Remember Karsten Nohl? The security researcher who discovered how to infect just about any USB device with scarily savvy malware and delivered a lengthy talk about it at this year's Black Hat conference? At the time he didn't want to share the code for his exploit, but fellow researchers Adam Caudill and Brandon Wilson figured out how to pull off some of the same tricks and they've published their findings on GitHub. Why? To try and force device manufacturers to get their security acts together.

No doubt, people love utilizing VLC's applications to play their unconventional media files, but pairing nice looks with that great functionality can go a long way. Thankfully forWindows 8.1 users, VideoLAN, the maker of VLC, has just released a completely redesigned version of the app for Microsoft's OS. The application now features a much brighter, cleaner and polished look than on previous iterations, making it look flatter and more in line with Windows 8's Modern UI. As WinBeta points out, the revamped VLC player is designed only for the tile-based side of the platform, meaning it won't work with that traditional Windows desktop you love so much.

Still confused about why the new version of Windows is 10, instead of 9? Beyond the loosely defined numbering schemes that are all too common in tech (how many iPhones did it take to get to 6?), a note posted to Reddit could provide an answer. Reddit user cranbourne claims to be a Microsoft developer, and cites rumors that early testing with the name "Windows 9" ran into problems with code some third-party developers used as a shortcut to detect when apps are running on Windows 95 or Windows 98. The problem, is that it wasn't written to actually check for the extra character. Whatever the real reason is Microsoft isn't saying, and it gave Gizmodo a vague non-answer about the new name so your conspiracy theory is as good as ours (we think they were avoiding a Tolkien nine rings of power reference, and we have evidence to prove it.)

Want to wirelessly share video from your Surface without worrying about whether or not your TV can handle it? Microsoft now has you covered. Its simply titled (and previously hinted at) Wireless Display Adapter can beam content from Miracast-capable Windows 8.1 PCs and Android devices to any HDMI-equipped screen. Since you're just mirroring your output, you can easily watch movies and presentations on a grander scale without requiring explicit app support, like you do with Chromecast. The add-on should reach North America in October for $60 -- a fairly reasonable outlay if you want to avoid tethering yourself to the living room set.

We recently added support for a new game, Sfinx, in ScummVM, and we can now proudly announce that it is ready to be tested. Thanks to the original developers, this game is now freeware and can be downloaded on our web site. And in addition to the original Polish version we are also proposing an English version! This version is not final, so we are looking for people who speak English and/or Polish and who are not afraid of spotting spelling and grammar mistakes in the texts of the game (English only), while also looking for different bugs, glitches and other evil things. To sum up: We need testers!
Grab our daily build and the data files of the game, and go for it!
You can report bugs on our bug tracker following our bug submission guidelines. If you have the time for it, screenshots are also very welcome!

September 18th, 2014, 00:13 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft’s new operating system Windows 9 is set to be shown off on September 30th for the first time.
The computer giant has sent out email invites to a Windows event which will take place in San Francisco, where senior execs Joe Belfiore and Terry Myerson will talking about the future of Windows.
The email invites state: "Join us to hear about what's next for Windows and the enterprise."
A preview version of Windows 9 is expected to be shown off at the event, and users could also have the opportunity to try out the new OS.
This date follows reports which claimed Microsoft would be holding an event towards the end of September or early October.
This week more video footage was leaked purportedly showing the Windows 9 desktop and menu in action.
Images of the mini Start menu were also previously leaked.
The OS will allegedly also feature an early version of Siri-rival Cortana as well as several UI changes. An online distribution method is also said to be included, which will bind a license to a user’s individual PC and activate once they connect to the Microsoft Store.
It is still not clear whether Windows 9 will be known as Windows 9. However, rumours suggest it has been dubbed Windows Threshold.
Once the OS has been finalised, it is expected to launch during April 2015.

