Steam has surpassed 125 million active users and is home to more than 4,500 games, Valve has announced.
The figure is a dramatic rise from the 100m users announced in September 2014, meaning the digital store has been picking up some 5m users each month.
Fresh figures from the Steam stats page also show the number hit a new peak record on Sunday, reaching 8.935,330 concurrent users.

Google's already making sure you don't download malware, and now it's expanding itsSafe Browsing initiative. In addition to preventative warnings prior to downloading, the Chrome browser will now throw a red flag (pictured after the break) before visiting a site that may encourage you to install any malicious software. Search listings are getting marks for sites that might contain nefarious programs as well, and Mountain View says that it's actively disabling Google Ads that "lead to sites with unwanted software." The search giant is urging site owners to install its Webmaster Tools to help keep on top of any possible issues with a site pushing bad software to visitors, and says this'll aid with the resolution process should that happen. Again, it's Google working to keep its "don't be evil" reputation in line and making the internet a safer place for everyone. After all, even the most web savvy among us have probablydownloaded malware before at some point.

Intel isn't the only chip giant championing battery life over performance this year. AMD has revealed Carrizo, a processor range that's focused heavily on extending the running time of performance-oriented laptops. While there will be double-digit boosts to speed, there's no doubt that efficiency is the bigger deal here. The new core architecture (Excavator) is just 5 percent faster than its Kaveri ancestor, but it chews up 40 percent less energy at the same clock rate -- even the graphics cores use 20 percent less juice.

Microsoft knows that you probably don't trust it completely with your sensitive info, especially if you live outside the US. What assurances will you get that you won't bespied on, or sold down the river? The company thinks it has an answer: it just became the first big service provider to adopt a new international standard for privacy in the cloud. The guideline requires that Microsoft give its business clients (and by extension, you) guarantees about what happens to online data. It'll only handle personal info according to instructions, makes it clear where that data is going, enforces strict limits on public use and promises that content won't be used for ads. Importantly, the measure also requires that Microsoft give a heads-up about government requests for data whenever the law allows.

In this month's Patch Tuesday, Microsoft has released nine security bulletins to address 56 unique vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Server software. Of the nine security bulletins, three are rated Critical in severity, and among these three is one that addresses a years-old design flaw that can be exploited remotely to grant attackers administrator-level privileges to the targeted machine or device. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights."Reader jones_supa writes, though, that the most recent patch rollout came with a bug of its own, since corrected: the company apparently botched a rollup update for Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime: "There is an issue with KB3001652: many users are reporting that it is locking up their machines while trying to install it. It does not seem that this patch is doing any other damage though, such as bricking the operating system. These days Microsoft appears to be reacting quickly to this kind of news as it looks like the patch has already been pulled from Windows Update."

February 10th, 2015, 23:03 Posted By: wraggster
The acceleration of tablet power will broaden the market appeal of core game, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen has said.
"What gets us the most excited is the power, the computing power, of mobile devices and the speed at which that's growing," he told the 2015 Technology, Internet & Media Conference, as reported by GameSpot.
"What that might mean is that a tablet, three or four years from now, has more power than what a typical console has. And that will open up a whole new set of people to console-style games that are much more immersive, much deeper, much more character-driven than simply a static mobile game that you might play for a small burst of time while you're waiting for the bus.
"So we're looking for ways that we can essentially blend those two models to have a more immersive but movable game experience. Could be in your living room, could be on the bus, or it could be in a friend's house. Much more portable than it is today. And that for us is a huge opportunity."
EA execs have been making a lot of noise about the potential change for the core games market in recent weeks.
Last week chief creative officer Richard Hilleman said that core games remain too hard to learn, alienating a large part of their potential market. The week prior CEO Andrew Wilson speculated that“free-to-try” could become an important model for the console games market.

