Leaked benchmark tests of Intel’s upcoming Skylake CPUs suggest users can expect performance improvements of around 15 per cent compared to current processors.
PC Gamer reports that the Skylake i7-6700K benches at around 15 per cent ahead of the existing Haswell i7-4790K. That’s pretty much in line with the sort of annual gains successive Intel models have shown in the last few years.
There will be a total of 10 SKUs spread across the new i5 and i7 lines, with all models supporting both DDR3 and DDR5 RAM. There will be four power-efficient 35W T models and two 95W K versions – the latter of which will support overclocking.
Intel also seems to have altered its standard naming, opting for the monikers i7-6700K and i5-6600K as opposed to the expected 6770K and 6600K.
The first of Intel’s Skylakes are expected to launch later this year.

April 29th, 2015, 21:24 Posted By: wraggster
The founder of one of the world’s largest mod communities has argued that paid mods may be a vital revenue source for games in an increasingly hostile digital marketplace.
“Our reluctance to pay for anything digital, is forcing the music, movie and games industries to adapt,” ModDB founder Scott Reismanis said. “In the case of music and movies, they have turned to streaming with ads and subscriptions. In the case of games (especially F2P and mobile) we have tried many ugly ideas such as pay to play, pay to win and ads, but all of these ideas punish the player.
“So in comes DLC and add-on packs to the rescue, as a way to generate revenue while giving something back to the player. But even DLC is often viewed as a negative, as content that should have been shipped in the original game… so what’s left? MODS!
“The numbers don’t lie, every good game that has mods has abnormally high user engagement and longevity. As Team Fortress 2 shows, revenue skyrocketed when user-generated content was sold. As we run towards a F2P content based economy, the significance of this cannot be understated, as publishers explore new ways of making money (which doesn’t have to be a bad thing).
“It is amazing that modding has never been stronger than it is today, and Valve is a big reason for that. We need to be understanding that growth may come at a cost, and to approach all change with an open mind. Doing so as a community and our voice will continue to be heard.”
Valve earlier this week removed the option for mod creators to charge for Steam mods just days after debuting the feature.
Unrest at Valve’s reversal is cropping up elsewhere online, too. Skyrim modder Edhelsereg admitted that his “reputation may be hurt” by speaking out in favour of paid mods, but did so regardless.
“After what I have seen over the past few days, it will probably be a very long time before I step back into the modding community,” he said. “Since my first mod was released on the Skyrim Workshop my mods have recieved over 200,000 individual downloads and two donations. That means 0.001 per cent of users donated.
“And to all the people who say a donate button will help. I'd like to talk about the workshop ratings system. On every mod page there are two buttons that you can press (whether you have subscribed to the mod or not) that contribute to a mod's overall rating. Giving a thumbs up is optional, but very much encouraged by creators. Most users simply do not rate.
“My most popular mod has been downloaded by over 70,000 people of which less than 1.5k of them have rated it. That means 98 per cent of users didn't take the time to rate the mod (and that is above the average for most mods on the Workshop), an act which takes one click, and costs nothing to do.
“My main issue is that MOST MOD USERS DO NOT APPRECIATE WHAT IT TAKES TO PRODUCE A MOD. I have spent over 2,000 hours working on my mods. Ask yourself, have you ever worked on any one thing, day after day, for hundreds, let alone thousands of hours? Before you start assigning value to someone's work, you should have an understanding of what was required to make it.
“The statement that MODDER’S SHOULD NOT BE COMPENSATED is so unbelievably disrespectful to the creators. As a creator I feel totally underappreciated, unwanted, and vilified by the community. Those who have been so negative have frightened off both veteran modders and potential new ones.
“Regardless of your position, the response to this development has been embarrassing and shameful. I truly believe that all reasons aside, the primary reason people don't like this is because they DON'T WANT TO SPEND MONEY. It's not a bad thing, it's just the truth. It's understandable. Given the option get something for a price or for free (without negative consequences) people will choose free every time. I believe that there is a consequence. The dignity of the mod creators.”
Kotaku reports that a petition has even been created urging modders to stop work altogether to “boycott eh player community” as “they are fairweather friends”.

