AMD has unveiled its latest line of A-Series desktop processors with the addition of the budget-friendly A8-7670K APU.
During a press call, the firm revealed that the APU has been designed to work alongside Windows 10, and can also provide users with eSports gaming and mainstream workloads.
Priced at $117.99 (£76) the APU is powered by 10 compute cores, including four CPUs running at up to 3.9GHz and six GPUs that can run up to 757MHz.
The APU combines the processing power of AMD’s CPU with the pixel power of AMD Radeon graphics.
Kevin Lensing, senior director of the Client Business Unit at AMD, said: “AMD takes great strides to deliver innovative technology that provides the performance and convenience customers need today and tomorrow.
“The AMD A8-7670K APU is no exception. Our newest APU provides a smooth user experience and is engineered for Windows 10 and eSports online gaming.”
AMD’s new APU can also provide smooth video playback of movies and TV, as well as boost performance of the Microsoft Edge browser, with full graphics acceleration for HTML5 and WebGL.
Users can also play games in 1080p with AMD’s integrated Radeon R7 graphics, plus, it also comes with support for DirectX 12, Vulkan and Mantle.
Zack Shutt, VP of PC vendor Xidax, added: “The new addition of the AMD A8-7670K APU allows us to deliver more options for discerning mainstream PC buyers.
“AMD’s latest driver and feature support allow incredible new entry points for impressive gaming technologies such as FreeSync and Virtual Super Resolution.”
This news comes after AMD revealed its sixth generation A-Series processor for notebooks. Check out our interview with AMD's UK consumer country manager about the notebook APU here.

With Windows 10's launch little more than a week away, Microsoft kicked off its marketing storm last night with the first commercial for the new OS. It's a bit more direct and human than the company's infamous Jerry Seinfeld/Bill Gates ads, with a focus on children and how they're growing up with touchscreens and a wealth of new tech. As with any major product launch, Microsoft is planning a huge multi-million dollar media blitz for Windows 10. The big theme this time around is "people who make a difference," reports ZDNet. The software giant will likely have a much easier time pushing Windows 10 on consumers since it steps back from some of Windows 8 more dramatic (and controversial) interface changes. And of course, making Windows 10 a free upgrade for Win 7 and 8.1 users will also be a big help. The new OS will land on July 29 for Windows Insiders and will roll out to others afterwards.

If you use Windows -- just about any recent version of it, in fact -- you're going to want to check for updates as soon as you can. Microsoft has released an emergency, off-schedule patch for a security hole that lets ne'er-do-wells hijack your system if you open documents or websites that use embedded OpenTypefonts. The flaw exists in virtually every edition of Windows that Microsoft still supports, ranging from Vista all the way to your preview copy of Windows 10. There's no evidence that an attack exists in the wild, but you'll definitely want to get the fix before malware writers get their act together.

AmiMoJo sends a report stating that Windows 10 Home users don't seem to have any way to disable automatic updates to the operating system. Throughout the testing of the Technical Preview, users noted that this option wasn't available, but it wasn't clear whether that was intended for the full release. Now that the suspected RTM build has been distributed, only two options are available regarding update installation: update then reboot automatically, or update then reboot manually. A quote from the EULA seems to support this: "The Software periodically checks for system and app updates, and downloads and installs them for you. ... By accepting this agreement, you agree to receive these types of automatic updates without any additional notice."
The article notes, "This has immediately raised concerns. Today, if a Windows user finds that an update breaks something that they need, they can generally refuse that update for an extended period. ... For Windows 10 Home users, this isn't going to be an option. If a future update breaks something essential, the user is going to be out of luck." Windows 10 Pro users will be able to delay updates for some period of time, and Enterprise users will have update functionality similar to that of Windows 8.