February 10th, 2015, 23:02 Posted By: wraggster
An early look at Microsoft’s DirectX 12 graphics API has shown that AMD graphics cards – and potentially Xbox One – could be in line for a significant performance boost.
An analysis over at Anandtech shows that AMD’s flagship R9 290X GPU enjoyed a near 600 per cent boost from 8.3 frames per second using DirectX 11 to 49.2 fps using DirectX 12 on Stardock’s Star Swarm demo. Nvidia’s GTX 980 enjoyed a 250 per cent performance jump to 66.8 fps.
These gains far exceed the performance gains offered by AMD’s own Mantel API, the reception to which has been somewhat muted – a fact not helped by its limited support by developers.
An important thing to note here is that while DirectX 12 will be exclusive to Windows 10 on PC (although Windows 7 and 8 users will be able to upgrade for free), it will be coming to Xbox One. And Xbox One, much like PS4, uses AMD graphics technology.
There are of course a host of factors to consider meaning that Xbox One is unlikely to ever see performance gains in the hundreds of per cent, but a significant graphical performance upgrade still seems very possible.
DirectX 12 will roll out later this year.

Think your 4K laptop or 5K iMac is hot stuff? If specification developers have their way, both will soon be old hat. The Video Electronics Standards Association has unveiledEmbedded DisplayPort 1.4a, a new format that lets all-in-ones and laptops use 8K screens (7,680 x 4,320, if you want to be exact). The technology uses compression to squeeze more data into the video feed, and it can divide displays into two or four segments to help the pipeline cope with all those extra pixels.

IHS analyst and director of the firm’s games department Piers Harding Rolls shares his view on Microsoft’s newly unveiled video games plans for Windows 10
Microsoft holds a unique platform role and is best positioned to bridge the community divide between core PC and console gamers.
With the ambition to drive hundreds of millions of Windows users to Windows 10 through its free upgrade offer, and having the Xbox app native to all versions of the new OS, the company is positioning itself to deliver on this ambition.
While Windows 10 is being built to address all consumer device and screen categories, Microsoft’s limited market share in the mobile market means that the new Xbox app’s most significant addressable gaming market will be PC and console fans.
Gaming platform ecosystems on mobile are well established, but there remains an opportunity to bridge communities across desktop/laptop PC and console to take a more comprehensive role in these specialist segments of the games market.
The fact the new Xbox app is universal for Windows so the industry can apply the same Xbox Live API to all Windows platforms including the Xbox One.
These efficiencies will naturally make this latest version Windows more attractive to the industry.
Many, such as Valve with its Steam Machines, are attempting to bring PC gaming to the living room. But Microsoft is coming from the opposite direction, using its console strengths to reinforce its role in Windows gaming – moving from the standardised console market to the more open world of PC gaming.

It's been more than 10 years since Mozilla released version 1.0 of Firefox, one of their first steps in their mission to 'preserve choice and innovation on the Internet'. Firefox was instrumental in shattering the web monoculture, but the last few years of development have left users uninspired. "Their goal was never to create the most popular browser in the world, or the one with the best UX, or the one with the most features, or the one with the best developer mode. ... It would be foolish to say a monoculture will never arise again (Google are making some scary moves with Chrome-only web applications). But at this point in time while Chrome is the ascendant browser (largely at the expense of Firefox), Mozilla’s ability to impact the web in general is greatly reduced." Perhaps it is time to move on to the next challenge — ensuring there is a strong Thunderbird to help preserve a free and open email ecosystem.

Razer has no plans to launch its latest Razer Blade gaming laptop in the UK or Europe right now.
However, the laptop could get a limited release in the UK and Europe later this year, but there is currently 'no timescale on that', a Razer spokesperson has told PCR.
The new device is instead available to order online direct from Razer Store in the US, Canada, Singapore and Hong Kong, and will be available in select Microsoft Stores in the US from February 16th.
In March the laptop will launch in China, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, UAE, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Russia.
With most sales going direct or through Microsoft Stores, if the Blade does launch in the UK it's likely the majority of retailers will be unable to stock it.
Mike Fethers, senior games buyer at The Hut Group, asked on Twitter whether retailers will be able to stock them, and Rich Marsden from Razer's UK distributor VIP Computers confirmed not.