Microsoft's Terry Myerson confirmed onstage at Build what many of us suspected in the hours leading up to the event -- the company's going to make it easier for developers to bring Android apps into the Windows Store. To make this possible, Myers said, Windows phones "will include an Android subsystem" meant to play nice with the Java and C++ code developers have already crafted to run on a rival's operating system. Turns out, that's not the only dev-friendly coup we're seeing today: iOS developers can compile their Objective C code right from Microsoft's Visual Studio, and turn it into a full-fledged Windows 10 app. This, frankly, is huge. With one announcement, drawn out of the course of a few minutes, Microsoft may have just changed its mobile trajectory completely.

One of the reasons some people didn't like Windows 8 was that it seemed to include two versions of Windows: Live Tiles and the desktop, with touch-friendly apps kept far away from traditional x86 programs. With Windows 10, Microsoft seems to be trying hard to make the user experience feel less jarring, and now, it's taking things a step further with the Windows Store. Once home exclusively to touch-friendly, "Metro-style" apps, it will now house a mix of Win32 and .NET apps as well, along with server-hosted web applications. The result is that users will now have a one-stop shop for all manner of Windows downloads. From a developer standpoint, meanwhile, all of these apps will be able to take advantage of the same Windows Store platform -- that means updates are delivered the same way, and developers can also enable in-app purchases, as they would in any other Windows Store download.

After months of waiting, Microsoft finally has a proper name for Windows 10's brand new web browser: forget Project Spartan, and meet Microsoft Edge. It still has the same flat, minimalist look you saw at the start of the year, as well as clever features like Cortana voice commands and annotation for websites. You'll also get a new tab page that shows both other websites as well as handy info like weather, and Microsoft is now making it easier for developers to port extensions from other browsers (such as Chrome). Yes, the folks in Redmond are largely using the Edge name to distance their latest browser from Internet Explorer's less than stellar reputation, but you have to admit that the new branding is decidedly catchier.

When Microsoft debuted its Windows Holographic software and HoloLens headset a few months back, Windows 10 apps were mentioned as a possibility. Well, at BUILD 2015 today, the folks in Redmond offered a look at Windows 10 universal apps in holographic action. During the on-stage demo, apps could be placed on walls or floated in space, and resized based on the user's needs -- something we'd only seen in videos up to this point. Of course, this means that users in different locations can collaborate on 3D models without having to be in the same room. Any Windows 10 app can be used as a hologram with the headset, so getting work done at a place other than your desk will soon be a possibility.

Grand Theft Auto V held tight to the top spot on Steam's weekly best selling products chart, but Killing Floor 2 arguably had a better showing with two of its products finishing in the top three.
Killing Floor 2 took the runner-up spot, while the game's Digital Deluxe Edition finished right behind in third. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Skyrim's Legendary Edition round out the top five.
On the opposite side of the list, we see some titles in danger of slipping off the top ten, including Cities: Skylines in eighth, Elite: Dangerous in ninth and Mortal Kombat X in tenth.
Here's the full list:
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Killing Floor 2
- Killing Floor 2 Digital Deluxe Edition
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Skyrim Legendary Edition
- Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Premium Edition
- The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited
- Cities: Skylines
- Elite: Dangerous
- Mortal Kombat X

Last month, Microsoft began talking about PlayReady 3.0, which adds hardware DRM to secure 4K movies. Intel, AMD, Nvidia, and Qualcomm are all building it in, according to Microsoft. "Older generations of PCs used software-based DRM technology. The new hardware-based technology will know who you are, what rights your PC has, and won’t ever allow your PC to unlock the content so it can be ripped. ... Unfortunately, it looks like the advent of PlayReady 3.0 could leave older PCs in the lurch. Previous PlayReady technology secured content up to 1080p resolution using software DRM—and that could be the maximum resolution for older PCs without PlayReady 3.0." Years back, a number of people got upset when Hollywood talked about locking down "our content." It looks like we may be facing it again for 4K video.

