook buyers are probably looking something small and cheap, Acer's targeting a slightly different customer with its latest entry. Its new Chromebook 15 is the first laptop running Google's browser-focused OS with a 15.6-inch screen. It's still relatively inexpensive, starting at $250, but it weighs in at a hefty 4.85 pounds. The Chromebook 15 isn't meant for people who've grown used to svelte ultraportables -- instead, it seems ideal for schools (where Chromebooks are already doing well) and older users who might appreciate a larger display. It's more a primary computer than a secondary portable PC, which is pretty much the opposite of how most Chromebooks have been positioned so far.

Internet Explorer has been a cornerstone of Windows ever since 1995, but it looks like Microsoft is ready to leave its venerable (if sometimes infamous) web browser by the wayside. ZDNet understands that a previously rumored overhaul to Internet Explorer for Windows 10, nicknamed Spartan, is actually a brand new creation. It would still use the company's own web engines, but it would be far more "light-weight" and, if you believe earlier leaks, behave more like Chrome or Firefox. The break is reportedly sharp enough that the future Windows version will keep Internet Explorer 11 around in case you need it for certain apps or features.

Discounted titles abound in Steam's latest weekly top ten results, with Dark Souls II emerging as the victor ahead of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes.
As you might have guessed or heard, Steam's Winter Sale kicked off late last week and already it's had a major impact on the chart. In fact, Don't Starve Together's Frontier Pack was the only recently released product to make the list for the past seven days.
Beyond that, it's a lot of the usual suspects from the past several months (if not more). Both Civ: Beyond Earth and Civ V Complete Edition climbed back onto the list, as did Early Access title Space Engineers.
Here’s the full list:
- Dark Souls II
- Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes
- Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
- Civilization: Beyond Earth
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Total War: Rome II - Emperor Edition
- Don't Starve Together Frontier Pack
- Space Engineers
- Civilization V: Complete Edition
- Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

The Steam Controller has already seen a couple tweaks since its initial unveiling, first by adding traditional face buttons, and later supporting an analog thumbstick. Now, it appears that the controller will also feature a directional pad, though in what capacity remains to be seen.
Game Informer uncovered an image file in the Steam Client beta that suggests the Steam Controller will be able to support a d-pad in place of its left-side haptic touch pad. We say "able to support" because this is not an image of an actual, physical controller, and nowhere is it implied that this design will be released to the exclusion of others. The d-pad could be something users install for when they want it, or it could be part of a redesigned haptic touch pad. Who knows?
Valve knows, that's who. And they haven't said anything official on the matter. However, Valve VP of Marketing Doug Lombardi told TechRadar last month that the company will have a large Steam Machines presence at GDC 2015, which begins March 2.

UK PC sales enjoyed year-on-year growth of 10.7 per cent between January and November 2014.
Analyst Context says the growth was due to XP migration (driving business sales) and budget consumer laptops, while consumer interest in tablets dropped.
PC unit sales across Western European distribution grew 15.6 per cent from January to November over the same time last year, having peaked at 21.7 per cent year-on-year in Q3 before dropping slightly to 16.9 per cent growth for the first two months of Q4.
Microsoft officially withdrew support for its popular XP OS in April, so many organisations waited until then to refresh their stock of machines. As a result, business-focused PC sales grew 29.8 per cent in Q2 2014, before slowing to single digits by early Q4 as the XP migration effect lessened.
But as business PC growth slowed in the second half of the year, consumer PC sales rebounded from the weak performance registered last year, especially in the notebooks category.
“This was partially due again to XP migration but also a need to refresh ageing home PCs and a slowdown in demand for tablets which freed up money for notebook buys”, said Marie-Christine, senior analyst at Context.
However, the biggest factor was the heavy promotion of budget laptops – especially following Microsoft’s announcement of “Windows with Bing”, which flooded the market with affordable devices.
In October and November, sales of consumer clamshell laptops rose by 16.6 per cent year-on-year, with the sub-€250 category accounting for nearly 28 per cent of sales, compared to eight per cent last year.
By comparison, tablets fared less well thanks to rising saturation in mature markets and longer-than-expected product lifecycles. Although year-on-year growth overall so far amounted to 1.8 per cent, sales were down 9.3 per cent in Q3 and 6.5 per cent in the first two months of Q4, Context said.
Elsewhere, desktop display sales held up pretty well with year-on-year growth of 10 per cent (Jan-Nov) thanks to post-XP orders and post-economic downturn investments from business buyers, and attractively priced larger sized and higher res monitors in the consumer market.

Microsoft has explored software streaming before, but it looks like the company is about to give it a second shot. The company is hiring people to work on "Arcadia," a technology that ZDNet understands will let you stream "certain apps" and games on Microsoft's platforms. It's not clear just what the Redmond crew is building, and it's not necessarily a dedicated service like PlayStation Now. It could just as easily be used for special streaming versions of key apps, or letting users fire up an app before it finishes downloading. You shouldn't expect Arcadia any time soon, whatever it is -- given that the project still has holes in its development team, it could be a while (if ever) before you're streaming the next Halo game on your Windows tablet.