PC gaming may be the forgotten sector of the modern PC market, but it’s also the most financially important.
That’s according to Green Man Gaming’s Darren Cairns who told an audience at Games Retail 2020 today that, according to Juniper Research, PC, handheld and console revenues will hit $43.2bn by 2019.
Intel’s most recent financials claim that there are now 711m PC gamers worldwide.
Furthermore, DFC reckons the PC games market will reach revenues of $26bn by the end of the year, with JPR adding that PC gaming hardware revenues will hit $23bn by 2017, across pre-assembled systems and self-builds.
The mainstream sector will only account for 26 per cent of this, with enthusiasts still the more important segment at 44 per cent.
Beyond the numbers there are many other potential advantages for the consumer with PC gaming, too. The open platform means that PC remains the home of innovation and creativity in games development, and a high number of dedicated PC gamers also own one or more consoles, meaning there’s crossover potential for success game makers too.
Add to that the fact that PC gaming technology is leaps and bounds ahead of consoles, with consumers able to tailor their machines specifically to their needs – and with a big enough spend achieve resolutions and performance that obliterate even next-gen machines.
So why the lack of an E3 PC keynote? “Because no-one owns it,” one audience member replied. And that’s true. The PC sector is hugely fragmented, with companies such as Steam, Origin, uPlay and Battle.net all vying to share.
All of which could possibly change were Steam to take to the LA stage, of course.
With this seemingly not on the horizon, though, how should developers and publishers go about addressing and discovering those 711m PC gamers?
Cairns says that data will drive the evolution of retail. This starts with the gamer – their location and membership data – and in turn their browsing habits and how they use any particular retailer’s website. Buying patterns are a key factor, but don’t necessarily reflect usage. More informative are their connections with other on social networks, which is very revealing about the games that interest them and their future choices.

Whether you're going to miss the Charms bar or not, users likely have a list of things they love (or loath) about Windows 8. We've already had a few hints at what to expect in the next version -- the classic start menu for example. Now, we have some videos (below) purportedly showing the Windows 9 in action (or, a fairly complete build of it, at least). Some of the more interesting features shown include a revised, (unified) Notification Center, a demonstration of how multi-desktop will work, and of course, that beloved start menu. Naturally, all usual caveats apply (things could change, and probably will), but, as Windows 9 creeps further out of the shadows, we're getting a clearer picture of what sort of user experience we can expect.

Once upon a time, arcades were all the rage. You could head down to your local arcade with a pocket full of quarters and try many different games. These days, video arcades are less popular. As a result, many old arcade games are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are almost like the artifacts of an ancient age. They are slowly left to rot and are often lost or forgotten with time. Enter, MAME.
MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) is a software project, the goal of which is to protect gaming history by preventing these arcade machines from being lost or forgotten. The MAME emulator currently supports over 7000 titles, but there are still more out there that require preservation. The hackers who work on preserving these games are like the digital Indiana Jones of the world. They learn about lost games and seek them out for preservation. In some cases, they must circumvent security measures in order to accurately preserve content. Nothing as scary as giant rolling boulders or poison darts, but security nonetheless.
Many of the arcade cabinets produced by a publisher called NMK used a particular sound processor labeled, “NMK004″. This chip contains both a protected internal code ROM and an unprotected external ROM that controls the sound hardware. The actual music data is stored on a separate unprotected EEPROM and is different for each game. The system reads the music data from the EEPROM and then processes it using the secret data inside the NMK004.
The security in place around the internal ROM has prevented hackers from dumping its contents for all this time. The result is that NMK games using this chip have poorly emulated sound when played using MAME, since no one knows exactly how the original chip processed audio. [trap15] found it ridiculous that after 20 years, no one had attempted to circumvent the security and dump the ROM. He took matters into his own hands.
The full story is a bit long and contains several twists and turns, but its well worth the read. The condensed version is that after a lot of trial and error and after writing many custom tools, [trap15] was able to finally dump the ROM. He was able to accomplish this using a very clever trick, speculated by others but never before attempted on this hardware. [trap15] exploited a vulnerability found in the unprotected external ROM in order to trick the system into playing back the protected internal ROM as though it were the sound data stored on the EEPROM. The system would read through the internal ROM as though it were a song and play it out through the speakers. [trap15] recorded the resulting audio back into his PC as a WAV file. He then had to write a custom tool to decode the WAV file back into usable data.
[trap15] has released all of his tools with documentation so other hackers can use them for their own adventures into hardware hacking. The project was a long time in the making and it’s a great example of reverse engineering and perseverance.

Slowly but surely, we're starting to get a clearer idea of what the next version of Windows will look like. Microsoft already teased a classic-style Start Menu, while ZDNet's usually-reliable Mary Jo Foley has reported that the Charms Bar might be removed. Today, we're sifting through what might be the biggest single leak yet -- a collection of 20 screenshots from the German sites ComputerBase and WinFuture. In these images, reportedly from the "Windows Technical Preview" expected to arrive this fall, we can see not just the Start Menu, but a refined Taskbar, with a new search icon located next to the Start button.

Google promised that Android apps would eventually make their way to Chrome OS, and, well, here they are - the search giant announced that the first batch has just gone live in the Chrome Web Store. We knew that Vine and Evernote were on the short list of Android apps to make the leap, but there's no sign of Flipboard yet. Instead, we also got startup Duolingo's excellent language learning app and something called Sight Words, a tool to help little ones identify and recognize words (aww). Four apps may not seem like much to get worked up over, (especially since Duolingo and Evernote work just fine in a web browser) but it's just a start. Google says it'll work on getting more developers to use its App Runtime for Chrome "over the coming months," so don't go expecting a full-on Android invasion of Chrome OS any time soon.