The first release candidate of Linux 4.1 is now available. Linus noted, "The merge window is pretty normal in terms of what got merged too. Just eyeballing the size, it looks like this is going to fit right in — while 4.0 was a bit smaller than usual, 4.1 seems to be smack dab in the middle of the normal range for the last couple of years." There are numerous new features in Linux 4.1, like Xbox One controller force feedback support, better Wacom tablet support, Intel Atom SoC performance improvements, Radeon DisplayPort MST support, EXT4 file-system encryption, ChromeOS Lightbar support, and ACPI for 64-bit ARM, among other additions. However, KDBUS wasn't accepted for Linux 4.1.

Microsoft has announced a new feature for Windows 10 called Device Guard, which aims to give administrators full control over what software can or cannot be installed on a device. "It provides better security against malware and zero days for Windows 10 by blocking anything other than trusted apps—which are apps that are signed by specific software vendors, the Windows Store, or even your own organization. ... To help protect users from malware, when an app is executed, Windows makes a determination on whether that app is trustworthy, and notifies the user if it is not. Device Guard can use hardware technology and virtualization to isolate that decision making function from the rest of the Windows operating system, which helps provide protection from attackers or malware that have managed to gain full system privilege." It's intended to be used in conjunction with traditional anti-virus, not as a replacement.

Microsoft has launched a new Windows 10 technical preview build for PC ahead of the OS' supposed launch in July.
Build 10061 is now available, bringing with it new mail and calendar apps as well as developments to the user interface including the taskbar.
The apps feature a toggle to allow the user to quickly move between their email and calendar. Mail includes customisable swipe gestures, letting you swipe right or left to take actions like delete, flag, move or mark as read/unread.
Both the new mail and calendar apps support Office 365, Exchange, Outlook.com, Gmail, IMAP, POP and more.
The build also introduces a new black system theme across the Start menu, Taskbar and Action Center. The first two now have customisable transparency and the Start menu can be resized.
The Taskbar has also been optimised for tablets. Entering 'Tablet Mode' causes the Start button, Cortana and the Task View buttons to all grow in size and space out to be more touchable. There's also the option to boot directly into Tablet Mode.
Task View has been refined, including the window icons, the close buttons and the thumbnails.
The build also lets users create as many virtual desktops as they like.
"Thank you for your continued help as Windows Insiders and we hope you enjoy this build. As always, keep the problem reports and suggestions coming by using the Windows Feedback app," said Microsoft's Gabe Aul.

"Well, my opinion is Jedi are evil." That's how Raph Koster, creative director of the 2003 MMO Star Wars Galaxies, begins discussing the problems that faced his design team back in the day. Jedi were too powerful, too desirable and too canonically rare to be successfully implemented in Star Wars Galaxies as a standard class -- and this was precisely why so many fans ditched the game when its third major patch added Jedi as a starting character. Before launch, the Star Wars Galaxies creative team obsessed over ways to implement playable Jedi into the game, and one solution stands out to Koster as "the crazy idea I still wish we had done." Inspired by Diablo's Hardcore mode, it was a system "that effectively gave a different way to play the game. A method that kept Jedi rare, powerful, and yet allowed everyone a shot," Koster writes. This solution was, in a word, permadeath.

Microsoft’s launch of Windows 10 could be sooner than we thought, which may take place in July.
During AMD’s latest earnings call, according to AMD’s president and CEO Dr. Lisa Su, Windows 10 will launch at the end of July.
Su said, "With the Windows 10 launch at the end of July, we are watching sort of the impact of that on the back-to-school season, and expect that it might have a bit of a delay to the normal back-to-school season inventory build-up."
Microsoft has already revealed that the software will arrive this summer in 190 countries and 111 languages, but no set date has been announced.
However, rumours have surfaced that the tech giant has chosen a time of year to target back-to-school PC buyers.
Windows 10 will also be free for a year as an upgrade for users with Windows 7, 8.1 or Windows Phone 8.1.