Shenmue 3 may not be released at retail, Ys Net has said.
Paying $60 for a physical copy of Shenmue 3 on Kickstarter seems to still guarantee a physical copy of the game, but whether it will be available upon actual release remains uncertain.
That’s according to VG247, which has been told by developer Ys Net that: “Whether Shenmue 3 will be available for retail or not is currently unconfirmed”, adding that this doesn't apply to crowdfunded pledges.
That’s despite an update to the game’s Kickstarter page on July 3rd entitled ‘PlayStation 4 Physical Reward Confirmed’. Physical copies of the game on either PS4 or PC also feature in the Kickstarter’s $60 pledge tier.
The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter is now on the home straight. Currently it sits at $5,141,575 with 38 hours remaining. Its stretch goals go all the way up to $11m, although the more immediate target is beating the $5,545,991 raised by Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night to become the most funded video game Kickstarter of all time.
If it hits in excess of $8,782,571 it will be Kickstarter’s all-time games record, currently held by card game Exploding Kittens.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says the company is committed to bringing Windows to as many computer form factors as possible — even if they have to do it themselves. He says their plan is to build out new devices with the same mindset that created the Surface line. The Surface Pro tablets (and the regular Surface tablets, now that Windows RT has been retired) have been a rare bright spot among Microsoft's mobile stumbles. Nadella seems to want Windows to become almost hardware agnostic, and he thinks the universal apps plan for Windows 10 is the way to do it.
He says, "Universal Windows apps are going to be written because you want to have those apps used on the desktop. The reason why anybody would want to write universal apps is not because of our three percent share in phones. It's because a billion consumers are going to have a Start Menu, which is going to have your app. You start the journey there and take them to multiple places. Their app can go to the phone. They can go to HoloLens. They can go to Xbox. ... And by the way, when we hook them on that, we have a phone app. This strategy is path dependent, which is a term I use that means where you start is not where you end up. And therein lies a lot of the nuance. The fundamental truth for developers is they will build if there are users. And in our case the truth is we have users on desktop."

Microsoft and Facebook have always been strange bedfellows, but Windows 10 will fully embrace the social app. Redmond's new SDK tool will help developers create universal apps with Facebook integration for Windows Phone 8.1, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 -- including authorization, likes, dialogs, the Graph and other functionality. As a user, that means you're more likely to see Facebook features turn up in Windows 10 apps as soon as they're released, whether using a tablet, phone or PC.

If you haven't already downloaded Windows 10 build 10162 or 10166, you're now too late. Microsoft has suspended the availability of these two builds — previously available on the Slow and Fast rings respectively — in the run up to the big launch day in a couple of weeks' time. As we edge closer and closer to the RTM build of Windows 10, Microsoft is now asking Windows Insiders to stick with the build they currently have installed for the time being. Anyone who hasn't upgraded to these latest preview builds is out of luck. As well as disabling upgrading through Windows Update, Microsoft is also suspending ISOs and activation.

We're investing $10 million in organizations that are upgrading the world," Microsoft announced on in its new Upgrade Your World website, which was created in conjunction with the Windows 10 launch. "We've identified nine global nonprofits, and we'd like your help choosing the 10th." The missions of the selected nonprofits include fighting global poverty, preventing children living with HIV from needlessly dying, increasing access to quality education for children in the developing world, conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends, and ensuring that all kindergartners learn 'computer science.' To paraphrase Sesame Street, can you guess which cause is not like the others? If you guessed Code.org, which wants CS made a "core" K-12 subject in U.S. schools, you're right! Coincidentally, Code.org's biggest donorsinclude Microsoft ($3M+), Ballmer Family Giving ($3M+), and Bill Gates ($1M+). And Code.org CEO Hadi Partovi, who once reported to Satya Nadella, is coincidentally a sometimes jogging partner of Steve Ballmer, as well as the next-door neighbor of Microsoft General Counsel and Code.org Board member Brad Smith, whose FWD.us bio notes is responsible for Microsoft's philanthropic work. Code.org emerged on the scene shortly after Smith suggested that action on Microsoft's 'two-pronged' National Talent Strategy to increase K-12 CS education and the number of H-1B visas could be galvanized by 'producing a crisis'.

With Windows 10's July 29 launch just a few weeks away, Microsoft is offering up more details on how it'll celebrate the birth of its new baby. And one thing is clear: This is a far bigger deal than when Windows 8 hit the streets. Along with the usual festivities and a new marketing campaign, Microsoft is also promoting the idea of "upgrading the world" by offering consumers a bit of help with moving towards Windows 10, as well as celebrating inspirational non-profits all over the world. Microsoft stores, as well as retailers like Best Buy, Walmart and Staples, will offer in-store upgrade help and "experience stations" to let you try out Windows 10. The educational push makes sense, since Microsoft is making Windows 10 available for free to existing Windows 7 and 8 users for its first year. This time around getting people to upgrade means a lot more to Microsoft than making them pay retail price for a new OS.