If you've been dabbling in 4K video recording, you probably know that most SD cards won't cut it; you'll be thankful if you have enough space for a wedding video, let alone amagnum opus. SanDisk may have a solution for that space problem in its new, extra-capacious 512GB Extreme Pro SDXC card. It's fast enough (95MB/s) to shoot interruption-free 4K, but also has more than enough storage for a day's worth of movies and high-speed photography. Capture 60Mbps video on Sony's AX100, for example, and you could theoretically keep going for almost 19 hours. You're going to pay dearly for all that headroom, though. The 512GB card sells for a whopping $800 -- unless video production is your bread and butter, you're probably better off "settling" for the Extreme Pro's 128GB or 256GB variants.

If you've wanted an affordable 8-inch Windows tablet from ASUS, your only recent option has been the VivoTab Note 8. While that's no doubt a fine machine, you might not want to pay extra for pen input if you don't need it. Thankfully, you don't have to any more; ASUS has quietly launched the VivoTab 8, a close cousin to the Note 8 that drops the stylus and digitizer. In many ways, it's now a MeMO Pad 8 running Microsoft's software instead of Google's. You'll still find a 1.33GHz Atom processor, a 1,280 x 800 display and a 2-megapixel front camera, but a few things have switched up to accommodate Windows while keeping the price in check. The newer slate has a larger 32GB of expandable storage and ships with 2GB of RAM in some regions instead of the MeMO Pad's 1GB, but it drops back to a 2-megapixel rear cam -- sorry, you won't be capturing any photographic masterpieces here. ASUS hasn't revealed any launch plans yet. However, it's safe to presume that the VivoTab 8 will save you at least some cash versus the Note 8's original $330 sticker.

D2X-XL v1.17.83 is released. D2X is a port of Descent 2 to OpenGL. It is an open source project and has received a lot of enhancements compared to Descent 2. My work on this project would not have been possible if hadn't been for the people who initially implemented the OpenGL and SDL code in D2X, so my thanks to them: It is for them that we can still play this great game on modern hardware. My thanks also to the many people who have provided input for this project, be it in the form of bug reports, great ideas, logos, encouragement, or other.
Descent 2 is a pretty old game, and further development has slowed down; so there are a few issues - some still stemming from the original Descent 2 - that have never been adressed or solved in D2X.
As I still like Descent 2 pretty much, I was always looking for a way to get rid of the things that plagued me most in Descent 2. Getting hold of the D2X source files and being able to create a MS Visual C++ 6 project for D2X finally enabled me to fix these annoyances.
D2X-XL v1.17.83 Changelog:
Improved: Missile smoke trail now gets emitted from a missile's rear and not its center anymore
Improved: The explosion blast effect will now collapse back to its origin at the end of its life time

Thanks to hidden anti-piracy measures, those who pirate The Sims 4 will find themselves staring at a pixelated mess instead of the colorful, virtual life simulation, reports Player Attack.
The blurring appears harmless enough at first. When a Sim steps into the shower or otherwise disrobes, the game censors the virtual nudity by applying a blob of thick pixels. Normally this would vanish once the Sim is dressed, but EA's anti-piracy measures ensure that any illicitly obtained copies of the game instead cause the censorship blur to expand, eventually covering the entire screen. The end result is the messy swirl of pixelated colors that you can see above.
The discovery of EA's clever anti-piracy strategies has not gone unnoticed by pirates, many of whom have taken to the game's official forums (link may not work as EA's forums have been displaying errors all morning) to complain about their "broken" copy of the game. Despite the complaints, EA tells Joystiq that it has no plans to aid those players unable to enjoy their pirated copies of The Sims 4. Instead, the publisher urges affected players to purchase their own copy of the game which should lack the telltale pixelation.

Have you been holding out for a price cut on the Surface 2 before taking the plunge? You now have your chance. Microsoft has slashed $100 off the price of its second-gen Windows RT tablet, regardless of the model you buy. It now costs as little as $349 for a base 32GB WiFi edition, while splurging on the 64GB LTE slate is slightly more reasonable at $579. Just be aware that the folks in Redmond aren't doing this out of the kindness of their hearts. The Surface 2 is nearly a year old -- Microsoft is very likely clearing inventory, whether it's ahead of a new model or just to focus more attention on the Surface Pro 3.