Xbox head Phil Spencer will make an appearance at a special Windows 10 event in January to discuss the company's plans for Windows gaming.
The event, taking place at the firm's Redmond HQ on January 21, will see several Microsoft bigwigs offer an insight into the next major iteration of its operating system - and gaming will be a part of that conversation.
"I'll be focusing more on what we are doing on Win10 in January," commented Spencer via Twitter.
"It's time for us to talk about gaming on Windows," he added.
According to an official announcement on the event, Spencer will join a panel of execs who will "talk about the Windows 10 consumer experience".
Microsoft's Xbox business has enjoyed a successful end to 2014, withXbox One being the best-selling console in both the US and the UK in November.
This represents a welcome turnaround for Microsoft in the US. According to retail monitor NPD Group, PS4 outsold Xbox One in each of the first ten months of 2014. Prior to November 2014, Xbox One's last monthly sales victory in the US came in December 2013.

After watching early footage of Microsoft's virtual assistant Cortana in Windows 10 (below), its impending takeover of the Microsoft Borg seems inevitable. There's a lot riding on Cortana, after all. After being released in the U.S. earlier this year, it's now slowly rolling out across the globe. While an obvious response to Apple's Siri, Microsoft's devotion to Cortana is also a reminder of just how important these virtual assistants are becoming. It's as if Siri, Google Now, and Cortana will end up personifying the operating system wars.

The super-powerful Radeon R9 295x2 has been significantly discounted.
Eurogamer reports that the card, which is effectively two R9 290Xs shoved onto a single card and running in parallel, can now be had for around £490, representing a substantial saving over its £1,200 launch price and still a lot less than its more recent £700 pricing.
The R9 295x2 integrates a custom liquid cooling solution to compensate for the card’s naturally high temperatures.
The move is most likely a response to the incredibly positive reception given to Nvidia’s new GTX 970, which offers fantastic performance for as little as £250.
In fact, running two 970’s in SLI still costs less than the R9 295x2, run a lot cooler and offer similar results, although the set-up will probably fall short of AMD’s card when it comes to 4K framerates.

High-end audio enthusiasts love FLAC since it promises to preserve everything just as it was heard in the studio. Unfortunately, it isn't the most widely-supported of formats, but it appears as if it's going to get a warm embrace in Windows 10. Gabriel Aul of Microsoft's Windows Insider program tweeted out a screenshot (above) showing FLAC support in Windows Media Player, later adding that the OS is offering platform-level support - so any compatible app will now be able to play the files without a plug-in. Given that Microsoft also recently let slip that it'll support the .MKV container in its next-gen OS, it's clear that Redmond is reaching out to the inner AV geek in all of us.

Microsoft will hold an event this January to show off the new features of Windows 10,according to The Verge. Although January is traditionally dominated by the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Redmond is apparently planning a standalone event later in the month to create some buzz for the new OS away from the confines of a busy trade show.
Some facets of Windows 10 were detailed earlier this year, but next month's event will apparently be "more significant," with Microsoft laying out its plans for phones and tablets, and possibly detailing a new Xbox One dashboard update. The Verge says Microsoft should formally announce the event before the year's end.

Eager to get a truly TV-oriented gaming PC without waiting until the official Steam Machine launch in 2015? Alienware is more than happy to oblige: at long last, it'sshipping the Alpha console. You can now shell out $549 or more to get a living room-friendly Windows PC with a custom interface designed to work with an included Xbox 360 gamepad. Don't expect an ideal Far Cry 4 machine out of the box, however. Every system can play some modern titles thanks to GeForce GTX 860M graphics, but that base system comes with a modest Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive; you'll have to pay $699 if you want more memory and storage, and at least $799 if you want a faster CPU. This doesn't include a mouse and keyboard, either. Nonetheless, the Alpha could be a solid pick if a PS4 or Xbox One just won't cut it.

Mozilla has struck a deal with Yahoo to make the latter Firefox’s default search engine on desktop and mobile.
This means Yahoo will replace Google, which has been the Firefox default for a decade.
In conjunction with the announcement, Yahoo has said that it will roll out new search functions in December and add Firefox support for Do Not Track. The deal is set to last for five years.
Firefox currently has an approximate 17 per cent share of the browser market, with Yahoo – whose search is powered by Microsoft’s Bing – claiming a ten per cent share of the search market.
“Google has been the Firefox global search default since 2004. Our agreement came up for renewal this year, and we took this as an opportunity to review our competitive strategy and explore our options,” Mozilla CEO Chris Beard said.
“In evaluating our search partnerships, our primary consideration was to ensure our strategy aligned with our values of choice and independence, and positions us to innovate and advance our mission in ways that best serve our users and the Web.
“In the end, each of the partnership options available to us had strong, improved economic terms reflecting the significant value that Firefox brings to the ecosystem. But one strategy stood out from the rest.”

Black Brook. Quaint country town? Probably. It's also Intel's code name for its all-in-one PC reference design: a slender tablet-ish device with a kickstand and a handle. It's also got a full HD 20-inch display, quad mics, multitouch support and Intel's RealSense 3D camerasfor gesture-based meddling. Sound familiar? Well the reference slab was mentioned in passing back in March, but it was out in the flesh at Intel's recent Future Showcase that's currently touring Asia. It's certainly big, but the hardware's been kept at a thickness of around 20mm. Intel explained that despite the size constraints, the built-in battery will power through five hours of use, presumably including a little bit of multitouch board-gaming. The use cases are pretty similar to that gigantic 27-inch "portable" AIO we saw from Lenovo at CES in January. In this reference design however, it's all in a much slender package. Intel poses the very important question: "What is a portable AIO?" in its own intro video to the design -- we've added that after the break.