July 12th, 2015, 15:15 Posted By: wraggster
Back in 2012, the CEO of PC gaming developer Valve declared the launch of Windows 8 “a catastrophe”.
Gabe Newell, the man behind the hugely popular PC gaming download platform Steam, wasn’t happy with Microsoft’s OS. He began toying with the idea of launching what the media dubbed at the time a ‘Steam Box’ – a device similar to a games console with a more open operating system designed for living room playing.
Last year Valve announced the initial line-up of computer vendors and system builders with their own Steam Machines, generating excitement in the market.
But these were delayed, and Steam Machines have only recently been given the official release date of November 10th 2015 (with customers who pre-order early able to get theirs on October 16th).
However, by that time we’ll already be familiar with Windows 10, complete with impressive graphics API DirectX 12.
And PC gaming is much bigger now than it was three years ago, with more affordable desktops and more efficient GPUs – so will there still be a strong demand for Steam Machines?
Retailer GAME is certainly confident. It will be exclusively selling the Steam controller and Link streaming device in the UK, with both priced at £39.99. So will GAME stock the systems themselves? They refused to talk to PCR about this at this stage.
Regardless, there are others in the PC gaming channel are excited by the potential of their own Steam Machine-like systems.
Steam Machines: What kind of a sales opportunity is there for retailers? DinoPC is working on a custom case for a Steam Machine; Utopia Computers has its own take on it – the Hero 4K system; plus Ebuyer is working with Cyberpower to promote a range of specialist gaming desktops, including the Syber range.
DinoPC marketing manager Nic Carnelutti tells PCR: “When I think of a Steam OS I see a Linux-based OS
that can be installed right now on most of the computers currently on the market, consequently I feel
it’s safe to say that pretty much every small form factor PC could be considered a steam machine.
“In the last few months we noticed an increase in sales of mini ITX based systems, people are looking for powerful and compact computers with a stylish looking that can take pride of place in their living rooms.”
YoYoTech MD CK adds: “Steam can offer the power of desktop PC gaming – the challenge will be to see if gamers really want to be playing in their living rooms with others.
“Also, if TV manufacturers will begin to integrate more and more powerful PCs into the screens themselves possibly with GRID gaming capability.”
Full list of official Steam Machines
Here are the 14 official partners which will be releasing their own systems approved by Valve. The individual products are all named ‘Steam Machine’ unless stated otherwise:
- Alienware
- Alternate
- ASUS ROG GR8S
- Digital Storm Eclipse
- Falcon Northwest Tiki
- Gigabyte BRIX Pro
- Maingear DRIFT
- Materiel.net
- NextBox
- Origin OMEGA
- Scan 3XS ST
- Syber
- Webhallen S15-01
- Zotac SN970
What do you think? Will you be stocking a Steam Machine - will it be a hit?

Microsoft has revealed the launch date for Windows 10, and with new form factors designed for the OS coming to market, Jade Burke speaks to industry members for their thoughts…
Microsoft has announced the release date of Windows 10 – and the channel is preparing for its launch on July 29th.
Although some retailers have previously showed scepticism over the new operating system (OS), believing that the free upgrade may be quite challenging to make a profit from, some retailers and vendors are already excited by the upcoming launch.
Nick Parker, corporate VP OEM division at Microsoft, said during the keynote: “Our device partners continue to push the envelope of innovation, developing stunning PCs that are sure to delight customers.
“And our commitment to broaden the ecosystem opportunity with Windows 10 is revolutionising how people interact with their devices and create new opportunities for revenue growth.”
Although the free upgrade has caused some concern within the industry, Sebastian James, CEO of Dixons Carphone, believes servicing will be a great opportunity for retailers to get involved with, as more customers will return to get their PC upgraded in the future.
James adds: “Generally speaking with Windows releases we think this is going to be a winner.
“We will be helping customers to do the upgrade, and I think for many customers the notion of doing an upgrade can be quite daunting, so we will then be able to show them how to use their new product. So for us, we think there are opportunities in servicing.”
Microsoft has also unveiled a line-up of new devices during a keynote at Computex 2015, which have been designed for Windows 10. Some of which include a Transformer Book from Asus, an HP tablet and the Dell XPS 15 laptop.
There are new form factors designed specifically for the operating system. One of the more unusual devices was a Compute Plug from Quanta, a mini PC inside a power adapter instead of a stick.
The plug can be plugged into an HDMI port, which then turns TV into a smart computer, allowing users to control their device using Cortana via a Bluetooth remote or headset.
Alex Ebeid, UK consumer director at Lenovo, believes that Windows 10 will bring positive long-term gains thanks to its similarities to Windows 7.
He says: “On the Windows 10 free update, for me it just means that we’re going to see customers having the best experience on a PC.
“So that’s got to be a long-term gain for everyone – they will get more out of PCs and at some point when they look to a new machine, they stay on the Windows platform and won’t migrate to others.”
As some customers found Windows 8 quite tricky to get their heads around, the simple layout of Windows 10 and the return of the Start menu are both welcome features, plus with the integration of Cortana, users will be able to get a user friendly experience.
Ben Miles, sales director from system builder Chillblast, tells PCR: “Microsoft is back on form. Windows 8 had a mixed reception, but Windows 10 has been overwhelming positively received.
“It’s like an OS that takes the best bits of 7 and 8; it’s pleasant to use and lightning fast. The number of draw calls you can do on DirectX 12 is also massively improved from DirectX 11.”
Similarly, Gavin Rose, joint UK MD for Wortmann AG’s Terra brand, thinks that the uptake to Windows 10 will be much quicker than previous versions. “I think people are becoming a bit more proactive with technology and work with technology more. Now we have smartphones and tablets the interconnection means people aren’t just sticking to the old PC on the desk. They want to swap data across various devices.
“So the uptake on Windows 10 should be quicker and it’s an uplifting technology – each version has easier, better and nicer features.”