The free Windows 10 upgrade could be a real revenue earner for PC retailers, some store owners have told PCR, while others are sceptical that it may dent sales of new systems.
Reaction has been largely mixed from independent tech retailers, multiples, system builders and etailers.
Many store owners and buyers told PCR that Microsoft offering a free Windows 10 upgrade for a year to existing users of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 will give them a new revenue stream, as it will allow retailers to sell upgrades/OS migrations to their customers - or sell them a new machine and then offer Windows 10 as a free upgrade.
“I think it's great," Utopia Computers' director Craig Hume said. "Initially we thought we’d make less money without the sales of the software itself, but actually we can get the upgrade labour. So we can advertise to say ‘we’ll make sure you’re all your pictures and documents move across to Windows 10, but there will be a charge for that’. So retailers have got quite a good opportunity with Windows 10."
Dabs.com product manager Duncan Rutherford added: "Any release of a new Windows product is exciting news. In this instance where it’s free for one year for existing users, it does pose a challenge for operating system sales, however it gives us the chance to sell hardware now that will be eligible for upgrade – while still having the chance to sell Windows 10 systems complete to customers upon release."
Another retailer, taking part in PCR's annual retail survey anonymously, added: "Having that OS transition is a good thing and I think we'll be able to build our server and support business. I think the advantage of it is that it gives you a dialogue with the customer."
Windows 10: How will the free upgrade affect retailers? However, other retailers weren't best pleased with the news.
"So basically Microsoft will hurt those that took the flack last year with Office 365, despite how they like to make out how they want to increase the bonds between them and the indies," commented Paul Winnie Cutts from Daycall Components. "I'm disgusted with the treatment to the indies. Shame on Microsoft."
Another indie added anonymously: "The free Windows 10 will dent sales as it doesn't give anyone an incentive to buy a new laptop."
One store owner told PCR: "It's very worrying, as Microsoft seem to want to control all customer contacts. Although they are not charging for the OS, after the first year they will, and this will mean customers returning to Microsoft - not us as a retailer."
Another added that while they may 'lose margin' in the short term, in the long run it will benefit their business as Windows 10 will help drive renewed interest in PCs, and bring more customers to them overall.
A large number of retailers said they don't think the free Windows 10 upgrade will affect them, or that it is too early to predict what will happen once the OS launches later this year.
YoYoTech MD CK commented: "There’s no concrete evidence around how it will work yet, and how system integrators will work with it. But with it being free, I also think it will help get rid of pirated copies."
"Let's see what happens after the first year - if and how it will be charged," one indie commented.

Remember those universal Office apps Microsoft spent some time demoing a couple weeks back? Well, as of today, a trio of them are available as part of the Windows 10 Technical Preview. The three workhorses -- Word, Excel, and PowerPoint -- can be accessed on desktops, laptops and tablets running the preview version of Redmond'supcoming operating system, and in the weeks to come, phones will be able to join in. If you'll recall, the so-called universal apps are designed to wrangle touch gestures and properly equip mobile devices, insuring a consistent experience across your Windows-driven gadget arsenal. If you're itchin' to give 'em a go, you can request access right here.

Malware targeting gamers usually tends to revolve around the games themselves, such as fake copies of a hot new shooter or deceptive in-game items. Well, it looks like these attackers are mixing up their strategy: Malwarebytes Labs has found spyware spoofing an in-game voice chat app. At first, it steers you to a fake website offeringRazer's Comms software. If you're eager enough to click the Windows download link, you instead get a script that tries to harvest your logins and other sensitive info. A cursory glance suggests that it's (poorly) written by Russian cybercriminals renting their services.