If you have no choice but to use an XP computer (workplace or school just can't let go, huh?), at least load it with a third-party browser, like Chrome. Why? Google has decided to continue supporting Chrome for XP until the end of 2015, so you can keep the machine safe from browser-based attacks a bit longer. And yes, that means you're getting all upcoming features and security patches. Mountain View was originally going to abandon the browser this month but changed its mind -- the company didn't explain why, though it's most likely because the antiquated OS refuses to die despite Microsoft cutting off its updates a year ago. Now, in case you find yourself still using an XP computer by 2016, you can either switch to Firefox (which doesn't have plans to end XP support) or convince the boss/dean that it's high time for an upgrade.

Early adopters have had access to a redesigned Chrome OS launcher since last month. Now, Google is making that feature available to all users of its web-based operating system. Today's fresh, stable update to Chrome OS also comes packed with a number of Material Design elements, bringing a new look to the Files app and the default typeface. Just as well, there's an updated calculator app, support for password-protected zip files -- plus, of course, the customary bug fixes and security revisions. So expect to see changes the next time you boot up your Chrome OS machine, some visible, others not so much. Either way, rest assured they are for the better, especially the Google Now-equipped Chrome Launcher 2.0.

Joost van Dreunen, CEO of research firm SuperData, tells us why the PC gaming market is booming, and how it is leading the way for the games industry
Today, industry and consumers alike fall over themselves to tell us about the booming future of mobile gaming and their predictions for the death of the console.
But there is one segment, that has been going mostly unnoticed: PC gaming. Historically, PC games have played a minor role at retail, representing between five and 10 per cent of sales on average compared to console. Moreover, as an open platform PC gaming is much more susceptible to piracy, forcing large publishers to stay wary of PC gaming and often delaying the release of major titles on the platform. The transition to digital gaming has changed all this.
VALUABLE INDUSTRY
First and foremost, last year the market for digital PC-based games was worth £17.3bn, larger than mobile’s £14.5bn and certainly larger than digital console’s £2bn.
How is this possible? Well, there are four digital game segments that live on PCs: social games, free-to-play MMOs, subscription-based MMOs and downloadable PC titles. For the UK, the PC-based games market was worth £741m, compared to £118m for digital console and £548m for mobile. The biggest growth over the past four years in addressable audience has been in social, which has
gone from 13m monthly active users to 31m last month, and free-to-play MMOs, which grew from 8m to 13m.
Now that digital distribution is starting to become a reality, PC gaming is once again worthwhile for risk-averse publishers. With an effective measure to combat piracy, publishers are able to make content available to a wider, more diverse audience and invest in innovation.
"Last year, the UK PC games
market was worth £741m,
more than the £118m digital
console market." Joost van Dreunen, SuperData
And if there’s one thing that defines subscription-based gamers, it is loyalty. In a hit-driven industry like interactive entertainment there is nothing more valuable than the ability to control cash flow and have predictable income. So it was no surprise late last year that Activision Blizzard’s stock price shot up when it announced a rebound to 10m monthly subscribers for World of Warcraft.
It’s good for audiences, too. To benefit the most from network effects and offer an optimal experience, successful MOBAs like League of Legends require relatively low hardware standards allowing everyone to join in.
In addition, the inventory is enormous. With over 4,500 titles on Steam, Valve is actively exploring ways to overcome the difficulty of connecting audiences with the content of their choosing. And, to be fair, PC games have proven among the most innovative and creative in recent years. Titles like Besiege and Cities: Skylines are hugely popular and reveal an even larger trend that will determine the shape of things to come.

You no longer have to grab a test version of Chrome to try push notifications for yourself. Google has released the finished version of Chrome 42, which lets websites send you alerts (with your permission, of course) whether or not the browser is open. You can get breaking news, for example, or find out when someone outbid you in that antique auction. The feature will be more than a little familiar to Safari users, but this is platform-independent -- you should see it in Linux and Windows, too. There aren't any other conspicuous improvements to Chrome, but Google is promising lots of under-the-hood performance and security improvements that should make your update worthwhile.