It’s been said time and time again that the desktop is dying. Some say the demise is inevitable; others believe the PC market is simply changing with other form factors like tablets, smartphones and all-in-ones picking up the slack in recent years.
While there are elements of truth in both of those views, for me there’s life in the old dog yet. I still think the desktop will make another revival.
The reason for my optimism is threefold – first, the UK’s performance system builders out there aren’t exactly feeling the heat. Sure, online competition is rife between them, but PC gaming specialists like Chillblast are still selling plenty of custom rigs, as are distributors like Target Components, despite analysts like IDC and GfK reporting an overall year-on-year drop in desktop sales.
Secondly, the breadth of innovation coming out of Computex this year has been staggering. From fresh form factors like the PC in a plug to ASUS/In Win’s dazzlingly cool hydraulic transforming tower, Intel Skylake and curved G-Sync monitors to mention a few, we were spoilt.
And those only scratch the surface – check out our show review and product focus in the PCR July 2015 digital edition for more. Let’s not forget Microsoft and AMD’s big announcements from E3 either.
Thirdly, there’s been plenty of talk recently of the desktop as a home’s central hub. Users are returning to their main PC for the more important tasks, then using a tablet or notebook for secondary actions like checking emails and playing games.
As more smaller devices emerge and home automation increases in prominence (just when will it hit the mainstream? We take a look in our latest issue), users may need a central device to facilitate that.
That’s why for me the desktop isn’t dying – it’s just changing. To get ahead, make sure you read our in-depth analysis piece, our big interview with Lenovo, growing alternative brands like Terra and our desktop selling advice.

Ark: Survival Evolved continues its dominance of Steam's top ten sellers chart, beating out GTA V again during the past week.
The two titles have been cemented in their respective positions on the list for more than a month now, with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt becoming top five staples over the same period as well.
The surprise this week is Terraria's fifth place finish – the spike in sales is apparently due to a major new content update for the popular 2011 release.
Fallout 4 is also back within the top ten, finishing in ninth for the period. Here's the full list:
- Ark: Survival Evolved
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
- Terraria
- The Elder Scrolls: Tamriel Unlimited
- Elite: Dangerous
- Rust
- Fallout 4
- Styx: Master of Shadows

Welcome to the new music experience in Windows 10. As hinted at earlier this morning by Paul Thurrott, the company just announced it's rebranding the Xbox Music experience to "Groove", while also renaming the Xbox Video app to just "Movies & TV." According to a blog post about the changes, the new naming is meant to be "more identifiable to our broad customer base" and will roll out to other devices in the coming months. The timing of the change is odd as Windows and Xbox begin to work more closely together than ever before, but it doesn't appear that the actual features will be much different. Of course, with the launch of Apple Music, rebranding could be just the way to get some attention for an existing service that already offers a lot of the same features.

Linus Torvalds ended the Linux 4.2 kernel merge window today by releasing Linux 4.2-rc1. He quickly wrote, "I thought this release would be one of the biggest ones ever, but it turns out that it will depend on how you count." By most metrics, Linux 4.2 is shaping up to be a very large release. Linux 4.2 is bringing plenty of new features including the new 'AMDGPU' kernel graphics driver, Intel Broxton support, NCQ TRIM improvements, F2FS file-system encryption, new ARM CPU/board support, Renesas R8/300 arch support, and many other additions.
